How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter in GM transmissions 4L60-E, 4L65-E and 4L70-E
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER REPLACEMENT
- Start loosening oil pan bolts from back to front
- Place oil drain pan under the transmission oil pan to catch oil
- Slowly undo transmission oil pan bolts around pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain into the container
- Remove the transmission oil pan and the transmission oil pan gasket
- Remove transmission oil filter by pulling it down
- Remove pan transmission pan gasket if it wasn't remove with filter
IMPORTANT: Make sure you remove the filter seal. The filter seal may be stuck in the pump; if necessary, carefully use pliers or another suitable tool to remove the transmission filter seal
IMPORTANT: Make sure you clean transmission oil pan gasket surfaces. All traces of the old gasket material must be removed
IMPORTANT: Clean the Transmission Case gasket surface very well. All traces of the old gasket material must be removed.
- Coat new filter seal with clean transmission fluid and install into the transmission case. Tap the seal into place gently using a appropriate socket size (19mm for my Hummer H3).
- Install the new filter into the case
- Position gasket on top of pan properly
- Install the oil pan and a new gasket. Tighten bolts by hands
IMPORTANT: Tighten the oil pan to transmission case in criss cross pattern to your vehicle torq spec. For my Hummer H3: 16 N.m (12 lb ft)
Finish tightening to your vehicle torque spec. For my Hummer H3 - 70 N.m (51 lb ft)
- To start filling new transmission fluid to the proper level - measure how much of old fluid you drained. Always use the proper automatic transmission fluid listed. Using incorrect automatic transmission fluid may damage the vehicle.
Before checking the fluid level, perform the following:
1. Start the engine and park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in PARK (P).
3. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through each
gear range, pausing for about 3 seconds in each range. Then,
move the shift lever back to PARK (P).
4. Allow the engine to idle 500-800 RPM for at least 1 minute.
Slowly release the brake pedal.
5. Keep the engine running and observe the transmission fluid
temperature (TFT)
If TFT temperature is 27-32°C (80-90°F) - use Cold Check Procedure
If TFT temperature is 82-93°C (180-200°F) - use Hot Check Procedure
IMPORTANT: Check the cold fluid level reading for initial fill only
Hot Check Procedure:
Use this procedure to check the transmission fluid level
when the Transmission fluid temperature is between
82-93°C (180-200°F) and engine is idling. To assist in reaching the correct temperature range of 82-93°C (180-200°F), drive the vehicle in second gear
at no more than 65 mph until the desired temperature is reached.

Took me 7 hours of continuous labor to change the gasket the filter clean it up the pan and put everything back together and doing it with out a jack or another person. It sucks but worth it!! 1996 GMC SONOMA 🦅 🇺🇸 🎇

So what I did is I made a wet vac with my shop vac, sealable 5 gallon bucket, and some ⅜" clear vinyl tubing. Firstly, I sucked what I could out of the dipstick tube, then, Once I had the pan loose and opened enough, I just sucked out all the fluid so I didn't have to deal with the Niagara falls of ATF. Worked fairly well
Sounds like a good way to prevent mess, but I never had problem since I take my time ...
Good advice, my only question is how do you get the fraction like that?

Great procedure and video explanation!
I would add two very important steps to your procedure:
-First: Must replace the Boost Valve in the pump assembly (you have access to it with Oil Pan removed) with the Booster Boost Valve made by SONNAX. For h3 is the Sonnax 4l60-LB2 booster boost Valve.
Its so important! In 4l60e the main cause of burned clutches and poor shifting over time is the decrease in pressure due to Worn Out Boost Valve. That Boost Valve needs to be replaced each 50000 miles...and nobody takes care of it...that is usually the reason why so many people rebuild their 4l60e to burn clutches again very soon...because they didnt fix the cause of poor line pressure.
-Second is to add to the Transmission a bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Fix as a preventative maintenance...this is only my suggestion but transmission seems to work colder and stronger with this additive in each oil change.
(Another cause of poor line pressure is a worn out Separator plate betweem valve body and transmission...usually this happen in the hole where the check balls seat...the balls create over time a cone shaped hole that leaks fluid and loss pressure)

Epa is gonna hate me for saying this, but for cleaning up the trans pan, you can use a little bit of gasoline to break everything down and help just clean it off, prob should let it dry off before use agsin but yea

Yes, it did
OK not going into details but I over filled my transmission so I shouldn't have to completely unbolt it right to just drain some out.
Make sure you use Hot Check procedure to properly measure the level - it is in the video at 8:24 mark. If you overfilled - you can buy a small pump and pump it through fill tube. I used this one to pump some in my mercedes when I overfilled engine oil: amzn.to/3BikThc
