    Hi Dave. Good review. I am sure if I missed it, but does it stop down as we magnify further? If so, at what magnification does it start to stop down and how many stop at the 1:1 end?

    It would be so cool when IRIX starts manufacturing lenses in the Sony E-mount. You did a fantastic job defining the IRIX 150mm. Just love all of your videos. I find the 150mm macro a rather unique focal length, it seems almost a specialty lens.

    Thanks for doing this review.
    I have been eagerly awaiting your review on the optical performance of this lens.
    The Tokina 100mm macro has been very tempting, based upon the very positve reviews it has had, but I would prefer a slightly longer focal length macro, and this new Irix lens has had me on the edge of my seat.
    I would love to see a few comparisons before I actually take the plunge, but it looks very impressive so far.
    I had the 90mm Tamron G2, but my daughter has now laid claim to that (bless her), so I need a replacement.
    Thanks again.
    Paul

    I shoot outdoor, existing light nature/landscape/wildlife so macro shots require a little more room to work macro subjects so 150mm is great. I don't imagine I'll ever use f2.8 for macro work but it might come in handy for other subjects. So far Irix lenses compare very well to Zeiss manual focus lenses, so very keen to check this one out.

    Since I dropped my old Sigma 2.8 150mm, and Sigma refused to repair it - due to lack of spare parts, I find this 150mm irix very interesting, especially because a new sigma 150mm lens cost around 1000 euro. Ok, that’s with OS and autofocus. But hey, i don’t need that for macros. Thx for your review.

      I was able to briefly try out a production version at a UK photo show a few months after this review.
      The copy I tried seemed to have fixed the lens hood gripe and the focus ring seemed a bit smoother (although that could potentially be that the lens was more worn in than my copy)
      In terms of using on the Z7, I not tried it personally but I've seen photos of people putting it into Z-series bodies with the FTZ and they never mentioned any issues

  • @oopsydaisy74

    i see that the lens has electronic contacts, does this mean it transmits exif data? Does focus assist engage when you turn the ring on the Sony? Does the focal length get transmitted to Sony body for steadyshot?

    • @DaveMcKeegan

      Yes the lens still communicates fully with the camera and it also controls the aperture from the camera as well

      Dave McKeegan very good news. I’ve been considering this lens versus the Voigtlander 110 for macro beauty work. I like that this lens is a lot longer focal length than my bread and butter 85, but I do wish it was native e-mount like the Voigtlander. $600 vs $1100 though...

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  5 років тому

      I know Irix are hoping to get E-mount available in the future, although in all fairness it doesn't actually make any real difference since the lens is manual focus. Yes you don't have to mess around with an adapter but the lens is also smaller without the adapter on so fits easier in your kitbag

      Yes, confused as to why they decided on 150 versus 60 or even 90. Perhaps they like the extreme end of the spectrum, which their wides are that for certain.

    • @TheMetalButcher
      @TheMetalButcher 5 років тому

      @@seanbond8075 I think that since these new lens makers don't have AF or IS, they have had to go to the extremes to really get sales and hype about their lenses. Look at Venus optics. 24mm probe. 10-18 FF. Crazy stuff. Seems like it works though. 150 isn't all that extreme though since there are 180mm macros.

    Hello, sorry to be off topic. I was just checking out your gear list. Would you please explain the purposes of your 28mm vs your 35mm? Thank-you. Edit: Also, would you do a monopod tutorial?

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  5 років тому +1

      35mm is a great looking focal length but sometimes just isn't wide enough, that's where I often use the 28mm - most of my videos are shot at 28mm.
      Honestly I don't use a monopod as I find them a bit restrictive. I either use a tripod for landscapes / long exposures, or I am hand holding

    I personally don't understand the need for a 150mm lens, for I think the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro OSS get a little closer macro shot and would in my opinion be a better portrait lens. However, I'm sure someone who is doing a lot of wildlife photography might find the extra reach useful. Though by the time you get the subject (Animal) in focus it probably has scampered off, for I think the main reason you had the macro lens on your camera body in the first place was to do macro shooting.

    • @zeuhnciean4161
      @zeuhnciean4161 5 років тому

      It is a lens specialised for macro photography and the working distance isn't the only advantage of a 150mm lens. It also makes for a smoother, creamier Bokeh compared to 100mm or 90mm lenses and the shallower depth of field makes it easier to separate the object from the surroundings.

    If this lens performs equally well at infinity as it does in the close-up range, this could be e very interesting general-purpose telephoto prime. As someone who has absolutely no problem with manual focus lenses (in fact, this is most of what I actually have), I'm intrigued!

    I have this lens (IRIX 150mm ) for a couple of months now, but I notice something very strange. Every time I mounted this lens on a camera (in this case a Canon camera) the battery depletes faster, even goes down when the camera is setting down in the off position. I had contact IRIX about this but I haven’t heard any resolution to this yet.
    I’ am wondering if anybody else have this issue.

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  4 роки тому +1

      I personally haven't noticed this issue on my copy, and can't understand how it could cause a drain since there isn't anything in the lens that requires a high constant drain, i.e. Autofocus or optical stabilisation

    I thought the E-mount system was open source and so available to any lens manufacturer. Which means there is no such thing as reverse engineering. Especially not, as you pointed out, since this is a manual focus lens. Also dealing with IBIS is none of the lenses business.
    So it sounds more like those are simply lame excuses. Obviously they are not interested in any mirrorless lens production yet. Why don't they just say so?

    • @DaveMcKeegan
      @DaveMcKeegan  5 років тому +1

      Irix specifically stated to me that Sony isn't open source as people are led to believe.
      And they were a little sketchy on the exact details regarding the issues they had encountered, but they definitely didn't seem like they weren't interested ... Some of their guys are Sony shooters so doesn't make sense why they wouldn't be

    I wish you had talked more about the focus breathing. Is the image magnified when you focus or does the field of view remain constant? One of my biggest complaints about the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro is that the focus breathing makes focus stacking difficult, even using a rail.
