When you look at the script of the show it’s general sibling squabbling and I wholeheartedly believe that the producers never meant to make Derek and Casey have any tension towards each other; but I think because the actors were attracted to each other in real life (I heard rumors they dated) their attraction seeped into their characters which explains all of that.
That's why they tried to limit screen time between Dove Cameron and her boyfriend Thomas on Descendants. They couldn't help the looks in their eyes when they saw one another and their characters weren't supposed to even like each other but have a strong hatred.
It still makes me CACKLE that they had to take the show of Disney channel because of this. When I was younger every episode I would be like “wait are they about to kiss right now???” 😂

So ultimately my question is why would you feel comfortable dating your step sibling but wouldn’t feel comfortable dating your full sibling?

The only other grounds on which I could see to stigmatize a relationship like this would be if one was significantly older than the other or had some other significant power over the other, which I don't think is the case here.

I think it's because a lot of Canadian Disney shows are geared towards an older audience. Same thing with My Babysitters a Vampire. That show definitely had inappropriate jokes flying around that you wouldn't normally hear in an American Disney show.

Then again that meant 11+, we seem to be a bit more open about that sort of thing in Britain, probably because of the comprehensive school model meaning age 11-18 are in one school together.

Dude, they (the actors) had such perfect chemistry that even I noticed something was wrong. Like, in my own head I was like "if they weren't siblings they'd make a good couple" that was when my eyes went wide and I was like Oh, Ohhhh, Oh no... this is not platonic at all!
They aren't siblings...its weird that people think two non related people aren't supposed to like each other. In real life, parents who put their kids in this situation keep the kids away from each other, specifically for this reason.

They obviously couldn't separate the script from their personal feelings towards each other. For a kids' show, that isn't okay. I was fairly young when I first watched it, and I could pick up on the crush they had on each other. Hell actors who absolutely hate each other in real life have been able to act out a role and play the opposite without that dislike showing through the screen.

If you really got into thinking abt it what stops you from dating your blood sibling (not saying you should or that I ever would but look at it from that perspective) nothing stops you from dating your blood sibling other than your feelings really. So ultimately my question is why would you feel comfortable dating your step sibling but wouldn’t feel comfortable dating your full sibling?

It's a bit ableist and eugenic in my opinion. Plus, I don't think that a hypothetical fetus/embryo should decide what two people do with their bodies. The only other grounds on which I could see to stigmatize a relationship like this would be if one was significantly older than the other or had some other significant power over the other, which I don't think is the case here.

I think it's because a lot of Canadian Disney shows are geared towards an older audience. Same thing with My Babysitters a Vampire. That show definitely had inappropriate jokes flying around that you wouldn't normally hear in an American Disney show.
I know this is old comment, but I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. I remember LWD on the Disney Channel as a teen in Britain as being on during the old kids time slot. Then again that meant 11+, we seem to be a bit more open about that sort of thing in Britain, probably because of the comprehensive school model meaning age 11-18 are in one school together.
