Porsche 944 - Trying out a Performance Chip

  • The performance chip finally came in and I decided to try it out in my '88 924S. I wouldn't say that it made a significant difference but it was a lot of fun revving to 7k rpm in second gear. I also really like the sound the engine makes with the chip, seems a lot more aggressive but that could be all in my head...

    I almost forgot this video, the satisfying look when one gets above 5000 rpm's. The smell of gasoline and slightly melting rubber. It's so good to hear an actual 944 engine builder saying he hits the windshield (rev limit) now and then, too. I always get's the evil eye from anyone on my right side(and occationally outside) when that happens and nothing I say can calm them down. I'm gonna have this video ready next time.. It's good with a little blow out isn't it. They were built for it, and the guys that shift before 4000 and complain about acceleration haven't got a clue.

    I got a "racing pros" chip for my 88 924S years back on ebay for like 30-40 bucks, it actually made a huge difference for me.

      Nice! I couldn’t tell much difference in my 88 924S but I should try this chip in my 1984 944 to see if it helps. It’s no where near as peppy and could use a chip.

    I bought a chip for my 87 924s so i hope to notice a difference, unlike boosting a 1988 924s that already had more hp than the 1987. Great video to show how its done, I was about to give up doing the install myself until I found your instructional video...Thanks!

    I have the Authority chip in my ‘90 S2 Cab (PO installed it with K&N air filter). When he sold me the car, he gave me the original chip and all original parts....often wondered what the car felt like “pre-chip”, as the Authority site claims 38hp gain! At 64, I’m pretty happy with my cars performance--particularly the handling--can’t imagine that you wouldn’t feel a 38 hp difference. I enjoy your videos....especially as you give these cars the respect due a platform that arguably saved Porsche’s financial ass in the the 80’s....a respect that rarely comes from the 911 crowd. Thanks much.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому

      Yep, you should definitely feel 38hp, especially when you only have 210-sih HP, that's nearly a 20% increase in power! I've only driven a few S2's but they always felt like they had a nice power band. I always felt were a little nicer to drive in traffic than a turbo, so an extra 38 hp would be amazing! Thanks again for subscribing!

    Looks convenient. I was recently swapping a few diff chipped ecu's on my 99 Passat 1.8t aeb. I had to buy some vag com software to adapt the throttle body everytime I switched or it wouldn't even start. But now that I have it all I can switch between stock, Malone tuned and apr tuned anytime I want. The next step is to get a WOT box so I can get 2 step capabilities.

    With a 77 924, an 87 924S and a
    88 924S-Special Edition, the SE stands out above the rest. Lighter and 160hp with a chip from previous owner, and the factory M030 pkg, it's the fastest and handles the best. On the SE without a catalytic converter sold in Spain as The Spirit, put out 170hp. You want to go faster? Remove the Cat, remove the weight on these cars and add a chip. It will Def move faster then and become more enjoyable to drive at a track event and spirited driving on a daily basis.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому

      Nice collection! I have a few '87 924's and the '88 in the video, so I agree the '88's are much more fun! That said, I have seen that 170hp quoted on the wikipedia page for the Spirit... but getting that kind or extra power from 158 hp is quite a stretch for just removing a cat. That sounds like a Honda owner wrote it. I mean, corvette owners barley get 3 or 4 hp from cat deletes so I would expect our cars to only gain 1... not even 2.

    • @happyfox711
      @happyfox711 4 роки тому

      @Mr. Eric Moonwalk Exactly what I was going to say, the Euro version (without Cat) has 13hp more, according to Porsche manuals.

    Sorry if it is a silly question but how hard can you push these 2.5 engines before it is 'thrashing' them? Thanks man, great vid as always!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому +11

      Its not really a silly question. Taking to the car to the rev limit was what they were meant for. This car has been my daily driver for the past three years, but I had gone through the engine prior to that. I wouldn't just by one of these cars and beat on it without through maintenance. That said, pushing the car to its limits won't hurt it; the weak spot of these cars is the clutch and transaxle. So if you start trying to do burnouts or clutch dumps you're going to start breaking things. I hope that helps!

    Great video as usual. Can i swap a stock 88 DME into my 86 944 and boost the power a bit?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому +1

      Porsche has noted that the fuel management changed for the 88 model year so in theory, yes. However you won’t get as much power without the higher compression pistons. Not to mention that the 88 DMEs are rather scarce. Probably better off buying a racing chip for your model for less

  • @pmgear

    So where does the 5hp show up in the RPM range, if it is at 7000rpm it is pretty useless for everyday driving I think, maybe it is just me driving like an old lady. Also, 5hp, don't think that I as a novice porsche 944 driver would not feel it.
    Thanks for the video as always, and I really like your new haircut!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      Its supposed to add power throughout the rev range with the max hp at 6000-6500. That said, there might be two maps, one for daily driving and then another for WOT, so that might be why I can't really tell a difference cruising around. Thanks!

      Thanks for your concern. I worked in IT for decades and have all of that stuff however no one ever uses them, except perhaps beginners. We just make sure to touch something like the case or anything metal beforehand to discharge. Half the time I'm having to repair a DME in the floorboard of a car on the side of the road and they're always just fine. Thanks!

    My sons chip did the same thing. More power over 4,000 and have to run super unleaded. Advanced the timing. Not sure if it changes the fuel curve though.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      The paperwork says it advances the timing and only requires 91 octane. I don't believe this one changes the fuel map either. Around here we don't have 91 octane so I have to run 93 normally in this car since is an '88 that already requires 91. What year is your car and did that chip seem to make a significant difference?

    • @rdnakx250
      @rdnakx250 6 років тому +1

      85.5 model with Xtreme chip. It is definitely faster than stock. We have 2 85.5's and the other has no perf chip. Interesting to see that the 88 model ecu has the performance already nearly maxed out but those things are expensive on ebay.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      Awesome! I know whenever I drive an earlier car it always feels much slower. I'm interested in trying these chips in earlier cars just to see what its like... so you may see more videos where I just order a chip and try it out. That said, I've been on mountain runs and earlier cars can't keep up at all with my '88. I daily drove a 1987 924S before turbocharging it and I can really tell a difference and prefer the 1988 924S much better than the stock 1987 924S.

    • @rdnakx250
      @rdnakx250 6 років тому +1

      I read somewhere that Porsche was very conservative on the settings to pass emissions testing so there was definitely more power to find with revised mapping. My son also did a magnaflow cat and performance muffler. Power is good but it is a bit too loud for my taste. He even put in a resonator to quiet it down a bit. Porsche even made the car sit too high to meet the US bumper height regs. from the factory.

      I started out in the Rx-7 side of things... my first when car I was 16 was an 1981 Rx-7 so I have a soft spot for the narrow bodies. My friends dad had a 944 growing up and I didn't see a 924 until I was nearly 17 and so it was more exotic to me... never cared for the 2.0 liters though. The 924S is the sweet spot and so I currently own about 5 of them, which a lot of people joke is more than anyone else in North America lol. Your 951 looks like a beast! Thanks for pointing me towards you channel!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 роки тому

      I would like to see a real back to back dyno just to see. I mean if you really could get an early car that makes 143 hp to make 165 hp I'm not really sure you'd feel it. That said, I still use this in my car despite not noticing any real difference in power just for the rev limiter bump. Even though most of the time I shift long before that because I can feel the power dropping off, it is nice to have some headroom when playing around sometimes.

    • @edredas

      I'm going to try this soon and post my results. According to the manufacturer this chip just advances the timing, but according to Porsche, the '88 had the fuel management tweaked as well. So I would think the '88 DME would be better but there are a lot of other variables to consider... for instance, the chip is far cheaper than a used '88 DME and has a higher red line. I hope that helps!
