That film blew me away when I was a little kid here in England. I'd heard "TNTDODD" but I knew nothing about Dr John so it was life changing for me & Joni Mitchell wow!!
Thankfully I still can learn great tunes from the best teacher on UA-cam. You may be done, but you sure left a wonderful catalog. What ever you are up to. May you be blessed
Dude, you make it so easy to figure out. I know you put a lot of work into these and I appreciate it so much. It's like you're a friend now, showing me the way. I'm so busy at work I can never take the time to rest let alone pick these things apart. I'm very grateful for your tutlelage. Thx
Their first 3 albums are 10/10. Damn shame that they started to drift after that. Yeah their other albums are good. But them first 3 albums they proved that a band can be just as good as The Beatles.
Thanks Man, for doing the song from the most quintessential Americana rock and roll "The Band". The singing and musicianship of these American and Canadian talent of Robbie's writing and Garth's Mad genius, to Rick, and Richard's vocals that could call Angels down from Heaven, and also of course Levon's back beat and tonic singing made the sound of this group simply Magical! The harmony's were transcendent! Whenever you get the chance...as Oliver Twist said "Please Sir, Can I Have Some More"....lol, thank you so much!!
Your choice for lessons keeps me dedicated to your page not to mention your selection of guitars to make the songs sound as close to original as possible. I really like that J45. I had a 1956 and loved the 1 11/16 nut. Perfect size for a very young kid. I lost it to a luthier in the 70's who was supposed to do the frets but instead closed shop along with so many other people's instruments. Seeing you play it brings me a memories of a time well spent learning the basics and first chords.
This one is much appreciated boss . Doesn't get much better than the band . They can all play multiple instruments well and they all can sing, except maybe garth I don't think he did much singing. Number 2 in all time great bands for me , just under the Stones at number 1.
Well Robbie didn't sing much in The Band... for a good reason because Levon, Rick and Richard were incredible singers and Robbie below average being generous :-)
There is weird german version of that song with lyrics about some teen going from the devils lettuce to 'trips' and syringes and finally dying. "Am tag als konnie kramer starb" is the name of that version
Agreed, love when the Dm RESOLVES to a D major, just sets up that chorus in such a powerful way. Great lesson here man, giving me some great ideas for songs to add at gigs and campfires. Keep on a rockin'.
Wow this one got past me. What a pleasant surprise. For me a new lesson from James James. Even though I played this song. I've learned a few embellishments from watching this. Love this guy's videos. Hopefully he's enjoying his life and he's okay
When I was first starting out learning the guitar, playing this song really motivated me. While you said the Dm to the Dmaj makes this song, I always loved the way the C to Fmaj7 drives the chorus. I was bored playing the standard I, IV, V progression, but then I found this song and got inspired - What Song Inspired You When You Were First Learning the Guitar?
Never new Biaz recorded it . You do know Vivian Lawrence done the original version. She recorded it when she was on the Carol Burnett show . Evidently Levon Helms and Robby Robertson liked it too .
@@jsm3233 I know. The list of guest musicians and singers is extraordinary. Almost as good as the last waltz. Maybe my favorite concept album next to synchronicity.
You have probably moved on to another song but I think what he is doing is a down strum focused on the open g string then hammering on the second fret of the g string and then playing a up strum (seemingly hitting the high E string mainly) immediately after that and just repeating that a few times. So its just a down-up-down-up-down-up strum on the D and E string with the hammer on between the down and up strum. Idk if this is right because I am very much a guitar novice but it sounds right and when I slowed down the video to look for which strings moved on each sound it seemed to line up.
You can bring on anything by THE BAND and I will be a happy man! I love those guys and was lucky enough to see Levon Helm not long before he left us.
Last Waltz version has got to be the definitive performance for me
In his book, Levon said that was the best performance of it that they ever did.
The horn sections make it 10x better
That film blew me away when I was a little kid here in England. I'd heard "TNTDODD" but I knew nothing about Dr John so it was life changing for me & Joni Mitchell wow!!

Great lesson, thank you!

Even better than the Beatles in many ways. Most of all, they sure could play live!
Your passion for the music always gets me. Thanks for this lesson. I’m going through a “The Band” phase right now.
lol same here, had to learn it, after learning the weight this was my #2
The tone of that guitar is sublime
Sweet! Thanks!

Thanks for that JJ 👍 Love the Band 👏
These little licks fills that you demonstrate make all the difference. I have learned so much from your vids.
Thanks so much for showing how to play this song. It's a favorite. You do a first rate lesson, as always.
You done it well ole son, t´anks !

Nice! Look forward to sitting down with this one.
Wow , just an amazing job with this tune .

That’s great JJ. One of my all time faves. The last waltz version is etched in my mind under great times. Cheers from Oztralia

Amazing, I was just figuring that song out a few days ago.

Awesome brother
I just knew he’d have a lesson on this song
As you often do with songs, you filled in the gaps that I didn’t know for this one, all the bits that make it fun and unique. Thanks!
awesome! Thank you!
Very Nice - Always enjoyed The Band, Great Job!
Great lesson my friend ! Love Music from the Big Pink album.
This is a godsend thanks so much for making it Easy....really buzzing to hit some people with this tune...the words hang so brilliantly....✌️
This is great, because I love the last waltz version, it's like he's giving his all for the last one, sounds incredible. Thanks!
Thank you for the help on this tune. You cleared up a small change that I had missed
Good video. Thanks
Get Down brother🙏
Great job with this dude!!
Such a great help!
There is weird german version of that song with lyrics about some teen going from the devils lettuce to 'trips' and syringes and finally dying.
"Am tag als konnie kramer starb" is the name of that version
You didn't use Google translate did you?
Thanks for the lesson man, super helpful
Dylan's "(Baby) Let Me Follow You Down" from that great performance is so groovy as well! Danko on bass.
Great! Thanks for sharing.

Haha yes that D major!
Super helpful and beautifully explained. Thanks dude
If you want to play along with Manuel's piano chords on the descendant chromatic part between the two final refrains: C G/B Bb F/A Ab C/G D/F#
Nice shirt! The HOG! The ROC!
Soft spot for Joan's version mostly because it made me seek out the original way back when
I love those one note changes
D minor to D major
It’s the little things
James James is my name and I'm playing my guitar again.....
Cheers mate 👍
Thanks for the lesson. The walk downs/ups are so beautiful.
New guitar sounds good. Still hearing the rattle?
Just picked up the "New Barbarians" book by Rob Chapman. I advise you (JJ) and all Stones fans to check it out. Wonderful photos...and t-shirts!
Hey thanks! ❤
Thanks
had to click for the house of guitars shirt
FLUSH
Just love the dm to dmaj
That is one tight sounding Gibson. J45? Excellent job as always!
Sophie B Hawkins also does a version of this song. Hers is mainly vocal & piano.
Never new Biaz recorded it . You do know Vivian Lawrence done the original version. She recorded it when she was on the Carol Burnett show . Evidently Levon Helms and Robby Robertson liked it too .
No, Robbie wrote this song. You’re thinking of Vicky Lawrence, and her song was The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.
Hey James, thank you very much!
Can’t see your strumming hand. Can you help me w the strumming pattern??
I have the same guitar 2019 version. What strings do you like?
👍
How would one go about sending a t shirt to you? I see no process for direct messaging on UA-cam.
Sterling choice.
James- what do you think of Robbie's solo stuff? I really like storyville and music for the native Americans.
I love his first solo album, but I haven't really kept up since then.
Storyville is an incredible album, start to finish, every song is amazing.
@@jsm3233 I know. The list of guest musicians and singers is extraordinary. Almost as good as the last waltz. Maybe my favorite concept album next to synchronicity.
Great lesson for a brilliant song.
HEY, I KNOW THIS DUD !!! at 1:24 is that a G/ C chord
WUSSSSSSUPPPP??
I cant understand how you are doing the hammering thing in DM. Wish i could see what you re right hand is doing
