      These various transmission videos have prompted me to keep an eye on the coloration of my vehicle's fluids, not just the mileage on the odometer.
      I've long know that oil should not be super black (in gasoline engines) but now I also know brake fluid is supposed to be nearly clear, transmission fluid should (typically) red and translucent, and radiator fluid should not be cloudy.
      This will help me know when to get fluid exchanges done BEFORE problems arise, and in the case of radiator fluid, to know when problems are happening. Nobody wants the forbidden milkshake!

      Don't forget about the filter especially if they had never REGULARLY service the transmission. Most of the heartache comes from lack of service until it's too late.

    Not a mechanic but I used to do PC repair and the same applies. The moment you touch it everything wrong with it is now your responsibility even if it had the issue when it came in the door. Always do a comprehensive troubleshoot and document EVERYTHING OR get it in writing that you're only taking responsibility for the specific issue needing repair. And be fully prepared to fire your customer. IMHO.

    20y ago at the Allison Transmission course, they warned against fluid changes on under-maintained high-mileage transmissions. The gunk and debris that had accumulated at the bottom of the pain could disperse in the fresh fluid, potentially making its way into the valve body, where it could partially block a valve, leading to inadequate pressure on a clutch/clutches, resulting in a slipping transmission.

    I did a partial fluid swap and filter on my 08 lucerne. I also changed the trans. pan to one with a drain plug. First time I had ever worked on a transmission. I was so proud. Then I went to clean up and noticed the magnet still sitting in the old pan.

    You are correct. Just for context, I am the person who clued you in about the miss-placed snap ring on the 6L80 from a week ago. Servicing of transmissions is very over rated. They are not open to the atmosphere so do not collect dirt and the filter will not plug.. In my opinion, the oil will last for 1 - 2 hundred thousand miles or more. A proper pressurized transmission does not slip if it is sized properly for the power level and conditions it operates under. Heat is the big enemy. I have had several vehicles over the years that I did not service the trans and they all went a long distance. One 1989 GMC pickup had 425,000 on a 4L60. The only reason I did service on my latest vehicle is it was a condition of the warranty. If there are particles or pieces in the oil, it has been slipping or a hard part is failing. Servicing will not change this.

Im a sparky and I have the same problem, they read something online and they think they know all about being an electrician, I have a 300 page book of wiring regs I have to comply with plus serval large books of various building codes I have to abide by , there is a reason why I spent 5 years training and going to college. Because I right there wrong, plus every year I have to keep up with the changes which cost me an arm a leg . This is all about risk and who wears the consequences if something goes wrong. Those who have commented saying they have flushed high mileage units and not had a problem, that's fine. But ask all the auto trans specialists (in any country) who repair/service this stuff day after day and see what they say. They will say what Ray has said. Also, if something goes wrong, who wears the liability, or in the least, has the stand-up arguments with the customer, when the customer says that it was running fine before you serviced it and now it is not. Ray has to run his shop; not run a back yard, help your friend, neighbour or whoever shop. He has to be insured, wear the liability and confront all the dramas, dramas he does not need. So totally agree with Ray's assessment. Too many miles; too much risk. I would not do a service on such a car even if the customer was willing to sign any disclaimer. I'm not a mechanic, but I suspect the thing is that some transmissions, with certain faults or wear, can be made worse by changing fluids at high miles for the first time. It doesn't mean it will, but it's a possibility. Because the cost of a new trans is high and whoever did the fluids will be blamed, they may not want to take that risk even if it's small.

    I once did a fluid flush on an S10 that had black transmission fluid. My boss warned the customer that the transmission could be on the way out, but he said it had been shifting fine, and to go ahead and flush it, and if the trans failed, the trans failed. I thought sure I'd have to run more than the usual amount of fluid through it to get it to come out clean, because there was zero red left in the old fluid. It looked water with black stuff mixed in. But 12 quarts was all it needed. I changed the oil in that truck for 2 more years before I left that shop, and the trans still worked perfectly.

    My Mustang has well over 200k on it and the transmission started doing this shuddering thing, the car almost felt like it was going over the rumble strips. I wasn't about to have it flushed, but I did pump out all the fluid I could, drop the pan, put in a new filter and fresh fluid along with a tube of anti-shudder additive. The transmission is working just fine, but for the next couple of oil changes I'll pump out a quart of fluid and replace it with fresh.

    If you go in deep enough to take out the clutch plates, change the plates. It's cheaper than the labor to get at them again.
    People are afraid of working on a transmission because "they work on magic."
    Just a series of planetary gears and clutch sets with hydraulic control of which clutches are engaged. Inside the modern electronic controlled valve body is where you can mess up easiest and you can just order the rebuilt valve body.
    I wish automatic transmissions had a drain plug and a spin on filter... That would point out the need for fluid changes, rather than sealing it up and making it appear to be something you don't touch for 150,000 miles. (which is about failure point with no fluid and filter service)

  • @sniperlif3
    @sniperlif3 Рік тому

    Sometimes, the grit in fluid helps a transmission to shift by providing friction. High mileage cars are horrible to work on because a simple fluid change can change the engine or transmission. Even a high mileage oil change going from standard to synthetic oil can cause leaks due to synthetic being thinner/less viscous at the same rating.

    First off, you don't really owe an explanation for the choices that you make as mechanic at your own shop. Second of all, I don't think you're bagging on high mileage transmissions. The bottom line is that a transmission or engine will only live for a certain amount of time depending on quality of build, and upkeep. Some are better than others; but at the end of the day, the cost to repair becomes economically unfeasible. As far as the 400k mile comment, newer vehicles are built flimsier and cheaper every year, and secondly, there are tons of people out there that still believe in no service transmissions for the life of the vehicle. There are also people who just beat the crap out of their cars and expect them to keep going indefinitely.
    Keep doing what you're doing Ray, love the content.

    Actually, it's not really a myth or a rumor but something Scotty Kilmer preaches constantly because he's had that happen more than a few times. He's seen it time and again where they do a full fluid flush and shortly after, if the fluid's never been changed because it's supposedly a lifetime transmission or something, and then it would start slipping shortly after. He does however recommend it as a regular maintenance item where flushing the transmission is a good idea if done at regular service internals. But a high mileage transmission he just recommends a filter drop which is a third or less of the fluid as a whole to see if it helps or not as a first step. If that doesn't help fix the problem, he says then definitely take it to a mechanic because as you said, quite often the bandaid won't fix the problem, but if people want to try that first themselves, sometimes it helps but usually won't.

    • @paulnoble5627
      @paulnoble5627 Рік тому

      Please turn off Scotty. Or ask him a simple question. If engine oil is used up and burnt, is it best to leave it in there as the debris is what is keeping the engine alive? Of course he will say no. Well, trans fluid is oil. Worn out trans oil works exactly the same as worn out engine oil. Which is to say it doesn't work at all. Also, just like the engine, there is a filter that catches all the "helpful" debris and doesn't allow it to get to the clutches anyhow. So that is all a myth that people like scotty continue to perpetuate. The reality is that the myth exists to deny service with a plausible sounding explanation. This is because customers will try to claim a fluid exchange caused their failing transmission to fail. The average customer, if you explain what may or may not happen, will still blame the mechanic after their already failed transmission fails after a fluid exchange. So best to tell them the myth and they will come back after total failure of the transmission when you can charge big money and not have the grief of the customer. No car guy worth anything should believe this myth, nor Scotty.

    Not a mechanic but have worked my my cars in the pass. Changing oil, plugs, wires and the basic other stuff even changed transmission fluid and filter. My question why do they want to flush my transmission instead of just changing to fluid and filter? Sounds like the automobile mechanics want to make more money.

    A few years ago I was sitting in a bar sipping a cold one
    The much younger bar gal was saying that her transmission was slipping and that she needed to put sawdust in it
    Because that's what her dad did
    I was JSMH.

      Back in the '50s and '60s we occasionally saw a manual transmission with sawdust in it. This was a car dealer's trick to quiet a worn-out transmission long enough to get it sold. Worked like a charm until the bearings died. ONCE, we had a car towed in as undriveable because the owner heard about and tried the sawdust trick on his Hydra-matic. (Bar gal's dad?) A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Done it many many times. Changing transmission fluid to fix mechanical problem is like erasing codes to fix the engind problem. 😂

      I’d say , check the condition of the fluid.. get a small sample put a few drops on a white paper towel. If’s it’s not terribly dark and brown.. I’d say just do a filter and clean out the pan and fill it back up.

    Change of fluid every 40000 MI or you never change I super high mileage transmission the best thing is to drain the fluid change your filter filter the old flood and put it back in and always let the customer know this is not to fix this may create more damage change every 40,000 mi order don't change it

      I'm not a mechanic, but I've never seen it.
      I personally bought 2 cars with over 200k miles on the original trans fluid and I flushed both in my driveway (by disconnecting the cooler line) and they were smoother and kept lasting, even as I beat on the cars.
      When I found out my dad never changed the fluid in his fusion at 140k I changed it for him (pan drops to use up 12qts) and it survived until 200k miles when he overheated the engine.
      I would never hesitate to change high mileage trans fluid... If a fluid change "breaks" it, it was already broken.

    One opinion that made sense to me was to just change the fluid on an old trans, rather than flushing it. The theory is that it would not be good to push a lot of dirty fluid through the parts all the sudden. But if you have been doing it every 25 or 30k miles it wouldn't be a problem. Not a pro, and definitely not a transmission mechanic.
