The rifle of the British Empire! A beautiful and well handling rifle. It shoots a powerful cartridge (174 grain at 2400fps) without bruising your shoulder. I used to fire 100 rounds in one session and never felt uncomfortable afterwards.

Thanks to this video, the No. 1 Mk.III has become my favorite of the Lee Enfield series of rifles. I'd like to get one myself someday soon.

Great video. I have a 1918 Lithgow with specks of yellow paint on the nosecap, indicating that it was of a lesser grade, but still shootable cadet rifle. Having paid $80 for it, I might just try it this weekend to see if her pitted barrels still have life in her. Keep up the good work!

That is a beautiful rifle! $80 is an absolute steal, doubt you could get that back in the UK for so little... its practically a proud piece of British History!!!

When it comes down to supply of ammo and the price, you can't surpass the Mosin Nagant. It a damn accurate rifle and cheap. Not to mention, makes a great hunting rifle in times of recession. I have a couple.

Just shot one of these today. I must say that I very much love the power with each shot. And 80$ for that!? Damn that's cheap, you got a good deal :O

I just got a "sporterized" 1917 BSA #1 mk3* that I am going to restore to "era original" status. The bore on it is mirror bright with sharp rifling, I was amazed to see the good condition of it. I hope mine turns out as good as yours, JGS!
    Thanks for your videos!

The Lee-Enfield takes its name from the designer of the rifle's bolt system-James Paris Lee, and the factory in which it was designed-the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield.
    I totally live in Enfield!!

i used to get empty casing stoppage as well, but a gun smith buddy of mine who knows enfields inside out tweeked the extractor just a little, and it works magic, all the empty casings fly 5 ft to the right now. love the enfield though!

@kenny01622 most of these old bolt-actions used in WWI and WWII are pretty heavy because they are made of pretty dense, solid wood. They put wood completely underneath the barrel so you don't burn yourself on the hot barrel after shooting a few clips through it. You really don't get a good perspective of what it was like to use and carry a rifle around during wartime until you actually hold a rifle like this in your hands. Very solid.

Nice rifle mate my enfield was made in Australia in 1942 my father purchased it 20 years after it was made for 150 dollars and it has served my family well since. (it was in a large barrel with many other ex military enfields but after looking through them all dad found this one to be in bthe best nick).

@AllGunsConsidered I haven't seen the Jackson shop, but I have to look out for it now, since im only an hour away in Ann Arbor. I highly reccomend the Novi Antique Arms show, thats where I picked up my enfield, which I now use for ww1 and ww2 reenacting. Thanks for the tip!

true, it was the No. 3 rifle that was famous though. The No. 4 was made for recruits, and they did like the sights, but experts felt the No 1 Mk III was their favorite. It was quite the legend.

I'm from Aus and just got mine, just a long process and a limit to the type of action you can buy.
-Go to the cop shop and say you want to get your license, give them your name and address.
-Wait a week or two to be booked into a 3 hour safety course.
-Attach certificate to gun application and mail it to Licensing and Regulations Division
-28 days later your payment notice will arrive, pay $245, wait two weeks, license arrives, get a permit to acquire and go get a gun through a dealership

You could try bending up the two prongs at the front of the magazine with a pair of pliers just a tiny bit. You could also try taking the magazine apart: slide out the little piece of sheet metal on the front part of the magazine, then push down on the part of the follower where the front prongs are until the back part clears the rear prongs and slide it out, there should only be three pieces. If all else fails you can probably get a descent replacement at a gun shop/show.

it makes that "double report" due to two possibilities: 1-there's a hill background that reflects the sound back, ie echo, or 2-first sound is right at the muzzle and second sound is his round smacking his target.

@rob1516, in aust we have .303 SMLEs, of all makes and models from $50, to $5000, depending on conditions and blah blah, but because it was our main military rifle from 1890 to 1959 where they phased in the SLR 7.62, we have so so so so so many of them in circulation you can get them for so cheap and so much surplus ammunition, its very common.

Got ahold of a Lee Enfield, it's a MKII that was completely packed with cosmaline when I got it. I love the two foot long bayonet it has. Out of all the WWII infantry rifles as far as just being fun to shoot, I think the Enfield tops them all, (barely beating out the Garand, but beating it nevertheless.)

it is legal to own and shoot them in uk. i was at a shoot last weekend firing a 1916 lee enfield amongst others. very smooth rifle, not done a lot of shooting before and expected it to be a bit notchy for some reason but it was smooth as anything. great bit of engineering.

Wow, nice dude... I can tell by your user name that you too are a Michigan shooter! I think probably the best deal that I have seen is at the gun shop in Jackson (I don't remember the name of it)... But it's amazing that for only around the hundred dollar range you can own a piece of history. Same with the Mosins. Ya gotta love those WWI/WWII era bolt actions! :)

Bloody wonderful stuff! I've fired a couple of variations of the No.1 and No.4 on re-enactment, including an Ishy, but now finally (on Saturday) to be precise I get to go and get my very own No.1 Mk.III* 1917 Enfield made SMLE.
My only criticism as a re-enactor is your bolt operation. British Army drill said you should operate the bolt with the palm of the hand, pulling it up and towards with your palm towards you, and then rotating the hand and pushing down and away to cock. Still, impressive

Had a 1917 one complete with dial sight, very good wood, did shoot very well. had to sell it when became an expat. Still miss the thing. Also had to sell the Webley and Scott Mk6 in .455. Bought it in England, was never used. The officer that ordered it, was killed before he could collect it, the family stored the thing. Visited the grave of the officer in Flanders.

Hey man. I recently purchased a Savage Lee-Enfield No4 Mk I*. Everything on it works great and its really nice condition for its age. Only thing that isnt quite that great is the magazine release. Its really stiff and hard to activate so i can remove the magazine. Do you think its just stiff where it hasnt been used in a while? Cause its difficult to get the magazine out and i want to try and make it easier if possible. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • @PrisonnerofToday
    @PrisonnerofToday 15 років тому

Agreed. There's four of them for sale in the local classified for about 150-200 each, Canadian Dollars. Admittedly, they have been "sporterized" (what a waste), but I've never seen a full stocked rifle run over 300, no matter how mint of condition it was in, even if it came with origional bayonet and so forth.

  • @bigbuckeye76

There was an "American" Enfield, it was the US Model M1917. It was an almost exact copy of the Pattern 14 Enfield rifle, only chambered in 30.06. More Americans used this rifle in WWI than they did the 1903 Springfield.

  • @No1sonuk

    They really sound like that.
It's partly because it's a big bullet ( .223 /5.56mm tend to "crack" more), but also the totally enclosed barrel.

Very nice. My 1918 has that little dish on the stock as well. Do you think it's possible they intended to fit them to the rifles when there was time and then after the war they just decided it wasnt really cost effective? Probably not but who knows.
The bore on mine is a bit worn out so its not a fantastic shooter but its still one of my favorite rifles.

Did Mannlicher figure in 2nd WW ?. I used to fiddle with one when i was a kid, oil and work the bolt (no ammo!!) it was in an old barn at my uncles farm, i could barely lift the thing. It was a legacy from early Irish troubles. Long since surrendered to cops, but gave me a passion for firearms. Thanks for your videos mate.

I hope your still looking at posts because I need your help. I have a 1917 SHT Lee Enfield 303 with what appears to be mismatched parts. The barrel doesn't have the traditional cap instead it protrudes out of the stock about 2 3/4". The sights are mounted on top of the barrel not back on the receiver. But I've never seen a rifle configured like this. The rifles with no end cap have the sights mounted back on the receiver and the rifles with end caps have sights mounted on the receiver. Can you help me with this quandary?

Well, I have owned 2 SMLES (currently in possession of just one), and I have closely examined a Mosin, as I was considering getting on just as a collector type piece, something old and fun to have about. My SMLE is for "serious" stuff, my re-enactment etc.
Personally, yes the Mosin is a good solid, serviceable gun, but it just lacks the refinements that would make it great. Bolt handle issues, and so forth. The SMLE is far from rickety, just the Lee action is smoother, hence the feel.

Though .30 carbine did under perform in Korea, however the stories of the round failing to penetrate winter clothing was found to be a myth.
If anything the .30 carbine penetrated TOO much, a narrow, heavy round at relatively high velocity, it zips right through so to an observer it would appear like the bullet was stopped from penetrating.
The .30-06 and.303 were the same calibre but usually fragmented on impact making much more gory wounds.
But para-troops loved it for how compact it was.
