Found family/family of choice is my absolute favorite trope. It brings a lot of comfort to me and stories that feature them prominently are my favorites. It makes having favorite individual characters a little difficult though lol so I usually have favorite groups or pairs with dynamics that I really like.
I know it's not quite a book (although there are books, I think?) but the minute you said anti-villain I sighed and thought of my beloved Zuko from Avatar. Best anti-villain EVER
Zuko deserved so much more than he got in the Avatar series. Like, Boi, I would happily write my entire college thesis on how good his character development is because that's just how amazing he is.
Anti-heroes are my life! I need those gray area morally-ambiguous characters in books/movies because otherwise I get bored. Also parallel worlds / alternate universe are definitely things that immediately spark my interest in fiction.
My favorite trope is also the anti hero/anti villain trope! Those are always my favorite characters in anything I read because they're just so fascinating!! Also of course, like you said, the anguished declarations of love. I live for that.
The enemies/rival to lovers trope is my favorite as well, more because they do fight and they do seem like they treat each other seriously and are on even ground (the take give as good as they take) and that to me kinda makes it more appealing than the 'senpai notice me' trope because in that one it just seems like a power imbalance and also you KNOW they're going to have a fight over nothing and you dread it, where in the enemies/rival to lovers they're already fighting so you get excited for when they start developing feelings for one and another. And I also love anti-hero/villain as long as they're not petty jerks or go for the whole 'I can't tell them to protect them' (this kinda falls into the miscommunication trope with I hate with a fiery passion, but I've seen it work with an anti-villain.) Edit: Actually coming back to this, the petty thing kinda does work with some characters (looking at you Draco), so all I can say is that I'm picky and indecisive but I do love anti-hero/villains none the less. It's actually really fun to see what tropes you can mix in together and get wildly different outcomes.
I like the Experienced Protagonist trope too! I never thought about that, but I totally like it! I love the anguished profession of love, also. Katsa + Po forever.
Little Prairie Library Katsa and Po are precious babies. And yeah! I hadn't thought of the experienced protag either, but when I was looking up tropes I discovered that one and realized how much I love it. We don't have to waste as much time with training montages or convincing the protag they can do it! They know and they are a badass for it.
I love the hate-to-love couples. It seems more realistic than the instalove found in ya. I am totally with you on the not black-and-white characters. It does give them dimension. Excellent video like always :)
You had some really awesome responses! The Hate to Love troupe is always so much fun! Alternate universes are always so intriguing to me. Anti-hero/villian trope is my ALL TIME FAVORITE, I love those kinds of characters so so SO much!
I love the hate-to-love couples too and the bestfriend-to-love couples. I totally agree with the grey character thing, It makes the them more interesting.
All of those tropes are my favorite! Especially the hate-to-love and anti-hero/villain/gray character type thing! And how you mentioned when characters are already a badass before the story starts!
I like when the love interest starts out as a friend. I mean 100% only a friend because lots of books starts off with the main character already crushing on the person for their looks.
Golden trios. They give me such joy. I always end up shipping them, but I absolutely love them. Like, Harry, Ron, and Hermione? Luke, Han, and Leia? Sticky, Reynie, and Kate? Oh my God. Love. It.
I've just watched this after watching your most hated tropes video and I swear we have the exact same loves and hates! Especially yes to the 'hate to love' couple - I'm going to blame that on falling in love with Darcy at a very young age! And the anti-hero/anti-villain - by far my favourite types of characters!
All the ones you discussed are pretty much all of my favorites too. But I also really love a good love triangle...like Jack, Evie, and Aric from the Arcana Chronicles!
My favourite experienced protagonist is Sparhawk, from David Eddings Elenium and Tamuli trilogies. In fact, when I first read the Elenium, and was first introduced to Sparhawk (coming home from campaign, if I recall correctly), he was so well established that I honestly tried looking for earlier books, thinking I must have missed something.
Holtz, from the TV series Angel, is one of my favourite anti-villains. It's impossible to catagorically judge him when you learn what Angelus and Darla did to him, how they destroyed his life. Even Angel himself admits to being on very shaky moral high ground when it comes to Holtz.
Hi, I really liked your video =). Some of my favorite tropes are: "The chosen one" character, the couple that starts as just one loving the other madly/too strongly and finally, after months or years, they end as a couple =), and almost any dystopian setting. I agree with your picks on antiheroes/antivillains and the hate-love couples.
You may enjoy the Word and Void trilogy from the massive Shannara series. The first, Running with the Demon (if you don't count the short story Imaginary Friends, but I recommend the read), has a PoV character (one of four) who lives the future when asleep and it changes depending on his actions and others. So you end up seeing several possible futures throughout the novel. It also has that something hidden trope you enjoy with fae (who eventually evolve into elves way later, chronologically, in the series) and demon - which is one of the most realistic portrayals I've had the pleasure of experiencing (non of the satanic/devil spawn BS) A demon is actually one of the PoV characters which really helps you understand what the demons actually are. Another PoV is a girl named Nest (the main character) who's well aware of her ability but isn't perfect with it, and the last one is her grandfather who is the everyday person ignorant of anything fantasmic yet still an interesting character the story couldn't do without. It's magical realism for the most part but does have some more surreal moments that lean towards the high fantasy the series later becomes Old Magic is also a novel (standalone) that's told from the perspective of someone who grew up learning about magic and is quite learned, so she's not having to learn along the way and is constantly applying what she knows as well as looking for other solutions. Another one with heavy magical realism as well as a historical touch.
Katsa and Po from Graceling are my BABIES! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!! I decided to watch some videos before typing out my list for this week, and now I'm laughing so much because almost all of yours are the same as my favorite tropes! Hate-love couples are my life. I love them so much, and anti-heroes/anti-villains are just the best. My favorite, of course, is when the anti-hero or anti-villain is one half of the hate-love couple.
Sara Fredheim Aren't they precious!? They are so precious! YES! When you combine the anti-whatever with the hate/love couple it actually gives me life. That's the recipe for a 5 star book right there.
They are!!! I read Graceling with my boyfriend, and I just kept rolling around on the bed squealing at how precious they were while the boyfriend rolled his eyes a little. I cannot help it! They are the best.
I absolutely love the hate to love relationships. I love when the tension between the characters remains even after their feelings are out there. There's something about that relationship that is almost angst ridden that makes me love them. Also it often makes for really interesting banter. My friends never understood why I loved Draco. I had this near obsession with him. There was always something about him that fascinated me and I always wanted more of him in the story. Whenever he appeared I just reveled in him. I loved that he was the kind of character that might completely ruin your day just for his own amusement, but that kind of deep down he wasn't such a terrible guy. His whole story ended up breaking my heart. I still wish that I got more of him. It is probably the reason that I used to write fanfiction featuring him when I was younger. Malfoy makes me think of my favorite character trope, the Tsundere. It's pretty much someone who is really harsh, but then opens up and can be really sweet on certain occasions or to certain people. They pop up a lot in anime and manga and I absolutely love them. Have you fallen down the TVTropes well yet? That sight can get you and suck you in. So many examples and so many tropes. I love it.
Ashley Dominique Yes! I love the angsty romance and that is the perfect recipe for it. My love of these different tropes started with Draco as well! I wish that we got more with him and it makes me so sad that JK chose to not develop him more in canon. It makes me even sadder that she doesn't understand the fans love for him. I love that trope as well! I didn't realize it had a name! Yes, that is where I found all of these names lol
Such a fun topic for a video! Love it, especially since my husband and I always talk about the tropes we're reading about. Thanks for adding some tropes to our conversation. :) One of my favorite tropes is the personification of Death like Terry Pratchett's Death or Death in "The Book Thief." Also, the tragic moment when a character has to sacrifice something that is ultimately defining of who they are (like Fflewddur Fflam in the Prydain novels). So so sad!
Thoughts on Tomes Yeah, it isn't very common. I'm actually going to do a video on different personifications of death in the next few weeks. It should be fun. :)
Idk if you have read these or not but if you're into parallel worlds you should give the His Dark Materials trilogy a try. I know they're not for everyone and some people can find their message heavy handed but they're still some of my all time favorite books with fantastically flawed protagonists, and yes, lots and lots of parallel worlds. A lot of people read the Golden Compass and then never continue but I think it's really worth it--the universe(s) and characters expand so much.
Ahh, when you were talking about the experienced protagonist I immediately thought of Kelsier and then when you mentioned him I literally jumped in my chair and went "YEEES." And yes, beliggerent sexual tension/'hate to love you'-couples are THE BEST. Especially when they bicker a lot and then only every now and then you get a glimpse of how they secretly care about each other. Another one of my FAVOURITE things in fiction is a platonic variation of this, usually between a child and a parental figure, where the older person is like UGH DON'T LEAVE ME WITH THIS STUPID CHILD and then secretly starts to care about them, or the other way around like with Vin and Kelsier. IT HURTS MY SOUL IN THE BEST OF WAYS.
nokiddingbrainless Kelsier is perfection. Everything about Kelsier. Yes I love the grumpy parental relationship as well! The bickering couples are AMAZING! I automatically love a couple when that happens.
Kelsier is everything. I'm currently reading The Well of Ascension and I have SO MANY KELSIER FEELINGS. I can't wait to read ALL of the other books you recommend in this!
I can say without a doubt that I completely agree with the last two tropes you've metioned. I especially loe the hate-to-love relationships, and sometimes preffer the fanfics that make it better than canon ( *caugh* Dramione *caugh* ) Like you said, morally gray characters are really amazing to read about, so the anti-hero/anti-villian trope is one of my favourites as well. I can't actually think of any other tropes that I like that you haven't mentioned, so if they do come to mind later on, I'll make sure to comment here again :) As per usual, I loved the video! (Also: that lipstick!)
I loved this video, you had really thoughtful responses! I just finished the 'Shatter Me' series and I totally agree with the shipping characters who started off hating each other *cough* Warnette *cough*
TwoPaperGirls Warnette is really perfection. Hate to love couple, with an anti-hero/anti-villain as part of the couple, with a slow burn romance that takes 3 books. It's really my perfect ship.
Hate to love would be on my list too! Most of my OTPs start that way and it's definitely my favorite relationship dynamic. Halfway through Falling Kingdoms and there's so much going on that I'm like wait a minute who is allied to who, what quest is this character on, what is happening oh my god. It's awesome though and I'm loving it so far. I didn't realize anti-villains were a thing, but I'm into those too. You know, they start off all dark and twisty and then you realize that they're actually not all bad. I don't like flat characters either even though the more complex ones usually put me through the wringer and my feels get all over everything. My best friend to me yesterday that you're lipstick game is hella strong. And I was like YEAH IT IS. Thought you should know. :)
***** YAY! So glad you are loving Falling Kingdoms! There are definitely so many hate to love ships in there and it gives me life. I didn't know they were a thing like anti-heroes either! But I'm so glad I have a name now to use for them. AW! Thank you! :)))
At first I was like...what the heck is a trope!? and Now I understand. I have been enlightened lol. And I absolutely love all the tropes that you do and it's opening my eyes to the things that I see so often in the novels that I read..and if I like them and if I don't....MY HORIZONS HAVE EXPANDED.
If you like the "blank Israel" trope, I suggest you check out The Looking Glass Wars trilogy by Frank Beddor. I read it when I was in high school about five years ago and it is probably one of my favorite YA series ever. Strong female lead, interesting twist/come to life of Alice in Wonderland, well-paced romance, and the action is fantastic!
I don't tend to like the "rivals to lovers" trope very much because of how often it's screwed up, but I can certainly see why it's attractive. I just like to see the characters that have more chemistry be together.
Miera from Snow Like Ashes was already such a badass before you met her! I loved that about her character. She has become one of my new top girl characters! A Darker Shade of Magic is perfect for alternate universes!!! Just read that and freaking LOVED it. Anguished requited love, Alex Lightwood & Magnus Bane
One of my favourites is the ___ is real. I love to see the different ways authors believe our society would shift to accommodate the challenge to their accepted reality. One of my favourite series, the Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn, deals with this a lot.
yes to the hate-to-love characters!! like shazi and khalid in the wrath and the dawn. just recently read that book and they're still on my mind. have your read it yet?
ChelleyReads I haven't!! I don't own it yet. My birthday is coming and it's ranked highest on my wishlist so I think I will get it. Fingers crossed. I figured there was a hate to love romance in there and I CANNOT WAIT!
Have you read Fair Coin by E.C. Meyers? It's a parallel universe book and it's very underrated! I liked it but I've never heard anyone on booktube talk about it. I love all these tropes too, for the same reasons you say. I'm pretty much ok with any trope because they can all be done well. The anti hero and the anti villain are always my favorite characters to read about.
Between Chapters I will definitely have to check that one out! I feel the same way. Even tropes that are "overdone" can be done well so that I'll enjoy them.
Since you mentioned alternate universes, I just picked up a book today called Dissonance by Erica O'Rourke that deals with that. Haven't read it yet, but thought you might want to check it out as well :)
have you read The Rifter, by Ginn Hale? Very diverse (mostly sexuality but not exclusively) + parallel universe! The first book is very small and kinda slow, but once things pick up, it's to die for.
I often like coming of age stories, and stories that switch narrators (if done correctly). I prefer like two narrators not 4 or 5. It's almost like switching between 2 books :)
Confab with Abs I like multiple POVs as well, although I tend to like having a lot of them. Probably because of all the fantasy I read, since it tends to be so common in those.
Hate to love relationships in our house hold are affectionately called " I hate you, well I hate you , let's make out.". Also I'll take a good Dexter,Hannibal character over a hero any day
ooo if you like alternate worlds you should pick up Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini. It's got an alternate world where witches are real and they influence modern society. I love that book.
Great vid as always, I agree with you. But I also love gender intrigue, if that's what it's called. You know, then a girl dresses up as a boy, or the other way around (which is not so often, does anybody have any suggestions?). Can think of only one book in particular now (Terry Pratchett - Monstrous Regiment), but I've watched a lot of movies and Korean dramas, read some manga/manhwa with such a plot and I adore it. If anybody has any suggestions on this one, please, do tell.
RoseBooks Yes! I love that as well! I've seen the girl dressed up as a boy more often. Actually, the book I just read (Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman) has this trope. I can't think of any with a boy dressed as a girl though.
Thoughts on Tomes oh, I'm pretty interested in Vengeance Road, so I hope I'll be reading it soon. Yeah, it is rear. I know only two anime(s?) and that's it. No books, unfortunately. I think it could be fun, though!
Bonnie and damons friend that she falls in love with while trying to find a cure. i cant remember his name but he's so FINE! I loved their relationship and also bonnie is the baddest witch in all the land, she literally holds the show together. SHES MA FAVE^-^
Tate Accent By time you got to the hate-to-love trope, you'd have seen that I was holding up books for every trope. If you consider couples spoilers, you should have muted, skipped, or clicked out of the video. I did a whole video on spoilers and avoiding spoilers here: ua-cam.com/video/bkDpPJICU6s/v-deo.html
Sorry if I offended you! I didn't mean to imply that you did anything wrong in talking about them! I assure you, it is not your fault. I was only grumbling for two reasons: I was tired, like really, really tired and was planning on reading Unravel Me next! Once again, sorry if I offended you.
I LOVE Darcy's first proclamation of love to Elizabeth. It's amazing. He manages to insult her and compliment her all at the same time!
Fred Weasley Died Laughing YES! Ugh it's so perfect. And I really love how it was adapted in the 2005 movie... ugh.. so many feelings.
Zuko has some of the BEST character development of any show I've ever watched.
EVER!
***** I'm the same way. If they are too "good", I just don't believe them and find them boring. Humans are not that one dimensional.
My favorite trope is also the anti hero/anti villain trope! Those are always my favorite characters in anything I read because they're just so fascinating!! Also of course, like you said, the anguished declarations of love. I live for that.
A Clockwork Reader The morally grey character is the best. I like my characters to have dimension, otherwise I get bored.
The enemies/rival to lovers trope is my favorite as well, more because they do fight and they do seem like they treat each other seriously and are on even ground (the take give as good as they take) and that to me kinda makes it more appealing than the 'senpai notice me' trope because in that one it just seems like a power imbalance and also you KNOW they're going to have a fight over nothing and you dread it, where in the enemies/rival to lovers they're already fighting so you get excited for when they start developing feelings for one and another.

enemies to lovers is the BEST
Rachel Lee *coughs loudly* klance and kagehina
I need more books with this trope dear GOD
I like the Experienced Protagonist trope too! I never thought about that, but I totally like it! I love the anguished profession of love, also. Katsa + Po forever.

amberinoface Yes! I can never buy instalove. But the slow burn romance, I totally understand.
Omg, yes, I love the hate to love couple! I have so many OTPs that have started off hating each other but end up falling in love. :)
sandyreadsalot I think every ship I've ever shipped has started this way lol
You had some really awesome responses! The Hate to Love troupe is always so much fun! Alternate universes are always so intriguing to me. Anti-hero/villian trope is my ALL TIME FAVORITE, I love those kinds of characters so so SO much!
vintagebibliophile Thank you :)) So many people love the anti-hero. Give me a complicated character any day.
YES to the alternate universe thing. I love those. So much possibility. :)
books and pieces Yes! It's so fun!
Love how clearly you express your thoughts...you are so well spoken and I look forward to all you top five Wednesday's😀
Danielle Roz Aw thank you so much!
Aria und Perry are SUCH an underrated OTP. I literally freaked out when you mentioned them! Their relationship was simply sooo well done.
I love the hate-to-love couples too and the bestfriend-to-love couples. I totally agree with the grey character thing, It makes the them more interesting.

my favorite hate to love relationship is Lily and James from Harry Potter. Always always always them.
Yes to Anne and Gilbert.
Golden trios. They give me such joy. I always end up shipping them, but I absolutely love them. Like, Harry, Ron, and Hermione? Luke, Han, and Leia? Sticky, Reynie, and Kate? Oh my God. Love. It.
The love-hate relationships will be the end of me. I love them so much!
bookishrose Seriously, they bring me physical pain. I love it.
I've just watched this after watching your most hated tropes video and I swear we have the exact same loves and hates! Especially yes to the 'hate to love' couple - I'm going to blame that on falling in love with Darcy at a very young age! And the anti-hero/anti-villain - by far my favourite types of characters!
Littleloezie D I've been wanting to read Cruel Beauty for a while now and knowing that trope is in it makes it even higher on my TBR!
I love Hate-love and angsty confessions too!!~~
All the ones you discussed are pretty much all of my favorites too. But I also really love a good love triangle...like Jack, Evie, and Aric from the Arcana Chronicles!
Amy Bucelewicz I do love a well done love triangle. I've been hearing things about that series lately so I will have to check it out.
Like you, I adore hate-to-love relationships. I don't know why because i literally haven't seen it once in real life LOL

KELSIER. I could cry forever about him.
Rachel Taylor I'm still crying. I will never not be crying over my love for him. We can cry together.
complex characters like the darkling make me happy ^_^. a favorite trope of mine is groups of characters! i love books with a group of close friends
***** Yes! I love a large cast of characters. The large cast in the Grisha trilogy and The Night Circus are some of my favorites.

I can say without a doubt that I completely agree with the last two tropes you've metioned. I especially loe the hate-to-love relationships, and sometimes preffer the fanfics that make it better than canon ( *caugh* Dramione *caugh* )
Like you said, morally gray characters are really amazing to read about, so the anti-hero/anti-villian trope is one of my favourites as well.
I can't actually think of any other tropes that I like that you haven't mentioned, so if they do come to mind later on, I'll make sure to comment here again :)
As per usual, I loved the video!
(Also: that lipstick!)
Theo Potterhead YES! Dramione is where it all started and why I love those couples to this day.
Thank you :)
I love black is real so good just so fun and makes you believe it really could be true well at least while to our reading lol
I LOOOOVEEEE alternate universes!!! And how in heck do you always rock those lipsticks?? Haha 😍
bookishbirthright Haha practice! Anyone can rock a hot pink lipstick ;)
AW! Thank you! :)))
love this video! I agreed with everything! ahhh i just feel like rereading everything.
***** Yay! There are soooo many tropes. Check out TVtropes.com. There are thousands... It's a little insane.
Good video! But also, your lipstick is AMAZING!
+Samantha Burns Thank you :)))
Jonathan Owens I will definitely have to check that out. Thanks!
I don't tend to like the "rivals to lovers" trope very much because of how often it's screwed up, but I can certainly see why it's attractive. I just like to see the characters that have more chemistry be together.
See, I see the passion between rivals as good chemistry usually lol
Great video Sam, I loved your top 5. Made me realize I left out some good ones. My 4&1 is the same as your 5&2 :)
Diary of A Fangirl Thank you! Haha we have great taste in tropes :)
I agree :)
Meagan Precourt I love Miera as well! I instantly loved her as soon as I started reading that book.
You are absolutely going to love The Darkling :)
For some reason I don't know if it's a trope but like I really like books with a lot of royalty in it like the selection or red queen.
Did anyone else think of drarry for the love/hate relationship hA 😂
or dramione, oh god hyped childhood fantasized ships coming to my mind! loll..
PREACH!!! Loved your video :)
One of my favourites is the ___ is real. I love to see the different ways authors believe our society would shift to accommodate the challenge to their accepted reality. One of my favourite series, the Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn, deals with this a lot.
FaeryBookish I will have to look into that series!
yes to the hate-to-love characters!! like shazi and khalid in the wrath and the dawn. just recently read that book and they're still on my mind. have your read it yet?
Like for Kelsier!
Since you mentioned alternate universes, I just picked up a book today called Dissonance by Erica O'Rourke that deals with that. Haven't read it yet, but thought you might want to check it out as well :)
LuhvleeLexx Thank you for the recommendation!
I would like to see antagonists slowly becoming friends of the protagonist and people who earn their trust through moral experience. Any suggestions?
have you read The Rifter, by Ginn Hale? Very diverse (mostly sexuality but not exclusively) + parallel universe! The first book is very small and kinda slow, but once things pick up, it's to die for.
you should read Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. the characters are grey and start by hating each other.
Since you like alternate universes, what do you think things like Rick and Morty? Also, anti-heroes are awesome.
Thoughts on Tomes Totally fair! I suppose it depends on who is narrating and how interested I am in their character.
You should check out Will of Hope if you love parallel worlds! :)
+Yasmin Fazli Thanks for the recommendation!
of course!
"motivated by good things like (...) and patriotism".
Like patriotism was a good thing :P
Love your video! I love pretty much the same as you.
Jessica Bolton Thank you :)
Hate to love relationships in our house hold are affectionately called " I hate you, well I hate you , let's make out.". Also I'll take a good Dexter,Hannibal character over a hero any day
catseye6773 Haha perfect name for them :)
Totally had no idea what a trope was until now.... XD
Jay G Glad this topic could help!
ooo if you like alternate worlds you should pick up Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini. It's got an alternate world where witches are real and they influence modern society. I love that book.
I actually have that one on my shelf!
eep!
I could only think of one trope I like, alternate universe tropes. A lot of them I think are way over used :/
fuzzydragons A lot of them are overdone, but when they are done well, it doesn't matter to me.
I know you ship Dramonie and I just wanted to let you know that I found the perfect song for the ship. Haunted by Taylor Swift
Harry Potter Equals Life 123 There are so many songs that are perfect for that ship. I can basically twist any angsty song into a Dramione song :)))
Bonnie and damons friend that she falls in love with while trying to find a cure. i cant remember his name but he's so FINE! I loved their relationship and also bonnie is the baddest witch in all the land, she literally holds the show together. SHES MA FAVE^-^
Original Witch enzo? the books are very good btw
What? "The bad boy" didn't made the list?? ;)
Craxy Reads "anti-hero" and "anti-villain" counts as bad boys for me :)
Thoughts on Tomes Okay. I thought it deserved it's own point, hehe :)
Seriously, you need to watch k-dramas :P
tpstps85 I really do lol
I have to disagree on Darcy; honestly that made me want to punch him in the face XD
Spoilers :( In the hate to love one.... NOOOOOOOOOO
I fucking hate it
