i remember hearing a theory that the voice ‘actures’ are actually just the same person with the audio being pitched/edited in some way. theres a nightcore version of hitoshi san singing hips dont lie and someone pointed out how his voice seemed rather feminine when pitched up

    • @Crunchybagels
      @Crunchybagels  8 днів тому +80

ive heard that theory and found it unconvincing :P it seems very technical not only for the time but especially for yoli, who, while deliberately doesnt fix her animation and audio errors, nonetheless also doesnt seem to be technically proficient. this clashes with how bloody *good* the pitch shifting would have to be to sound so realistic. its just a lotta hoops to jump through compared to the easier theory of "there are multiple VAs". for comparison, mayonakas hitoshi VA is *actually* a womans voice pitch shifted, and its immediately obvious

@@Crunchybagels it's something even a total amateur could do in like 2 minutes in audacity (which has been around for like, 20 years), if you pitch hitoshi's voice up a tad it's a lot more obvious it's just yoli chan pitching her voice down (compare and contrast with other characters, in particular koneko chan and vet sama). i think hitoshi sounding relatively convincing could be either a stroke of dumb luck or actual skill, but i'm inclined to lean towards the former. haven't tested this out with bokutachi san but i think it is most likely everyone is voiced by yoli chan and maybe a friend of hers (though who this could be remains a mystery)

The ms paint artstyle is a decoy only for the troll element and it is obvious in the later episodes. You can see that for exactly one frame that the show actually using layers 🤣. In the final episode they even use visual effects for Raku's nightmare.
SoapOpera knew exactly what she was doing and it is glorious.

did not expect a deep dive into fanime more or less! i was kind of a part of that community and yeah, it was basically a bunch of 9-16 year olds drawing in ms paint and painstakingly editing stuff together in windows movie maker. people were uh. very not nice about it! even knowing these were children. we'd often get trolled by 4chan and sent gore and porn :') it sucked. but then sometimes either they or we ourselves would make parody stuff. if you haven't already (and if it still exists) definitely check out Eternal and Illusions Dreams. Those were pretty much classic fanime, with Eternal being one of the most beloved at the time despite having like one and a half episodes or something.

Okay, so I got this video recommended 2 hours ago. I clicked on it thinking "This sounds funny, and I DO enjoy long videos about going increasingly deeper into a rabbit hole I had no interest in prior to watching". The more I watched, the more entertained I was by your explanations and slow (kinda quick, actually) descent into kawaii desu madness. I thought to myself that this video was great, and by the time I finished it, I would give a shallow attempt at comedy and leave a comment where I go "Uwaaah! Watashi very impressed by ur kawaii skills! Ver desu!!!!" and move on with my day.
But then, you did something interesting. You did something I could never be ready for after all the twists and turns of trolling section. You had the gall to make me feel things. The AUDACITY to leave words in this video that would peer into my very soul and ask me... "Don't you miss being cringe?" Not the exact wording obviously, but after you went deep into the fact that every single fanime you looked at in this video has passion and soul put into it despite its obvious (sometimes intentional) shortcomings, all I could think was... yeah. I don't necessarily miss my cringey phases back when I was a kid, but I miss being able to express myself. I envy these ms paint abominations in how they're able to exist without worrying about what others will think of them, or in some cases TRYING to get a rise out of people whilst still being unmistakably pure and true to their creator's selves.
You have caught me off guard in a video that I thought would be a silly goofy time where I can sit back, relax and laugh at "haha funny mspaint scribble looks bad" but you took this absurd premise and managed to make me think back on myself. No jokey one-off "kawaii desu" comment could ever reflect that.
I guess all I wanted to say is good fucking job lmao. Sorry for the world's largest word salad I puked up in here. I hope that, if anything, it shows just how much this video hit me.

I’m literally so glad that I was able to experience the early internet days where beginning artists created their own work and upload their stories online. Although the art and story plot lines can be confusing, I think it’s an important step for newer artists or animators to take the initiative and work on something they really enjoy. Eventually these artists improves their art and I always feel so happy and gets me motivated to do my own artwork.
Also, these videos screams NOSTALGIA as I also used to work with a friend to create storyboards like Nyan Neko sugar girls and other amazing creators.

watashi actually cried during this, nya. watashi is not joking when watashi says that - this is genuinely one of the best videos watashi has seen in months, maybe years. nya. when watashi started watching, watashi didnt know what to expect, but it certainly wasnt probably one of the most emotional and human stories that the internet has to offer. from the editing to the writing, from the subject, to the passion and dedication that it takes to make something like this, something so.. human. yet something that could only be possible on this wonderful yet kinda-scary entropy-filled plane of existence we call "the internet" i could make an entire five page essay on how this kinda-pretty-much-almost-two-hour video has impacted me so much in so little time, but that would probably exceed youtube's character limit, and this comment is already getting kind of long, so instead watashi is just going to stop typing, and start rewatching the video to see if watashi can spot any easter-eggs.. nyaa~

I love media that blurs the line between irony and reality, so Im so glad I stumbled upon this fantastic video. Although this sarcasm can sometimes become redundant, it’s still a great medium that has the potential to convey a lot of creative ideas. But as we see with the case of KawaiiSweetBerry, the problems with this type of comedy that has plagued the internet for years become apparent. When someone tries to break free of these ironic shackles, they are almost always met with hostility from their audiences, those who were previously in on the joke may continue to view these sincere efforts to create good content as just another joke or unusual, while the incessant rude comments just keep pouring in despite the honesty of the content merely due to the negative environment of some comment sections and how ridiculously apathetic some people can be on the internet. This 2 hours long documentary gives us a glimpse of how irony developed and evolved on the internet, people poking fun at communities they were already a part of, although not everyone got the joke. This eventually led to a scene overwhelmed with infinite layers of irony that makea browsing the internet feel like getting 50 layers of american cheese forced down your throat.
Sorry for the rant the main takeaway is just not to be mean to people just cuz anata is on the net and have no information about people's intent like a baka >:( that is so unkawai and very not desu nor sugoi.

Okay, wow, this video is crazy. Prefacing this by saying; I am a megafan of NNSG. I have made fanart (one of which is pretty high when you look up bokutachi-san and additionally has a speedpaint) and an au, I've written koneko/raku fic and it's been one of my favorite series and a hyperfixation that comes back every few years. This is probably the best video on Nyan Neko Sugar Girls by far. The research that went into this including things that I didn't know about and taking nnsg seriously and having knowledge about the series is just perfect lol. the discussion about fanime and the underlying themes of this video are all really great and make for like one of the few good nnsg videos lol. I'm rambling on but this is seriously a great video and makes me want to make my own fanime someday, no matter how poorly made and cringe :,)

kono douga was downright sugoi desu!!!
No ,but in all seriousness this was actually amazing and now I'm feeling weirdly inspired to just create something, even if it's bad or strange. I love this series and the effort you put into researching and talking about it was just so great to see. If I had access to digital art and animation as a child I 100% would've made an awful fanime. I used to make so much. I'd roleplay, trace anime and crudely color in manga panels. Now I can't help but to look at my own art and think "hmm, the color choices aren't very good" or "I should've chosen a better composition" and it honestly hurts to think of all the buried ideas that could have been something, but I never made because I was waiting to just magically get better at art, or writing, or whatever. The end of this video really did just bring me back in time to rping on the playground with friends I can no longer remember the faces of.
idk, its 1:00am and I think I'm rambling. But this video actually has me crying thinking about friends I lost contact with a decade ago. Goodnight my tomodachis, may you find the courage to create with childlike whimsy. Nya~ rawr

It’s crazy to think that nyan neko sugar girls was actually the masterwork of its genre. Like I always thought of it as just a funny meme but it actually encapsulated what the fanime genre was about while finding its own (albeit ironic) huge cultural spot in UA-cam history. So wild. This is why I say that no matter how popular or impactful you think your art will be, just make it. Don’t think about that. The world will decide that without you. Just make it. And release it so that freaks like video essayists have something to yap about for 2 hours (Seriously Though thank you for yapping!!!)
Also the dopamine hit I got when you mentioned two days in Moore Oklahoma!!! Great taste! Emp is a master of the video essay art form. He’s really special.

It's a lot like Mike and Melissa the show is both genuine and ironic over-escalation of it's absurdity makes it incredibly entertaining to watch "it's so bad it's good" It's honestly really common for early Newgrounds animators to make this stuff it's focusing more on story and plot than animation yet the animation has a unique style because of the animator.

I can't tell what is real anymore.
You kept insisting all these channels associated with nyan~ neko sugargirls were trolls and I kept yelling at my screen
    "ARE YOU _SURE_ THEY'RE TROLLS??"
I kept watching, remembering what it was like the be a preteen on the internet and making terrible videos that I hope never resurface, and while yes, i could believe a lot of it was potentially rage bait...
A lot of this stuff reads like the product of too much creativity without the naturally built talent to back it up.
The kind of thing that birthed hundreds of undertale AUs. The kind of thing that birthed Minecraft song parodies. The kind of thing that birthed Sonic and My Little Pony OCs. THE KIND OF THING THAT MADE MY UA-cam PROFILE ABOUT A ORANGE YOSHI NAMED HENRY.
I had my google plus role play group, these people had their fanime communities and the new generation will have something else.
Your readings of KawaiiSweetBerry's comments particularly convinced me that most of these people were passionate about what they were making and that they always were.

koneko-chan may be yoli-chan's real voice, if you listened to the chobits fandub it makes sense. if you speed up hitoshi-san and bokutachi-san's voice, (its more clear in the I Want It That Way and Hips Don't Lie covers) it sounds like koneko-chan. vet-sama also sounds like koneko-chan with a more horrible quality mic

@@Crunchybagels Oh, yeah, I was very present for the community at the time! Wolflover007 often interacted with ilovecorgis and xLushix/Jupimeow a lot...the latter of which I suppose must have deleted their first channel. But there was a larger community, too, that I remember! DarkKokiri was a Warrior Cats animator that animated Lushi in a video once, along with another UA-camr named Sunny (Sunstripe31) who's no longer around but I watched the hell out of, bluekyokitty was another popular one that's still around, though not animating anymore to my knowledge. Oh, AlliKatNya as well!

@@Crunchybagels ofc, honestly I've always wanted to do UA-cam, but one of the things that is stopping me, is that I started wanting to do UA-cam back when Let's Plays were popular, and where it was normal to have a thumbnail and incremement a number on the same thumbnail, and do minimal editing, just rambling. But each and every year, it feels like the barrier to entry is higher. I have no passion for video editing or filmography, I'm also a man of words, but nobody reads anymore and UA-camrs, even small ones, make longer and longer videos, with more and more research and more impressive video editing. Hence, that part towards the end of your video really resonated with me strongly. Authenticity and effort isn't rewarded anymore, unless that authenticity and effort is agreeable to the masses and to bots running our everyday lives.
