    What do you do with all the bee wax that you get from your bee hives? For me, I save it up till I have a nice pile of it, and then I melt it all down. It's a slow process, but when it's done, you wind up with the prettiest, sweet smelling, chemical free bees wax around. Check out the way I do it here at Saint Joseph Abbey. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

    I added the cocoons and rubbish from the process to the garden...makes great soil conditioner and chickens love to dig it in...my guess is there are other micro nutrients as well...

      How do you break the clump of cocoons apart. That thing is as hard as a rock? There are chickens at the abbey and I'd love to put it in their yard with the compost pile. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    I just finished rendering my wax yesterday from the frames we harvested from the honey inside my kitchen with a small kettle pot. It's kinda messy to filter inside the house with a ladle and a strainer, but worth it! I was able to get roughly 2 pounds of wax so far just from the honey frames we harvested. I keep my wax and I'll turn most of it into candles for us to burn. This has been our third year as beekeepers in the upper Midwest.

      For years I melted wax in my old soup pot on top of a burner.....outside. The whole process is nasty, but the finished product is both beautiful and smells so good. Here is a link to the follow up video to this one showing what I use my wax for. Hopefully, in the future, there will be excess wax from our bees that it can then be use in our candle operation here at the abbey. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

    All of that honey water and comb scum makes FANTASTIC fertilizer for the garden, by the way. It is a bit on the acidic side, so usually you want to dilute the water, or mix the scum in small doses with other fertilizer. My indoor and outdoor plants absolutely thrive on the stuff. • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 років тому +2

      The main problem with the first filtering is the amount of debris in the wax. More than half the material in the melter is cocoons and trash. 2 quick questions: how many hive boxes did you need to collect all that wax & how much does a 15 pound block of wax sells for?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 років тому +8

      I really don't have any idea how much wax was collected to produce this much refined wax.....it was a LOT. It was more than 7 months worth of collected wax. Rendered wax can sell from $9.00 a pound to up to $ 35.00 a pound. It depends on the purity of the wax and also the source of the wax. Because I have treatment free bees, therefore treatment free bees wax, it would sell for for about $ 15.00 a pound, but I don't sell wax as I need it all for our bees. I give it right back to them. God's peace.

      We get about 4 pounds of wax from the cappings from 6 or 8 medium honey supers. Have been using a big canning pot on a turkey fryer. We harvest around 30 pounds of wax a season off approximately 40 colonies. We use it to coat new foundations and make some candles. The bees will work on the new foundation and get it drawn out into combs much faster if you give each foundation a nice coating of fresh bees wax from your own hives.

I purchased the wax rendering machine from Cowan manufacturing out of Utah and it's a honey separator and wax separator all in one unit it is made to set a drum of your extracting cap pings upside down with a grated lid and it drips all the liquids out and drains into another square box which is equipped with a water jacket and heated with a element to not burn your honey but keeps everything well liquified until your ready to pour off.This machine works pretty good but it was a little pricey

Good thing I built over 400 frames and 52 hive boxes while it was -20 and colder out, a head of time. So, when I have bee's to take a photo of, you bet I'd love to share them with you. Between waiting for bee's to arrive in April, and getting married in July...the anticipation in waiting is building my excitement....woot!! ps...not many swarms in Alaska, unless about a million acres starts to burn, that forces them to move to places one can actually find them.

    I use a strainer that's basically a paper towel on top of a window screen. As it melts, the nasty stuff gets left on top of the paper towel and the wax sinks through to my pot full of water. My process only takes a day because the straining process is more exact instead of manual. I hope you can use this for your larger operation instead of hand straining it. Happy Thanksgiving!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 років тому

      Because of the volume of material I process, the amount of debris is tremendous, and a "simple" strainer can not handle the load. I have refined the process by adding a screened material in the kettle which eliminates over 95% of the heavy contaminants, and use a simple strainer to remove the rest. Here is a link to the last rendering video I made. Till next time, thanks for watching, and Happy Thanksgiving! God's peace. Mr. Ed

    Mr Jeff, If I had that waxy cocoon stuff I would spread it thinner cut it in small blocks and use it for firestarters....or you can compost it with other garden waste for the garden Also if it is smaller chickens will pick it apart for feed. Rick

      Catching swarms is one of the things I really love to do. I have been setting traps for over 5 years now and have caught dozens of swarms over the years.I will be setting my traps at the end of this month. Also, I will be making a video on that very subject at the same time, I hope you will check it out. I wish you all the luck in catching free bees. Keep me posted on your adventure. God's peace. Thank you for a great educational and fun video! You're really giving away that wax to the monks? That sounds as an extremely noble cause, not to mention how much you help the environment by keeping the bees. I wish you the best of luck and good health.

      Actually, I keep the bees for a Benedictine monastery in Louisiana. The whole program belongs to the monks, I'm just the lucky guy that gets to play with the bees. The monks have known for centuries the benefits of bees and have been keeping them as part of their life style. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

      So glad you enjoyed the video. I wanted to suggest to you to find a bee club in your area and join it now. You do not need to have bees to belong to a club, just a love for them. You will meet some really great folks who can give you valuable information on keeping bee in the area you live and that is very important. Folks up north keep bees different from folks down south, food and climate have everything to do with it. Let me know how you progress goes. God's peace.

    If you pour the wax in a traffic cone shape the surface area to scrape on the bottom is significantly reduced making for easier scraping and a much smaller soiled surface.
    --------------------------
    If you add a spigot at the bottom of the cone shape you can drain the water leaving mostly just wax, making the bottom crud area even smaller.

    I don't know about processing bees wax but I do know processing other oily / waxy stuff, if you were to add a few gallons of water to that wax after you skim off the junk on top, boil it under a hard boil for a few minutes and then let it settle out, you would be able to remove most of the sediment on your initial strain and have a much cleaner wax product after the fact.
    The key is to boil the water with the wax in it so as to dislodge all of that crap from the wax and allow it to sink. Repeating this process a few times will leave you with extremely clean product.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  7 років тому

    Used beeswax to prepare my " best boots " during my British Army service , for the layers of polish needed for a well bulled , parade standard shine. Contributes greatly to the mirror finish boots worn by Guardsmen / Household Cavalry on ceremonial duties in London. Does smell nice whilst burning it onto boots !!
