This can be a powerful advantage Ray can have over other mechanics. If there is ANYTHING that he is working on where an extra thousand pairs of experienced eyes could prevent an error or make a job easier. Then why not take advantage of this free crown sourced resource! Unfortunately most wrenching videos are from days or weeks ago and thus hindsight. I see this as an untapped goldmine of technical information. Try it sometime Ray! Part one: Diagnostic: here is the problem. Post video, crowd source answers. Ray takes them in and then films the fix for part two. What a fantastic way to engage us viewers.
High five to the commenter who saw the issue on the rebuild. Outstanding catch Sir! Nice to see a humble, honest mechanic Ray, you could have taken the credit, but you gave Kudos to the commenter who told you that`s wrong. This is why so many of us viewers respect you. Honest mechanics with moral values are a rare find today, most will gaslight the customer. YOU Sir, do not. Mad respect from this 65 yr old shadetree mechanic. Stay safe Ray, Wife Unit and kid units, God Bless.
I am unclear if the plastic spacer/washer was put back into place when assembling the 4 5 6 drum. It’s the one with the planetary and small sun gear. The spacer fits on top of planet and held in place by 2small holes in planet (2 small nubs on spacer)
Hope this wasn’t “don’t ask me how I know” advice. But sometimes that’s the best advice there is. (I did not scratch around to find the comment - so it’s short at least one like.
Ray, I find it refreshing that you respond to commenters when you are told about an issue. I once notified you of a change of availability in a tool you were promoting but was not currently available. I'm not looking for a pen pal, but I did find it refreshing that you changed your list. Great respect from this 69 year old DIY everything mechanic.
No one can know everything. Teamwork….a commentor sees an issue and helps out. Awesome! Customer wins, you win and your audience wins. Doesn’t get better than that.
Yes. It seems with trannies, (not the human kind) there’s a thousand things to keep in mind while reassembling. The shop manuals, diagrams, and a UA-cam video on a tablet, and tons of experience, and good character with nerves of steel-are needed to be successful here. Also tons of time.
Going to join the chorus here, but it takes a 'big man' to be willing to learn from criticism and to take the positivity from it. Too many people have no idea how to do that, and see it as a personal affront. Rock on, Ray. There's a reason I find you so admirable and your videos a pleasure to watch. Kudos, too, to the commentor who offered constructive advice and offered his feedback. Makes me pretty damn happy when everything works out :)
Good on both of you. Watching out and being able to admit a mistake. Ray could have seen that comment fixed it and not make it a video on it but that's just not Ray!
Thanks right back. When you model exemplary character, you signal to others on how it can all go and that it is OK to be human. That kind of thing spreads, and we are all better off over time. Stay cool Ray. You are appreciated.
Amazing to catch that error from watching a video. We all learn from mistakes. Hopefully other people's mistakes. We don't have time or resources to make them all individually.
Actually I could say yes I was amazing but that wouldn't be true!🤣🤣 I was expecting it. As soon as I seen him taking the snap ring off, I waited for him to show a decent shot of it replaced and he did at 55:21. The reason I say that is that anyone not familiar with these boxes would more likely than not miss the fact that the drum has one "specialty" lug that does not have a snap ring slot. The ends of the snap ring must span this or the result is a incorrect seated snap ring.
I love the fact that there are other professionals watching your videos. And that one caught the snap ring misalignment and wrote to you about it. What a great thing to do, helping each other like that. I am encouraged that good people are still out there!
Smart is the man who listens to his friends when in doubt or trouble. Waiting to see how it works out, Ray the first time I rebuilt a trans my heart was in my mouth when I heard a strange noise when starting the vehicle! One of my practical joking co workers put a noise maker in the tail pipe.
Hey Ray, I’ve seen some very informative videos from Richard and Teresa educational transmission videos, they do a lot of overhauls on American truck transmissions. The Chanel was called Precision Transmissions from Amarillo in Texas and recently re located to new premises. Richard Is a walking encyclopaedia of knowledge when it comes to transmissions, check it out before you do the next transmission job. Keep the videos coming mate, it’s great to see the progress you have made with the workshop. Watching from Perth Western Australia. 😁👍🇦🇺
Thanks to the viewer who caught the transmission oops! Glad to see the 3rd door almost done, too! Hey Ray, what all has been going on with the Monte Carlo SS? It's been on and off the lift a few times since you hired Troy and I'm curious what all you guys have done. I think I remember it having a whole list of stuff it needed, more than the stuff you did on video.
Ray, we your subscribers have your back. One person can't know everything. You humbly admitted that your not a transmission nam. However, your not afraid to learn. Big shout out to the subscriber who took the time to let you know what was wrong. Stay safe. ❤
This is why I can’t get enough of Rainman Ray and Wifeunit. When things go well, we see that, but when they go wrong, there’s no cover up. Far from it. The error gets highlighted and credit is routinely given to anyone that helps out. That helps the rest of us avoid making the same mistake, shows us that he’s human, but a good one, and provides positive feedback to anyone inclined to be helpful, making it more likely they’ll do it again, given the opportunity. Even knowing all that, I’m not sure I’m brave enough to do the same, if I was in his shoes. Huge respect, both to Ray and to the observant commenter. Keeping quiet would have provided a way to put people off doing transmission surgery themselves and helped keep the transmission specialists on their pedestal, when the expensive failure occurred. Ray, being Ray, would have told us about it and the comments would have been all about how mechanics shouldn’t interfere with things they don’t understand and how trannys should be left to the specialists. All that negativity avoided and it feels GOOD
Absolute kudos to the person who saw the error and pointed that out to Ray. You Sir are a hero not only to this community but also to the customer. Damn nice we can help each other when dealing with uncharted waters 👊
we all get by with a little help from our friends......Great that someone helped Ray, who helps everyone, as much as he can......Bravo to the sharp helper who sent the message to Go Back, and fix it perfectly!!!!
Nice work Giving a shout out and Admitting of a mistake Makes you a better tech brother Learning from mistakes always helps us be stronger 💪 keep up the great work @Rainman Ray's Repairs
High five and a big shout out to the commentator that took the time to share their knowledge with you Ray, and all of us! It would have been a catastrophic result otherwise. Big shout out to you Ray for posting this video. Making a mistake is one thing, it's what you do about it that really counts. Part of what you did is report back to us, along with the rectification. Thanks for sharing!!
You got a team in your shop and a team online rooting for you Ray. So glad you gave credit to the eagle-eyed commentator who spotted a re-assembly issue in time for you to rectify it easily. No humble pie eating necessary... respect has just notched up a bit higher too.
That is awesome someone seen that in your previous video. Hopefully nothing else is affected from the bad torque converter. Your videos are awesome Ray. All the best to you and the Wife Unit!
If I bring my wife's jeep down from South GA will you fix it? The dealer has had it for months. They have replaced the heads, timing chains, water pump, radiator, and a bunch of other stuff and I still haven't gotten it back. I will never ever buy another Jeep. They are money pits.
Good job on the Viewer that caught the mistake, and i will join in with some others in saying that why you have a great following. Your just a good guy. One thing i learned after turning wrenches for over 35 years is there is always something to learn.
Glad that feller stepped up to correct the situation ! Because my left brain was telling my right brain that this transmission will never work again. Disaster avoided !
Cool. For a while I used to watch transmission tear downs and diagnosis on one channel. The shop owner had a mortuary style table that he did his tear downs on complete with a fluid drain built in.
@tradde11 yeah I can see that. I did have working knowledge of what Ray was doing but it's been a while also I was seeing if he put the o rings back right
@tradde11 they started this channel a few months ago. The old name is their son’s who apparently left with a lot of bad blood. The old channel was Precision Transmission
I know I am a field with the current discusion but I have a question. What is your opinion/experience with 6.5 duramax engines? Are they any good? Longevity? Mpg? Performance modifications? I am considering a few motorhomes that have the 6.5 duramax engine. Thanks Ron
Give him the warm POTB. Good job, Pat, Good job, Pat, Good job, Pat. U saved more than that. It would've been a unhappy owner, another in and out with trans, rays $$ to do that and parts to repair, and then wasted time. Idk what vehicle that goes in but I just had a 2015 Ram 6.4 Auto trans go out. I found 1 used for $3800.00 with 288k miles. No new at all anywhere even Chrysler. Only option is rebuild by a company that builds pulling truck type gear box. So it's tweaked and tough as nails but cost almost 8 grand when all said and done. My 07 town car with less than 100k miles cost less than that. I could've bought it 2 times for what a auto trans rebuild and in and out job cost. Idk about this trans but if it's anything like that it would've been a HUGE mistake. We know alot about alot but nobody knows it all. Always better to ask a pro, research, etc when any doubt is there. No shame in admitting Hey Idk about this cause the commenter did. We need more of this helping 1 another out and less negative BS. Good on u both. I like to see this cause it gives me hope that not all ppl are Aholes.
In an attempt to resolve a Small Evap leak P0442 on my 2008 Forester, I changed out the Purge Valve - why not, right? The gas cap is a new OEM and the filler neck is clean. Is there some sort of re-learn required? If so, how could I do it. Also, I shut the Check Engine / Cruise Control lights by disconnecting the battery terminals. Is this adequate or does it need to be cleared with a scan tool? Thanks much.
This video reminded me that I also wanted to make a clarification at some point, but I forgot. It's about disconnecting the terminals at the car's battery whenever we weld the car's body and any part connected to the car. I think you do the disconnection from the battery, but in several instances I did not hear you specify this precaution. I like your videos, they are dynamic, engaging and very educational. It is a great thing to share your experience with everyone. Bravo
I don't recall seeing any disconnect of the battery in any video when welding, but I could have missed that, just not seeing all the episodes. Ray has a good group following him because he is an alright guy.
Ray working on transmissions is like looking into the nether word. To be an expert is a whole different breed of mechanics. I was a mechanic for 20 yrs at the time I started working stern drives (inboard outboards) man it was intimidating but like anything else (transmissions) once you know the mechanic of it-- well it's just another trannie. I am shocked at how the BRAVO man saw the ring was incorrect-- now that's 20/20. I looked at the video twice and still couldn't tell. He knows his stuff.
Here I am in Bradenton, all the way from Western Pennsylvania on vacation. We had an issue with our van, and I immediately thought of trying to reach out to you and see if you would take a look at it (fat chance, I know). It ended up being a simple coil replacement, so no biggie, but I would've loved to meet you! Keep up the great work!
Yah know I would like a shirt with my name embroidered on it. That would be pretty cool. My fathers name was Ray as well my gramps. Not saying I want Ray for the name tag , but it might be something you should look into. My dad wore a suit and my gramps wore the blues and a white v neck. Food for thought fella. Just saying 🧐
Trans still must be completely cleaned of all debris for long term reliability. Tis why all good trans shops have pristine 'Clean Assembly Room' avoiding needless Come Backs
Fingers crossed on the trans reassembly and having it work correctly..... All the valve body seals (trans to valve body) should have been replaced, along with all the shaft seals. Bet she doesnt last long.....
Well Raymond, now you have the the pipes off, you should inspect and replace the muffler berrings. Very important parts. Ask your customer if he'd like to save some and do it now wile you can get to them, labor and parts free on this one but some people do not want you messing with blinker fulids or muffler berrings without approval first.
Good on ya for looking through comments for that one key piece of info that saves the day and good on the guy who left said comment!!! overall great interactions leading to progress.
If you ever have a problem that you can't figure out, put it in a video. The next day you will find the solution in the comments. No question about it. The level of expertise here in the comments is really quite impressive.
That's odd. I was under the impression that these videos are uploaded at least a few days after recording. I stopped commenting my opinions and suggestions when I realized an entire fleet of ships had sailed, long before the video appeared on the channel. There's an inside track?
I love doing this sorta stuff. But id be scared to do that type of inspection on a customers car especially if im not a transmission guy. Because this video and the previous one is clear ammo for the customer. Regardless if you put that thing back together to spec if that thing fails or grenades in the near future they could make you buy them a new trans, because a non trans tech opened a transmission without clear reason and then later on its broke. Its like having a guy tear down my engine after a missfire and finding out the engine tear down wasnt nessecary BUT later on due to old age etc the engine fails BUT since some rando opened the engine you could easily say hey its their fault its broke. I dont want to be owning multi thousand dollar parts so i would NOT do this again if i were you lol
We all make mistakes, especially on things we are unfamiliar with, repeat the process again and you will become a master in the subject of not making that same mistake again.
Went too FAR! Invasive Inspection, 6l80 Transmission. 2016 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 ua-cam.com/video/Z-kGPJH5ZfA/v-deo.html
You're doing Great Ray, Love watching your longer videos, very entertaining and Educational, keep up the excellent work....
Love the long videos!
There was a comment that said “Send that guy a shirt” that got quite a few likes! Not a bad idea!
"One never knows how far one can go until one goes too far."

Send him a shirt lol
And a hat
Yeah, that definitely calls for a merch care package.
He deserves something
A shirt? He better buy that guy a friggin’ steak. And shake his hand.
I agree he should be sent a Rainman care package for the save of the day

Well the real key here is that Ray actually reads these comments otherwise he would have been screwed.
What about the fact he skipped the first 3 parts of the guys comment.
He is still screwed. Converter trashes pump. It still needs a pump and bellhousing.
@@eddiereichel9354 Yeap, every one of them needs a pump/bellhousing. Select fit too, but I usually use the thinnest set.

it's great when good people are watching your back 👍👍👍👍👍
Way cool that he provided needed detail and that he saw that over a video.

You’re a good man Ray. Admitting the mistake and giving credit where credit is due. Traits we should all strive to exude.
Reeeeee! Helpful? Sweet! Thanks!

i met ray the other day on vacation he is like 6 foot 4 and he is as nice in person as he is here as is the wife unit
Well, in this case it is most definitively not "end of transmission" lol 😂
Okay, take my "like". 😣
Yay...First Like today!!!
You beat Cliff and Aleks, hard to do!!!
@@RainmanRaysRepairs I was watching another video and got the first like there too.
Nice of Ray to recognize the commenter that saved the day, not everyone would have admitted that they made a mistake. Ray is a class act.
Now I have to go back and look for that comment, all I was wondering about was that O-ring........
Who could of thought uploading these videos could of saved you money
"End of transmission"
Just hopefully not because it broke!

Ask your customer if he'd like to save some and do it now wile you can get to them, labor and parts free on this one but some people do not want you messing with blinker fulids or muffler berrings without approval first.
skutahuniai4830 is a transmission technician.
Bypass the thermostatic valve. A cooler running transmission doesn't hurt anything unless you live in Alaska or Siberia.
Ray only a real man admits to his mistakes, excellent video and glad to be a subscriber here! We all learned from this.
Good on ya for looking through comments for that one key piece of info that saves the day and good on the guy who left said comment!!! overall great interactions leading to progress.
That guy's advice might have been good, but why so patronising?
Yes I never touch an Automatic trans. Glad that person helped out. Cheers from Aus
Send that hero some merch!
Why didn't you show what snap ring was miss aligned when you fixed your mistake?
More research/preparation=fewer mistakes with customer's vehicle.
Funny you took 1 sentence out of a whole paragraph the dude wrote. Punp is shot from converter trash Can't wait for the failure video
Bypass the thermostat in the trans. TransGo makes a bypass for that well worth it, keeps trans temp about 20 plus deg. cooler
Yea! To crowdsourcing problem solving.
Just when was feeling confident about tearing into a transmission Ray almost grenades one. 😢 I'm terrified once again. 😂
Who was the commenter? That person's getting a 6 pack of Stella Artois from me!
All part of the "customer" service, good to see the community pull together to help ray.😊
Ray you are the Best.... Every Day you learn something New!
We all make mistakes, especially on things we are unfamiliar with, repeat the process again and you will become a master in the subject of not making that same mistake again.
Can I be the next hero ?
DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!
