I prefer the Rebar/ST300 to all other Leathermans. Unlike the Wave/Surge you don't worry about pinching yourself when using the pliers. Out of all of Leatherman's blades, the Rebar is by far the best grind -- unlike the other blades, it isn't ridiculously thick behind the edge, and is actually properly ground to slice through material. I find that the more square plier head works well as an edge scraper for deburring PVC or scraping away tape residue quickly. For what you're getting, I think it is by far the best value out of the lineup because it is 99% as capable as a Wave without the added complexity and added price.

I think there's something elegant about a multitool that has no exposed tools when closed. Rebar, Supertool, original PST, even Micra. They're sleek and, in the absence of a pocket clip, the most pocket-friendly design. Nothing to get hurt on when digging for them, nothing to get tangled with keys etc., nothing to invite pocket lint into the inner workings...
    Just my two cents.

Not outdated at all. The Rebar is a great platform to mod and to go camping with. As is, can be paired with a folding knife and you’re good, going a little further, maybe with the Armbar Corckscrew or a Leatherman T2/T4 could be great. Don’t need outside tools every time; besides, it looks inofensiva and pretty slick.

I think the rebar’s strength is in being lightweight and yet quite functional but it has much less complexity than the newer models and should be priced more competitively perhaps.

I like the internal tools. For me that makes it a classic Leatherman. It closes like a clamshell and makes its own toolbox out of its own handle. Safe, pocketable, elegant design. But I get why people want one handed opening exterior tools and such. I carry mine as a deluxe pocket knife, not on a job site, so a second or two to open it is ok. I don't go for little scissors or bits. Too sloppy/delicate/complicate/ easy to lose. So the toolset is perfect for me. And the tools lock, which is a great upgrade to my old pst. Good size and weight. It hits the spot.

For us in Germany it’s just perfect! If a knife has a locking feature you have to use 2 hands to open it, all the one hand opening Multitools are not allowed to be carried in public and even the 2h version of the Wave could potentially be confiscated because, with some training, it can be opened one handed as well. So the Rebar, Bond, ST300 and all the other multitools with internal knives are just perfect for us!

After I got my Swisstool, I haven't touched either of my leatherman tools, actually thought about selling them. The quality of leatherman is just not where it needs to be at the price. (It is worth noting that I got the Spirit X at the price of a Rebar, which is more expensive in europe) I also ditched the micra for the mini champ. Smaller scissors but again, vastly better quality. Still hope they make a squirt replacement, loved that thing (disregarding the obvious flaws). Can't imagine getting another leatherman any time soon.

Hello , thanks for the review.👍
I own the Rebar in black/coyote brown color, nice colors, I like it.
The weight of about 180 grams is also great, it is easy to carry on your belt, without ripping your trousers down.
However, the opening of the pliers and tools are very stiff, and also the feel in the hand is not very comfortable.
Another negative point, there are no scissors.
My favorite is the Victorinox Spirit X.
If you have tried that tool, you will never look again at Leatherman , SOG, etc.
The victorinox Spirit X weights about 210 grams, which is still acceptable low.
All tools are razor sharp, and very easy and smooth to open ! High quality !
And all tools are accessible without opening the pliers.
The feeling in the hand is perfect.
So for all readers who are looking for a new multitool, take my advise:
first try the Victorinox Spirit X ! 😉

I've carried a Rebar for years and love it. I've passed it along to my wife now and carry an original LM ST instead. one thing I like about he OG ST over the rebar is that the locking tabs, while harder to unlock provide a much smoother pocket and hand experience for better ergos overall. I've recently made a sheath for the ST that allows me to carry it with one of my tools deployed. I can wear it on my belt, neck or pocket and in this configuration I've finally found a MT that I consider quick and useful enough to replace a dedicated pocket knife if I'm of a mind to do so. it combines the ease of a fixed blade, and gives me a place to store my saw, file, screwdriver etc. on my person without having to put the current use tool away or set it down where it might be forgotten or out of position the next time I need it.

I don't think it's outdated. I mean this is 1 of only 3 Leatherman's which have a ''3D'' Phillips driver (and it's ridiculous calling a Phllips driver 3D as if that's something special, if it isn't 3D it isn't a Phillips driver), the other 2 being the Bond and the Supertool. I mean are normal Phillips drivers now out of date? Are Snap-On, Wera, Bahco etc. all behind the times for still making conventional screwdrivers and bits instead of half profile bits like the ones on most Leathermans?

I like everything about it and it fits nicely in my Fifth pocket in my jeans all the tools being inside are great tools stay cleaner and don't get snagged on stuff ALSO ... I don't really care for the it driver because it's just something else to lose and when I had one with it I never wanted to carry the additional bits anyway so I was always such with flat and Philips regardless

It is wrong to use the "Fake Rolex" as analogy, these Chinese Clones didn't "slap" the word "Leatherman" on their products either, they are just copies after the patent ends, this prevents Leatherman from monopolising the whole market dictating the price, there are cheaper options. It is all about affordability to the masses and if there are cheaper options, then Leatherman is always an outdated product in terms of pricing to these group of people.
You don't need the top notch matrerials like Magnacut to perform a job well, you just need a quality as adequate as reasonably possible and it performs the same, plus much more accessible to the masses and more justify.
It is the same logic as you don't need the high quality Apple iPhone to make a phone call, an Andriod is good enough. Moreover most parts of the iPhone is manufactured in China anyway, couldn't magine what's the cost of iPhone if it is entirely USA made.

It feels like it's too late to reverse decades worth of bad decisions but it's also dangerous to give china that amount of power and like during the wu-flu western countries experienced shortages from any vital products like medicines face-masks etc because it was all made in china and they couldn't ship them out. How about approx. 6.5oz for a full size multitool. Idk any other competing at that weight. Not to mention arguably the best screw driving multi tool on the market. For a reasonably priced adapter you can use any real 1/4” bit or Leatherman bits. The whole tool set is professional in nature. For $40 cheaper and 2oz lighter than the Wave+ just for a one hand accessible knife, dinky little scissors, a micro driver that can only do 2 bits, and a diamond file…. The diamond file is the only real loss but you get a nice poking holes tool in exchange (awl).

  • @Butchthebugman

Off topic, maybe a topic for another video...
Why do you think more multitool manufacturers don't put a "male" 1/4" bit driver in their tools, like the SOG Power Access Deluxe (and I'm sure, others)? I think it's great, because your bit driver only takes up one "slot", rather than 3 or 4, allowing for greater tool density. Is it a strength issue?
    Thanks!

The Rebar is such a huge missed opportunity for Leatherman. I wish they'd make some small changes - also if they offered a in-store customation option to swop out certain blades etc. it would be more awesome. When I got my first Letherman back in like '98/99 one of the selling points was that you could customise the parts easily. Also once you add EU pricing the budget competition is like 1/3 of the cost.. 3 DL7's or a Rebar... Pay a little extra for a Swisstool (which is already much better value)....

  • @GarrettRockey
    @GarrettRockey 6 місяців тому +1

It is outdated in the sense that Leatherman doesn’t care about it anymore. The QC on the Rebar is terrible. The plier head is crazy stiff out of the box; the tension on the tools is either too tight or too loose; and more recently, the handles are misaligned when closed. I sent back my most recent Rebar because the handles were misaligned by about 1/8”. Leatherman sent me a replacement in exactly the same condition. I don’t mind paying extra if I’m getting a well crafted tool - but that just isn’t the case with the Rebar anymore.
