Good review. Most comments are akin to the ones saying the BMW GS is better off-road than (Insert any other adventure bike). Most GS's never go near the dirt roads. And most sport bikes never go much further than 60 miles before a coffee stop, or 120 before running out of fuel. That's about the same as the Zero, so just find a coffee stop near a charging point ;-) Zero have come from nothing to producing a viable and fun to ride motorcycle in a very short time, well done.

Have a look at Goodenough's solid state battery tech. Now that's more interesting. But even then, it'll probably be 2030 at the very least before we see them in EVs.

@T38 Talon the problem is that capacitors don't store much electricity. Give me a SR/S with 24kWh of usable storage and that's a viable replacement bike for a lot of people - >100 miles of hooning about or >200 miles of riding at a sensible pace

Spot on review. Ive run an SRF and yea range 75-80 miles range giving it the beans. Was £19K, bought it knowing its for squirting about on, perfect throttle control, regen and different. I like Zero quality this is my second I also had a DSR. I run a few other ICE bikes so swap about a bit, GSXR 1000 K5, Raptor 1000, the SRF can hold its own on fast A roads and will disappear on B roads. I know I am asking two years later, but I am debating between an SR/S and a DSR. Big different in cost between the two, and I am wondering if the DSR captures a large part of what the SR/S or F would have to offer but for 6K less. I haven't seen anyone who owned both, so I figured I would ask you.

As the owner of petrol cruiser, gas and electric scooter and electric bicycle I asked myself a few questions about specifically this bike.
    1. Where is it needed? - A few select places like Monaco and other luxury resorts or places common people rarely go with strict vehicle restrictions.
    2. Is it comfortable to use? - No, the sport seating is terrible for anything below 200km\h - it was designed specifically for this purpose alone. Heck, a good deal of power cruisers are very comfortable at 200 km+. I personally vouch for Suzuki Intruder 1800 at 274km and Harley V-Rod at 224km.
    3. Is it convenient? - NO, the size is too large compared to much smaller, more practical and cheaper electric bicycles or scooters. Heck, electric skateboards can go 70-80 km\h nowadays at a reasonable price. Electric bicycle packs more convenience and comfort and you can drag it inside apartment, workplace, train etc.
    4. Is it cheaper to own\use long term? - Look at all those penny-pinchers riding $20 000+ bikes, roads are packed like sardines with them. Sarcasm. Economy bike is below $3000 and that's stretching it to brand new ones. E-bikes do have mechanical failures, expensive ones at that. So maintenance wont be cheap. Bike is rare and small scale so expect to haver trouble in fixing some stuff. And it is rare to find a bike that has above 30-40k mileage - people just don't use them so much to reach that figure.
    5. Is it premium\luxury? - Absolute not. Want a premium e-bike - go E-Tron, Harley Electric or West Coast Customs electric. This thing has nothing of note that a myriad of Chinese electrics don't have. Heck, it looks like it copied their designs and fells more like a rip-off.

I think I would really enjoy the quiet purity of an electric bike. Nothing but you and a linear connection to the throttle. I see that as a segment in its own right. Dual sports can go off road, supersports can go to the track, and electrics can take you to this quiet serenity where you can hear the birds chirping or the babble of a nearby stream or waterfall. Is that worth the investment? It all depends on who you ask. I couldn't afford it even if I wanted it more than anything, but I do see the appeal.

Regular 3-pin outlet charging will take closer to 10 hrs from empty. You quoted the charge time of a Level 2 charger with the standard on board 3KW charger. Zero does not give the charge time for a Level 1 charge for SR/S and SR/F.

    • @EryrDubstep
      @EryrDubstep 4 роки тому +1

Let's do a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation. Nominal capacity is 12.6 kWh. Charging speed is tapered at 95%, so let's call it 12 kWh nominal capacity. Assuming 85% charging efficiency, we need to draw 14.1 kWh from the wall. A standard UK household plug should give 16 A at 240 V, so about 3.8 kW. The onboard charger for the standard SR/S is 3 kW, so it should take 4.7 hours to charge from empty. The premium model has a 6 kW onboard charger, so should take 3.7 hours to charge from empty.

I rode Victory's version (they bought out Brammo) about five years ago and it felt great, loads of fun. For someone who commutes within its range or can plug in at work it might be fine. Charging stations are proliferating and apps help folks find them.

Plus it'll make the launch quicker. That until the they find out how to create denser battery technology.

About the only thing they can do to lower the price is sell more bikes and move out of California - neither of which affects the component pricing.

A worthwhile review, but the obvious standard to compare it with is the Energica Eva EsseEsse9 or 9+. The + especially has more range, and seems a bit of a heavier proposition though, this looks flickable by comparison. In the still-present austere world outside, I just wonder as many do, about the brand new sticker price. I only bought one motorcycle new, when I was a teenager, and I struggle to see how I’d ever be able to buy one of these, if limited numbers are willing to buy new. My guess, and it’s only an opinion, is the electric motorcycles will come down, and tax will slowly hammer ICE vehicles. The case for runaround electric bikes or even e-bikes like bicycles, is cast-iron.
Once we get to serious pricing and performance, the price shoots up to the sort of range you can buy into decent family EVs with. If you have twenty grand, and you have the choice, you’d probably opt to swap out the family wagon to an EV first of all? That’s where the cost savings are, which offsets the purchase price premium. Fuel costs of maybe £1000 vs energy of likely £200 annually, makes sense of the capital cost issue, and of course, the lack of maintenance etc. Primarily a leisure vehicle, a £20k electric motorcycle is a formidable proposition. Chinese budget electric motorcycles using hub motors of up to 7kW, can be had for less than four grand UKP? At the lightweight end, there’s e-bikes and so forth. I can see why development has basically stalled, this is a leisure product born into post-credit crunch austerity, then comes along the ‘C’ word, which will further hinder any extravagant spending as uncertainty ramps up.
It’s a nice-looking bike, but my own inevitable comparison is with my £1000 value of Japanese mid-range multi, which gives 65mpg and the worst loss I could suffer is the entire thing goes up in flames and I forget to insure it. I suspect you buy this Zero bike, and if you tried to sell it the very next day, you might get a loss of ten grand. It’s just such a nice bike and hard to see mass sales. Lastly, I echo others, who ask if it even has engine braking/regen levels, because the range makes me think maybe that sort of technology has moved on apace in cars now, and is primitive in this bike.
My own view is, hub motors front and rear, is how motorcycles should go, and that permits heavy regen and braking at the front, which most riders expect, and would enhance range markedly. Rear regen on a bike, seems a lousy prospect, liable to be inefficient and just wear tyres or be prone to skidding at the rear? I know for example, e-bikes of the bicycle variety, are often excused from regen and the reasons given I never find convincing, suspect it is cost. I hope they can keep going, but the present sales environment is as tough as I could ever imagine. Any sales person is going to wish to press the fast-forward button to around 2023 I imagine.

I don't think I'm getting enough for my money in comparison to my Leaf. I know how fast the acceleration can be. I call the accelerator pedal in my Leaf the 'Happy Pedal'. The prices will drop and petrol powered vehicles are old technology. Just about everyone who rides one of these loves it.

Interstate riding or just riding Through Mountain twisties for the day without a recharge for 20k or less then i’m game. or even a hybrid that has a small gas, natural gas or propane generator onboard would be great for those rides when your literally in the middle of nowhere.

My fear of EV Bikes are that it's all fun and games until the battery is toast and returns 20 miles of range before they fry and then costs half the cost of your Ebike new to replace - and that a 2014 model battery is already obsolete and irreplacable - forcing you to buy the new zero... It will be an issue till they find better batteries or more density for the lithium ones. Cars can brute force it with 300-500Kg of batteries. People keep saying the battery technology is improving all the time but here we are ten years on and still only a realistic 100 mile range. That would be okay ish if you could quickly swap batteries over at a filling station and be on your way again. Or if you just live in an urban environment and use the bike for commuting. The way i see it,everything is a poor compromise with electric. The fast chargers draw the power of around 10 to 15 electric showers running at once. And that's just charging one car/bike out of the millions that exist. I really don't think Boris has thought everything through properly. However if he has, i need to buy shares in electric companies sharpish!

Like all new tech, there will be a progression. First electric bike owners will be short distance commuters and dirt bikers. Also maybe professional racers since they're on a track and can just swap batteries on the go. We might start seeing pit stop maneuvers on bike tracks.
electric bikes wont be mainstream until they can get the distance up. People complain about cost and charge time, but it's really the distance that's the main issue. If these bikes got 500+ miles with same charge time and cost, no one would be complaining.
Also, people really undervalue the long term maintenance $$$ savings an electric bike will save you. The fact that you only need to replace tires/brakes and NOTHING ELSE? That's insane long term savings. How much have you spent on your standard engine over the years?

This bike will be a contender when it has CCS AND can Level 2 charge at 6 or 12 kW. The Energica is a race bike, so they will probably never make a bike built exclusively for daily use. Meanwhile Zero is all about making the most practical bike, so they will eventually have ~25-30kW+ of CCS capability plus 6-12kW level 2 chargers on board with a 150 mile highway range at 70mph. That's when Zero will regain the title as "best electric bike" and when electric bikes surpass gas bikes in all areas.
