Definitely "The Unknown". It all built to this captivating, suspenseful episode that was able to deliver an exceptional and emotional finale in only 11 minutes.
I'm with Abraham on this one, The Unknown is perfection and one of the best episodes in television history. The only episode from any show that beats it for me is A Tale of Two Stans from Gravity Falls, but only barely.
Hard Times at the Huskin' Bee, because the first episode is a great intro to the characters and world, but episode two really shows off how wierd the show is and can be, along with how unconventional it is. The first time you see it you're certain you know how it'll end, especially after the more conventional "action scene" at the climax of the first episode. But episode two has an air of uneasiness the whole way through, and Wirt and Greg are sentenced to "A few hours of manual labor," then are free to leave Pottsfield.
I think the show is a thanksgiving show because Greg and Wirt go into the unknown after Halloween and at the end of the show it’s snowing indicating it’s winter so it makes me think the show takes place in November .
There are some incredible exceptions to the rule - Adult Swim tends to bring them to their weekend line up, and I'm not talking about Rick and Morty. Shows like Primal are a visually gorgeous graphic-novel style of animating, while others like Harley Quinn have superb writing and character development that keeps familiar comic book characters fresh and exciting. I would argue that Steven Universe is another excellent combination of character arc and colorful storytelling. And The Amazing World of Gumball is a hodge-podge of various animation styles all combined in one show. 2D animation may not be a major draw for major films or box office smashes anymore, but there are still studios that use it effectively and beautifully to entertain audiences. As long as there's an audience for it, they'll continue to make shows that use the traditional appearance of hand-drawn characters.

I read that the writers intended for this world to be purgatory - as in Wirt, Greg, and all these other characters are trapped between life and death. Wirt and Greg ended up here because they fell into the river and are almost drowning The beast represents death - in that while stuck in purgatory it depends on Wirt and Greg to leave because they can’t physically get home from here. If they lose hope or despair like the woodsman warned they’ll be taken over by the beast (die) like what almost happened to Wirt. Only when they literally triumph over death and regain hope does Wirt manage to return to our world where he saves Greg
@@laylagardner8728 but even earlier the Beast was actually the good guy who takes the souls over to the afterlife, and was going to help Wirt and Greg return of the world of the living. What an amazing evolution!
Correct. SPOILERS BELOW (just in case) Furthermore, in the 9th episode, the graveyard that all the kids go to is called the Eternal Garden. When Greg and Wirt run from the police officer, they climb the wall and literally go "over the garden wall." Another tidbit from that episode - when Wirt and Greg are watching the other kids talk, right before Greg pretends to be a ghost elephant - one of the tombstones they're hiding behind has "Quincy Endicott" on it.
I just watched this (yeah I'm late, somehow this flew beneath my radar for a long time) and when I was watching the last episodes something suddenly clicked in my head and I Said to my husband: "if it turns out these kids were brutally killed by that train and they've been hopelessly wondering in limbo this whole time... On a more serious note, as a sophomore with a generalized anxiety disorder, your analysis on Wirt and his school life really lifted my spirits about life. Great vid as always ❤
One thing that helped with with having aspergers and still does as an adult (if mid 20s is adult... lol) is just to remember one simple thing. Everyone is human. People are just people. Unless your some kind of absolute maniac, your own experience is usually good enough to make a guess at what is up with other people. For example, at a red light if you feel exposed and like everyone can see you when you try to take a selfie or pick your nose... just think.. are you actively watching the people in the cars around you like a hawk? Probably not. Neither is anyone else. If you do something embarrassing and think everyone is laughing _at_ you, just imagine if someone else did that would you laugh _at them?_ probably not. It's an awkward tension breaking laugh based in empathy and not meant to be hurtful. Chances are if someone farts in class, you understand people fart... it's a human thing to do, you might giggle because *lol toots!* but you aren't laughing *at* someone maliciously... right? It's just a nervous laugh, and a toot was funny, but you aren't thinking "oh that girl is a disgusting animal! No one could love her!" You're more likely thinking "phew, what did she eat? Lol do I seem mean? Am I laughing out loud? Omgosh!" and the thought is gone just as fast and you already moved past it, but long after you forgot about that fart, the person who dealt it is still sweating and anxious. It goes both ways! Just remember, people are just people. Like you. You they make mistakes, they all pick their noses and trip and fall or spit when they talk or have a brain fart and say something stupid. Just remember to put yourself in their shoes, it will help you be less anxious and also help you be better, kinder, and more sympathetic person. I hope that helps, because it really helped me. I had severe anxiety in school and always thought the worst, but it turns out... so is everyone else. If you're having a bad day, chances are the other kids are too and sometimes people are mean by accident and it's easy to let a misunderstanding ruin your day or week! Good luck! :D
@@DanteYewToob Thanks man, I think a big part of it is that it's near impossible to see yourself the way _others_ see you, but you just gotta remember you're human like everyone else
The fact that each episode focuses on a unique group/society to me makes it feel almost like Wirt and Greg are stumbling through the pages of an old story book. This has got to be one of my favourite shows of all time and I hope we see more from Pat McHale in the future!
@Greg Elchert Interestingly, and I'm not sure how I feel about this given what you just said, the first comic depicts their time between some of the episodes
My fiance and I watched this recently at random without any clue of how good it'd be. We just wanted to watch something animated that didn't need that much commitment from us. We binged it and were like "holy shit!". While watching it we predicted the ending (they were in a sort of purgatory, or just taking a look at what lies beyond death) and came to the conclusion that each of the episodes in one way or another symbolized some stage of adult life, and that Wirt's purgatory was about lamenting the loss of his childhood in his pass to adulthood, learning to be responsible for Greg. Stuff like "education" (the school for talking animals), or "figuring out your role in society" (the tavern with the townspeople), or "the legal system" (in the skeleton village where they were sentenced to do community work) or "wealth" (where the guy was so rich he didn't even know the extent of his property), etc etc etc. It's not a clear cut distinction, but we still think we're onto something
The show represents nostalgia for a time you never knew, and once you finish the series it leaves you empty. Like you just realized that you’ve been missing something your entire life and didn’t know it. I think that’s why I love over the garden wall so much, it doesn’t try to explain everything and be cookie cutter. It tells a story of two boys traveling an unknown land, and it doesn’t try to be more than it is. It just is.
Thank you for saying! I mean I love Tom Waits (and honestly, maybe he could've fit into the right character, Heh.) but... Yeah, nobody else could have been in that role than Jack Jones. No offense meant, but I'm not even sure how they could be mistaken for each other.
Over the Garden wall is one of the most worthwhile shows I've ever watched. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to finish the show and I promise you its worth it. Each character is so well designed and dynamic. Honestly it is beautiful to watch and the plot keeps you entranced the whole time. The last episode makes me cry every time which is unexpected since not a lot of shows can do that for me. Oh, and the soundtrack is amazing.
A girl I used to date introduced me to this. I was low- key hoping it would be a tradition of ours to watch it every Halloween but it didn't work out lol
This is perfect timing! I just marathoned the show for Halloween and fell completely in love with the hauntingly beautiful autumn atmosphere and how concise and rich with character/personality the show was. Gorgeous stuff
So funny story, I took acid for the first time and my little brother showed me this. And I was absolutely horrified by the beast. The idea that the show is just a purgatory for Greg and Wirt really freaked me out. But it was such an interesting experience because the acid actually made me feel like I was in the world they were in. I watched this show the night before Halloween and let’s just say Halloween was a little different this year. It felt creepier and I loved it.
I am absolutely in love with this show, from the well developed and interesting characters to the incredible soundtrack. The visuals are just the icing on top of this perfectly baked cake. I'm so glad you covered this show.
when i watched this as a 10 year old i didn’t think much of it. although, when i grew up and started realizing the masterpiece i was watching, i began to adore it as much as a do today. this show has been an important part of me for a while and it’s time i finally say this. Over The Garden Wall is my overall favorite show in the whole world. it’s character development is so thought out and just the way the show looks makes it even better. i’ll never forget the first time i watched the first and second episode, November 3rd. 2014 at 7:00 pm. i miss those times. now i watch it almost everyday, having most lines memorized. still, this miniseries shall stay in my heart forever.
Wirt and Greg represent the balance you need between light-heartedness and responsibility. It's important to let a bit of fiction into your life as well as being realistic and thinking ahead a bit
I cannot believe this. I watched it for the first time literally just now. And before even I managed to wipe my tears off my cheeks, Captain Midnight posts a video about it. Talk about coincidence.
Lately, I’ve been describing it as if Alice in Wonderland had two young brothers as the protagonists going through the woods of Disney’s Snow White, with characters like those from the Frog and Toad series
The power of the unknown is to the reciever, its limitless, just like the mind going around in circles. Over the garden wall is something special for sure.
i watched this show while extremely high at halloween, it was amazing! i kept zoning out and getting distracted and then looking back at it like wtf is going? this is awesome? this is weird? this is beautiful?
This is one my favourite things to watch around Halloween time. It’s the creepiest show I’ve ever seen and oftentimes I can’t stop until I’ve watched the whole things
I know! It's a bit of an annoying, indecisive feeling; It's so good you want more but you know pretty much any way of adding more would ruin it. I just finished binging it this Halloween for the first time :)
I freaking love this series. My friend and I have a tradition of watching this every Halloween. The fact that someone else feels the same way is awesome :)
You really killed it with this video essay. I’m glad to see someone who obviously cares a lot about cinema and creative storytelling give Over the Garden Wall the critical analysis it deserves.
Just finished this and I was sad it was over. They did a great job explaining why it’s called Over The Garden Wall without actually saying it since they jump over a garden wall in the graveyard. Really cool way of showing something without saying it. Overall I thought the characters were very interesting and the Beast essentially representing death was cool since they’re essentially in a coma of some sort while drowning on the brink of death. It’s a good blend of horror and mystique without going over the top
I just watched it and holy shit, if my parents caught me watching something this scary as a kid, they probably would've gotten a hearth attack, lol. Like, some episodes are pretty chill, but the dog from the first episode or the girl posessed by the evil spirit were seriously disturbing.
My favorite episodes are probably Lullaby in Frogland and The Unknown. Lullaby in Frogland first half is comically happy/fun and the second half gets dark/sad. It is paced very well, has good jokes, and a sad bittersweet ending. And of course who can forget Jason Funderburker’s amazing song. The Unknown is a very dark, emotional, and satisfying ending to the series. It’s final moments have this subtle sense of finality. I shed a tear or two in this episode.
6 years on this show is still my favorite animated series ever. I recently rewatched it all and it just made me appreciate it even more as an adult. It’s perfect and makes me so happy
When I first watched this a few years ago, it reminded me of a less colorful and slightly more realistic/ reasonable version of Adventure Time. I loved it.
I think one of my favorite things about this show is episode 9, where we see how in his head Wirt is and how much everyone seems to like him despite that. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much everyone genuinely seemed to want him around except himself
That bit about Over the Garden Wall being a sort of natural extension of the Grimm's Fairy Tales was so on point! That's exactly how I felt when I watched it. Foreboding like a Grimm tale, yet inviting almost like a Winnie the Pooh book (the ones by A.A. Milne, as well as the earlier Disney Winnie the Pooh).
Surprised you didn't mention the music at all. I believe the original soundtrack, with its addictive melodies, deep, sympathetic lyrics, and master-class cast really brought the entire visual and thematic work together to create Over The Garden Wall's sense of nostalgia, wonder, and melancholy.
this show is a gem. i’ve never been more invested in an animated show (excepting these last air bender). the artistry is to die for. the plot is ridiculously disturbing but yet comfortable and pure. the aesthetic is unique and divine. there’s nothing not to love
I watch this every fall season. Such a great show, and I’m glad it’s its own little thing. Kinda Alice in Wonderland meets Dante’s Inferno (?) as these kids descend further into the Unknown to find their way out
I love this show and have rewatch it three times now, and its fantastic everytime, the characters, the music, and the mystery are fined tune to perfection, and i’m glad that it has been remembered and cherished after its end
So I finally watched Over the Garden Wall this weekend, I acutally binged it. I think this is one of the best western mystery cartoons out there. Sometimes, even better than Graviry Falls. While you would more classify it as horror, it's so deep and mysterious. I like fantasy, especially high fantasy, but this was a refreshing breath of fresh air I'll be watching every Halloween season and see everything that I missed the first time. So glad I finally sat down and watched it!!
I first knew of it when it was on Netflix in 2019. I thought it was a new series, which i guess is sort of underlining your point of it proving the test of time. I just rewatched it agian this year and I will proceed so for the next fall seasons. It has become my autumn series
I just finished watching it a bit ago for the first time and I thought it shared elements with Studio Ghibli, The Dragon Prince, and Gravity Falls. The strange, fantastical, soft-world building screamed studio ghibli to me and Wirt, Greg, and the frog reminded me of Callum, Ezran, and Bait. Idk how to explain the Gravity Falls correlation exactly but it's there.
As a kid this show absolutely amazed me, the mystic and mysterious nature of the world and specifically the beast drew me in. Just watched it again a few hours ago and was amazed it’s sooooo good.
Just watched this with my friends for Halloween (third time for me, first time for them) such a great time, and a perfect palette cleanser between horror movies

This Show had an Amazing cast with Elijah Wood, Christopher Lloyd, John Cleese, Tim Curry and Bebe Neuwrithe just to name a few.
Who, who, who, who and who?
@@fatdingo8251 Frodo Baggins, Dr. Emmet Brown, Basil Fawlty, Pennywise the Clown and Morticia Addams
This show literally saved my life and I think I’m not the only one.
You're absolutely right about that.
I adore OTGW, I actually got a collection of friends to join me in my yearly Halloween tradition of re-watching the series.
Lucky you
Awesome!
Glad this show is still getting talked about. Everything from the characters, story, music, art and animation is just perfect.
Wirt and Greg represent the balance you need between light-heartedness and responsibility. It's important to let a bit of fiction into your life as well as being realistic and thinking ahead a bit
Someone finally talked about this perfect show!😭
Yes
I cannot believe this. I watched it for the first time literally just now. And before even I managed to wipe my tears off my cheeks, Captain Midnight posts a video about it. Talk about coincidence.
By the way, I didn't know that it had anything to do with halloween
I watched it for the first time 2 days ago
Lately, I’ve been describing it as if Alice in Wonderland had two young brothers as the protagonists going through the woods of Disney’s Snow White, with characters like those from the Frog and Toad series

Every fall I listen to the Over the Garden Wall soundtrack.. The music is just incredible for a cartoon mini-series
I'm glad you made a video on this. Every fall I watch this series. It's so expertly made and so good.
Over the Garden Wall is very reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno
That's fascinating, thank you
Trey the explainer did a fantastic review on this theory here ua-cam.com/video/MBg8tQvATIA/v-deo.html
More say the divine comedy’s purgatory section instead of its inferno section
@@sullivandmitry1416 in the end of Purgatory there isn't the Beast
I thought that was pretty obvious especially with Beatrice.
This show is so delightful. It makes me feel so warm.
The power of the unknown is to the reciever, its limitless, just like the mind going around in circles. Over the garden wall is something special for sure.
Over The Garden Wall: soft worldbuilding at its finest
Despite only watching the whole show once when it came out, I have a huge amount of nostalgia for Over the Garden Wall, even after 5 years.
i watched this show while extremely high at halloween, it was amazing! i kept zoning out and getting distracted and then looking back at it like wtf is going? this is awesome? this is weird? this is beautiful?
This is one my favourite things to watch around Halloween time. It’s the creepiest show I’ve ever seen and oftentimes I can’t stop until I’ve watched the whole things
I remember being hyped for this when it premiered and it did not disappoint.
Although when I finished watching I wanted more but knew the length of the series was perfect. There was no more to reveal
I know! It's a bit of an annoying, indecisive feeling; It's so good you want more but you know pretty much any way of adding more would ruin it. I just finished binging it this Halloween for the first time :)
Well, there are the comics which do contain quite a bit of lore in them.
We need a spin off with different characters in the same universe
Cartoon Network proves here that they are the most risk-taking when it comes to kids television.
@First name Last name what do you mean? They're risking being murdered by og cartoon fans because of teen titans go and the ben 10 reboot
i don’t know if anyone will read this, but:
the frog is voiced by jack jones, not tom waits
Finally someone's talking about this gem
I freaking love this series. My friend and I have a tradition of watching this every Halloween. The fact that someone else feels the same way is awesome :)
YES PLEASE LET MORE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS SHOW ITS AMAZING AND SO UNDERRATED OH MY GOD
You really killed it with this video essay. I’m glad to see someone who obviously cares a lot about cinema and creative storytelling give Over the Garden Wall the critical analysis it deserves.
This show came out 7 years ago, and I only got around to watching it yesterday! I’m so sad I missed out on watching this when it first came out
PEOPLE STILL LOVE THE SHOW AS MUCH AS ME YOOOO I LOVED THIS VID
Just finished this and I was sad it was over. They did a great job explaining why it’s called Over The Garden Wall without actually saying it since they jump over a garden wall in the graveyard. Really cool way of showing something without saying it. Overall I thought the characters were very interesting and the Beast essentially representing death was cool since they’re essentially in a coma of some sort while drowning on the brink of death. It’s a good blend of horror and mystique without going over the top
*THIS. SHOW. MAKES. ME. CRY. EVERYDAY. TIME. I. RE-WATCH. IT*
this show completely changed the way i view autumn and now its my favorite season
I’ve rewatched Over the Garden Wall every October since it’s come out. 10/10 show
This was the show I would watch as a nine-year-old to get scared.
Exact same lol
I just watched it and holy shit, if my parents caught me watching something this scary as a kid, they probably would've gotten a hearth attack, lol. Like, some episodes are pretty chill, but the dog from the first episode or the girl posessed by the evil spirit were seriously disturbing.
This was one of the few “perfect shows” I think were ever made
My favorite episodes are probably Lullaby in Frogland and The Unknown.
I also love that Sarah is black. You can tell by her hands and neck. It’s cool because it so effortlessly supports interracial relationships.
Thats stupid that it even matters. Your color is not a personality trait
@@bitty_beastly47 representation matters my dude
@@danielthorsteinsson9698 This is odd to me, "interracial" relationships are very common here in Brazil
Dude Over the garden wall just makes me so happy in fall. Listining to these fall halloween nature sounds. Everything is great
as a person living in New England I can say that most forests in fall do indeed look like this
6 years on this show is still my favorite animated series ever. I recently rewatched it all and it just made me appreciate it even more as an adult. It’s perfect and makes me so happy
When I first watched this a few years ago, it reminded me of a less colorful and slightly more realistic/ reasonable version of Adventure Time. I loved it.
This is the only show that as much as I love it, I’m glad there isn’t and won’t be a second series, it feels complete already
OTGW is pure perfection. I have it on DVD and watch it all the time. Sometimes I even listen to the soundtrack to fall asleep! I love it so much.
It does! I watch it every Halloween season!
it’s 2021 now and i can confirm it’s still amazing
Nice editing! I love Tome of the Unknown.
"Can't You See I'm Lonely!"
Charming and adorable little series. Watched it 3 times by now.
Haha 3 times
OTGW content in 2019 that isn’t BEF?
YES PLEASE!
This show needs more attention

It's a Thanksgiving tradition for us! I think it's the all around fall vibes that makes it work so well with either. Wonderful video as always.
Okay but like over the garden wall is perfection all year-round, I've been staning the show since it came out way back when 😭😭
Surprised you didn't mention the music at all. I believe the original soundtrack, with its addictive melodies, deep, sympathetic lyrics, and master-class cast really brought the entire visual and thematic work together to create Over The Garden Wall's sense of nostalgia, wonder, and melancholy.
5:11 Adelaide’s house is the biggest fire hazard I’ve ever seen in my life
this show gives me the same vibes as gravity falls and adventure time but at the same time it’s its own unique thing which i love
It's almost October again. I need to watch this cartoon one more time.
this show is a gem. i’ve never been more invested in an animated show (excepting these last air bender). the artistry is to die for. the plot is ridiculously disturbing but yet comfortable and pure. the aesthetic is unique and divine. there’s nothing not to love
I watch this every fall season. Such a great show, and I’m glad it’s its own little thing. Kinda Alice in Wonderland meets Dante’s Inferno (?) as these kids descend further into the Unknown to find their way out
What "Dante's Inferno (?)" means?
Gosh when you said the creator said he took inspiration from old New England postcards the color pallet made so much sense! I love that so much :(
It's cool to see when people watch this show, for me its much more of a Thanksgiving show I don't know why.
Tristan S For me too!
This show gave my mental health hugs, a blanket, and tea, then sat me next to my fireplace as the cold rain drummed against the windows.
Can't believe it has been 5 years since it premiered
I first knew of it when it was on Netflix in 2019. I thought it was a new series, which i guess is sort of underlining your point of it proving the test of time. I just rewatched it agian this year and I will proceed so for the next fall seasons. It has become my autumn series
I recently watched through it for the first time and thought it was recently made. It truly is timeless!
I actually had someone recommend over the garden wall because of watching gravity falls. I also understand the correlation 😊,
As a kid this show absolutely amazed me, the mystic and mysterious nature of the world and specifically the beast drew me in. Just watched it again a few hours ago and was amazed it’s sooooo good.
*Watching and agreeing that the show is good.*
