The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Written by: Robbie Robertson
    From: “The Band” (1969)
The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as The Band's "farewell concert appearance",[2] and the concert had The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including their previous employers Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, as well as Paul Butterfield, Bobby Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, and Neil Young. The musical director for the concert was The Band's original record producer, John Simon.
The Band was a Canadian-American rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. It consisted of four Canadians and one American: Rick Danko (bass, guitar, vocals, fiddle), Garth Hudson (organ, keyboards, accordion, saxophone), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, songwriting, vocals), and Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin, guitar). The Band combined elements of Americana, folk, rock, jazz, country, and R&B, influencing subsequent musicians such as Elton John, the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton and Wilco.

Hey Jon, I want to make sure and say this first- THANK YOU a bunch for doing a lesson on this great song. The first thing that struck me about learning this song was when I went to look at the chords on the most popular guitar tab sites....right away I noticed someone had made a mistake. When the Band sings " in the winter of 65" you show a AM/E chord that is correct The tab sites show an Em chord in that spot...and it sounds bad so its wrong for sure. No offence but I can tell that you are beginner guitar player. Thats totally OK, I think you did a great job and I think you are vary brave for also singing the song. You inspired me to not give up trying to sing. Since you obviously love this music and have watched the "last Waltz" several times, I want to take this opportunity to talk a little bit about "The Band" and my experience. You are a young man, I am old. I am 66 now and have been playing guitar for over 50 years. I love "The Last Waltz" movie, in fact I watched it again today. However it took me all these years to realize how great "The Band" really was. In fact I went to see them play but I didn't appreciate it at the time or realize just what a great band I was watching. You have to understand the era I grew up in though, this was a time when, bands like Led Zep, Tom Petty, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones and many more were popular. I also got to see all of those bands and more.Anyway thanks again !!! Oh BTW I wanted to also mention how surreal it is watching the Last Waltz now and realizing it was made clear back in 1976 and knowing most of them have all passed on now---so sad.
