I'd absolutely LOVE an electric bike. They just need to get more range to make it feasible to me, current EV bike ranges just won't cut it for true touring.
Same opinion. I love electric vehicles, but unfortunately, I do travel few times a year on my bike, covering sometimes more than 700-800km a day...

@@VegitoBlackityBlack That’s what pisses me off is the science is there it’s just big oil holding electric vehicles back because if you came out with a bike or car that could pretty much stay charged all the time then it would destroy the oil industry.
This reminds me of the second generation cell phones 2G, expensive and limited. The question is what will 4G and 5G electric motorcycles look like and what technology innovations are required to get there. Yamaha R&D seems to be dropping hints of an advanced electric motor and software to better utilize battery capacity but a major innovation is necessary to make these practical.
Yamaha will run on 500cc water pumped engine, they promised it for 2025...yep just water not hydrogen
They're already practical, just not for carefree touring. Nothing beats these for commuting.
I just finished a 12,000+ mile journey on my 2020 SR/S and found that it is a very capable tourer. I did 45+ days doing 300-400 miles a day over some very rough country, and hot wet weather. Zero built this to bike to take a beating, and keep on rolling.
Got Zero on my radar for quite some time now. Would love to own such a beauty. I'm not worried not liking the riding experience, it really is the range and the possible lack of charging station infrastracture that does, tho. And of course the price of the ride.

yep.. electric motorcycles aren't quite as usable as gas motos for touring yet.. hope e motorcycles steps up in the future and also we have both gas and electric bikes together for atleast coming 20 -30 years..

I'm seriously considering this bike. Okay, not as an only bike, at present I have 3, but as an additional one. As for range, my Xv950 starts to flash the low fuel light at 120 miles so this isn't that different, you just need to be a bit thoughtful about topping up. Yes I'd tour on the Zero. Maybe its an age thing (65) but I don't want to ride for 300 miles without stopping. 70 to 100 miles then coffee and cake is about right in my opinion. I wish Zero every success with this and their other motorcycles.
I bought this actual bike, ex demo and am loving it for the same reasons you stated. It's a different mindset. ☺

Go to Alibaba.com and order one and you can modify it to do the same thing for 1/4 the price. Just look up electric motorcycle. I would go for 14kw motor hub+ I have a 20kw or 38kw peak motor hub on mine and giving me top speed of 180kph and 0-100kph in 4 seconds. On a 120ah lithium battery.

Thanks for the review. I'm loving my SR/F Premium. Once you get used to the different charging stations and companies things become a lot easier. There are so many chargers even here in the South West, UK. You can curve around all the tight twisties and awesome coast roads for a couple of hours. Maybe clock up 70-80 miles. Stop for lunch for an hour or two while the bike is on charge and repeat in the opposite direction back home with around 30 - 40 miles of range spare. It's doesn't like motorways though as there isn't much chance for it to regenerate.
SRF is definitely the bike that sold me on elec. Enjoy! Sounds like you have the right roads for it

Totally loving my SRS! :-) I have the 12kw charger fitted which when factoring in breakfast and lunch works brilliantly for chilled out distance riding IMO.

It's a big initial cost but factor in the fun, low maintenance and fuel savings during ownership, it's getting very compelling. This model is my favourite that I'd actually buy but still love that EE special edition 'army spec' off roader, that thing looked bad ass.

When fast charging comes as stock (not extra for it)! Charging is at 30 min! range is a bit better and the price is 40% lower. I'm in! Until then! Petrol it is.

Just like all technology (including combustion engines), improvements will always come, maybe 5 years or maybe 20. Whether you want to jump on it early or not is up to you. I’m in it for the environment.

Andrej Bozho I’ll be going on my first longer tour next month, but on daily rides I’ve been doing I manage around 250km a charge (avoiding motorways, max speed 80-90kmh). If I throw in a leisurely lunch to recharge I see no reason not to manage 400+ km per day - comparable to what I do on my ICE bike. Of course, it’s nothing compared to what my 26 year old son and his friends do on their sport bikes, clocking up as many a 1,000km a day riding like banshees on the motorway, but that kind of touring doesn’t interest me.
We have a lot of mountain passes around here and I find them to be range neutral. Riding up in custom and down in eco means my range after the pass is still what it was before going up, which is nice.
It looks like a cheep chinese copy of a BMW. I can actually see the BMW badge on the side. I bet it has no USB port as usual so you can't charge you phone. Well done Zero.
Nice review. Some small mistakes like the 13% range increase vs srf is really only when you're riding it fully tucked in after the screen vs riding upright on an srf... Aka marketing. I have an srf since 08/2019 myself and absolutely love it. Despite the issues it had in rain (for now fixed) and some general bad service and support experiences with zero and some of their dealers over here in Brugge :-). Due to covid lockdowns and that error I only did 13.000 km so far but I hope to be back on the road soon.
Considering the simplicity and minimum parts required in the manufacturing of these bikes, the biggest negative is the COST.
I've ridden an SR/F from English Electric and absolutely loved it. I have had an electric car for the last three years to and am used to planning and charging. When it came to ordering a new bike I've gone for a BMW GS as I want one bike that could do anything and unfortunately a Zero can't. If I could afford a second new bike it would be a Zero, no question. Maybe in a few years when range and infrastructure have improved.
Custom exhaust notes can be given to these bikes. Hi from India. Earlier this year Revoltmotors released a bike here that gave 4 types of exhaust notes that can be changed on the app, removable batteries, geo fencing option as a theft deterrent.
Electrick bikes definetly can come with a bucketload of features...as much as we can think of i guess.

I do lots of touring but this just doesn’t have the range yet. I’d want 200 to 250 miles of range and quick charge in 30 to 40 minutes so a bit to go yet. Although I think they will be the future

Well done video and informative. When I test rode a Zero, I found it to be somewhat top heavy, but I suppose I could get used to it. It's a very nice looking bike, but has limited uses because of range limitations. I think a 30 kw battery would be ideal, but it would have to weigh less than the 14.4 kw. With the way things are going, it might take 2-4 years for that to happen. It's still more expensive than the average ICE bike, but that will also come down with time and competition. I would not be surprised to see Tesla offer one in the next 3 years;.
When electric bikes hit 150/200 miles range at motorway speed then I would consider, otherwise still too early need better battery technology I think?
Love the color but hate the hassle of charging, but I could use it around town where I do most of my riding. It's a gorgeous design, reminding me of some Italian bikes. Costs will come down and range will go up. Maybe next year....

I commute daily on my Versys 650, 50 miles round trip. Once I can afford a second bike, I will be looking at the Zero's. I'll probably keep the Versys for longer rides.
Great review, Bob! I eagerly await an electric tourer with actual touring range. This looks good, and sounds like it’s quite a rush to ride, but the range is nowhere near enough... yet. Hey, I noticed at the end that the rear brake pedal is mounted with the pivot at the front! That’s pretty wacky! Any ideas on why they went with that choice?
After watching the latest long way down I would say no. It’s more like the ‘long way for a power socket’. I’d rather focus on the scenery. The adventure. The excitement and the joy of never knowing what might be around the corner. Not where I’m going to get a recharge and how long it will take.

of a job and it's coming rapidly.
They will also create a lot of jobs and be better for the environment. I understand you love internal combustion engine's but they are probably going to disappear mostly in the next 20 years
yep and these EV technology also won't last forever.. it will also change to some other technology at some point...because just as now ICE vehicles are causing problems, eventually EV technology will reach it's limit.. change is inevitable.. I love driving/riding more than anything else in a vehicle..I just hope these changes don't affect that negatively.. 😌
With stage 2 charging you possibly can, I would say if you kept it as a back road tourer with some hour brakes, sure you can. One just has to adjust their riding style.

I still Zero bikes as one of my day jobs. They are awesome motorcycles. When I can afford one, I would surely buy one. Right now I could just afford an MT09.

Having just purchased a Hyundai Ioniq I would definitely consider purchasing an electric motorcycle. Unfortunately Zero do not have a dealership in NZ, and Evoke are based in the north island. I'm looking forward to riding the SuperSoco TC Max that work have ordered 6 of to replace a fleet of Honda PCX150s, but it seems that it's going to be a while before I can make the shift to going electric myself. Hopefully by then they will have increased range. The charger network in NZ is quite good.
I would love one of these and would be willing to accept the challenges of charging. I don’t have the budget to switch, but to all the people who always say these are too expensive I think you have to factor in at least five years of riding with virtually no fuel or maintenance costs. That’s a few thousand Euros at least, which makes the cost of the bike much more equivalent to similar petrol bikes in the longer term. But of course, battery tech will improve and prices will creep down over time.
I love the idea and for me Zero are doing some great things. If the real world range at 60-70mph was a little more 120-140 miles It would be a much more compelling proposition. I rarely ride for longer than 2 hours without taking a break. The other thing is the charging infrastructure. If there are enough fast chargers so I can get 90% charge in 45 minutes and the navigation technology on the bike helps me plan a route then great. These are the barriers to entry for me. So in summary we are nearly there and I'd same the same with an electric car. Once I can realistically get 220-250 miles of real world driving on a charge (3.5 hours behind the wheel) I'd consider it. The New Renault Zoe is nearly there as an affordable car in this space. I think once the technology removed these barriers electric powered vehicles will boom in popularity and costs will come down as a result of being able to mass produce.
right now I'm looking at E Motorcycles. I'm going to be a new rider probably by year's end but I don't want a Gas Motorcycle (Not a big fan of the noise) also I have my car for Gas power/longer trip. This one is certainly on my list.
So a ‘touring’ bike that’s about the same cost, and weight of a GS Adventure. Not a problem. But imagine if that GS Adventure that could only do 90 miles at 70mph and took between 45 minutes and an hour to fill with petrol, and could only be filled at specific filling stations, provided they weren’t damaged or someone else wasn’t using them. Quite rightly, no-one would buy it. It’s a nice idea, but we are a very, very long way off it being a realistic option.
The fairing, looks very worthwhile if as you say it makes the range 13% longer at motorway speeds.
I wonder if it's even more aerodynamic with the panniers removed.
I guess get into the sports bike position, not for speed, but for range. Maybe that's why the seat is low, get the head of the rider down lower, more aerodynamic !
Hi I have zero dsr with fast longest trip I have made is 90 miles and charged over night before my return trip. I have never used the fast charge port before the regeneration works so well in town. I have several other bikes Yamaha tracer 900cc and suzuki gsr 700cc, three very different rides I definitely enjoy my zero as much as my other 2 bikes but if you plan on doing a lot of touring with electric bike the only problem is birds of a feather, touring on electric and petrol in groups would be a bike difficult.
Sure it’s good for England but when you say touring I envision 500-1000 miles 😍 like in the states here. Still the srs is a dream bike for me
I love to tour. My Trophy is good for 400km plus. I really like the look of this bike, it would probably work for me if the US border was open. Having said that, hotels are sometimes a pain, charging stations would be just another headache, as I like to deviate from planned rides.
I bet you don't do 400 km without taking a break?! Many hotels have charging stations already. And if not, you can use any normal plug and it will be charged overnight.
Cornee Bosmans most times I do take breaks. Sometimes my break is getting gas, especially when doing an iron butt or some other endurance ride.

Would have liked to see more about the capacity of said luggage, also I missed the price and max range. Nah I appreciate the feedback! Noted for next time... and the jeans are Pando Karl Devil 9s which do indeed ship with knee and hip armour. Boots are Icon Elsinore 1000 but I think they discontinued them.

@@annekecornee Yes, you'd need to pull over , run the generator , charge the battery a bit , and hopefully make it to a much faster charger.
Otherwise there's always calling out your breakdown service to carry you there .
Better still stick with a petrol bike with longer range .

Yeah! the infrastructure is the biggest issue, I find. I have been driving and riding electric vehicles for almost 5 years now. Currently, I have this bike.
Getting the charging stations is one thing, has the station broken down in some way is the next and as electric vehicles become more popular how long do you need to wait for the charger.
It's not like these things get topped up in 10 minutes even after you have persuaded them to actually start to charge.

If you have the money this is a good second bike. The first of course being a petrol bike. As for touring I say no. I personally don't like the constraints of the electric range and charging points. Again I think time will fix these issues. For now gas or petrol all the way. Wonderful review as always. The best.
Electric or not.... it’s not a tourer. It’s a short distance, fun bike with 3 boxes, so you can stop at the supermarket for groceries or pack some clothes for a short weekend trip to not too far from home. A tourer is a Gold-wing or a Street Glide.... something you can use to live on the road for days. This is like adding a box on the roof of a Camaro and say it’s a family car.
That said.... I like the thing as a commuter or even as a fun thing for the twisties on Saturdays.
Does it come with emergency solar panels and wind generator ?
Fantastic bike but with the same problems. Too little range, too much money. Shame, but I'll be sticking with my old Yam for quite a while yet 😁

No for touring. When i travel i go like 350 or 400km a day. Sometime without any rest , it will slow me down because i have to recharge it midway

Maybe zero should give some guaranteed future part ex value to give some early adopters recognition for their investment in the future of the brand. Soften the blow for ppl holding off waiting for prices to drop

They should make a proper sports bike. Limited range doesn't matter so much on a sports bike, so ideal for electric.

Good bike, but too much downtime and planning for my style... Be a great commuter for me if there was a charger at work. 50 miles one way, mostly uphill and blasting up mountains is not gonna get me home unless I coast. I don't ride bikes to coast...
This motorcycle does not need dual discs in the front. no motorcycle under 600 pounds needs a second disc in the front, here’s why
A disk is both a fly wheel, and a gyroscope. Flywheels have to be accelerated that takes energy, flywheels like to keep going when they are going, and they don’t like to be Accelerated or decelerated.
They are also gyroscopes. Did you ever hold a gyroscope and try to move it. A single disc is bad enough, but a second disc makes the motorcycle more difficult to get it to change directions.
A disk with its accompanying hardware/caliper/brake pads/brake hoses have weight. That weight is a burden to the suspension. They actually use titanium Lugnuts on Porsche automobiles to lower the unsprung weight which is the weight your suspension has to contend with.
disc brakes also have inherent brake drag..
all those second disc associated parts, have a cost and energy loss, performance loss, and weight, and in dollars. A lightweight motorcycle like this practically doesn’t even need a disc brake. Believe me one is enough. I have experienced the Impact adding a second disc has on a motorcycle when I roadraced for 8 years,In which I want six road racing championships, 2 National road racing championship titles..I added a second disk to my road racer. I will compress all of the negative things that happened in to a couple sentences. The bike did not want to rotate left right in S turns as quickly as it did with the single disc.. that second disc was an additional gyroscope that do not like to change directions....I lost acceleration. They were competitors that I was dead even with an acceleration, they now had about three or 4 miles an hour/walking speed/more acceleration then I had with the second disc...That second flywheel had to be accelerated.
I leaned over and bumpy corners, the bike would wander off track because the suspension could not recover quickly between ripples, because it was too busy with the additional load which slowed down the suspension recovery time between bumps.. when my suspension was already compressed from hitting the first pump, and then I would hit a second bump before the suspension had recovered, the front end would shatter and the bike would drift off the line. The bottom line is, the second disc severely heard acceleration, chassis rotation, and suspension compliance..
If I get a zero and it has two discs in the front, one of them is coming off the first day. They don’t put two discs on each wheel of your car. Nobody needs 450 hp front brake on a 300 pound vehicle
It sounds like you really enjoyed that instant torque, but I wonder to what extent the anxiety about needing to keep track of recharge stations spoils the enjoyment (particularly on less familiar routes)? As someone who worries about the environmental impact of my biking, I'm very interested in electric bikes, but it feels like we're at least another 2-3 years away from achieving equivalency with the petrol engine in terms of development of the power unit, and availability of 'refueling'.
Big drawback of charging for me is that if someone is using the charger, you've got to wait. Or ride to another charger and hope you get there and that nobody is using that one. But hopefully more and more charging stations are popping up all the time and it will become less and less of a problem.

There are more charging stations than petrol stations. See a supermarket? Good chance they have chargers. See a restaurant? Many have chargers.... Many good apps (even Google Maps) to find them. You can filter on availability. Having to wait is an exception.

It is a lovely looking bike. But, On every photo and vid it looks as if the fairing is only a cosmetic thing. Legs, feet, arms, hands, head, all fully exposed in the wind and not behind the fairing at all.

@@motobob Great, I’d love to know your thoughts on them. I have a great deal available to me on an SR/F with free charge tank. But I do like the look of the SR/S and would be particularly interested in how they compare for comfort, including for a pillion.
When the range extends up to 200mls and the charging time is an hour or less, I would probably switch to electric bikes. . . . when the prices are about similar.

Electric bikes are to save fossil fuels but if you calculate that the power station uses fossil fuels to make power and the national grid operates on a 66% loss across the network add that to everyone accelarating like a bunch of drag strip riders using precious mileage range then they probably aren't that good for the enviroment. If riders have it as a second bike then the enviromental impact on an individual basis is immense. One bike that does everything is the ideal not multiple enviromental damage to assemble 3 or 4 bikes for different types of riding.
I don't think I could possibly tour on an electric bike as range anxiety would spoil the riding pleasure. Love the bike though. I'll never own one without a lottery win. I'd be afraid if I bought one the technology would be obsolete before I finished paying for it!
Never had range anxiety on a petrol bike, almost running out of petrol, with no petrol station in miles to come? You can (private) lease it or take a monthly paid loan for it (I did the latter).
DC and AC infrastructure in the Netherlands is so good that I seldom plan a trip ahead anymore. But yes, my bike does DC charging, so that makes a difference.
