Hey what if the front of my self propell wont fully release most the time. Its the same mower. I replaced the belt. Everything seems fine but the front in the awd will not disengage. Any suggestions?
Thanks for being a real man and sharing your knowledge
How do I adjust one with the single handle ?
Amazing video. My lawnmower has been getting worse for years and I have just gotten use to it. I watched this video 10 min ago, went out and adjusted the cable. Now, for the first time in a couple years, I'm able to mow straight up my hill. Thank you so much for the advise.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
My wife thanks you for fixing her lawn mower😅
Any time!
My husband recently passed away unexpectedly and I’m having to take care of my yard for the first time in my late 30’s! 😅 Fingers crossed this works!
sorry for your lost ! 😢 and good luck
If you ever need any help let me know :)
I found the problem was I didn't have a beer to sip. :-(
Thank you so much! My husband is a disabled Veteran so the mowing is my responsibility. We live in WV & the yard is too sloped for a riding mower. I have been struggling with the self propelled for 2 seasons now! I watched this, went out & adjusted & off we went!!!!!! Thank you so much!
You're Welcome...and please thank your husband for his service for me!
I have the opposite problem I let go of the the self propelle bar and the wheels keep turning! Will adjusting the cable fix that problem?
Hey there Steve nice video man... I was hoping to see the other kind of cable with no nut and just hooks to the bottom handle... I've broken my head tryna to adjust the cable but I think it's just impossible... Can u plz help me out?.. Thank u... here's one on me \%/
I've got a self propelled mower/mulcher just given to me, but I don't think it's front wheels drive ? I've never heard of a 4x4 lawn mower 🤣
What about the ones with just a cable going to the handle with no adjustment spot? Is it down on the front end wear it drives from? sorry for the double questions. good video again thanks.

another good video... do you show how to swap out the belt drive .... removing procedure ... what to look for on the belt & pulleys if good or not .... and finally how to re-assemble
Thankyou so much Steve. My local garden machine repair man, is a) very charming b) charges like a wounded bull. You've saved me a small fortune.
Big heavy old lawnmower skipping about as if it's turbo charged. Sooo easy too. Thanks again P
You're Welcome...
Thank you, Steve! This is a great video you made, easy to follow and implement. My RWD Husqvarna has had less and less self-propulsion performance over the last couple of years….since you gave me a leg-up this was a zero-sip job! In less than 2 minutes it works like new! Thank you again!
Great to hear!
@Steve's Small Engine Saloon hi Steve!!! Big fan, and I have a unique problem and NEED YOUR HELP!!! I sent you an email also.
@@lunaticgaming7967 must look at my lawn mower see where that is to try tighten is it near the handle thanks very intereseted
Is there a way to adjust the tension spring. I have adjust the cable, replaced the belt ( probably should have watch your video first) but maybe I have the tension wrong when I put the nut back on the post. Can you show us the tension adjustment on the fear box please?
Every mower place I call and the minute they hear self propel looked at they dont want to work on it or their suddenly booked. Why is everyone afraid of self propel maintenance. I hope this works for me
Thanks Steve, I replaced the belt, all pulleys look good and I did the cable adjustment. My front wheels do not turn or pull....... I sure could use your help! Thanks again for your videos!
1 dislike is from the "lawnmower technician" who lost that sweet belt replacement job.
LOL! Probably....
yeah and the other five are guys who been sayin "sorry honey the mowers broke"
Thanks man. I was thinking I was going to buy a new one because I was getting tired of pushing this thing around. Your video showed me how to adjust the cable and fix it FAST. You da man!!
You're Welcome...
Thanks for another entertaining and educational video, Steve. Always learn something new each time I watch. Keep 'em coming.
You're Welcome...
Did not see how to fix cable on self propelled lawn mower it cuts off on the video
My problem is going forward!!! Mine will NOT release the wheels to pull unit backwards….WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING!!! When the engine is OFF,it pulls back as easy as it pushes forward😡😡. Can’t find a video ANYWHERE on how to fix this! Also, when running I can lift the rear wheels off the ground, with the lever NOT pulled and the wheels keep pulling!!!🧐. I’m about to throw TWO otherwise good mowers in the dump😡🤣🤣🤣🤣🍻🇺🇸
Thank you Steve....just went outside and adjusted my cable and it works great. You are the man🍻🍻
Excellent!
Hi Steve, many thanks for your many helpful videos! Re-viewing this video to solve a problem....still stuck! Mower is Husky(Honda engine), front wheel drive only. Left wheel drives fine, left barely moves! Any help wood be appreciated! Cheers!
I have a similar Husqvarna Honda-engined mower and really don't like the design. The cable isn't the only reason you can lose the wheel drive -- the belt-compartment on the underside of the mower can get stuffed with grass clippings. I got tired of cleaning it out so I eventually modified the cover for the belt-compartment.
is it worth replacing the rings in a briggs 13m02-0070-f1 off a husquavarna lc221a that just developed blow-by? or just get a new motor?
Great info, simple and entertaining!👏 Nice work. If you discover you may have a problem with alcohol I can help with that. “Two sip job”😂 I used to crush pbr in the garage too. Made my mouth water seeing that open can in the video😬
Thanks Steve. The beer was still cold by the end of that fix. Now how do you make it go backwards without pulling it LoL.
Steve, I have a dumb question. I have a Honda HRX 217 mower. When I want to start turning on the blade clutch, do I throw the leaver on quickly or slowly?? Thanks
Are the AWD Husqvarna push mowers the only ones easily fixed? I have a rear wheel drive only mower, which I tried screwing out the cable, and it made the handles harder to pull (I'm affraid they'll break) and the mower just barely goes. Any chance of making a video for the 2 wheel drive type? Thanks
Third time you saved me this summer on a 2 yr old Honda GCV 160 Snapper self propelled mower. Ran into the lawn mower repair guy at Lowes asking where I’ve been this season. I said ,”I got a new man in my life helping me now.” He said, “Ohhhh.” Me: “His name is uh …Steve. Just Steve…Yeah”. Him: “Oh…well ok. That’s uh good. Have a good one.” Walks away. That was awkward. Thanks for helping a gal learn how to make many repairs with confidence. Saved again! 😊
Right on
First time I see a four-wheel drive. Thanks for the info. I was notified because I rang the bell.
Awesome my friend...
Hi Steve1 i watch your videos because you know how to explain it well! I just had my Husqvarna serviced for a belt, it’s a rear wheel drive model, I find that the wheels catch when I pull the lever but then it gets hard to pull back, is the cable too tight or too loose. Thanks!
Good afternoon! Thanks for such a great channel. Please help me today if you can! I have a snapper rear propelled lawn mower, and I have been having constant issues with the drive handle, and it's almost total slackness in the cable. The belt is fine, and in the past my local lawn mower repair place always replaces it....They tell me I have to replace the Is entire mechanism every time it does this becauseit'snot ajustable. However, When they replace it, it's not fixed. There is a mechanism near the engine attached to a cable called the transmission spring tention, but it warns one must be careful because it could cause too much tension on thetransmission.I do not see any way to get into the handle mechanism. And all I see underneath the handle mechanism, Is a very tiny nut.Not looking quite like the one in your video periodI just came across this video, And before going outside. I thought I would ask your opinion on this snapper whether or not it is adjustable and/or whether I should be adjusting the diagram mechanism at all. And do you think this type of handle canby titans, And or fixed? Thank you very, very much in advance for any help.Or advice you can give me as I do not have the money or even a truck to get it to a mechanic. Plus I'm disabled from 9 spinal surgeries and a knee.Really need to get this thing going. Thanks again periodHave a great day!
6 dislikes are from people who got screwed over because they don’t watch Steve’s channel
Right on...
Steve that's a great video I do the same for my people. Instead of emailing you on your website do you think you could do a video on the repair or adjustment of the Honda Transmissions these types seem to be finicky and have different adjustments. Some think the transmission is bad but it's an adjustment that I can't remember adjusting on it and I've been all over UA-cam again looking maybe you know what I'm talking about.
Hey Steve I have a john deere s100 riding mower I'm having trouble with the deck scraping the ground when I mow so I adjusted the deck and still having problems I mow on a 1-1/2 any advice
I have the same AWD mower. It recently started to run away without engaging the drive feature. I had to release the bale so the engine would shut down to keep the drive wheels from digging up the lawn. This happens frequently and spontaneously. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am currently having that problem Was a Honda HRR216Harmoy 2... I would like to see if I can do that if there is an adjustment but my cable spring that comes up to the handle that you pull back Broke And I don't think this will work but I will try it Thanks I appreciate your suggestions
PBR nobody can just sip twice--or wait maybe that’s potato chips. I only knew this because I left my mower outside int rain heat humidity. You know what broke. Threw bad one away used twisted wire Jimmy rigged about 4 years ago. Keep it inside now
Great video. My cable feels like it's not connected. Used self-propell once. Need to figure it out. :-)
D0 u know how to adjust the self propelled on a commercial 30 exmark command pro I can't find nothing on it and I'm trying to help my grandfather fix his mower
Yeah looks like another good video but I haven't actually checked it out completely yet. Thanks man. Do you think some of these drive mechanisms are getting too complicated for their own good ?
Hi Steve , great channel.
I was using my honda mower , self propelled was working fine. hit a patch of sticks and it quit moving , the belt is free and intact . it wont budge. Help pleez .
thanx
I was 12 years old when I figured this out on my bicycle brakes.
I didn't even have to figure it out, it was too obvious.
@steve. I have a Toro self propelled mower that makes screeching/screeming when I engage the self propelled function. Have any idea on what I need to do? I'll buy you a beer if you can help out (ok, 3 beers).
Mine doesnt have that adjustment. My mower is a Husqvarna 5521 CHV. The lever to start the self propelled motion is a bar that goes across the handle length. Just has a cable and a stopper.
My Troy-built cable wouldn't stay in position after I would adjust it. The lawnmower wasn't moving much as it was. At the end of summer the cable did break and now I need to figure out if it's just the cable or other things going on. It's a bit older and someone gave it to me after my old mower started cooking and froze up.
Any videos on replacing the cable?
I replaced belt and cable still won’t pull up hills like it did new!! Like it won’t spin like yours did in video?? Do you think the aftermarket cheaper cable is differtsize then oem part u have posted ?
Yeah.... guess if I got old school simple bale engagement I'm just SOL🤔
I have a Husqvarna, and the self propell cable needs to be adjusted, i know it just needs to be tightened bcuz when i pull a little bit on it, it will engage, but i dont have the levelers like you show, so do i have to replace it or am i missing the tightener?
Anyone got any feedback on my issue.. When I engage my rear wheel drive toro self propel. The wheels will spin if I lift the mower up.. But as soon as I put it back on the ground... Nothing... Any suggestions? Does that mean a weak belt or bad transmission? Thanks ahead of time..
COMPLETE LIFE SAVER!! Thank you for showing me this I was just about to send my mower away for 150$ or more and two week wait time. All for a simple cable tighten. The 3/8 gave me a little trouble at first but once I was able to loosen and crank it all the way down it worked like a charm!!!! Saved 200$ and 2 weeks. AWESOME
Fantastic!
I thought your mower was pretty cool with the "All wheel drive" feature and then I noticed that it doesn't even have a cupholder ! Whats up with that ? ? ?
Love that you gauge the repairs by sips / cans of beer. Cheers.
I have a newer mower that doesn't have the adjusting nut on the cable. I replaced the drive belt with one from a big box store. It works much better now, perhaps too much better. There is a noise while running as though the new belt is slipping by one of the pulleys. And without any pressure on the drive bar the mower pulls forward. I'm sure I placed all parts in the correct location. It seems like the belt is a little too small. Any advice?
Dude! Thanks. You just got me the biggest smile from my wife! I gave you a like AND a subscribe!
Right on Danny! Thank You...
I been adjusting the cable on my awd self propelled mower and if I lift the rear wheels they’ll spin but the front wheels spin at all. Plus when I engage the cable I’m hearing a lot of clicks sounds like it’s slipping
But Steve, mine is one of those "goes as fast as you push it" mowers from Toro. Doesn't quite propel itself as fast as I'd like it to. It also cuts out intermittently like there's a carb float problem.
How can I get my blade bolt that has been twisted off in the shaft on my craftsman 7.25 self performed mower
The cable system on my Murray is different. It's has pellet like head that goes through a loop that is attached to the propeller bar rather than a handle. Anyone has one like this?
I have a sears Craftsman with a honda engine. It only has ONE handle to engage the self-propel. The fixture that the cable enters into has a little button on the bottom that one is supposed to pull out then push back in and that is apparently supposed to adjust the cable. Nope. The self-propel does work, but only if I push the mower first to get it engaged. Sucks big time.
I have one that will go fast as a rabbit or not at all. Cable adjusting didn't fix it. Do I need to replace the belt?
Thanks so much for your time
On my powersmart mower ,it doesn’t even move when I press it ,it was working fine and suddenly it stopped moving , I have to push it to cut the grass , any suggestions thank you
To get it adjusted right, should I turn the adjustment in until mower doesn’t move, then gradually back off on it until the rear wheels begin moving then just leave it there?
Mine is the opposite problem it won't shut off ..just keeps moving even when leaver is let go. any idea?
An AWD lawn mower?! Now I've seen it all...
That’s cool. Mine only drives the front
I think that would be a pain. With fwd it is really easy to back up.or turn, without disengaging the drive.
Steve, I just replaced the belt and the self propel still didn't work. I noticed that the adjustment was turned all the way in so I adjusted it, after watching your video and it worked, however, i had to adjust it all the way out to make it work. I am thinking they gave me the wrong belt. Any thoughts?
That was the easiest fix I've ever done. Thanks for saving me time and money with trouble shooting this issue.
You're Welcome...
Self propelled lawn mower = teenager
For the older guys as well like STEVE ! HA HA
Hey Steve I seen a self propelled push mower the other day. It had a lever on the handle that you pull and then push a button and a spring pulls it somehow and starts it up. Then when you turn it off it rewinds the spring and sounds horrible also it has a key. Do you know anything like that I didn't get the name of it and I really need to know. It was awesome.
Great video, easy fix if you get good info.
Thank You...
Unfortunately this remedy doesn’t seem to work on my Snapper lawnmower.
Mine is a handle bar type self propelled so doesn't have the adjustment on the cable... Any hints?
Steve, would this work on a self propelled greenworks mower also? I don't believe that I have seen an out side adjustment cable on this machine. I bought if from a liquidator that got it from Costco as a return. Probably returned for that reason. Greenworks doesn't seem to have a very good parts supply dept. The authorized dealers here tell me that Greenworks just sends a new lawnmower to them if mower is under warranty which my mower is not. The dealer tells me that is likely the mother board but I is brand new so I am hoping it is just a cable adjustment?
Great video Steve. I know it is an older video but I had to comment (and subscribe) I had this problem with my mower and searched online. Several videos said to check belts, pulleys, etc. This should be first thing to check. Simple fix and mower is working great now. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
You mentioned once cable adjustment is advanced and then you don't self prepel you said it could then be the belt , you didn't mention the tension pulley not spinning as well thanks .
Can the same adjustment be made on the throttle cable? I have noticed that I have to get the throttle cable a little extra tug to get my mower started from time to time.
Whenever I have any mower probs I always stop at Steve's Saloon before doing anything. Now you can see why.
Thank You...
My self propelled has a spring for tension not an adjustable nut
I changed the drive wheels out and also adjusted the belt the gears where shot it will barely move is it possible the belt is stretch to much just bought this 2005 troy bilt
Great Vid, But this is in the instruction manual for a mower. instructions are not made to just throw away
they print them for a reason. :-)
Right on...
yes but telling people and geting them to read are two diff problems, then theres the internet, todays excuse for companies to charge more and not include any paper print manuals or instructions.
Does the instruction manual come with a search function?
:-)
Instructions unclear got dick stuck in ceiling fan
My self prepelled is stuck in drive. How do you fix this?
Ok the cable stretches and I adjust and the cable snaps and breaks. It's a bitch to replace too.
I’m gonna try this but this mower has a battery on the side going to try to charge that first.. it has gas and I already tighten leaver all the way
Has the guy that’s fixed lots of mowers never own a pushbike? I though most people would have knew what that was for
Looking how to replace the cable that propels the mower. The spring is broke 5:14
Thanks, Steve! I actually had a stick stuck under the belt, but it needed adjustment , as well. You just saved me a headache and some money! Much appreciated.
You're Welcome...
there is a plastic plug inside on my mower that broke of on the control unit.
Where’s the adjustment on a Craftsman with a single lever that hooks on lever? Thx
Wow. Just 3 turns? I just replaced a rusted out deck on a rear drive. I assumed it was working when given to me, but the wheels won't engage. I checked belt and it was 35.5 and spec is 34.6 so I just assumed adjusting wouldn't fix it. Will try adjusting since new belt not here yet.
I just watched a machinist make a v pulley and she showed that she messed it up as the belt went too far into groove and inner of belt touched the pulley id. She says pulley must be off that centre of pulley and only contact the sides or it will slip. Makes sense why burned belts always slip as burnt sides let belt move down and contact pilley centre
So I was going to adjust old belt but it was already removed and new belt arrived. Problem is that new belt won't slip to a neutral. So I put old belt on and it will eventually grab when the adjuster is out as far as possible, many, many turns. I thought maybe new belt was shorter than spec . But it measures 34.5 which it should. I guess I'll try a 35.0 belt.
The real pain, is some of those "cheaper" Box Store Honda "hr215?" where the transaxle has little "clutch springs" behind the Rear Wheels that wear out...
Luckily, they are Very Inexpensive!
Thanks for another great video Steve!
Take care,
🤓-Thomas
I cant find what modil my lawnmore is is it posibale to send you a photos of the lawnmore
Do you have a video on cable replacement on a rear wheel drive Subaru lawn mower?
perfect! you just saved us from purchasing a new lawnmower
Glad I could help!
My levers won't move
It set for 2 years in wind weather what's wrong with it?
Thank you for your video. I adjusted the cable as suggested and my Husqvarna AWD which was not working is working like new..
COOL!
Mine didn't adjust at the handle but I traced it down and found that adjustment down by the motor, but yessir, I haven't tried it yet but I've already adjusted it too tight, so backed it off. Going out to use it right now. Thank you.
Right on
Too easy, this goes into my info box, hey, my stihl blower was acting up the other day, I remembered the spark arrestor, 10 minute swim in petrol then a quick hit of compressed air..... goin like a charm!!
Right on Red...
thank you so much steve I really appreciate it this video. fix my problem with my honda lawnmower. 👍
Great to hear!
I need to tighten the two gray hooks half way down so my handle will stay up
That is the same as adjusting the brakes on a bicycle .
I have a cub cadet 98 m and when pull the self-propelled lever it starts making a squealing noise sometimes it will move a little. Do I need a new belt? I really enjoy your videos. They have helped me a lot. Thanks!
I did try this technique.
