This is the best time in a long time to be a Sonic fan, and for the first time in over a decade, I’m excited to see where things go in the future. And I’m so glad to say that!

Agree!! After growing up with the classics on my parents' old Genesis, I got back into Sonic as a tween about 10 years ago when Lost World and Boom were the big happenings. Of course after that came Forces and other years of just... nothing. It was a rough time to be a re-budding Sonic fangirl, that's for sure. But I stuck with Sonic and you know what? It was absolutely worth it to LATER be "rewarded" with Mania, the IDW Comics, the Movies, Frontiers, Prime, and even the April Fool's game. I am HYPED to see what's in store for us next.

@@jennisgurung2760 I'm from the year 2023, specifically December 6th. I'm sorry to break the news but this does poorly age.
After the release of the mario movie, Sega came to the conclusion they needed to make sonic even more kid friendly and cute to make them as much money as the mario movie so they scrapped the sonic movies for an illumination movie which will release in 2025.
Sonic Frontiers DLCs got cancelled in May and instead they're making SA3... but the writers from Sonic forces are writing it. They also cut their budget even more to save money but continued to expand their team.
In August, there were countless protests for pay rises for Sonic Team employees. But to no avail, instead Sega fired them all and started a Discord server under the names of popular UA-camrs. They took advantage of the naive youngsters and gave them free robux in exchange for their coding talents.
In October, people realised what they were doing and they got exposed. Sega tried to manipulate the news by saying they were giving opportunities to bright minds of the next generation and claimed to have no knowledge that the UA-camrs weren't properly paying them. Everybody saw through that pathetic attempt and backlash grew.
In November, Sega was bleeding money rapidly. They started to buy fangames with whatever money that had left and sell them for a profit, but without proper time to perfect them for all consoles they were doomed to fail. The voice actors got out while they still could before the backlash would reach them. Even illumination cut ties with Sega and the rebooted sonic movie franchise was cancelled.
In December, Sega shut down. There was a secret investigation which brought even more horrors to light. Stuff which you will have to wait to hear about. To think, all of this could have been avoided... If we didn't watch the mario movie.

I really do hope we get more side games like Murder of Sonic that don't follow the series' typical genre. Like for example, a Sonic Rhythm game that uses songs from the past games would be FIRE.

This is definitely the best time in a while to be a Sonic fan. The future of this franchise has never been more bright than it is right now. Sonic Frontiers Update one was pretty cool for a little update, and I didn't expect them to add a bit more polish and little new things that really didn't need to be in the game, so I'm all for it. Origins Plus is also really cool with the new games and playable Amy. The Murder Of Sonic was really cool and a nice loveletter to the lore of the series for a game released on a garbage holiday like April Fools. I'm looking forward to future projects, and I'm pumped for your Sonic Mania review! :)
The Murder of Sonic felt like an interactive IDW comic and that’s the best thing I can say.

A mediocre, overrated BoTW rip-off full of tedious busywork. A worthless paywall cashgrab of yet ANOTHER Classic compilation. A bland, generic kids cartoon on Netflix. A pointless, forgettable mediocrely written "visual novel" and those pathetic comics.

When Ohtani composed One Way Dream w/ NateWantsToBattle singing it, Sonic Team really meant that this is their one way dream because the only way forward is up when they were at their low.
I wouldn't necessarily be this positive about Sonic. I mean, we were the same about Sonic Colours and Generations and then had Boom and LW come out a few years later. I think SEGA needs to make a few more titles of good quality before we should be positive that Sonic is fully back

@@Retrblu Yeah. I think we've burned enough from this franchise before to realize that one not-terrible game and a decent visual novel isn't enough to make up for 11 year wait for a decent 3D Sonic game.
Doesn't make up for the buggy release of Sonic Colors Ultimate, the rushing of Sonic Origins. Or the entirety of Sonic Boom.
Thing is with both gens and colors you could see the series was still not proud of what it once was before colors, it had safe story, safe enviroments, no other characters aside from sonic and overall sonic became more kid friendly, so no matter what everything after gens was gonna fail
@@Banana807 Hard disagree, while I agree that the franchise was trying to pivot what was considered the failure points of the years before 2010's (Serious stories, weird ideas and extra playable characters. Which I don't blame them for, it works on both a budget and marketing level where you can show people you're going somewhere new that doesn't remind them of what your franchise has been lambasted for while also saving on money since you don't need to dedicate more money on writers, voice actors and the like.)
But I don't think the rest of the 2010's was doomed to failure no matter what, Sonic 4: Episode II was a step up from its predecessor but either didn't have enough of a budget or they put Dimps in charge when they showed in the first episode they weren't up to the task.
Sonic Lost World, had the most missed potential out of any of the games from the 2010's; since it had the potential and chance to be another big good 3D Sonic game in terms of gameplay if it just harnessed and used the parkour in more interesting ways and didn't play it so safe. But it was also forced to be on a console with a mainly mario audience and already was a small playerbase due to the Wii U failing(SEGA made a 3 game deal with Nintendo for the Wii U). I think even if it stuck safe with the presentation and story, it still could have been a banger in the gameplay department.
Sonic Boom and especially Rise of Lyric are the ones where I find that the blame is entirely on SEGA's hands and what doomed it from being a decent game. SEGA didn't tell BigRedButton that they were developing for the Wii U, a console in which their engine CryEngine3 was not designed to run on. If SEGA just told them ahead of time or had promised Nintendo another game later and released Rise of Lyric on other platforms, we could had a decent Jak clone with a Sonic twist because most of RoL development was trying to shove CryEngine3 into the Wii U.
As for Sonic Forces, thats what happens when you have only 3 level designers (Unleashed had 8, if I remember correctly) working within a year of full scale development. The story might have been doomed from the start with Sonic aiming for a more kid-friendly demographic but that didn't mean the gameplay had to follow suit. We could had a game that united parts of the franchise, we could have at least Generations level physics and good Classic level design to please the classic fans, Avatar with Adventure level design to please the adventure fans and Boost levels to rival Unleashed/Generations to please the modern fans. But in the end, it just came out a mediocre mess.
A lot of these had their reasons for being poor products, corporate not telling all the details, a mediocre development team, not enough budget, or not enough time. But by no means, we're they going to fail no matter what.
@@Banana807 well can you blame them after the franchise basically hit rock bottom for the first time during that period? The reason why they did those things is because they were literally being criticised for it by fans and critics so they decided to take that criticism as well the only well received part of the previous main series game at the time unleashed and build on it for the next two games resulting in two of the best received sonic games in a long time during that period and one of those games was literally made to be a celebration of the franchise at the time
The fact that Sega ignored the criticism of Sonic frontiers when the gameplay was revealed and they won't delay the game and proceeded to finish the game, making sure it's polished and clean definitely proves that Sega can easily succeed on their own. I describe Sonic Frontiers as Sonic's best 3D game. Along with Sonic Prime, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The knuckles TV series and that Sonic Steam game definitely shows that The Sonic brand will always be alive and healthy.
I'll only stop making fun of Origins when they remove the toothpaste filter and bring back limited lives. I'll also remain forever loyal to Sonic 3 AIR.
This is a great time to be a Sonic fan, I became a Sonic fan in the middle of the dark age, so this is a great change of pace! Love you Matt keep up the good work!

This is the REAL renaissance era. The movies brought Sonic back to the spotlight and back into our hearts after the mediocre failure of Lost World, the Disaster of Sonic Boom, and the failure of Forces. Frontiers is a great apology for the aforementioned games and now the series has found a formula it is now comfortable with and will be sticking with for the next decade or two. It needs some work, but right now, the Open Zone formula is here and the Boost formula is mostly gone.
Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog getting the highest scores since SA2 is a real statement to Sega that YES, we DO like stories in Sonic.
Sega also seems to now regain something they lost after 2009: confidence. I’m sorry, but none of the games in the 2010s really showed that Sega wanted to make art or even take Sonic into a new evolution for the seventh and eighth Gen consoles, they look as though Sega is too afraid to do anything ambitious because they don’t want another Shadow or 06 situation. Sega, instead of throwing away ideas because they didn’t work, why not see what went wrong and find a solution to the problem instead of relying on (now-dated)tropes to keep the series afloat.
That why the "dark age" is my second favorite age behind adventure age
I'm sorry Sega did not lose confidence after 2009 since they literally decided to build upon the one thing unleashed was praised for at the time and actually decided to take the criticism people had with the stories at the time and tone things down a bit and they ended up making colours and generations which were the most well received games they'd made in a hot minute, things only started getting iffy with lost world and then properly went back downhill with boom but I guess people like you are trying to rewrite history for some reason
While I do agree with most of your statements and I enjoy anything Sonic even though I see why they are failures.
I do need to say this.
When Sonic Colors first came out people were saying that it was an actual renaissance for Sonic back then too.
Then Sonic Generations and Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed came out and things only went higher.
But sadly it was so short lived. :(
Because after that the exclusive Wii U Sonic games like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric came out and the TV show of Sonic Boom came out.
Sadly they were failures especially the Sonic Boom stuff. :(
Then Sonic Mania came out and became a huge success while Sonic Forces failed on the Switch. :(
Yet with the way things are going now with Sonic Frontiers, Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Origins as well as the actual Sonic Movies thankfully teaching Sega along the way to be a better video game company with Sonic.

The Game Gear titles look good and fun, one thing I really hoped to see in Plus other than a playable Amy was also Mighty and Ray and maybe Knuckles Chaotix.
We sincerely need Knuckles Chaotix released; aside from briefly being om GameTap in, I believe 2005-ish, that game has never been rereleased. Mighty and Ray would be cool too!
knuckles chaotix would mostly be good for historical value in my opinion due to how bad it can be but it would still make a logical addition

If I am gonna be honest with TMOSTH I would have to say it's solid AS A VISUAL NOVEL. When I was going into this game I expected bland and outright bad storytelling. I expected the plot twists to be predictable and not fun to figure out. I just didn't expect much from this game. What also didn't help is that the game was free... A free Sonic game? I clearly remember thinking that I wasn't in for a good experience. I think that the more you go into the game the more complex and interesting it gets. 8/10 Solid game go try it. (The artstyle is based aswell so is the characterization)

sonic is one of the biggest franchises tbh, i mean even the fans are pumping out such good fangames like triple trouble 16 bit, fallen star and robo blast 2 and then theres the exciting new updates to sonic frontiers with the last one looking super good and with a bonus game literally for april fools, the murder of sonic the hedgehog and with the sonic 3 movie coming out next year, we gonna have content every few months. i rlly hope sonic team makes some small little games soon

@@joel9104 Yeah the games just don't offer what I look for in Sonic anymore. I'm not a fan of the classics so Origins wasn't for me, and Frontiers doesn't really have much that's for me at all.
I think the full road map will make Sonic Frontiers peak fiction for ya.
Between the Frontiers update, the physical release of Origins getting the full Mania Plus treatment, the outstanding Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog, and the recently announced Lego Sonic theme finally becoming reality after 32 years; there's no better time than now to be a Sonic fan!💙

Sonic was never not cool. Sega just struggled to find their footing after the voice cast overhaul, and endured our nitpicking nature back then after the disastrous 06 launch.
Unleashed held up very well all things considered. And the 3 game exclusivity deal Sega signed with Nintendo was burned through fast between lost world and the Sonic Boom IP.
btw you know the roll jump lock removal mod youre using? i recommend ditching it and installing dropdash++ instead.

To be fair the Murder Mystery does have some platforming that does go kind of hard. Though yeah temper your expectations on it, it's not like main game platforming, but more like Special Stage challenges kind of platforming.
Eh, SEGA's still got a bit to go (keyword: BIT) until I'm convinced they can consistently do good stuff with Sonic again.
It's always 2 steps forward, 1 step back with them. There's always a catch with the good things they do. Like with Sonic Origins with its many editions, then recently with Sonic Origins having these added Game Gear games, but not including the superior Master System versions for games like Sonic 1 and 2 where there's more screen space, as well as not including games like 3D Blast and Chaotix, the latter which has never been rereleased. It's frustrating.

I _loved_ Sonic Origins. It's all the games I loved as a kid with improvements I appreciated and I experienced none of the issues other people described with it. Playing Origins is, in fact, the first time I beat all four classic games 100% without cheats or level select or something.
I like what I see and hear with Frontiers even though I haven't gotten around to playing. *_In fact, I think the people shitting on it now are just a bunch of annoying NPCs._*

Maybe after 2 or 3 years from now we'll enter the daimond era of sonic imagine from 3 to 4 we'll get a main game every year we'll get 2 to 3 spinoff games from sports to racing with cars and riders and racing on foot continue the storybook series atlus do an rpg series for sonic and sonic do crossover with persona and remake of oldgames and new game for another cheracters like maybe a metroidvania series for tails like tails adventure and sonic boom returns and we'll sonic o6 and boom rice of lyrics ultimate version to see how the games was supposed to lock
More crossovers like sonic and crash sonic and jak and dexter and these crossovers could be done with sonic boom series cause when we saw rise of lyric it locked as 3d collectheton game like banjo and kazooie and we could get a crossover series between sonic and phantasy star and a sonic and sega series will expand with genras like sports racing rpgs and a more 2d side series like sonic advance and rush and a party andmonopoly games and wressling games which is sport that mario didn't doit and a massive cinematic universe and a continue for satam propobly this is imposible i know thats what i want but its clearly impossible
