Very nice. Thanks for the tips. My shelter 1/2s came with 5 stakes.

Brilliant! I have 3 or 4 of those ol' shelter halves and always figured there has to be a way to make a nice "primitive" tent out of them. I spent months in them while in the Army way back when and crawling in and out of it was always a pain, esp when they were for 2 soldiers to sleep in. The Wheelen style setup will be great!
    Thanks for the video!

Then I got to the part where it was cut. They make zipper wall things. You basically tape them on, unzip and cut. I'd try that, but tape, sew, unzip and cut

Great mod, I'm just awaiting some zip to arrive as I'll be using this idea but running zips down each side. Perfect for my next canoe trip. Cheers

Excellent Modification......making me rethink my shelter choice. Agree with Chris Dorris about adding a flap and a few more snaps to be able to seal it in really inclement weather.

Nicely done. I use the shelter half only, Then attach a 6X8 tarp for the Whalen style effect.works fine. Love the old mil gear anyway.

for a tent, a possible built in cot
have a length of strong fabric, pre-snapped in place or snapped by hand ( top and bottom) to the inside of the tent a length of a cot.undo the top snaps.now you have a flap.
the flap can be whatever width to provide 4 anchor points to help with the support mechanism
say you pull out the fabric flap toward you.it would be the height of a cot
your thought if you wish, is to create a support for the cot, that's light and functional to support a human being
the unsnapped flap could be used for other purpose such as storage if you use anchor poles at the ends and middle
do with it as you wish

I have two shelter halves; use the second as a liner for winter camping; used Scotch Guard on outer to keep it moisture proof.... works very good , stays warmer...

I've had a couple old halves laying around for years. Believe you just gave me a good use for them.

A heavy duty zipper sown in would probably work as well. seems it would eliminate the ripping issue at the top and also be a quick way to close up in a blowing rain. just a thought.

Not bad, but you can't stand up in it, which is why Col. Whelen designed his according to the original dimensions. Yet this is a very good compromise, and an excellent way to modify the shelter halves for a more sophisticated design.

It would not be too difficult to hem up the cut edges and add a overlapping flap and some snaps so you could close the side down and seal it again in bad weather. Great mod. I have been looking at the us shelter halves for a while but allways thought them kind of limited. I am definitely going to be rethinking that opinion now, thanks.

  • @jamesbowen5573

I guess if you had three of those like you have you could always use your mod as the floor if you wanted to seal things up good for winter weather. So you could go back and forth.
What I would rather do is just unsnap it and support the awning Auntie the two flaps together underneath, so I wouldn't be cutting around on my tent. It's clear to see where tigers got their idea for several of their tents. I guess no one is original these days

The military poncho from the era that the shelter half is from ( has snaps that will snap to the shelter half )will do what you have done with the destroyed half .
We use to ( in the desert by barstow commiefornia ) put a poncho between to halfs to make a large shade area .or use three halfs two set up with one across the middle .
But you don't need to cut one to do what you did..

That's an awesome mod! A bit heavy if you're hiking it, but if it's not that far than you're good to go. Great job!

I agree with ya on that. It would be an awesome base camp setup and would definitely handle the elements alot better than modern tents. Take care.

Why do you cut on the outside of the seam, with the seam on the flap end? I would think that anchoring the side with a seam would be sturdier. Just wondering and thank you very much for the informative video!

    • @blackoracle69
      @blackoracle69  8 років тому +2

+TDBofAmerica (TDBofAmerica) its a toss up..i chose to leave the seam on the center section ( the front awning now) than on the side with the flap..either would work but the edge of the center section would take more stress hanging that way so i chose to leave the seam to have less un raveling..thanks for the comment safe journeys

Use 3 halves. No cutting needed.

  • @brianjones1151

As a side note, if anyone has a shelter half with metal buttons instead of snaps please dont cut it up, as that is a WWII vintage shelter and worth more and also very collectable. Even the 'snap' shelters are starting to become collectable as they were used in The Korean war and Vietnam.
Personally I think it's a shame to cut up anything from history !!
