I wear a lot of vintage, so here is a laundry hack:Add white distilled vinegar, about a cup, to your wash water. It helps to neutralize odors, fade yellow pit stains, AND keep HE washers clear of that funky "moist(?)" odor they can get!

My favorite fashion hack is to sew two buttons inside skirts 1 inch on each side of the seam on both sides. If I loose a few pounds and the skirt gets loose, then I use a hair elastic to bring the buttons together tightening the skirt.

OMG!!!! The shoe in the microwave really does work, just tried it on a pair of boots that I loved but pinched. Fit perfectly, I would say if you are going to try it 5 seconds at a time. That is what I did. Thanks, Karen and whomever the lovely person was that told you x

I’m totally doing that boot cutting hack! (I live in rural northern Maine where people don’t know “trends”, so they will certainly think I’ve lost my bloody mind!) 😂

I use to love wearing 4” heels! After having foot surgery I can’t go over 3”! If I see a pair shoes I like and the heel is too high, I have a cobbler cut them down to my desired height!! That’s a hack I use frequently!!

    My favorite hack:
To stop button down blouses from opening up and revealing too much in between the buttons I put double sided adhesive tape in that area. I use tape from wig supplies store which can also be applied to the skin to keep clothes in place. It won’t harm your skin or the fabric

Jewelry packing hack: I take a metal shower ring, open the clip, thread necklaces for the trip, then close clip. At destination, hang ring on hanger for easy view and selection, just open clip, minimal tangles. One for necklaces, one for bangles, one for rings, one for hoops and hasp earrings, one for hair bands, etc.

Karen for the small clutch/evening bag you can also use a pearl necklace as a handle the same way and just secure it with a couple baby pins under the flap crease. Also take long ribbons, tie onto each side of your flip flop straps and wrap around the ankles ballet style.

I found a beautiful beaded chiffon knee length skirt in an op shop. It was too tiny for me but I had to have it because the fabric was so beautiful. It now makes a stunning cape that I can wear over evening dresses. And I always get comments on it when I wear it. The only downside is I have to put it on over my head but it drapes beautifully over my shoulders. I've also been known to wear a woolly knit mini skirt as a scarf in the same way. Just pop it over your head!

I use brooches to decorate bags, especially plain fabric bags. Such a cheap easy way to change the look of a bag, from day to night. I also love to wear brooches pinned into a bun or chignon, for a romantic and glamorous evening updo.

I like buttoning my over-sized dress shirts off kilter and tucking in the base - it gives them an interesting deconstructed silhouette.

if you are worried about nails/metal in shoes, the oven works well too, just put the oven on the lowest temperature. Also putting them in direct sunlight on a hot summer day will work. Another tip for oil stains is to spot-treat the area with dishwashing liquid. I like dawn the best. Dishwashing liquid is designed to break up oil on our plates, so it makes sense that it would work on clothes!

These are great tips! Here's one: if you get ink on clothes, spray hair spray on the ink spot. The ink stain will start to dissolve. If the stain is stubborn, spray more and rub it in until the ink is gone. Then wash as normal.

Great tips Karen! I sew a slender ribbon around the inside band of my hats, leaving enough on each end to gather and tie so that it will fit my head perfectly. More expensive hats come with this feature, but many cheaper ones don’t.

OMG. Karen I just had to stop your video for a sec to write this comment: knotting a dress is just such a groundbreaking idea!!! I’m short so it might allow me to wear ‘too long’ maxi dresses. Quite often I just don’t buy them because I’m too lazy to take them to seamstress

Changing the buttons are a cheap and easy way to transform a garment. Often just by adding some nicer buttons to a high street find, it instantly looks more expensive. You can reuse the same buttons, always cut them off when you're throwing the item away. Even mismatched buttons can look great too, a cheap way to customise a garment.

Keep a spray bottle of Dawn dishwashing liquid and white vinegar (about 50/50) to spray on stains on clothes, etc.. It works on multiple stains around the house, too, but is amazing on clothes, including oil stains. Try it on those red boots:)

I have the same red snake skin boots I bought in Mexico 15 years ago, and I love them, I use coconut oil to make the snakeskin look beautiful and bring out the red. You can also have them died red to make them look new if it's faded. I put the silver tips on the front and back also. I think I will have my shoe man cut them for me , but thanks for the great idea 😉

Hack: To bring in a too boxy top or to add interest...take an elastic band for your hair. Twist fabric from the inside of the sweater/skirt. Secure the twisted fabric with the elastic and adjust by tugging on it from either side. It can create a geometry that is interesting and pull in some of the excess fabric. The knot (gathered material) in on the inside of the piece...and cannot be seen. A little experimenting with different fabrics, locations for the knot, and how much fabric is gathered will offer different looks.

HI Karen, I love your video's and you are so fabulous. I had the girls in Zara's subscribing to your video's the other day. Anyway I just recently got the tailor to cut a split on the outside part of the seam on a pair of wide leg denims. The split is about 12 inches. It cost $10 dollars. The tailor used the same thread as the jeans (like an orange color). They look great and I get a lot of compliments. I also had a knee length lace dress that never sat right on my person ...altered with two side slits up to my waist. I wear it as a top over jeans or leggings. I tend to like an outer layer piece so I wear button down dresses as a lightweight topper with a belt bag or a harness belt... I took the fur collar off a vintage coat and had the tailor sew ribbon on either side. I tie it as a scarf and a great addition to sleeveless vests or coats...just a recent few of mine...xxoxoxoox

Chuck full of great ideas! BTW, flour works just as well as baby powder if you don't want the scent for clothes or leather stained with oil. I used it on a tan leather bag and the stain disappeared in a couple of days. It was a miracle! Works also on stains left on leather by old price stickers. Anyway, thanks a bunch for the excellent tips :)

One season I bought a two-piece suit at a men’s store, and had it tailored for me (always free when you buy a suit!). But I discovered a brilliant product: a covered stick of chalk for rubbing on any oil stains! Fit in my small purse, and was a great help on more occasions than should have been!

I just discovered knotting my clothes this past year. Knotting tops at the waist knotting dresses at the waist, or hem, & maxi's, etc. Totally changes the look, it's so great! I have also been a clothes roller for years, because you can store way more that way. I do this with light sweaters & tops. yoga's & leggings. Also, one thing I have done for years, if you keep a sizable wardrobe is to keep like colors together with tops sleeveless down to long sleeve. It keeps things easy to find. ; )

Large scarfs (from thin silk ones to thick and woolly) make great jacket replacements. Easy to take along in a bag und you have something to throw over your shoulders and arms in airconditoned buildings or in the evening. You can find one to fit almost every style at the fraction of a cost of a conventional outer garment.
I also use white summerweight ones on hot days for extra sun protection (or when I don’t want to slather sticky sunscreen on my arms and shoulders on the way to a business appointments.

That ribbon hack saved me! I saw it on your IG stories last week (or whenever it was), and I decided to do it for a bodysuit I'd bought from Zara years back. I bought it too large and rather than return it (because they didn't have the size down and I really liked the stripes pattern) I kept it. Keeping it, though, meant I didn't wear it all that often because it would fall too far down (and whereas you have so-called "light switches," Karen, I have bocce balls lol) and show far more than I wanted showing.
I recently cut the straps and tied them higher then went to JoAnn's and bought navy silk ribbons to add to it.

So I’ve been watching you talk about the boots for a while now and I finally took the risk! Cut my old Stetsons and I was really scared! Loved the look but when I put them on they began to tear where it’s stitched to the piping! I would suggest to anyone that they quickly stitch the tops tight around the piping before wearing so they don’t rip apart like mine are😢. Will attempt to fix myself but I think I’m off to the cobbler for a scolding!

Sometimes you can use extra long necklaces as belts for that Chanel vibe and if you are a bit of an edgy chic also belts as necklaces. Genius Karen! I almost can't stand the genius. I've taken to shoes with scissors myself, to grand effect. I'm so going to try the microwave shoe trick, I bought shoe stretchers and stretched a pair of boots a whole size up!
Not really a hack but people forget about hemming tape! Just fold your hem and iron to a new length. Shout out to my short legged peeps.

Can't remember where I heard this, but I did do it to stretch my shoes.
Take two plastic sandwich bags with a zip lock top and fill half way with water. Zip it all the way and place a bag in each shoe. The bag of water should fill your shoe to at least the ankle part or higher. Put the shoes in a large bag tied loosely and put the bag in your FREEZER! Make sure your shoes are standing upright.
Let freeze completely(two days, check on them). The shoes will expand as the water freezes to ice and forces the shoes to stretch. Take shoes out of the bag and allow the ice to melt. VOILA!!!!

Fantastic style hacks! Thanks Karen, I’ll definitely try the long gipsy skirt as a dress and maybe add ribbons as straps and won’t pass up on some nice designer shoes because of the colour. Wish I’d known about the microwaving the shoes hack before I’d returned some shoes to yoox this morning😱

I twist necklaces together and fasten with a special clip, (you can buy on jewellery supply shops or eBay). it's such an easy way to be creative without having to remake the necklaces.
