  • Welcome to this relaxed colour & chat with a mini-tutorial thrown in for good measure. Today we are using FC polychromos pencils and some Zest-it blending medium to create a yellow pine-style finish to the bookcase shelves in Colin Thompson's Colouring Book. We follow on with some rambling as I finish the page. Chat includes yum yums, food in general and things people don't own any more.

I love this picture. I have been curious about this book so it has been great watching someone coloring in it. I don't think you talk too much. You always have something interesting to say.

Double yes on the talking, sometimes I would rather hear someone talk than listen to music that doesn't fit my mood at the time! Please keep talking - and now I REALLY want this book! Gem don't change a thing and thank you for sharing your knowledge! 😂💗

thank you for showing your technique with the colorless blender on Polychromos pencils! I just tried it out and it works well! I tried watersoluble media as inktense pencils and blocks and Albrecht Dürer watercolourpencils and they all work quite well. No bleeding through and not much buckling or none at all if you work on small areas and dont use too much water😊

Gem the pages look awesome. You've probably realized by now but you missed a wood section in the last square. Just above the computer. Lol. Understandable in the excitement of finishing such a project.
I enjoy your channel very much and look forward to sharing the time with you. Yes. Keep talking. Love it. Thank for sharing.

Eagle eye, Karen! I didn’t notice it for about three days 😂 I’ve filled it in now though. It’s so easy to miss bits in this book!

This book is a bit overwhelming, amazing and so much fun. I've been busy on the doors page with my Inktense Pencils and I find it soooooo addictive.
You did a great job and thank you for showing how to colour the wood.

It Looks amazing! I've laughed out loud at the book titles a few times.
I remember my first computer was a chunky huge thing from Radio rentals and I had a well used copy of Encarta, and a healthy collection of floppy disks. Showing my age but, I also remember using an old Amstrad that used the paper disks and we used to have to play Go West, an old simulation where you have to plan out the provisions of some prospectors heading west, and people would come down with dysentery and such on the way and you'd loose them if you didn't pack enough medicine. Oh how far gaming has come.
We Still get the occasional Phone Directory, the Thompson Local. We could be considered old fashioned, we still have a VHS and a few old videos we refuse to let go of, also an old tape recorder, and up until recently we still used an old bone handled butter knife.
My brother in law is american and when he found out some of the stuff we had and were using was from like back in the 60's because it belonged to a gran or an aunt he made a big joke about us using antiques to which we told him that over here it has to be over 100 years to be considered antique, otherwise its just second hand haha.

I really like the pine color combo. You're right about it being a very toothy paper.
I tried both Prisma (wax) and Brutfuners (oil) and I didn't notice any difference in the coverage. I'm probably going to have to use a blending stick to smooth everything out in the end.

I always print a month-to-view calendar from calendarlabs every year and leave it on the table where I can see appointments at a glance. There are no computers in that room so it's handy having it there.

Sassy Gem: I am so satisfied! *giggle*
*shake fist at wood grain* I shall defeat you my nemesis! Thanks for a fairly simple way to tackle wood grain! There is so much of it out there!
I love this book but Amazon only has it in stock sometimes and the shipping on, last time I checked was like 12 dollars. [edit: Just checked again and its 31 for the book and 24 shipping] So I am waiting for a more reasonable shipping arrangement to get it.
I want a coloring book just full of small boxes of things to color. Things you can sit down and do in a shot period of time. That is how I color anyway. I will sit down and color for like 15-20 minutes then walk away.

What a cool coloring. Looks great. I have to say this, I just can't help myself. Whoever asked,"why do you talk so much in your video's?" REALLY? Like what are you supposed to be silent? What kind of stupid question is that? It's not like you talk too much. But, how are you going to teach us anything? Plus it's your channel you should be doing what-ever you want. I'm just in amazement that anyone would say that to you. Plus, how rude. I usually would never say any question was stupid, I don't care for that word, but I don't know what else to call it. So I'm sorry I used that word, but... REALLY? Anyway, thanks for all the good advise & please talk, talk, & talk some more. LOL TYFS

This is my third comment. Sorry for spamming, I have been commenting while still watching this video... I have used Inktense in this book and also some watercolors. It's not the best paper for water soluble media, because while it's thick and doesn't warp too much, the surface of the paper starts kind of tearing if you try brushing it too much while it's still wet. I think Inktense pencils with water brush worked the best. However, these pictures look amazing when colored with water soluble media, so if you go carefully, it's worth it. I'm going to send you a pic via FB, because I can't do it here.

Hello, I haven't don't it yet but I have seen some use watercolor ground and gesso in coloring books so they can use watercolor or markers (eats markers unless sanded) I'm sorry I don't remember who I've seen do it but their work looked good doing it that way.

    • @TheColourCave

Ive used water based products in my copy of this great book, as with all paper not water color treated, a light hand minimal water and drying between layers will give you great results. Check out Bunny Designs channel, she has videos painting in this book, which is who enabled me to purchase mine😂😂Enjoy your channel so much, and I never get tired of listening to you talk!👍👍

Would you tell a guest in your home that they were talking too much? I don’t think so. The value of your video conversations is only superseded by the value of the knowledge you impart.
OMG, back in my day not only were the computers that ridiculously gross beige/cream/whatever color but so was the monitor - which itself was the size of a large microwave oven.
My approach to the double spread Wonder Room pages in Ivy and the Inky Butterfly was the same - one object at a time. Only problem was I don’t have any WIPs except the one I’m working on so nothing else got accomplished until I finished those pages.
