I live in Nebraska and the salt absolutely ate through mine. As a mechanic i could have done it without this video but watching this will make it a million times easier
Dude you fucking rock, watched your video from beginning to end, love that you mentioned every bolt size and that “cheers guys” because you know what you are doing my friend
Thank you so much for this video. I bought my '08 a little over a year ago, since my 16 year old Alero had kicked the bucket (16 years, lol, who would've thought!). First oil change I got, my mechanic pulled me aside to show me the subframe. It wasn't as bad as the one you showed. It was bought from an auction, so they had to do a lot of patch work to bring it up to safety standards. But there was rust, he told me not to hang onto it for longer than a couple of years. Thing is, the engine had very low mileage. Not even 45,000 miles on it (I'm guessing they did an engine swap). I don't want to get rid of it because of a part that can be replaced. Plus my fellow co-worker is an unlicensed driveway mechanic, and I know he wants my money. :) Thank you so much for this video. If you have a paypal, let me know what it is. Your advice is potentially saving me thousands of dollars.
Great video!! After watching your video, my son and I replaced this sub-frame on my grandson’s 2012 Caliber. It was completely rusted/rotted out. About 3 hours to remove the original and 2.5 hours to install the new one. We run a tap through all threaded holes to make sure the threads were clean and the new bolts would turn in easily. Thank you for the detailed video. Made the job much easier.
Hello, finally after watching your video, I was able to replace my sub-frame on my dodge caliber 2008, I want to thank you for taking the time in making this instructional video on how to do this job. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work. Take care and God bless.
TheXscorpius I was told my son sub frame on his 2008 Dodge Caliber needs replacing...a few other things hub and struts $1800 that sounds excessive just put a newer engine in it
Saved me 100 less headaches Simply done, Simply explained. BIG PLUS calling out metric sizes. Big plus!..Camera work was great, you could actually follow! We need more of this nature, soon. Good luck with the bus. Peace and THANK YOU!
It took two of us about 6 hours to change this part out on a 2007 Dodge Caliber. Your video was very helpful during the process but we never want to do one of these jobs again:)
Great video Rick...you really know what you're doing! I don't reckon that your neck is as red as you say it is! I'm too old now to tackle these types of jobs but my 2000yr Focus just failed on a rusted out sub-frame...but also adjacent bodywork rusted too. There was a time I might have tackled a job like this from a Haynes manual but the UA-cam videos are SO much better. It was just a real pleasure watching you do this in your clever, down to earth practical way. People like you are really generous folk as this will help a lot of home DIYers. Now at least I know what's involved and why it costs a fair old amount of money to repair. Good for you! Cheers from the UK NoAxe
Great help. Appreciate the insight to such a major problem with the subframe. Mine was rustier, but your video saved hours of time and frustration. Many thanks.
Thanks for the video! This was very helpful. I had to do this on a 08 jeep patriot and I had trouble with the transmission mount and found it was easier to pull the subframe with the power steering rack and swaybar still connected to it. Hope that helps someone else. But thanks for the video, best video I could find on this!
Cool stuff Rick! That has to be the simplest sub frame swap video ever made. I love your videos because they are in layman terms. I am a budding shade tree mechanic and I like to kick back and watch your stuff because it familiarizes myself with the average underside of any car. My current project is a 1975 Chevelle Malibu. I just redid the brake lines, transmission pan, differential/pinion seal and gas tank swap. Without guys like you making videos I might have been too intimidated, like I was a couple years ago. But now I know its all about trial and error.. and just getting under the damn car .. examining and learning to troubleshoot in steps. I have 4 cars and the newest is a 2005 Altima.. so learning to wrench is not only fun but a necessity. THANKS BUD! ROCK ON!
Many thanks for the video, it enabled me and my son in law to swap out the subframe on my 2010 patriot it took us about 9 hours but we got it done. Thanks
You did a Great job explainig the job in detail! Im always working underneath cars also, but no one talks about the entire job from beginning to end, step by step!
thanks making this video ! saved a ton of money replacing it myself . The rack bolts were a b*%ch because my cross member was almost one third gone. thanks again we live in the great white north (canada) need guys like you on you tube CHEERS LEN
Man your great this video made my job so much easier besides me fighting the years of salt rust on my 08 rt telling the sizes helped out keep up the awesome work brother
Doing mine right now using this video. Saving me a lot of money. For me I had to heat up some seized bolts but everything is fairly easy. Many thanks man
Unfortunately my mother was in the same boat as others with her Caliber not being covered by the warranty they gave for these. I had a little trouble here and there but with your help I got that sucker out and I'm about to replace it. I really appreciate your video, thanks man!
Just did this on my friends '07 Caliber....them steering gear box bolts are the hardest s***s on that thing. But did it all with ratching wrenches an sockets.
Thanks Buddy for sharing this video it really help me to better understand mechanical and how to change this part. even if I have a Jeep Compass 2011 the subframe is the same. Keep the good work !
I don't miss living up north all that Rust all that salt on the roads during snowstorms..don't have that problem in Atlanta I work on cars to a lot easier down here without that Rust. Just the beer gets warm faster. Lol
Thanks for the Video, Brother! My Dodge Calibre is in for the same repair to pass its MOT, and your video justified the price I had to pay. It's a big job! Also needed 2 front wishbones, 2 front Brake Disks and Drivers side Brake Pad. Gonna cost £900. It's a 2006, and hopefully, will last another year yet. My Subframe was shocking! Actually dangerous. Seems to be a big problem with Chrysler, though, Subframes collecting water and rusting like there is no tomorrow. Keep up the good work! Subscribed 👍👍👍
For those that don't know. The subframe on certain years of calibers is under recall. My cousin has a 2007 and her daughter has a 2009 and dealer replaced both at no cost.
So wait am I doing all of this on my grandma's car for no reason? I pulled an entire rear subframe/chassis out of a salvage yard in Massachusetts DURING A RAINSTORM
@@Matt-hg2iz you might be doing it for nothing but check first. As I stated my cousins 2007 caliber subframe was done by the dealer. But my co workers 2011 was badly rusted also and his was not under recall and he ordered one on eBay for $129 and we both took off and installed the new one on his.
Why would you go through all of this work and put an OLD subframe back in? And why use an aftermarket Chinese subframe for $129 when you can get a Mopar part for $140 online?
I live in Ohio i have a 2008 caliber rt awd 112000miles and im replacing my front sub frame tomorrow myself, thanks for the video, I would not be attempting it with out it
Hi, were you able to change it ok? I also have a 2008 Dodge Caliber and just found out that the frame is all rusted and that I need to change it. how much did you pay for the frame?
Fastest way is to use a 4 and half inch cutoff wheel and cut away the bottom of the old subframe and then cut off the bolts from underneath. Tie up the rack to the motor mount with a zip tie, cut the swivel allen sway bar links and replace with new after, then drop it out.
I'm about to do this same thing I got the car very cheap super low miles runs like new has crack an I'm just going to change it an with these gas prices today I got very lucky it's 2008 dodge avenger se 2.4 super easy on gas thanks for the video boss
pb blaster! ive never in my life heard of subframes needin replaced and rickem has a new one to do every week or so, lmfao Im in pa so my weather is the same as you, for the most part
Very impressed with your video. Thanks you were very informative to exactly what I needed to know. I don’t usually like and subscribe, but I have on this video. Well done
I'm replacing this on my 2007 jeep patriot right now, and I have no idea how to get at the driver's side 17mm steering rack bolt. Maybe it's just the patriot. But I have the "rear roll mount " and some power steering lines sitting right over the bolt. Even if I could get a 17 mm on it, the bolt would have nowhere to go. I'm currently trying to remove the rear roll mount. Thinking I need to buy an extended flex head 16mm. Because I got the back two bolts and the top "through bolt" out. But the front most bolt i don't think i can access any other way.
Thank you very much. especially for stating the wrench sizes. all very helpfull. In my case the subframe is ok but I need to replace the rack. can that be done without removing the subframe?
mine in my 08 caliber failed inspection friday because of the rusted subframe yesterday i got a recall notice in the mail for an extended 10 year off to the dealer it goes so everone with an o8 they are now recalled not just the 07
Hey , i stumbled across this video due to the fact im trying to replace a sway bar on a jeep patriot and i cannot figure out how to get bar in . Looks like this subframe cross member has to drop some to get it in there.
I have the same problem. but its with the rear crossmember. Is this a difficult job? since its front wheel drive i suspect its easier, but please do let me know
Question for you on installing the new subframe. Were you able to install it with the a arms and ball joints attached to the new subframe or do you need to install the subframe and then attach the arms?
Awesome! I need to do mine, this video definitely helps. I may have to replace the steering rack too, once I see how bad it is. I'm hoping it's just rusted loose from the subframe if not, at least having the subframe out of the way will make replacing it much easier. After I do this I'll have basically an entirely new front end. I live in northern Michigan so... there's that. Rust sucks. Thinking of filling the new subframe with expanding foam or something to seal it off better and painting it with rust oleum beforehand. Any thoughts on that? I just don't want to have to deal with it again and when I decide to sell I can let the person know that it won't be a future issue because I took extra measures... thanks in advance! And once again, thanks for this video! I'll be using it as a guide for my job.
The foam will hold moisture. Best to fluid film it inside and out and check it yearly for a fresh coat. The AC line is a big issue since it drips right onto the subframe from the top and can fill it with water. Get a 3/8" 90-degree barbed elbow and insert it into the AC line with a clear tubing line that is zip-tied to the frame to reroute the dripping away from the frame. I'm working with the same car. I'm trying to get mine back in but can't. Having problems with the sway bar and rack and pinion location. Does the sway bar and pinion go under the the motor mount bracket? I can't tell by seeing the video.
Bro I need help all the bolts that you took off for the subframe including the sway bar any type of motor mounts or the fuel rail bolts. Pretty much just all the bolts that you took off in your video I know this is going to be a question that you probably don't want to answer but it would really help me out a lot all my bolts I took out were stripped and I took them to go get sized I can't figure it out I can't find a book on it to tell me what the bolt sizes are I really would like it if you could help me. I want to replace all the bolts I didn't get a bag when I bought my subframe like you did so I was really really upset about that. If you know the sizes bro I would be so grateful if you could tell me what they were thank you so much man
Was the subframe replaced because of rust? I am considering replacing the subframe on my Caliber SRT-4. I was surprised at how rusty it has gotten since I purchased it new in '09 and the car only has 62k miles.

If u disconnect the lines it might be easier but then u have to bleed the steering system and that can sometimes be a bitch.

Where did you get the new subframe from? P.S love the video, just purchased a caliber that will need a new subframe
Awesome video! What brand and model of 1/2" impact is that? I bought a better one than I had on Amazon for $65. But I really want a good one too.
Question for you on installing the new subframe. Were you able to install it with the a arms and ball joints attached to the new subframe or do you need to install the subframe and then attach the arms?

The foam will hold moisture. Best to fluid film it inside and out and check it yearly for a fresh coat. video works with the jeep patriot to. until you get to the rear motor mount and rackin pinion bolt. then it gets tricky
Great vid by the way.👍👍
sweat video,...nice job!!!

Is it the same process on a awd
Thanks for the great video. I am also from Canada. Would you please tell me where you got the engine cradle from? I need to get one and any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks
Do you have to drop the sub frame to replace the rack and pinion
Where would I get the subframe for my Dodge Caliber 2008?
I think the subframes on those dodges are recalled
Ya there is a recall on the rear subframe on the Jeep Compass, Dodge Caliber and jeep Patriot 10yrs unlimited kilometres
How did you hold the engine up. Just with the jack?
I’m looking for a front subframe replacement for my 2011 Jeep Compass. Anybody know where I can find one?
Broke my subframe Thursday
Is the sway bar connected and bolted to the subframe?
Hell yeah you got a ball pen hammer 🔨 good deal

I cant find this part anywhere for a 2007 dodge caliber cant find it on any auto part stores
Did anyone ever post the torque values for this job?
Im so worried about your safety. You dont have extra support stand incase one of your stand collapse. U must put any just incase a tire or jack stand.
My dealer says the replacement parts not available!!
