    REVISIONS:
    - I realized my faux pas re: Elsa wearing gloves after posting this video. Was looking at her dress too analytically via fashion and not enough via the storyline haha!
    - I messed up the math for a few scores 😳. This is what happens when you get a degree in humanities (I'm jk 😇).
Hello, lovely cherubs! I know it's annoying how I'm not looking at the lens! The reason is because I've been recording on my iPhone and couldn't figure out where to look to center my face right. But recently (after the recording of this video), I've acquired a new camera, which will hopefully bring pleasant technological advances for future videos. Thanks for supporting and being patient with this UA-cam debutante!

It's come to my attention (thanks to some beloved people) that I grossly mispronounced "Maori." There is no excuse, I was just stupidly confident that I pronounced the word correctly and I didn't bother to double check. I'm so sorry to any Polynesians who felt hurt by my negligence!

Depends on version. There is a theory there was more than one Mulan - 1. Yue Nu, martial artist (who used Qi) and heroine of the Yue State. Fate = suicide, posthumous goddess. 2. Northern Wei Dynasty (not Mongolian, but a Xianbei Tartar States. The Xianbei was added to the Mongols much, much later) Fate = prostitute. 3. Red Sleeved Maiden, Tang Dynasty. Fate = happy ending and marries a famous General. 4. Other women whose names were lost to history. Fate = Unknown. Then along came the Yuan, Ming , and Qing Dynasties - which combined them into a single personage much like our King Arthur. They combined her into a single person due to Han Chinese nationalism - they did not like being ruled by a foreign dynasty and needed a hero that could kick the asses of the villains of the week.

I always got the vibe that Mulan's family were nobility but that they had limited funds as a result of her father becoming disabled. Therefore they could not afford servants or luxuries that would correspond with their status, which explains why, despite living in such a large home with sprawling manicured gardens and large family temple, Mulan does servants chores and has modest possessions. And, since their only family (aside from Grandma Fa) depicted in the film are the ghosts of their ancestors, Mulan's father appears to be the only living male descendant of the family. Leaving them without any clan backing and no uncles or nephews to provide support (or potentially adopt). Making Mulan the sole inheritor of her clan, which is why her marriage would be such a critical issue to the survival of her family line.

I feel like you can't really rate Rapunzel's dress on historical accuracy because she made it herself without reference or context from the outside world of what's popular. With that in mind I feel like it's meant to look costumey and dreamy while still being functional. This would explain the pink/purple as well as the lace trim and overall shape of the dress.

Rapunzel is wearing a German dirndl. She was treated essentially as a maid, locked in the tower to do chores all day every day. Maids and peasants often wore dirndls since they were work clothes near the time of their invention. While she may not be perfectly historically accurate, she's more so than you give her credit for, especially since Mother Gothel did not want her to know that she was royalty.

I’m going to argue that Rapunzel, Anna, and Moana actually make sense from narrative/story perspective
-Rapunzel quite literally was isolated, made her own clothes, had to clean her Entire Tower By Herself, and only had 5 books (with Gothel as her only human companion for 17.999 years.) So, she’s going to go with what’s comfortable for her to wear and work in, with only Gothel as “design inspiration”, and pick colors that she herself likes. She’s not supposed to be “elegant” or stylish, she’s supposed to be Self-Dresses But Very Isolated. (Also her choice in purple was based around very distant memories of Corona’s Purple And Gold, with Pink being another “favorite color.” And as someone who’s painted? The palette she uses wouldn’t stain her dress since they’re pretty much the same Purples and Pinks, with very few darker or bolder colors.)
Also Gothel does mock her as “sloppy and underdressed” but is also shown to quite literally keep Rapunzel infantalized. So…no nicer fabrics, no “Proper TM” Fashion Socialization. Raps is on her own to make her own fashions
-Anna kinda ran from a ball straight to a mountain and had to buy whatever was left over from the winter season since…she isn’t exactly the type to prepare or think things through, and Winter Hit In Summer. She gets a pass.
-Moana was forbidden to EVER so much as look at a boat. Of Course she’s in “indoor only” clothing-that’s literally all she would’ve had aside from her feathered ceremonial outfit. And she quite literally snuck out a boat-twice. By the end of the film she’s wearing the proper leaves. Maui wears the proper leaves. The Ancestors in her vision wear the proper leaves. So it’s not Negligence For Style, it’s because of characterization (almost everyone in Montonui wears the indoor bark vs leaves to emphasis the NO OCEAN law. Granted the fishermen should’ve narratively been the exception here, but I digress.)

I like Rapunzel’s dress in the sense that it emphasizes her child-like naivety. She doesn’t really know the world and, as a result, her “fairy tale” dress is more traditionally emblematic of that, with the childish outfit (similar to things worn at Renaissance fairs) most girls her age would find silly. But she’s been locked away in a tower, so how would she know that?
Also, I doubt Gothel’s getting her princess-worthy material. I even suspect she’d do the opposite, to conceal Rapunzel’s status while also appeasing the girl’s whims.
We have to consider its for young girls. She’s outgrown the dress, and it looks like every thing a little girl would stick into a dress to wear for herself (or himself, no judgement). But that’s just me.

I agree. Even though she was noble, she didn’t know she was and Mother Gothel wouldn’t have dressed her as one. Stephanye Ann Yeah, some of it is individualized to characters. Like Merida, her sleeves are slashed to show she doesn’t believe in high-class aristocracy and is willing to “expose” her (elbow) undergarments (scandalous!). She rips it at the midpoint of the movie when she shoots arrows. It’s pretty obvious why that was there, for character reasons.

I’ll agree with you on Tiana’s since she had no input on her dress and the rest of her clothes are generally 1920s, especially since the silhouette would have matched something her grandmother would have worn and possibly would still have tucked away so it wouldn’t have been a completely novel idea (her wearing smth from 1850-60s is the equivalent of someone wearing a dress from the 1950s today) and it works with the lily pad thing. However, Elsa created the dress she wears and might as well have sew it so I’d get something that differs a little since she wants to break away from traditional life but this is like someone wearing a bathing suit to a job interview.

amazing! in reference to Mulan's family's status, it's entirely possible that they were upper class and poor! The social structure in China was split up in mostly a consistent fashion for many centuries. It's possible that her family belonged to the nobility, as many members of the nobility lost their wealth but retained their status. This left people in situations somewhat similar to Mulan's, where they retained large amounts of land (depending on their family's structure) but were left in poverty. There are some accounts of noble women selling cloth work and jewelry to help sustain the family.

I think thats also partly because of how 'harems" have been so misrepresented in history and media. In reality they were for the women to be protected and remain modest. But when male colonizers started visiting abroad and were not allowed to visit (for obvious reasons) it became a mentality of "Oh my, what must they be getting up to in there if were not allowed in" and so they started depicting harems in their writings and art of harems being basically brothels. And unfortunately people started taking that as a fact and just kind of continued to roll with that. And so yes Jasmine's look is partially based off modern sensibilities and fashion of the time, but I also feel like is based off bad muslim harem stereotypes.

Tangled is definitely set in Germany, specifically Bavaria - the behind the scenes musical they made from the cruise ships confirm this. The rest of the women we see throughout the film (excluding Gothel and her actual mother) are in dirndls, which were often worn with puffy/loose sleeves. That also explains the lace trim and front lacing, which is typical of a dirndl. Rapunzel's dress obviously isn't a dirndl (though in some concept art she is drawn in a garment clearly inspired by dirndls), but she also made her own clothes and had literally no idea what the fashion trends outside her tower were like. The only woman dressed similarly to Rapunzel in the entire film is her mother, who apparently has only worn the same dress for 18 years (cos it's the same as the one at the start of the movie), even though the bodices are quite different.

Edit: thanks for the analysis/history under this comment guys, I had never heard most of this and all of it makes the choice seem to be done for a better reason than recycling out of carelessness, which im glad about

I've always liked but seeing the other concept art idk why they didn't keep the green color palette with the more 1920s silhouette? It could have even beaded like a lot of dresses were because it's hardly animated for very long lmao

Honestly, considering the way they kept on referring back to the traditional, fairy tale “princess” throughout the story, I think the dress is more of a callback to that than any specific attempt at historical accuracy. It was a very direct visual interpretation of what happened within the story: by kissing Navine she became a “princess” thus breaking the spell. Thus, a very dramatic, stereotypical princess dress is appropriate for comparison’s sake, even if not necessarily for historical reference.
I do wish we had more marketing of flapper Tiana, though. That is a lovely, historical and iconic outfit!

Mulan remains superior, her story, her dress, everything.
Also I'm going to have to mention this, remember how Disney threatened to sue Barbie if they made an adaptation of the sleeping beauty - mostly because of Barbie's association with pink and the fact that Disney sold Aurora in a pink dress despite the fact that she wears the blue dress more in the movie, as Cinderella was being marketed in blue (rather than the silver dress seen in the movie) BECAUSE MONEY, as that is everything Disney cares about. Not like Barbie was going to do anything like the disney movie, as they wanted to adapt the Tchaikovsky ballet to finish their ballet trilogy.
Now where the hypocrisy comes in, Barbie did Rapunzel in 2002. She wore a gorgeous purple gown, with puffy sleeves.
Then Disney did Tangled, and she wears a floppy purple dress with puff sleeves. You're not going to tell me that it was a coincidence, Disney knew exactly what they were doing as they didn't have a purple colour coded princess yet. Very, very hypocritical. People try to tell me Tangled's dress was more accurate when it clearly was not.

@@Adorablepizza146 I am 💯 it's about the dumb brand and how they made Aurora pink despite the pink dress only being in the movie for 30 seconds. That's just insecurity right there. Barbie should have gone through with it, it would have been a pretty ballet like Swan Lake or the Nutcracker. Doesn't even have much to do with Disney's version at all and I believe Barbie's character (which would have been called Rose) would have actually been the main character and not just gone for 70% of the movie. I like Sleeping Beauty but Disney's hypocrisy here is appalling

Okay as a hanfu enthusiast I am _so_ sad how they put the hanfu together... Mulan’s outfit looks horribly cheap and her make-up resembles clown make-up. It’s true they’re technically accurate, but it’s just...so...bad-looking (I wish they went for a more silky look).
Even if they’re playing up how silly she feels and how she doesn’t fit in the outfit, they didn’t have to do hanfu so dirty like that... 😔
Even Taobao hanfu look better than Mulan’s outfit.
They could’ve gone for historically accurate (in a more realistic look-I feel like her matchmaking outfit was way too bright) or even gone for a more xianxia/wuxia vibe since they had fantasy elements in the movie.
If anyone’s interested in how pretty hanfu can actually be, you can check this really awesome blog out: ziseviolet.tumblr.com/

I'm also Norwegian and live in Bergen, and just want to give you props for not bringing up the Bergens bunad and saying that as Arendelle is based on Bergen, she should wear that particular pattern and colour- because it straight up didn't exist until 1936. As someone who grew up in Norway I know how fierce the bunad debate is and how obsessed people are with what we can call a real bunad and what is a festdrakt (translates to formal wear and looks just like a bunad)- and I think you handled it really well by saying folkwear!!!
