  • Catching a no heat call on Christmas Day. Merry Christmas!
The water that was coming out of unit caused the primary float switch to be activated. Thus, cutting the unit off/blank thermostat. Temperatures were below freezing during this Christmas weekend, causing a lot of units to cut off due to the condensate lines being frozen. If the water leaving the unit freezes on the outside of the house (due freezing temperatures), this BLOCKS water from ever leave the unit from the inside of the house .

I did the same on Christmas eve and Christmas day. The on-call tech is green and was swamped. I worked a ten hour day Christmas eve then was awakened at 12:10 Christmas morning to run a call. Got home at 2:30 A.M. Living the dream!

Condensation from a furnace? What the heck?

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they're also running a dehumidifier.

It's a high efficiency furnace. Burning natural gas efficiently creates water and carbon dioxide as a byproduct. The moisture in the combustion air also condenses and needs to be drained out. Here's the chemical equation for natural gas combustion: CH4 + 2 O2 + heat = CO2 + 2 H2O

Yes it was a 90% furnace that has a secondary heat exchanger which condensates water when the unit runs.

The water thats running out of the pvc tube where is it going to???

Usually with a setup like that there's a catch pan under the furnace with a separate drain that runs to the outside.

This unit is located in an attic and the pvc goes into a trap and then is gravity fed to outside and down the house (where it froze) which blocked the water from leaving the unit and thus tripped the primary float switch.
