Can someone tell me the purpose of those five-light trackside devices that appear to be signals? In some locations they are closely spaced. I'm about 36 minutes into the video and I don't recall seeing any lit. Special warning device, like protective signals in North America (rockslide, high water)?

個人的に好きなのは冬。雪景色がたまりません。もちろん今の時期は紅葉が楽しめてそれもいいものです。
Very pretty Fall colors. I think train rides in the snow are best but this is right up there.

10年前の夏、富山から帰る時この普通列車に乗りたかったな。もっとも旧型車輌だったけど！景色がよく見えるからゆっくり観るべや。渚駅の由来は飛騨川の渡し舟が作った岸辺の波との事｡下呂駅近くのロケーションも良い。

You are correct, they are to warn of obstructions such as landslides or vehicles on level crossings.
