Hey coach I would love to see a video where you analyze some of the less athletic players in the league, and how they make up for their lack of speed and jumping ability. Players like Steph or present Melo seem like obvious choices, but you obviously know a lot more about that than me. Thanks coach, love your videos
Eh, while Steph is an absolute snail when it comes to straight-line speed, he's elite when it comes to lateral speed and agility. There are few guards better at cutting and stopping on a dime. That's why he's so good at getting himself open off-ball and creating sideways space for shots. Steph is actually pretty damn athletic, just not in a conventional way.
Bumping or “scramming” is an excellent technique but it requires multiple defenders to be on the same page and have great anticipation. The margin for error is very slim. It’s no surprise that the Warriors and the Celtics are able to execute it frequently. However, offensive players with great anticipation and awareness will be able to identify the weak spots that occur in split seconds. Take the play at 3:24 for example. When Draymond switches onto JR in the post, both Steph and Klay execute a switch onto Tristian but I’d say a hair too late. Tristian is able to box Klay under the basket and get a possible easy look but JR misses the opportunity and the defense is set. It’s so awesome to see the anticipation battles between players with high IQs
Steve kerr is so Smart and so lucky at the same time. He knows how utilize Draymond defensive prowess making him best defender in the league. He knows how to set screen and role with 3 to 4 players moving while the 2 best off ball players Curry and Klay continue to find an open shot.
This is why i love today's game, the defense might be less physical but it is more structured and team oriented. Too bad, many fans of the old school defense only appreciate the physicality of the defenses but if you watch the today's games there are so many technicalities going on.
Can't expect everyone to know team play unfortunately. The casual baller is individualistic and doesn't even know how to attack a p&r properly, but they're playing ball and that's all that matters.
It's amazing how subtle changes in the rulebook can have such a profound impact on the court and create 'niches' for players like Green or Harden to thrive in. How has the game evolved over the past decades, with the resurgence of unicorns like Porzingis and Jokic? Thanks, and great content as always!
very good video, of course there are other possible defence which are less used in nba though like blitzing the ball handler... but with advanced stats I supposed staffs implements those other possibilities from time to time
Great video. I been saying this for years is just to switch on the pick and rolls and stop giving up open shots going under and over screens....also this shows how curry and is hidden in the warriors defense.
coach nick, as offenses become more and more advanced and efficient, do you think we'll start to see teams pre-pre switching lol? Or do you think in a decade, most nba defenses will just be 5 interchangeable defenders who can switch on to anybody?
Love your work, I watched the video for more on ball screen knowledge. Scram, 'bump off', or pre switch was the exact thing I was looking for. Do you have any written articles for to use to explain to others. Or any links that have diagrams, drills etc.
At the side pick and roll I always choose for channelling baseline (fan). because then you have rotation or help of the same side corner. When they play middle pick and roll my helpside defense helps on the roll men.
It baffles my mind how some coaches still have jobs when they cant make there players do a switch on the pick and roll. I underused the miss matches on the pick and roll switch but the nba pays the players millions of dollars they should at least try to switch and stay with the man they pick up
Sometimes it's a personnel issue (they don't have enough defenders that can switch pick and rolls) and sometimes not switching is a decent strategy... sometimes you can blitz the ball handler, or hedge with the big man before going back to the original assignment, or things like that. It becomes a problem when you don't try to do any of that simply because guys are becoming so good at shooting off the dribble, so you can't just go under the screen anymore.
Thing is, Steve Kerr isn't really hiding any secrets, this is just common sense on defence. If you have an unfavourable matchup you need to switch in order to better the odds. The difference is that Golden State has a very effective way of implementing switches in the middle of a play without giving up an open lane or open shot. Doing this away from the ball is also a testament to their discipline. A lot of teams are busy trying to figure out lineups and maximising their offensive capabilities, but they fail to pay attention to these key defensive principles that provide them with an opportunity to execute their offence in the first place. I've always felt that Golden State can play the way they do because they are so tuned in on defence that their offence just comes naturally to them.
Segue powers level up! Bet ya they don't teach that at Point Guard college, a highly active, highly effective basketball school for mature high school and college players who are serious about improving their game. :D :D :D
Kerr off ball switches was illegal back then That mean that if you get switch you have no choice but defend bigger guys Damn that's why hand check was allowed back then
most of those 90's heads that say there's no defense today don't know what's going on and since they don't see bodies flying on the floor they assume today's game has no defense lol
“Traditionally consumers defended against advertising by tuning out or changing channels. Thus advertisers have had to resort to new and creative ways to get people to watch ads” 😂 But yeah great video although it was interesting how the last part was about defending the post up instead of pick and roll. What about defending the pick and fade ? Isn’t ice kind of pointless now if big men can fade ?
Lol, next week we have nationals and our coach always tells us, I don’t worry bout my offense you have a lot of talents and lots of talking, I worry about defense cause we just need to stop the ball and go on transition, that’s how we work
The fact that Steven Adams was a better option in the PnR defense than Melo is just sad. Melo has been in the discussion of top 10 players for the longest time and can't play any defense.
I didn’t see that ad transition coming. Well played.
Jordy Lont I sorta saw it coming but not at that exact second 😂. He's gotta just start throwing it in mid sentence to really throw us off 😂
Haha that was Coach Nick's best transition yet. They're always great but this one was the slickest thing I've ever seen lmao.
With a transition to an ad that good, I don't mind watching it, bravo~!
Haha, now GO GET SOME seats from Seat Geek!!
That transition was A1
Was talking about artistic transitions in my English class today and of course Coach Nick came to mind
haha, awesome!
Came to mind, or came up in class?
The 2k19 CPU already know this
M.C Lmaooo straight facts man.
that AI defense is still trash on fastbreaks

Ooohhh.. that's good
Maybe a breakdown of Tim Duncan on the defensive end? He never was athletic, yet very dominant.
TIm Duncan is a great example.
Just like Jokic, Dirk

Good point. Magic Johnson would destroy it
Very well-thought point. If JR got better awareness and Tristan cut right to the rim it would be an easy reverse
I think it's lit that Steve Kerr know about bballbreakdown
I think coach Nick be Skype coaching the Warriors
I swear Melo just joined the Rockets so they'd stop abusing him in the PnR
BINGO!!!!
Hank Hill good thing we got Tucker
now neither Melo nor Harden doesn't play defence :)
@@MilanDrazic nah , ariza is a bag of chips in the playoffs so melo is a better choice

OK, we will see
I think Houston is weaker this season

I agree. The best defense is where you don’t have to get physical and/or foul...
Yeah let's be physically . Until someone gets hurt . Then your bitching .
most of those 90's heads don't know what's going on and since they don't see bodies flying on the floor they assume today's game has no defense lol
This is another example why Draymond is underrated using standard individual stats.
BINGO
Blks don't mean D
5:47 Damn KLove is getting BODIED by Draymond
Hot Dang! That transition to sponsor and back is indeed a work of art!
Too bad in a lot of pickup games I play, my random teammates don’t even play proper defense. It is a lost art in today’s game.
Can't expect everyone to know team play unfortunately. The casual baller is individualistic and doesn't even know how to attack a p&r properly, but they're playing ball and that's all that matters.
If the title is not exxaggerated Coach just broke the NBA
But, is Coach Nick human tho ?
recently, I've been a lot more human
