That 3rd goal by Sakic was the sexiest wrist shot I've ever seen. Broduer was like, "wtf just happened????"
And keep in mind Broduer is a top 10 goalie of all time too.
Sakic had the dirtiest wrist shot ever.

SAKIC DIDN'T EVEN LIFT IT OVER HIS HEAD, HE GAVE IT RIGHT TO RAY BOURQUE, WHO KISSES THE CUP, AND THE CROWD AT THE PEPSI CENTER EXPLODES!!!! TEARS COMING DOWN THE EYES OF RAY BOURQUE! Maybe I make this team too much of a personality trait and I really shouldn’t but like I love this team. Everytime we lost I came back to this magical moment in the year 2001. Honestly that era was the most boring era in the sport's history. Most of the games were low-scoring, trap-dominated, clutch-and-grab garbage and there were only like 4 teams capable of winning the Cup. Also the rules sucked. You would hook and pull people down no problem, but god forbid you passed the puck over 2 lines. It's a shame that so many of the greats were forced to play with that awful strategy and rules. 2005-06 was the beginning of something wonderful. More goals, more speed and skill, more parity thanks to the salary cap, and no more clutch-and-grab BS.

When I was little, my dad and I were walking through the Pepsi Center before a midday weekend game. We were picking up our tickets at will call. I turned a corner and ran into a guy in a suit, I just said sorry. My dad stopped in his tracks, said "Hey Pierre." You can tell, simply by the success CO had while he was GM, he was one of the greatest of all time. If not the best at picking up big names.

Sad part is, they were SO freaking close to a bunch more.
1997 Flyers? Would have crushed them.
1999 Sabres? Would have wiped the floor with them.
2002 Hurricanes? Puhleeze....the 1996 Finals would have looked competitive by comparison.
The 2000 Devils were the only team that would have had a shot against the 1996-2002 Avs...the Avs would have wiped the floor with the 1998 Capitals as well, but I'm only counting the times they lost in the WCF to the Stars or the Wings. The "just one step short" years.
Could have easily been 5 cups in 7 years.

Such an ecstatic moment for Boston fans. In 2001 it had been 15 years since Boston had won a sports championship so we were starving. Seeing Ray Bourque hoist that Cup made it feel as much a Boston championship as a Denver one. Bourque brought the Stanley Cup to Boston a week or so later, and thousands of fans showed up to celebrate. It seemed to renew a sense of optimism in the city which our other teams fed off of. The Patriots won the Super Bowl that following February, then the Red Sox broke the Curse in 2004. From then on, our teams began to have a lot of success which all seemed to start with this one moment.

There was so many moments of that series that were incredible. Stephan Yelle and his overtime goal against the blues. Going game 7 against the kings and coming out as winners. And this.

Don't know if it's Thorne's call compared to Emrick sounding like he was going to fall asleep, or the fact that Vancouver's play completely cheapened the feel of winning, or what, but this moment is my favorite in the NHL.

It's amazing that the second after Sakic got the Cup in his hands he IMMEDIATELY gave it to Bourque, what an unselfish move by one of the games greatest players!

Everything was perfect. Facing the defending champs, how Sakic immediately turns and hands it off, and the best part "and after 22 years Raymond bourque!"

This is why I as a Wings fan have a lot of respect for the Aves. Out side of the wings players and Steve Yzerman I have never seen a team with so much class.

This is probably one of the best cup matchup we got. 2 of some of the best goalies in nhl history facing off and 2 of the best teams of the late 90s and early 2000s

That second goal... You gotta know Sakic, with the greatest wrister in history, didn't just shoot it flat on the ice looking for a goal, you can see his eyes in the replay. That was a tape to tape pass off Brodeur right to Tanguay

Sakic is bar none one of the most skilled, intelligent, classy hockey players ever. He did so much for this franchise, just raising his number in the rafters won't be enough. Then there's St. Patrick. 'Nuff said.
There may be a different type of skill/movement in hockey today, but if you watch highlights from this and highlights from game 7 of this years series w/out prejudice, I guarantee you will like these better.

  • @mitchconn

That was a great moment! That shows you how much people like and respect Ray Bourque. Sakic immediately hand the Cup to him because he deserved to hold it over his head. If not for the tradition of the Captain accepting the Cup, Bourque would have been at the table with Bettman.
