    I had no complaints with the wood beam, I was scratching my head wondering why you didn’t shave about another inch off for a perfect fit so you wouldn’t have to ram it in there . Ray I'm in my mid 50s, those that reeeee about your methods of working - crocs, tennis shoes , chain saw etc... would absolutely loose their minds to see how we did things 30 years and over ago.
    I laugh sometimes when I see men have to put on gloves to change a light bulb or hook up a garden hose etc... Honestly, men have become way too soft.
    I grew up on a farm splitting wood, installing and repairing barbed wire fencing, bailing hay , etc.... very seldom did we have all the " proper safety gear ". We were taught how to handle and work properly and should ya get a scratch or cut methalade ( monkey blood ) was poured over it. Crap burned quite a bit but my grandfather would always say " if it doesn't burn its not healing " 😂

    I laugh at the trolls. Using a forklift is a very smart move although being certified is like a teenager taking a driver's test. It doesn't mean you are an expert. I've driven a forklift for 40 years and I'm good. But you did very well with the way you used it's muscle to move the beams into place. I am a licensed building inspector and don't see anything wrong with the wood column supporting steel beams. As long as they're secured in place its good to go!

    • @clivesheppard8432
      @clivesheppard8432 Рік тому +17

      Actually Rays posts aren't supporting anything other than the new door, he's using the sheeting rail to hold the top of the posts. The loads (such as they are) over the main columns are carried by the perimeter beam at eaves level on top of the columns. It's a steel portal-frame building.

    • @IR-nq4qv
      @IR-nq4qv Рік тому +11

      @@clivesheppard8432 Agreed, plus the fact that Ray is installing a roller door not an overhead door.
      There is no actual supporting load on the side vertical posts, they are only there to anchor the roller track, the main support as you say comes from above

      Iiiiiiiiiiii…… don’t think you got that quite right there, inspector.

    • @clivesheppard8432
      @clivesheppard8432 Рік тому +1

      @@level1804 The timber posts and beam are irrelevant in terms of carrying any load from the existing building at all. I already said it is a steel portal frame building, there fore selfsupporting by design, and the horizontal rails both tie the structure and act as sheeting rails only. All the sheeting rail is doing in Ray's construction is providing horizontal restraint to his wooden bdoor frame - nothing more. As for wind loads you failed to mention, those were taken for in the original design so the new door imposes no additional wind load so the only additional loads imposed on the sheeting rail are wind loads imposed as kminimal point bloads on the rail at the top. on one section only - a mere bagatelle. It looks like the sheetring rail is pretty substantial, possibly a 180 x 75 x 20.9kg/m PFC judging by Ray's videos.

The only piece of advice I can pass along from my departed father is. Take your time and do it to the best of your ability because it will take three times as long to correct it. Interestingly, the few people I know who do or have worked in heavy construction are strongly against steel toed boots, preferring a polymer hard toe cover.
      Their reasoning is that a steel toe cap, under enough pressure, can deform and stay deformed, possibly leading to amputation.
      A hard polymer toe cap will spring back or flat out break. Either way, your foot is not caught in a steel trap.

      I know, it is a fringe case for most construction jobs, but two of the people I know work/worked for a company that places prefab housing units on readied foundations.

    The hybrid wood/steel construction is interesting. Since you are modifying a steel building it might have been more cost effective to use steel profiles to frame up the new door opening. The purlins that were removed can be reused to support side metal. I'm guessing that you have more experience with wooden beam and column building but the main thing is that you're getting it done and congratulations are in order.

    Ray, I don't care what anyone else says. You and your friend accomplished what would have cost you a lot of money. You know what you are doing and so do your friends. I'm sure you both discussed the way you wanted to tackle it. I was watching and talking to the TV in regards to moving the forklift over a bit more, taking the pole off the truck as the balance was wrong. Same when you were going to raise it in the upright position. Good on you for doing the work. At least you can't blame anyone but yourself. If something does go a miss, but doubt that will happen. Will be good to see it all completed, hopefully by July.
    Trucks looking really good. I don't like red either and I'm a redhead, well Auburn gone white at 69. If I was in your position I would do what I could myself too. I started off as an apprentice mechanic 52 yrs ago, after 2 yrs I got out if my endentured apprenticeship didn't like the idea of being covered in grease and oil upnto my armpits. We didn't have lifts, removing transmissions and gearboxes where onto our chests then rolling out from under the car. When I was 23 I studied and became a Registered Nurse, so covered in piss and shit, who knew. It was the only real job I had that I really enjoyed every day. The highs and lows of good outcomes and bad. Unfortunately I injured my back stopping an elderly lady hitting the floor back in 1983 and jave suffered with it since then.
    I enjoy your videos tremendously especially the digs at brake cleaner, Not Sponsored.
    One thing though. When you remove the sump and ransmission trays, you use expensive brake cleaner on the inside, but hardly ever clean the outside. That was a job I had to do in a tub of Kerosene with no gloves on at all, not that it would have mattered. There are so many new tools but still have tonsl9g getting up in to those tight areas above the bell housing and around the engine. In my time we sandblasted spark plugs, regapped them, tested and reused them if ok. No such thing as Iridium plugs then, though I had those in my Toyota Tarago I had for 22 yrs. Great vehicle that.
    Take care, don't over do it, look after the wife unit and children. Hope you don't over extend yourself financially. It's good you now have someone else in the shop with you. Hope you train him well. Wish there were more people like you around, thinking about the end costs to customers and not just charging like hell.
    A fan Downunder in Sydney Ausralia.

      Very true. Correcting other's 'errors' was always satisfying for me. Thing is, they didn't realize it was an error. Sliding glass patio doors installed perfectly plumb BUT the base they were on wasn't level. Make it square; more important than plumb. 1/4" out of plumb isn't noticeable but a quarter inch to nothing gap when closed is.

    Hey Ray, having watched your channel for as long as I have, I know you like to do things right. That said, it was evident from the video that you guys were trying to be careful. Maybe the critical comments were based on viewers being concerned for your safety and hopefully not haters. I love the paint color on the truck. I remember you had said way back when that you wanted to paint it the same color as the Dirtymax. (I pay attention) Are you planning to put your logo on both trucks? You probably don't need the advertising as you seem to be busy enough with word of mouth and your channel. All the best. Cheers!

Cleaning battery terminals, the area you just worked in, etc. Saving the customer money by not looking how to make the most expensive repair. The recent Tahoe spark plug change you did instead of charging the customer for a transmission because the misfiring was causing the shifting issues is impressive. Don't change a thing.
