Coach Nick got out on the court to explain the best way to defend the sideline screen and roll, using what Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau calls "ICE." Listen carefully during an NBA game and you'll hear the players and coaches scream "ICE!" or "Blue!" This means they want the on ball defender to force the ball handler away from the screen.
This is truly the best way to guard the sideline screen and roll, because it contains the ball handler well and does not require a third defender to rotate over and help.
Ice Defense helped me a lot on NBA2K.
I wish we had more time to film this - and yes, we're seeing teams start to force the ball handler away from the high screen - and if the screen is flat, just force him to one side. This is how I'd defend it
Awesome. Let me know how it works for you and if there's anything you notice that doesn't work...

ICYMI: We released a breakdown of ICE - defending the PnR. I explain why I don't like how the #Heat defend it.

Very interesting video as usual Coach! I was familiar with the concept but it is definitely a must known for any decent basketball fan!
Thanks. You'll be able to spot the teams that are cutting edge defensively.
I didn't think you could defend the Pick -n- Roll that well. Great video. Looking forward to more video's like this one.
Sideline is easier if you're DISCIPLINED and well drilled..
The Heat are so athletic that they can hurt most teams with their pressure and rotations. But when you get deep in the playoffs in a multi game series, good teams get used to it and can slice it up.
Coach Nick this is so useful! I am rather new to playing basketball (1.5 years) and I always get confused when I m defending a pick n roll. But now I think I at least know my role as a defender to the ball handler. I can't wait to execute this defense next time I play.
NBA offenses have 4s that can really shoot these days..you ice that screen, Bosh, Millsap, Davis, Love & many more will knock down that jumper
Which is why most teams now a days switch against teams that have those stretch fours.
Zaviay Taylor Yes, offenses keep improving, defenses keep adjusting.
+Emmanuel Moses on some level I think ICE defense is really good depending the matchup. Most 1-5 pick and rolls don't have Centers that can shoot threes efficiently. But soon enough that won't be the case. And what a lot of teams do - that this video doesn't show - is stunt the shooter to buy the PNR big some time. Works more than it doesn't if you have the right personnel.
@@Boiblu1914 All you do is rescreen and the middle of the floor is open. It's an outdated defence.
@@princeedwards3489 Mostly because big men are better 3-point shooters compared to back 3 years ago when I first made the comment. Without that, you re-screen and the help defense is right there (on a competent defensive team that is)...
You have a good point, Dixie. That said, there are coaches out there at ALL levels with gaps in their knowledge, or haven't been exposed to other methods.
Thanks! You should check out our other breakdowns!
email me coachnick@bballbreakdown[dot]com
This was a really good video on the pick´n´roll defence. You could do one for the offensive side for new and old basket fans.
Thanks! Lots more coming up...
In Spain and some places in Europe we call this pick and roll defense as 'BLUE'
Been waiting for this one. You're the man Coach Nick!
I'm giving your pointers to my son, as we practice on the driveway. He's 10 and plays 12u AAU club ball. This helps very much, thanks. Subscribed!
Did he make it to the NBA?
Just checking
THANKS! Lots more of these coming up before the season starts...
All time, I'd have to go with Phil Jackson, but Tex Winter is a mentor and one of my favorites. But Pete Newell is also the guy who I pattern my coaching philosophy after.
Thanks! We've got lots more of this coming up...
Floaters with a big man in your face is a tough shot - the kind of shot I wouldn't mind giving up. There are maybe 4 or 5 guys that can shoot that 3 who are PFs... I'd take my chances - if he hits enough of them, they deserve to win that game...
I think it's short for isolation or isolate - meaning keep the ball isolated on one side...
Coach, could you please make a video on zones?: Using them, types of zones and especially beating them. I know it's rare to see in the NBA or higher forms of basketball but there are tonnes of teams running them in lower divisional basketball and it can be hard to have a team with enough team cohesion and confidence to beat a zone. Just wondering in case you have the time. Keep up the great vids.
You're right Dixie Nourmos thats true but I still like coach nick he makes me understand basketball more
please do a double team defensive breakdown, and how to double and defend the post. these are critical to nba defenses @bballbreakdown
Great! Keep me updated!
Best basketball channel ever!! Only place were I can really study and learn basketball. This channel has really helped me be a better player on both sides of the court. Thanks BBall Breakdown!! 💪🏀
Yes - there are a handful of pick and pop guys that would love to get a decent look at a long 2...
I wish we had shot this, because I think you can ICE that screen as well - turn the ball handler away from the screen and have the screener's man sag/contain. More teams are setting flat screens on top, making it impossible to hedge since the ball handler can just go the other way. ICE would solve that...
Great vid; I'll apply the denial of the pick and roll at the top and communicate with the helping defender to prevent the penetration only giving the offense the option of a long 2.. Thanks coach.
Yes! I'm a fan of the Chicago Bulls from 1978-1998
coach nick you're the best. show us princeton offence and triangle offence.
2:20 is really what has pushed the development of the stretch 4 man. when the pnr is ICEd the big has an open mid range shot
Really great piece of information that u can't find anywhere else.
I know you've often criticized the Heat for their ultra aggressive defense, but I think it's more of a personnel issue. Bosh, Haslem, and Birdman aren't even close to Noah, Duncan, and Gasol at protecting the rim, but they're faster and more mobile. I think it naturally makes sense for them to hedge aggressively, especially since they have great weak side help defenders in James and Wade. I'd like to see if they play ICE with Oden on the floor though (assuming he can play).
Thanks for this coach. I'm a Laker fan and I'm reading about P&R Ice coverage deficiencies.
This video helped a lot. Thank you.
well the thing is is that the defensive player who was screened by the pivot-screen has time to recover because the other defensive player prevents the penetration. that defensive player who freezes the penetration simply has to threaten the pull-up jumper without over committing. then quickly make sure the player who set the screen doesn't have a clear lane to roll to the basket. by that time the one who was screened should be back in position to the ball handler.
You'd give up decent looks to pick and pop guys. THere are a few of them out there, but it's preferable to the other shots Dirk can get against you. And if you train your big man right, he should be able to close out and at least contest the shot...
Seems like it'd be very easy to break down the D, w/ the screener aggressively cutting to the hoop, at the same time the ballhandler aggressively attacking toward the rim. BH could bounce-pass or lob to the cutter, could fake the pass. The BH's defender is going to be trailing the play (aggressive attack) because of the overplaying.
If the screener pops, he could pop out a couple of steps toward the middle, where he'd be left wide open. If the BH could get a pass past his overplaying defendr
Wasn't it the 1993 Bulls during the ECF Vs the Knicks? I think that's when they made the adjustment on the Ewing - Starks pick n roll.
That's a long road, with a specific focus, that I didn't have at an early age
Thanks Coach, been waiting for this breakdown on screens. Keep up the good work =)
He rolls right into his man, who's down by the block waiting for him
Hey coach, could you please bring a breakdown of the high pick& roll? with the focus on proper spacing btwn the screener and the ball-handler? And maybe an optimal angle to the rim?
Not one defensive system is the clear cut best- different systems need different sorts of players to be used effectively.
The Heat use an aggressive defense which utilizes there athleticism as it forces turnovers and excellent teamwork on the other side.
Ice works well on the side-line P&R and isn't that effective up top. It can also drastically fail if u don't have a cohesive defense as if not carried out properly it can give up easy lay-ups- as coach Nick explained.
YES, as AQGOAT24 said, defenses are more than happy to give up those shots. And as we saw in the Finals, Malone wasn't able to consistently hit those shots...
Whoever you've got recording is doing a good job.
Love the guy in the background just chillin at 4:00
Offenses are becoming really good at countering ice defense now.
How? The only way I've seen to counter is when the screener is a great 3pt shooter like Dirk...
BBALLBREAKDOWN I made the comment before actually watching the video. But you pointed out what I was alluding to anyway: re-screening the defender to eliminate ice. However, the ball handler *must* cross back over towards the middle after receiving the pivot screen. In your example, he does not, allowing the defence to win by pushing him baseline.
Alique Williams The method you mentioned is known as "snaking" the dribble. This allows the ball-handler to get back to the middle of the floor. However, with the sagging big man containing the ball-handler, it usually leads to the ball-handler settling for a long inefficient two-point jumper (depending on the time left on the shot clock). Stretch 4s pose an advantage to ICE, correct. But defenses can simply switch the screens to prevent the easy pick-and-pop to the versatile big man (a la Spurs).
Andrew Ward Rarely do I receive good replies like yours. *high five*
BBALLBREAKDOWN Or when Westbrook is the one driving.
Giving up pick-and-pops mid range jumpshots to PFs?
Some 4s can shoot. How about Serge Ibaka, Chris Bosh, Lamarcus Aldridge, Ryan Anderson, David West, Antawn Jamison, Tim Duncan, Udonis Haslem, Kevin Garnett, Zach Randolph, Andrea Bargnani, David Lee, Pau Gasol, (when mentally focused)?
Also, how about the SFs that slide into the PF spot espcecially in the modern NBA smallball? Shane Battier, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard etc.?
Great breakdown Coach Nick. I have a question though. What should the defense do if the screener is someone like Dirk Nowitzki who can pop out for an open 3? Wouldn't the guy guarding the screener be forced to play closer to his man? I would imagine that's not the shot the defense wants to give up.
Nice explanation. However, I'm not so convinced by the pivot-screen adjustment. It seems like all you're really saying is, if they pivot screen, just fight through it.
Coming up, before the season starts...
I swear I remember something about the Riley Knicks having a hand in it. In a series against the Bulls maybe?
thanks for tht coach, this actually helped me in my real life game, ive been trying to work on my defense, and this was very helpful especialy in JRhighschool ball, the pick and roll s a main play
Still eagerly waiting for the load and release video....
beautiful coach
no one even runs that offense anymore. But i would still like to see a breakdown. Also, how are you supposed to defend a screen and roll at the top of the key?
Defence still rotates!
(4:54) Bonner helps to play the possible dive from Gasol. Leonard rotates to play Zbo, Manu plays 2, (these are defensive rotations).
(5:05) If Zbo doesn't help/clip/tag off the big behind the ball, (Diaw), Duncan gets the catch and dunks it... Normally Tony Allen would stunt on the throwback pass to Diaw to allow Randolph more time to recover, but he's guarding a shooter and stay's at home. And Diaw get's a wide open 3 not the prescribed long 2.
Of course it does
Hey are you gonna cover derrick rose's return or are you waiting for the start of the season?
Hey Coach, have you watched Clippers training, full 2,5h, on NBA LP? People say that Doc Rivers is going to introduce Thibodeau's defense as a Clippers' coach. Do you agree? He seems to teach the bigs to hedge hard...
I wonder if this would have worked against Stockton and Malone. Probably not.
Not a chance. Good call!
Malone could shit the mid
Are you going to break down any preseason games?
No it would work. There's an emphasis that ICE forces jumpshots. Which is what a team running ice wants. I mean a team running a pick and roll want to either get to the basket with the ball handler, draw the defenders in for a wing 3, OR, as a mostly last option, kick it back for the roll man jumpshot. ICE cuts down the offense's option to one, which is a the roll man taking a jumpshot, something many teams would allow them to take all night rather than layups.
i dont really understand why you must (as the defender) give the ballhandler the lane that is opposite of the screen isn't it the same either way? they can still roll or pop it regardless of which lane you give them or am i wrong
it is not an inefficient long two, it is a WIDE OPEN 3, and the shooter like kevin love can nail it every time!
what ever happened to doing a breakdown of the eufo fiba finals game?
Coach can you upload a vid on different ways to use the pick and roll
The counter to this is simply a flat on ball, meaning screener sets screen with back to baseline, putting the post defender one on one vs the guard
Looks good coach. In college my university never did this. We would either jump hedge or gate the screens but this seems much more efficient. In your opinion what's the best way of guarding the pick and roll at the top of the key though?
this is exactly the shit im talking about when I subscribed to this channel.
is ICE an abbreviation for something, or is that your way of saying the offense will freeze with this method?
Which is why the bulls tend to have a hard time with Portland. LA's long range shots kill them.
Thanks a lot for this! I do, however, have two questions left:
1) Can you ice someone when they screen to the middle or will this make the ballhandler too much of a thread inside?
2) I don't get your elaboration on defensive communication in the end 5:42 Who is supposed to say what and when?
awesome channel!! u got urself a sub!, keep it up awesome bball knowledge!!
@bballbreakdown coach will you be doing any more defensive breakdwowns? iso? double teaming the post correctly from the weakside with timing of the double?
Seems like the pop player could be a 3pt specialist and he just steps outside the 3 once the ball handler draws both defenders
What about if the screen man rolls? In your demonstration the one who sets the screen never rolled... In the highlight videos, the plays where the screener rolls, the offense scores every time!!!
Coach do you think it would be easier to do a rotation once the ball handler goes baseline, as in, have the man defending the ball handler switch to defend the long 2 or 3 once the ball passed, that way the defender can still protect the baseline without the threat of him accidentally rotating too quickly and giving up an easy lay up?
THibs won't take credit for it. There was an article not long ago that said maybe the Bulls figured it out by accident...
Coach Nick you say Ice is the best way to defend P&R's but there is I think one big loophole to your theory. The BACKTOBACK defending champions hedge hard instead of ice, and they're still one of the best defensive teams. How do you explain the defending champions using a defense different from yours and still winning?
Kinda sorta - but you have to force the ball handler away from the screen
well you have to adapt to the personnel. in high school, how often do you have a big that can consistently pull that shot? most of which are diving to the hoop
Great video. Should teams still deny the screen when the ball handler is at the top of the key, and not the wing?
Of course
Hi coach, it really helps.Nice vid. May I ask why it is called ICE?
Love these vids.. Thanks coach!
Whoa. You played for Clayton State, right?
Great breakdown!
I'm an newbie. In 2k 14 is ICE the same as a go over screen defense with a soft hedge?
What's the key difference between this vs shadow & recover?
I believe the pivot screen you speak of is called a "step up" screen
If youre defending, why wouldnt you just switch if it doesn't create a mismatch?
Do the warrior vs lakers preseason game
coach, who's your favorite NBA head coach right now, and all time too...
You know, the game of basketball is more than just defending the P&R btw. It's overall defense that wins championships. Sure they do hedge hard on P&R's, but also there's a huge loophole to that. ICE solves that issue. Just wonder, if the Heat would've used ICE instead of hedging, do you think the series against the Pacers and the Spurs would've gone 7 games? I don't think so.
Favorite video by far
That's coming (I seriously can't believe people want it, but it'll be hilarious...)
I don't think you explained very well, what is key is that the player defending the ball handler bumps the screener before he gets there, and the defender on the screen steps up to take the drive, as soon as the second defender steps up the first defender must be quick enough to provide support for the roll. This technique works well in high school with less experienced players, and works in the pros because of the pure talent and athleticism of defenders.
I think you just miss out on the complexity of what goes on in an NBA game. Read Zach Lowe's pieces on Grantland, he shows complex stuff that NBA teams run. Coach Nick does that as well with his videos, but it doesn't seem like they have gotten to you.
remember its the game of percentages. you cant stop everything but you can force a low percentage shot. that's how basketball defence works
coach what if the screen is to the baseline?
Damn 10 years ago
