- In this video I show how I troubleshot and repaired the self-propulsion system on my lawn mower, to take it from completely inoperable to fully working in about an hour and half, including travel time to go buy a couple of parts. Total cost of the repair including tax was around $24. And it was really easy to do.
Didn’t need this. This isn’t the problem with my mower at all. But I watched every second of it because your delivery and presentation is what I look for in all UA-cam videos. No extra nonsense and simple quick explanation. You get a like, sir.
SAME!!!
same lol
Cool story
@@johnauger1686 Thanks!
Fiskars StaySharp Max Reel Mower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend This is what all push mowers should strive for. It was easy to push. It cut the lawn. The blades are sharp, very sharp. The one minus that everyone should be aware of is you need to be very careful taking the cutting unit out of the box. There’s a plastic guard so you don’t cut fingers as you take the main unit out of the box but it’s not taped down. As I took the unit out, I ended cutting a piece of my shirt. The plastic guard moved and my shirt touched one of the blades.
The assembly of the lawn mower could be done without any problems ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend I just puzzled something about the red strange “key”. However, it quickly turned out that this creates a kind of contact bridge between battery packs and lawn mowers. An additional backup as a father of a 1 year old nephew is great!! :-)
how much they paying you for advertising that garbage?
This is a beautiful video production and repair for someone who "doesn't anything about lawn mower repair", I enjoyed watching it very much, thank you!!!
Straight and to the point, Excellent video. No annoying music dubbed in, no drawn out speeches that have nothing to do with the reason we are here to watch the video, no teeth sucking and swallowing spit loudly.
Thank you
You may know nothing about lawn mower mecanics but as far as producing videos, this is clearly a professionnal job !
You have to replace the walnuts nuts in the wheels every couple of years so the walnut oil will keep the gears in the wheels lubed. I use the Mobile 1 synthetic walnuts.
Good one guy. I found today by taking tire off that I had a walnut and a 1" square piece of sheet metal in mine. Walnut must be more popular than you might think to be in there.
Lol
At first I was thinking a squirrel hid the nut in there, but he would have needed a socket wrench handy to get the wheel off first. That's an interesting mystery!
Killer reply, 🤣 LMAO twice.
Thanks to people like you the common people can learn and save a few bucks
Great job on the video. Short, sweat and to the point. And very clear, without obstructions of your body or head. I'm subscriber 1.3K
Thank you. I never mess with mechanics but you have encouraged me to do it. I have removed the front wheels and now just need to buy new ones. So easy that eve an electrician can do it.
Outstanding video. I just went through this with my Husqvarna push mower. After replacing the drive cable and drive belt, I found out the wheel gears were completely worn out. Now, it is like a brand new push mower.
Awesome!
I have a awd husqvarna and I think my rear transmission is gone. The rear wheel gears don’t appear to worn but the axle kinda clicks when I engage the the leaver. The front wheels won’t spend at all
Excellent concise editing and commentary. Thanks.
Good clear method of step by step diagnosis and repair. A little common sense and a willingness to ‘give it a try’ go a long way in the world of repairing things.
The quality of this video is outstanding. Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW! Thanks SO much for this video. I have a very similar craftsman mower I got for free, and I was about to swap the entire transmission for nothing. My front drive wheels were completely worn just like yours! Again, thanks for the video!
Best video I watched out of any self propelled mowers and how they work
Damn dude, same exact situation down to the first pull start up each season! You have helped me find my problem. Thanks man!
Thanks for this. Worked perfectly.
Now, this is a video I can get behind... Just like anything in life, if you neglect It, It will neglect you.
Cheers!
Wow I like what you said. That could be applied to anything in life. Thanks again!!
Excellent video. You should grease the axle bolts to keep them from rusting onto the inside of the wheel.
First class video, great filming and clear voice over, thank you, from u.k.
Thank you! :)
thank you I will check my front wheels the v belt and gear and cable cord were all good the tires I didn't check Kudos!
Thanks for making this video. I am trying to learn about how this propelled system works and this video was perfect for that.
Excellent video. Well produced.
I was having the same issue. I opened up the wheels and found a 2 inch rock in the wheel!! Thanks!!
This helped me diagnose my problem on my own...thank you!!!
awesome. these old mowers are the best
Cool video dude you are the people we need more of I'm your 70 subscriber good luck dude 😀
I'm 72 and I need all of the help I can get. Though I'm a woman also I do a lot of my own repair work but I need a little extra help at times.
Great Video!!!!!!!!! Straight to the point. Thank you
Another great lawn mower video. This is how I will check the transmission. But the plastic tires on my old mower is worn down to the rims and the wheels are all cockeyed. I will have to gently break them lose with a hammer because I do know those wheels are shot. Thanks.
I'm gonna check my front wheels for shaven gears. What's weird is the self-propelled worked yesterday then it stopped today. But I'll still check.
Self propulsion or front wheel drive, sounds like a jet engine .. great vid by the way 💪👍
well done good use of narration, not too long
I suggest that you replace the metal pinion gears also. They are metal, but wear as well and will cause the plastic wheel gears to strip again shortly. Know this by my own experience.
Great video...thanks!
Epic Crocs, bro!
I wear Crocs every chance I get. With socks, too! :)
Discovered the gears were non existent on right wheel, plastic. Ordered a pair, replaced the bad one, back in business. 😎
This is exactly what happened to ours. Thanks!
Great presentation.
Thank you so much!
Good video,
Nice job.
great video!!
lubricate the wheel axles...usually the reason the wheels strip out is because of resistance on the axle itself.
good video! disconnect the spark plug first and lubricate the wheels before installing them. 👍
I'm having similar problems with my mower, when I engage the wheel drive I get a clicking sound for a couple of seconds before it starts moving. My mower is only 4 years old but it does about half an acre of lawn.
For some reason I got one these mowers and the front left tire the rod that goes thru the tire is all ridged like they replaced it with wrong rod so I'm gonna grind it smooth
You rock man!
I drilled screws through so the spikes stick out and the metal drive wheels catxh the drive side of the screws like their teeth the protruding screws add traction
How well has this held up? Might try the same thing
Should the metal gear in contact with the wheel turn freely? Mine turns about a quarter rotation freely before it begins to stiffen and turn the other wheel.
Any link where I can buy the ball bearing? Good video
8 very good explanation 👍
Thanks!
Good job
Good video I must say.
Thanks! :)
Great video. But definitely a common issue with FWD craftsman including mine. Bad design. Metal gear vs. Plastic. Guess which gives. Especially when you're bumping into fences.
Adam L Amen - poor design! Thanks!
Adam L it is bad when u turn on and off the self propell I just leave mine on and it will last longer
@@anthonynarducci7344 I had to replace broken cable to drive, hmm, might try your idea.
Heather Montgomery glad I could help I’ve had problems with the drive wheels I’m the past eating up gears and one of my friends told me to just leave it engaged the whole time so the torque from the metal dosent eat up the plastic gears
I have a craftsman lawn mower with##194232 front wheel drive wheel cannot find one with this number. Will a wheel #194231 fit?
THANK YOU
Thank you
So, what button do I push to watch the video?
How do you replace the idler pulley of that particular mower. Thanks
Can lawnmower transmission be fitted for brush mower
Do you have a video on how to replace the belt
If the from pulley is not spinning, and the belt is loose.
What would you suggest?
Can you remove the rubber part from the plastic part?
great voice
Thank you.
YT is a great resource for providing answers. Problem is YT became politically involved and remove massive amounts of content helpful contect.
The wheels really wear out. The gears were pretty good, but the tread was all gone. It took two years to wear the tires to bald.....George Sparky Smith.
I wonder if u place a little lube once in awhile on the gears , would that extend the life of the gears ???? Just curious. You have that metal drive gear against the plastic gear of the wheel. The plastic gear of the wheel has to wear down quickly. Well, I think it won't hurt.
dig the crocs!
Always! :)
So I replaced my front wheels about a year ago (gears were all worn off). Now I find that the same thing has happened. Any idea what would cause them to wear off that quickly? Some sort of misalignment? Thanks!
Do you live in an area with sandy soil? It could be accelerating the wear. I would tell you to grease the wheel gears, but that could make it retain even more abrasive grit.
Never add oil and grease to the gear box on these. I did and now it no longer turns when lever is engaged. Maybe there is too much oil in it? I have no clue.
That craftsman needs the white 3 spoke rear wheels to match the fronts. Beautiful Craftsman. Needs to be cleaned too, why don’t people ever take care of their equipment properly 🙄 mine gets a wipe down after every use.
So I replaced the wheels. One wheel drives, but the other doesn't. I have noticed the wheel that won't turn is slightly cockeyed (Points left of straight). now what do I do?
You should be able to get around with the one wheel but if it bothers you, maybe you can replace the wheel bearing behind the drive gear.
Another video shows that when the teeth are worn off its caused by the shaft bearings on each of the adjusters that fails..means LOOK and spend the extra 20 bucks to do it right. Replace those bearings if the gear itself has significant movement 1/8th inch or more.. it should be FIRM..
Can you reference that video? Thanks
why did you not use the key start you don't have to pull the cord do you just turn the key
Lynette Braun the battery for the starter was not charged. I've tried charging it recently and it won't hold a charge anymore. it's about 10 years old or so.
Is there a story behind those drywall screws in the side port cover?
The cover that changes the mower from mulching mode to side discharge mode is beneath that. The side discharge port (the thing you can see with the screws in it) liked to fall off - it's just held on with spring tension. So I ran a few screws through it into the cover below it. Now it doesn't fall off. 😁
Not my issue, but very clear and informative.
Am I the ONLY Craftsman lawnmower owner to wash the deck and undercarriage of my mower AFTER each use?
No I do that too with my Craftsman mower. I even have an identical one I got for $10 of Facebook Marketplace for spare parts.
Them damn squirrels will hide nuts anywhere.
$11 bucks each! Good luck finding that price these days. $18 each at HD
You Made Me Lawn Yeah the small engine shop where I got these is now out of business. 😟 Probably harder to find now.
you no why this mower is acting up?? lol cause I need to mow the forest I got going on
Craftsman’s rear drives have metal gear inside the wheel and a gear that’s impossible to remove on the mower axel (hence why I’m here). This didn’t help. Plastic gear wheels are mad old and just aren’t an issue anymore.
Gotta love that everything is plastic now...
And crafted with sloppiness in Wuhan China!
My wheel is stuck on
Mine makes a noise and smells like something is burning. It won't pull. The mower works otherwise.
My name is mikey and I have the same mower lol
both wheels on my craftsman are locked up.
Nanny Parr sorry to hear that, sounds like it's over my head though. 🤔
How many years must they serve? County, state or federal pen?
Correction: that is clearly a hickory nut, not a walnut. I really know my nuts.
Nope. That is a black walnut.
And for those who are changing their front wheels for the first time, welcome to the "you will be changing them every year" club. This was a terrible design(quality of material) by Craftsman (Husqvarna)....
If you want to try to have them last a little longer try these things: (while the self propulsion is engaged) DO NOT:
-Hit anything in your yard (curb, house, landscaping etc).
-Slam the mower down after lifting the front wheels off the ground (such as after turning your mower in another direction)
-Turn your mower while the front wheels are still on the ground
Basically try to keep higher pressure off the front wheels. This will allow the plastic gearing inside the wheels to last longer and not wear out prematurely.
First set of wheels lasted 12 years after that every twelve months at twenty euro a wheel. I took it easy with the second set of replacements but the deck rotted through and feel in half. Got 14 years out of it. Hope I live to see how long these new composite decks last and if something else starts to fail early on.
@@mullagh670 I hear ya, 1st set of wheels lasted the longest. I ended up replacing the bearings on the 3rd set and that has been holding up well. The worn out bearings cause the gearing mesh of the wheels/drive gear to fail prematurely. They should be replaced together to be honest
this is an example of really bad engineering: a metal teeth meshing with plastic. It might be called: Planned collapse.
Now paint the ugly back wheels lol
Ha! I was just thinking about the back wheels the other day. Wondered if anybody wondered why they were green. I had to replace those previously and green is what they had. :)
$11 per wheel for plastic teeth guaranteed to fail? Geeze
Yeah, I know. Maybe there are cheaper (or better) ones online? But I haven't looked. I went with the nearby/convenient option at a local store.
