Watched this one again today. It's amazing to me that you filled the entire tank up with that comb wax vs just a bit in the bottom of the capping wax, yet in the first rendering there was nearly twice as much capping wax (in volume) as there was the comb wax! Pretty amazing that those bees can make that honeycomb so fine and delicate that when you melt it down there's not very much there. Nature is truly a miracle.
Rendering wax is always a great time for me, and I've done several. The good news is I'm about to do another one real soon, get ready. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. 1. I am retired, and volunteer my time for the monks. My main time allotments go to bee keeping and casket building. 2. For my purposes, the waxes could be mixed. I simply apply the wax to plastic foundation so bees will draw it out and not have to make any themselves. However, the capping wax is a more valuable wax and most people do not mix them. Good questions Dawn, thanks for watching and asking. Till the next time, God's peace. Mr. Ed

Jeff Horchoff OH WOW thanks so much Jeff 😀 You were spot on, and I could follow along very well. I've always noticed beeswax as an ingredient in MANY different products. Yet never had a clue HOW wax could actually tie into bees. Due to this I'd never been able to find the correlation. You taught us about BOTH types, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. great video mr ed! question: Is Purer yellow filtered wax from cappings a bit better for bees drawing comb out. You would think the purer wax from cappings would be better? thoughts?
I have been told that capping wax is the best type of wax to put on your foundations, and I have been doing that for the last 2 years and it works well for me. Of course, prior to that, I was using brood wax and it worked very well also. Thanks for watching. God's peace bother. Mr. Ed
Not so long ago we got our toilet replaced; and the plumber got a beeswax ring to seal the union between it's hole and the hole on the ground. I thought it would be really expensive, but now that I remember it was cheap because it was a very dark wax, so I think it was brood comb wax. And there is not a leak. Pretty useful and easy to install.
Your story reminded me of when I had to change out the wax ring on one of our toilets, and I have to say, there may be some bees wax in the wax ring, but now way is it 100% bees wax. They really work well though. Thanks for sharing your story and for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
You don't seem to have extreme trouble getting the hardened wax out of the buckets. Does bees wax shrink as it hardens? My wax always sticks to the inside.
I have a lot of water when I melt the wax, and the wax does pull away from the sides of the bucket as it cools. Thanks for watching. God's peace Heidi. Mr. Ed

Is the leftover "trash" ok to feed to chickens, or would it make good compost? I heard you say in your last vlog that you throw it in the dumpster. I would think people might buy compost, or even give it to chicken farmers in exchange for eggs??????

Great video Jeff. I just love this aspect of bee keeping. It is nice to see the process that you go through. I see that the Monks finally got a nice chair for you. Usually you sit on a bucket. Keep up the good work. Have a great weekend. God Bless, Tim
The truth bee known Tim, the chair was " appropriated" from one of the conference rooms. It was out in the hall for a few weeks, and then all of a sudden it was at the honey house. In case it finds it's way back to the conference room, I still have my buckets. Thank you for your blessing and for following along. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
hey just out of curiosity can you take all that stuff, the cocoons and all that can you throw that in the garden do you think that would help the Garden or something or you just going to throw it away?
That's exactly what happens with it now. One of the monks chops it up and puts it in the compost pile, it helps with aeration, so I'm told. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
hi Jeff, when i see how much wax you are rendering, i always wonder how many hives in total you have? What do you do with the wax? The capping wax, and the comb wax...? Wouldn't that be a nice winter vid?
There are about 100 plus hives in the Abbee Honey operation, but not all of them are honey producers. All the capping came from about 40 of our hives, and the comb is mostly from removals so that can vary significantly. I have made a video already on what I use the wax for, and I'll include a link to it at the end of the comment. Thanks for watching. God's peace Sascha. Mr. Ed ua-cam.com/video/lHypOrBITMk/v-deo.html

Beautiful work, Mr.Ed! I had never seen the process done but it is really interesting to watch. Thanks so much for your videos. They are so much fun to see. Love your channel!
Thank you for the well-produced, informative, and fascinating video. Seeing those finished blocks was very satisfying. It's interesting that the water you add seems to completely separate during the cooling process.
They can be and are used for the same things, but the more refined the wax is, it's uses in cosmetics becomes more. For me, I just roll it on my plastic foundation for the frames and it works perfectly. Here's the link to the video. God's peace Matthew. ua-cam.com/video/lHypOrBITMk/v-deo.html
sorry if this has been asked before, but is there any difference in how these two waxes behave or burn if used in candles? Is it basically the same thing, but just different colors? Would using one over the other be better for skin balm as an example? Thank you for the video, very interesting.
There is no difference except for the color. the lighter one is more desirable for cosmetics than the darker one. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Wow! I was really surprised by the difference in volume between the cone wax vs capping wax, but i guess it makes sense considering cones are mainly hollow
There is a lot of space in comb wax whereas the cappings are packed together. However, they both smell fantastic. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
@@joerowland607 I have a boyhood pal down there somewhere. He used to own Steel horse Junction and now lives in an over 50's place there. His wife says when the leaves start changing colors here the license plates there start changing colors and goes from a population of 8K to 50K. I'll stay here and enjoy the peace and quiet after all of them leave.
With your screen setup under the valve, if you had a cone filter in that sieve/holder below it -- you'll end up with some clear wax; but you've got to use the filters for cooking oil like in restaurants. Also, do you add vinegar into your water when you start the boil?
Thank you for the suggestion, and no, I do not add vinegar. By adding it, what does that do? Thanks for the help and for watching. God's peace Kyle. Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff if there are any excess hydroxide ions, or essentially any soaps/disinfectants/alkaline stuff like lye, will cause a little of your wax to start turning into soap -- the acid in the vinegar prevents that reaction from happening
Thank you so much for your blessing, it is greatly appreciated. So glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling adventures. Till then, God's peace. Mr. Ed
I met the wax and then roll it onto plastic foundations which are placed into wooden frames that are then put into the hive body. At that point, the bees will draw the wax out to form the individual cells that stores or brood will be placed in. Here's the link to to a video I made on that process. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed ua-cam.com/video/lHypOrBITMk/v-deo.html
How much is the wax worth? I did plumbing for work and we buy wax rings for toilets, but the simple seal was about $1. So i didn't think there was much value in it, how expensive is it to run the equipment to get those chunks of wax?
Bees wax sells between $8.00 to $35.00 per pound depending upon the quality of the wax, and how much refining it has gone through. God's peace Thomas. Mr. Ed
do you sell your beeswax? Ive been watcing your videos lately and it has reminded me I have to buy some. I always prefer to buy from small businesses than big box stores when I can. If you do indeed sell it do you ship to Ontario Canada and do you have an online presence somewhere that I could order from?
I'm sorry to say, but no. We do not produce enough as it is to supply the bees, the candles, and the soap. Thank you for asking though. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Loved your video. You seemed a teeny bit glum in this one. You did a lot of work as always! I am binge watching you right now. Lol. That "garbage" from the cacoons is gold! The wax is so beautiful that you rendered. Where is the honey sold to retail customers? In store? or online?
If I appeared "glummy" it was due to the weather, I hate cold. Our honey is sold only at the St. Joseph Abbey Gift Shop, and some of the wax is used in the candle operation. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Can you strain the wax into another bucket while it is still hot and melted, maybe you could strain several times, from one bucket, to another bucket. Then you wouldnt have to put the wax back into your Melter again. I don't know anything about this,so I'm probably off base. It just seems to me, if you kept straining it, from bucket to bucket, while it is still hot on the first melt, you wouldnt have to go in for a second melt. Provided you had enough buckets to strain the wax into. Just wondering.
Wax cools incredibly fast, and the way you are suggesting would cause more difficulty due to the lumps in the wax from the different stages of cooling. In theory, it's great, but practically speaking, it's more trouble. Thank you for your suggestion, I appreciate you wanting to help. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Thank you for answering. I wasn't even thinking about how fast wax cools. I love your videos and learn so much. Have a great week. Thank you again for responding.

Jeff, if you poured them into either a cone or a long thin tube you removing nasty gunk would be much easier. The tube might prove difficult to remove the wax from, but if you could, you'd have a nice solid line of junk which is easier to slice off than scrape off so much area from your current buckets.
Trying to separate and get rid of the nasty stuff is always the real challenge when rendering bees wax. I can not tell you how many ways I have tried to refine the process, and I'm still not satisfied yet, but I am getting closer. Thank you for your suggestion and for following along. Till next time. God's peace. Mr. Ed
Jeff, can't you just keep rinsing the wax with clean water to lighten the color of the darker wax? I personally like the darker wax for it's antimicrobial properties. I make a reusable food container wrap with thin cloth and beeswax for storage in the refrigerator.
The more you refine it, the lighter it will get. For me, the dark color is good enough for my purposes of waxing foundation with it. You are the second person to mention about the food container wraps using bees wax, I am going to look that one up. Thanks for watching and suggesting. God's peace. Mr. Ed
What do you do with the two waxes? Just candles, also perfumes? What else? How about “AXE WAX? For treating hanger, hatchet handles and axe handles? Very good video. JoeB
Some of our wax is used in the production of candles and soap products, but the majority is given right back to the bees. Here is the link to the video showing what and how I use the wax for. Thanks for watching. God's peace Joseph. Mr. Ed ua-cam.com/video/lHypOrBITMk/v-deo.html

2 questions
1) is beekeeping your full time of hobby
2) would ever mix the two types of wax or always keep em separate?
Till the next time, God's peace.

great video mr ed! question: Is Purer yellow filtered wax from cappings a bit better for bees drawing comb out. You would think the purer wax from cappings would be better? thoughts?

Not so long ago we got our toilet replaced; and the plumber got a beeswax ring to seal the union between it's hole and the hole on the ground. I thought it would be really expensive, but now that I remember it was cheap because it was a very dark wax, so I think it was brood comb wax. And there is not a leak. Pretty useful and easy to install.
Your story reminded me of when I had to change out the wax ring on one of our toilets, and I have to say, there may be some bees wax in the wax ring, but now way is it 100% bees wax. They really work well though. Thanks for sharing your story and for watching. God's peace.

hi Jeff, when i see how much wax you are rendering, i always wonder how many hives in total you have?
What do you do with the wax? The capping wax, and the comb wax...? Wouldn't that be a nice winter vid?
There are about 100 plus hives in the Abbee Honey operation, but not all of them are honey producers. All the capping came from about 40 of our hives, and the comb is mostly from removals so that can vary significantly. I have made a video already on what I use the wax for, and I'll include a link to it at the end of the comment. Thanks for watching. God's peace Sascha. Mr. Ed

sorry if this has been asked before, but is there any difference in how these two waxes behave or burn if used in candles? Is it basically the same thing, but just different colors? Would using one over the other be better for skin balm as an example? Thank you for the video, very interesting.

Mr. Ed

What do you do with the two waxes?
Just candles, also perfumes? What else? How about “AXE WAX? For treating hanger, hatchet handles and axe handles?
