  • The Swanton Pacific railroad used to excite many in California - until it burned in 2020. It seems like everyone in preservation heard the horrible story of what happened; but now, there's a new organization that has been made by former Swanton volunteers to get the 19" gauge that's over 100 years old running again.

Thank you for covering this. I was so saddened when I learned of the fire destruction back in 2020, and the uncertainty of the future for the railroad. There’s been a lot of great things happening in railroad preservation here in California lately, and I am so thankful that these historic locomotives have a new home and will be kept together!

I’m glad the Swanton Pacific Railroad is making a comeback! I was so disappointed when CalPoly announced they were getting rid of the railroad. I almost sent them an email to them telling them not to do it! I eventually forgot to send the message, but now it looks like I don’t need to send it! I can’t wait to eventually visit and ride this railroad! Good luck, Overfair Pacific!

That was a very nice story Mark. I had no idea about these beautiful locomotives. I really liked the full scale details that you and Brett pointed out. Loved those rivets and OMG the wonderful leaf spring suspension. So nice to see the extra special touches down to the marker lamps as well as the melding of older and newer technologies for their time. You said it best Mark, scaled down in some ways, but not all. That’s what makes these so visually appealing to me. Though the fire damage was absolutely awful, it is nice to hear they are to be preserved. Congrats to Molly and her crew on the new location and the commitment to restoration. Like the mythical Phoenix something new and fabulous being reborn out of the ashes. Many thanks to Molly for sharing the story of this very special railroad. And as always so many thanks to you Professor for making yet another fabulous learning moment video. Cheers to you and Molly.

@@Hyce777 You could do a series on miniature or Liliput railroads in Europe. Not only do we have the 600mm gauge miniatures in Belgium, but there are several 15" gauge lines in the UK, the Ravenglass railway and the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway which is the longest miniature line in the world at 13.5 miles long.
Then in some cities in Eastern Europe there are Pionier Eisenbahnen (Pioneer Railways) which are scaled down railroads where youth under the then communist regimes who had interest and ambition in becoming railroad staff later in life could learn the skills needed at a young age, I know there are many surviving examples in east Germany (16 in total, Berlin and Dresden being the longest, Budapest and Eger in Hungary, Chorzow and Poznan in Poland and even closer to the US in Havanna in Cuba there is one. There are more but you can look up the Wikipeadia page on Pioniereisenbahnen. All of these are open to the public to have rides. In Europe there will be English speaking members at most of these railways.

If it wasn’t for the fact the Hawksworth’s were built 30+ years after, I’d have assumed the look/design had came from them!

Such a heartwarming for what’s going to happen with these 19 Inch Gauge Steam Locomotives. These are all amazing steam locomotives despite the fire accident that happened 4 years ago. There were roundhouse fire accidents that happened before, even similar accidents too. But most of those steam locomotives that were involved into them were repaired afterwards. I hope to start seeing these 19 Inch Gauge Trains operating at Santa Margarita Ranch there along with the Pacific Coast Railroad.

The historic Zig Zag railway outside of Sydney was severely damaged by major bushfire in the early 20-teens. Lots of track and rolling stock was lost but the locos survived. They were just a bout ready reopen when Black Summer hit them again 2019
They returned to the rails again last year.

So sad to see the rampage after the fire, I hope they can be soon running again. The pairing with the Pacific Coast Railroad opens lots op opportunities.
It reminds me of the roundhouse fire which happened in 2005 in Nürnberg in Germany destroying many full scale locomotives of the national collection.
Some of these have returned to operation like the replica of the first locomotive in Germany, Der Adler (the Eagle) which ran between Nürnberg and Fürth in 1935 and 01 150, a pacific type. Other locomotives are under restoration, amongst them an electric of 1928 which is a huge effort as all the internals must be made new from scratch or repaired, like wires, electric motors, rectifiers and the transformer, but it will return operational.
Some steam locomotives will return as static exhibits, which they were before the fire, and others operational.
Sadly the stored diesels are lost as damage is beyond repair. a few can be restored as static exhibits but without internals as the wiring and aluminum engine parts which melted in the fire.

    A few questions:
    1) What is that engine in the background @10:23? It looks like a smaller-scale live steamer.
    2) What is the story behind the Hillcrest railroad? You didn't really make it clear where this is. I was able to Google it, but a bit more geographic information would have been appreciated up front.
    3) Where on the Santa Margarita property is the OP going to run? The existing line is less than a mile from downtown Santa Margarita (very useful if an Amtrak stop is ever re-opened), so it would be nice to also be within walking distance.

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  10 днів тому +2

Completely certified, certainly, but probably not much actually needs done to the shells themselves. They're built extremely heavily and it's doubtful the heat caused much damage to the boiler steel itself. There's certainly a lot to assess and could be damage, but hopefully not much. That said they are older engines anyways, and I'm pretty sure the engine that was off-site was getting a new boiler anyway; so that might be the course. Good question.

@@Hyce777 : Nope -- the ASME was founded in 1880. These do -- just barely -- predate the publication of the first ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in 1915, but there were ASME boiler guidelines and standards before that. Some of them became incorporated into Massachusetts state law in 1907, after major factory boiler explosions there in 1905 in 1906; that was the event that really provided the impetus for the committee that produced the BPVC.

ye canny kill steam engines with fire, they were intended tae tame it,
tae be Honest ironically Comifornia is the worst state of rehabiting and renaturing esp. when considered the most Penetrant when it is about "saving the Planet",
saw a video of the Yosemite valley Lumber Railroad back then and now (100 years time span), and other areas in the SoCA region.
after the clear-cutting they dae none till this day tae get any Forest back up,
CA turns intae a full desert with only brush that burn very well esp. when dry,
Instead of marketing bullshyte and smelly warmair, they should Plant trees and terraform the hill sides so water is not running off instead sinking in the ground,
which rises the waterlevel in the ground and makes the ground fertile again for actual plants tae grow, instead of brush and weeds.

If you'd actually visited these hillsides, you'd know that's nonsense. You can't "terraform the hillsides" to keep water from running off without taking down the whole mountain -- they're just that steep. And even if you did, that still wouldn't help when it doesn't rain at all for at least eight months of the year. Besides which, the Santa Cruz mountains were well-forested when they burned, with 100-foot-tall trees; this part of the state is pretty well re-forested.

@@BrooksMoses the nabatians in Jordania did it tae 90` cliff edge some 1000 years ago with chisels and taking plow tae a field is already terraforming, if ye'd theoretical put a plow row tae the side an make this tiny ridges water can be saved in those and get keept there,
If yer got no knowledge donnea mean it's nonsense,
And just because one countie daes donnea mean all are, there are plenty of hillsides in CA they are far larger than Santa Cruz and not living from tourism and wine they got not even looked at.
