I have watched this video four times in a row and I still totally lose my shit every time. How she managed to sing this with a straight face will remain one of pop's great mysteries.
The year was 1980. I discovered this gem when I was searching for archive footage about Northampton to include in a documentary I made last year about the town. I'm hoping to get the documentary online soon once some problems have been sorted. :)
Linda Jardim...a very talented singer! She was one of the backing singers on 'Video killed the radio star' by 'Buggles' back in the day. She gave this song its heart/soul/class. No longer with us, sadly...she passed away in 2015.
Apparently Northamptonshire County Council are skint - maybe they should release a remix of this?! Seriously, do you think Fatboy Slim or Trevor Horn might be interested?
I assume you know that the singer, Linda Jardim, was in the Buggles alongside Horn around that time. I really wish he'd been involved as well. Definite top 10 smash.
I need that sleeve design on a shirt. Very Great Gatsby-ish. Just a shame they didn't wait another few years and then they could've included the lift tower on the skyline.
I especially love that the image shown of men in a factory under the lines about 'energy' looks to me an awful lot like the Carlsberg factory! Oh, how I miss the place...
And just a few miles south of Northampton... ua-cam.com/video/eyIls75IhaY/v-deo.html Yes, this is Ronnie Bond, former drummer with The Troggs, doing a promo for Milton Keynes! Only in the UK - what a country!
I do not know exactly why. But I just love the slight jump in the image at each edit point. I'm guessing this was shot and cut on 16 mm before being broadcast? I can almost hear the splice as it moves through the telecine :)
From 2:56 onwards, it seems that someone has placed some pornographic material next to the recording camera, and Basil Bean is attempting to look at it without making it noticable
@@gv-k4f7g5b9 it doesn't matter what you compare it to , it would still be a steaming pile of crap by comparison. It was unsuccessful as a song or as a sales jingle for northampton. Why do you ask ?
@@2506poacher Im not sure i agree. Your statement "it doesn't matter what you compare it to , it would still be a steaming pile of crap by comparison".......... well if you compared it to Luton i would disagree with you as Luton really is a pile of crap......... whoever if you compared Northampton to say the Cotswolds i would agree with you.
I'm trapped in a hotel in Northampton right now, and this video is helping make sense of it all

Great song worthy of Northampton

Bankrupt Tory scum Northampton
Oh man, this is f*cking sublime! I feel so proud of my home town, no wonder my parents from the planet Thraxxon moved their so long ago.....
John Peel played it on his BBC radio show a few times, in amongst all the alternative and indie bands he usually played
My mum worked at the Development Corporation and we had a copy of this single. Think my sister's still got it :)
Come and see '60 Miles By Road or Rail' at the Royal & Derngate. 22nd - 25th sep 2021
It sounded like it could have been a British Gas advert from that era. I like it though!
this is absolutely awesome, I wish my town had a song this good!
A guy in a suit says "punk's all the rage at the moment"...those were the days. Such a Classic song too.

Theres another version of this in the Shoe Museum. I could recite the words to it.
I want this song now.

Northampton residents now have no right to take the mickey out of Milton Keynes' advertising campaigns...
I wonder if the man from the NDC was the inspiration for Rowan Atkinson's "Mr Bean" ?
Holy Crap! Boots has been there for ages
Northampton? Energy? hmm..... I'm not so sure.
I like it!
Anyone know where I can download both her full songs about Northampton?
I have tried iTunes ~ and of course they have nothing.
