This is a clip of the amazing British comedian, actor and atheist Ricky Gervais. In this clip, Gervais is describing the pure basics of atheism. Atheism is just not believing the claim that a god exists. Nothing more, nothing less. So it is the opposite of a belief or a belief system. The only thing that all atheists have in common is that there is something that they don't believe, which is the claim that a god exists. So atheism has got nothing to do with for example evolution or the origin of the universe. Regardless, many christians try to push atheism into narratives regarding evolution and the origin of the universe. - Розваги
As a hindu, I love Ricky's point of view.
Who cares if there is a God or not.... Just be a decent human and the world will be a better place.
Problem is, there are some that do care if there is a god and it is specifically that it's their god, and they use that to control the lives of others. If they kept their bs to themselves, then others wouldn't be affected
As I understand it, even Hindus don't believe in physical Gods. They belive in energies that these 'Gods' are just physical images meant to represent those energies as a way to focus on those energies in guided visualization, meditation and energy work. Which makes far more sense to me.
100% agree. Just be nice. Don't need a god to be a good human. Do it regardless.

All what we call "myths" (greek, nordic, aztec...) and that we find funny or ridiculous nowadays were the accepted and trusted religions of their respective period and places. Same will be with current religions in a few decades or centuries, our descendants will call them myths and they will be regarded as ridiculous. Atheist is just someone ahead of his time.

When you reach the end of your meaningless existence you will change your mind. Everyone does and you're no different.
@liarsdontgotoheaven4281, that's the classic treath made by almost ALL religions! Well, I presume that you are a Christian. If you were born in Pakistan you would probably be a Muslim. If you were born in India you would probably be a Buddhist or a Hindu. If you were born in ancient Greece you would as firmly have believed in the existence of Zeus. If you were born in the time of the Vikings you would have believed in the existence of Thor! It's just a geographical coincidence! And what if you have worshipped the wrong imaginary god and will be punished by the right imaginary god for doing so? Maybe I will be rewarded for not worshipping ANY imaginary god at all and I will be rewarded by the right imaginary god for at least not have worshipped the wrong imaginary god and for having used my brain! There in not a shred of evidence for the existence of ANY god or Allah or whatever name they gave to their non-existing celestial dictator! It's time to grow up and to get a PROPER SCIENTIFIC education, especially about evolution and cosmology, and to leave all that supernatural nonsense behind and to deal with the REAL NATURAL WORLD!!!

I had a conversation with a priest at my grandfathers funeral. Has asked me about my faith and I told him I was an atheist. He replied by telling me that atheist are more moral then religious people. He went on to explain that the religious person follows commandments and fears god and wants to go to heaven. Religion drives their morality. The atheist does the right thing because they believe in doing right from within. Interesting take.
Weird. If there is no god then what the heck is the “right thing” only your perspective of what’s right and moral which is meaningless
@@khabbad They are driven by locality. If they lived in India would they be Christian’s? Atheist are who they are regardless of location.
@@jasoncadier5305 well that doesn’t make any sense either. I dont know if God exists or not but I know if he doesn’t exist then there is no good or bad outside of a social construct which is subjective. There is no free will and life is meaningless. Doing the right thing? What’s that even mean? If I feel the right thing is to murder and rob to perpetuate my family’s success then that’s the right thing to do for me. Probably why I hope there is a God but I don’t know because as I said without god our life is meaningless there is no good or bad there is no life after death and all of our most cherished departed loved ones are gone forever and all of the suffering and pain in this life is for nothing with no vindication or validation. So I hope and I envy those with unwavering faith, I have no doubt it hugely comforting
Mao Tse Tung, Pol Polot, Stalin ... all atheists. I think you might've misunderstood the guy. IF you're a good guy doing moral things from an innate sense of selflessness, rather than percriptively, that's a higher moral law, but that doesn't mean being atheist means you're going to act selflessly more often than non-atheists. Rather studies show the opposite. Deists and Theists give charity more often on average than the average atheist, and maybe it shouldn't be accounted to morality... but I don't know their true motives, can you? If so you must be God, and if God, then not an atheist.
Do the right thing on within is exactly what it means to follow god. God is the source, the energy, Everything in and outside you. Religion is a Concept which points towards god but is not God by itself.

If you say you know for sure there is no higher power then that is also a belief founded on nothing.
@@FamiliarAnomaly well it is founded on the absence of a higher power.
@@FamiliarAnomaly Once again missing the point. Atheism isn't "There is no higher power" atheism is "I don't accept claims of knowledge of a higher power because they lack sufficient evidence to be believed"
@@FamiliarAnomaly exactly what @ex7ermin874 said.
The sad thing is, many theists know full-well that atheism isn't a belief that no gods exist, but rather a lack of belief that gods do exist due to a lack of evidence. It's been explained to them countless times, yet they continue to insist atheism is a belief system. I've seen this explained to theists in one thread and then seen them in another thread at a later date making the same argument.
So why the intellectual dishonesty? It's simple: because choosing to reserve belief in something until there's evidence showing it to be true, and in the meantime admitting that it's something we just don't know, is a sensible, logical position to have. While believing in something for which there's no evidence, based on faith alone, simply because you've been told your entire life to believe it, is a completely illogical position to have.
Insisting that atheism is as much a belief system as theism is an attempt to even the playing field, so to speak. If theists were to acknowledge that atheism is nothing more than a _lack_ of belief, then that would leave the theist bearing the burden of proof, which puts them at a disadvantage, particularly in a debate.
@@FamiliarAnomaly your belief in a higher power is founded on an idea of a higher power. In other words, there is no higher power (it cannot be universally proven, seen, experienced, etc.), but it DOES exist. It was created out of nothing, has its own discourse and has captivated billions of people while the rest of us are scratching our heads wondering why on Earth you need such convoluted and bizarre stories to make sense of the world. You could easily make your own, but then you'd lose power in numbers. Religion is business and you are its asset, its capital. There's nothing noble in being religious.

Pointing out the lack of solid logical arguments proving the existence of anthropomorphized monotheistic projections is insufficient basis for such a stance. Polytheism is diffuse and inchoate. Every polytheistic impulse does not involve an anthropomorphized sentient entity or entities. Those who declare themselves decidedly "spiritual rather than religious" may reject established recognized religions, but not all religious impulses are organized or mainstream. Self worship is a church with a congregation of one. Polytheism is a big tent that includes the light of day and the dark and murky, deified rationality, animalistic abandon, materialism, consumerism, pantheism, bread and circuses, various fetishes and obsessions, abstract or literal nature pedestalization, whether it's pan, gaia, pets, or theoretical adherence. Polytheistic impulse include obsession with celebrity, money, fashion, the wind, the stars, the trees, the sea, or something Captain Kirk said, the latest viral trend, or objects of desire, real or synthetic. Much like if you wrestle with a pig, win or lose you still get "muddy"; Vociferous advocates of their own "atheism" exhibit a religious impulse that merely frames the, however subtle and benign, elements of their abstract modern versions of non anthropomorphized polytheism. Long or short you're still invested in the market. Even those on the sidelines are intrinsically "in the game" by virtue of their faith in the value of the cash the hold. An analogy to help understand is hobbies. If you say you are a stamp collector and I say I am not… it wouldn’t make sense for you to say “You do have a hobby… it’s non-stamp-collecting”. That’s the equivalent of what you do when you say to an atheist “You do have a belief… it’s not believing in any gods”.

Ricky is right 100%.
I don't like Ricky Gervais, but he is on point here. It really is the simplest way you can break down what atheism is and why it is not so radical. It is not the conviction that there are no gods, it is the lack of belief in any.
And really, there isn't anything more than that.
The problem is people attribute more to atheism like evolution, big bang theory and humanism, but none of those things are atheism, the first two are science and the latter is an ethical philosophy that's popular among atheists that is atheistic in nature. And atheists /typically/ turns to science, but so do many religious people.
But atheism is just the opposite of theism and being a "theist" just means you believe in one or more gods, it doesn't say anything else about you, because there are other labels you build on top of that, Christianity is theistic, but then so is Hinduism, so if a Hindu says they're a theist it doesn't mean they believe in the God of the bible.
The same standard applies to atheism. For example, "atheistic Buddhism" is a real thing, because the teachings of Buddhism are not contingent on the existence of any deities and it is possible to be a Buddhist without that belief & those people exist.
Ricky always confuses agnostic with atheist. Atheism, by its very definition, is a belief system. He always tries to redefine it. That isn't how language works.
Atheism, by definition, is the LACK of belief.
Agnosticism means you don't KNOW. Atheism means you don't BELIEVE.
Agnosticism and atheism aren't mutually exclusive.
You're the one who's confused.
Saying atheism is a belief or religion is like saying not smoking is a habit or being bald is a hairstyle
And yet there are atheists obsessed with being atheist and can't stop talking about it.
Smoking is a habit yeah good example, but sometimes bald is a hairstyle, some men that dont suffer from baldness choose to be bald because they like the way it looks, and if we're on a video game and we're choosing a hair style, isn't bald an option amongst hair styles? ;)

Am I basically a bachelor because I'm only married to one women, and I'm not married to them all? Am I basically innocent because I've only murdered one more person than you have?
It's clever sounding, but that's it. Nothing follows from the conclusion.
@@SeraphsWitnesssounds like you don't understand what he said. Basically f*ck religion.
@@SeraphsWitness Rejecting a claim is never "proving" anything. You have a complete lack of understanding of the basics of Logic.
Then tell me, what is the point of saying this? It's not merely a "rejection of a claim". This rhetorical statement is meant to say something meaningful in favor of atheism and against theism.
I'm pointing out that it doesn't actually DO anything in favor of atheism or even against theism. It's simply empty rhetorical flourish.
So tell me, what do you think is the point of this statement, if not to make a rhetorical point about atheism?@@brianmi40
Atheists want Gods name and address. They want to actually see an all powerful creator, who may not even be in a physical form. The more relevant question would be, how can there NOT be a God? We see evidence of creation all around us. Did that happen by itself? Obviously not, because NOTHING happens by itself. Issac Newton believed in God, and if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me!
You don't get to call it a creation until you demonstrate it has in fact been created. When we examine the world around us and the universe, we find no evidence for any creation.
'I don't understand, therefore it was magic' is not that evidence.
Newton also believed in alchemy so I guess you think alchemy is legitimate as well.
@@JustMe-wo8lg @denmachan is right. When an artist paints a painting, nobody can stop you from calling it magic but most people wouldn't agree with you. Suggesting that alchemy would have to be legitimate because creation is, is just fallacious of you.
@-ChrisD no dummy, we have loads of evidence that paintings are made by painters. No such evidence for nature/ the universe. In fact, every single thing thus far, for the things we have explanations for in nature, can be explained without an intelligence behind it.
I understand that reading is very hard for you, but I never suggested that alchemy is legitimate because creation is or that alchemy is legitimate at all.
The argument was that if it is good enough for Newton, it is good enough to believe for the OP, and that is fallacious, as I demonstrated by the alchemy example. Newton thought that alchemy was real, and that is clearly nonsense. So, just because a great scientist of the past believed it, doesn't make it true.
@@JustMe-wo8lg You reject truth so you yourself cannot prove nor do you have evidence that paintings are made by painters. You can't even prove the universe exists or that this isn't all a dream. Yet, you choose to be hateful towards those that believe in God and all that is good.
@@-ChrisD I don't reject the truth. We have loads of evidence that painting have painters. In fact ALL the evidence we have indicates that fact,
"Proof" is reserved for the few things we can be absolutely sure about, like in mathematics. We have evidence for the universe, direct experience being an obvious one.
If this is all all dream or I'm in the matrix or whatever other BS you want to come up with, is IRRELEVANT as it would still be the reality I live.in.
I am not hateful towards those who believe. In fact, many of my friends believe. What I can't stand though is people who continuously lie and post the same shit on repeat and that is you.
