Also the shapes, the composition, the symmetry, patterns, ornaments ... look at the skyscrapers of the late 19th and early 20th century! They look fantastic and impressive. why not transfer these proven beauty formulas to the modern age?

    • @TheErudite21
      @TheErudite21 5 років тому +4

      @@fenixfunk Like what?? I do enjoy some good stone buildings and do think glass is used a bit too much. But this particular building is really beautiful and a unique design!
      A lot of stone buildings tend to go too far into Brutalism and look bleak. And I just don't think a stone building is physically capable of being built this tall.
      The Empire State building for instance seems terribly blocky and inelegant to me, looks like something out of minecraft.
      The Chrysler building on the other hand looks timeless, unique, and unmistakable. If the Empire State building was as tall as a normal building, it would be completely unrecognizable.
      I live in Atlanta, there's several great stone buildings such as the Georgia Pacific that looks like it's made of marble, the bank of America one is like a better version of the empire state IMO...
      All that to say the use of material is secondary to the overall design. I think this is designed very well and utilizes the material to further the design by letting in more light than stone ever could, and being designed around the sight lines of the streets and buildings surrounding it to be less imposing and more elegant.

    I'm not convinced that such an extravagant building should ever be considered environmental or sustainable, no matter how much recycling and other virtue signaling they do. 6 meter (20 foot) ceilings are utterly ridiculous, especially in an office tower. Being environmental and sustainable doesn't mean mere virtue signalling *after* your basic plans have been made. It means considering from the start whether a project should be built at all, and if so, where and how and what would happen if everyone else did similarly. Clearly that wasn't how this project proceeded.
    I also think it rather tramples the English language to call it sensitive to its surroundings. It's quite clearly doing everything it can to stand out and differentiate itself from its surroundings, even going so far as to introduce jarring angled lines and cantilevers into an environment that formerly did not have them. Like most modern projects, it's anything but sensitive.

    It's Grand Central ***Terminal*** - not Grand Central Station!!!!!!!!! 'Grand Central' is not a station; it is a terminal (train lines begin & end there - it is not merely a stop/station along a train line). I love this channel but this one makes me cringe because I love NYC & this channel and so I'm shocked that this could be overlooked. Try typing "Grand Central.." into a Google browser and any website or even Wikipedia would tell you it's "Terminal" and not "Station" - not to mention if you referenced any scholarly encyclopedia, etc. I hope this is one of only very few other overlooked mistakes by B1M..

    I DO like this building on its own merits, but it suffers in comparison to the Chrysler, Empire State, and Grand Central Station structures that are also referenced here. The 'contextualism' and throw away details like the 'blink and you'll miss it' use of terra cotta tiles on the exterior, looks comparatively crude next to the classically detailed structures.
    I'm especially underwhelmed with the bland summit of the building - which I find looks more like a random stack of glass slabs leaning against each other and bound with stretch wrap rather than being a 'breathtaking summit'.
    The other wasted opportunity for me is the simplistic and forgettable pattern of the terra cotta tiles. When referencing Grand Central station immediately opposite of it, with its rich patterning and gorgeous details, I feel a somewhat stronger classic element to the design would have been more fun and engaging.
    The best part of this building, for me, are the various 'improvements' the builders were required to include with the building. The underground links to Grand Central as well as the street level improvements looks positive. Also admirable are the LEED certification and an overall appealing lobby.
    Once again, this is a good building, but because its being contrasted with some of the most beautiful icons of the classic era of skyscrapers, some of the soaring praise for 'One Vanderbilt' falls a bit flat for me.

      When the twin towers were built between the 1960's and the 1970's, they did add a concrete core. Steel doesn't do very well in fire and maybe that is why the twin towers collapsed on 9/11. But the twin towers were designed to withstand an impact of a Boeing 707 aircraft traveling 400 mph. The airplanes that hit the twin towers on 9/11 were 767s.

    Why is glass is always the first choice for the facade of the new buildings?

    • @pas.
      @pas. 5 років тому +7

      You already need to maximize the amount of light that gets into the building. The loadbearing core is situated at the middle, so only skinny columns are required at the edges, basically to hold the floors. And you end up with big windows and a very thin floor between them. So why not cover those with something similar too?
      Here they use glazed white terracotta: newyorkyimby.com/2018/08/one-vanderbilts-terracotta-facade-installation-begins-as-superstructure-passes-halfway-point-in-midtown-manhattan.html
      So basically only windows are made of glass: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/74/OneVanderbiltMay25.jpg

      A masonry exterior is likely more expensive than glass, and developers probably don't care for historic attributes. Build in the cheapest way possible

    • @pas.
      @pas. 5 років тому +4

      @@mickanvonfootscraymarket5520 Masonry takes up a lot of space and seriously limits light intake. The Grand Central Terminal is just one big hall, not much in the way of light inside the building. (And still, the thick walls and structural elements occlude a lot of incoming light.)

    • @mickanvonfootscraymarket5520
      @mickanvonfootscraymarket5520 5 років тому

      @@pas. but Grand Central is a different structure with a different purpose, than say the Flatiron Building which would take in more sunlight as well being a a masonry structure. But I understand where you are coming home.

    • @pas.
      @pas. 5 років тому +1

      @@mickanvonfootscraymarket5520 One other important detail is mass of the facade. If you want to build a supertall structure, you want to minimize the mass. So I guess this alone somewhat predestines the facade to be extremely minimalistic, wind resistant, easy to clean, so a big homogeneous surface.
