  • When the hapless Sing and his dim-witted pal Bone try to scam the residents of Pig Sty Alley into thinking they're members of the dreaded Axe Gang, the real gangsters descend on this Shanghai slum to restore their fearsome reputation. What gang leader Brother Sum doesn't know is that three legendary retired kung fu masters live anonymously in this decrepit neighborhood and don't take kindly to interlopers.

Oh my, this is gonna be gooooood. The answer to every "why" question you will have (because y'all almost always start your sentences with why? haha just playin')is "Because it's a kung-fu movie." They're having fun with stereotypes and tropes that are found in old kung-fu flicks (and a lot of other media), and just greatly overdramatizing things for comedy. Love it!

Guys, Welcome to KUNG FU HUSTLE!! The answer to a lot of your questions are layered within a plethora of Easter Eggs and movie references including but not limited to: Dragon Ball Z, Road Runner, Bugs Bunny, The Big Green Catterpillar, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Fu Manchu, The Monkey King, Wong Fei Hung, Zu Warriors and The Five Deadly Venoms.
    Two important notes:
    1. The Football squash was a reference to Stephen Chow's previous movie Shaolin Soccer. It was a message to fans that there would be no sequel to that movie despite its record breaking success.
    2. The action choreography was directed by Grandmaster Yuen Woo Ping, who is famous for designing the action scenes for The Matrix, Kill Bill, The Drunken Master, Fist Of Legend and many others.

So he charged that amount to see if the child has a heart of sacrifice and determination. Just subscribed to your channel. The next one you should react to is shaolin soccer. It is quite awesome and produced by the same Stephen Chow. Hillarious till this day 😂

This is the story of a man, destined by the heaven to be a hero. No matter how desperate he was to revert to crime, prevented by divine intervention, somehow he just couldn't do any crime even though he wanted to. In a lot of chinese story there are many stories like this, usually a deva or buddha disciple, he got punished and reborn as a human with no memory, who has to suffer and remember his true self and why he got punished, and only after he repent and realized why he was punished, he can claim his power back. Stephen Chow did a similar story in God of Cookery, but this time he removed the 'obvious' heaven part. The main character here has to remember his destiny (to be a hero) and only then the god would 'return' his power. And the part at the end where he as if returned to being a kid is a symbol of him returning to heaven and reclaimed his godhood.

"Why this movie got deep out of nowhere", I think this is the correct statement about Stephen Chow film style or humor, He said by himself. Others call him comedy king, but he doesn't understand that, all his life he has filming in more tragedies story than comedy, his classic films of the 90s Always like that, There are two typical movies about this: "King of Comedy" and "A Chinese Odyssey" they are sad and sad, But we keep laughing when we watch it as a kid, we thought is ridiculous , until we grow up and think about it We cry, we finally understand.

I love when movies are equal homage and satire (Kung Fu Hustle, Cabin in the Woods, and Hot Fuzz off the top my head). So for this movie, it was partially making fun of some of the stuff in kung fu movie, all while being a really good kung fu movie. Cabin in the Woods makes fun of horror movies while being an excellent horror movie. And I think Hot Fuzz does the same with action/thriller/buddy cop films. There should be a word of it.

You should watch Shaolin Soccer (2001) next. Since you enjoyed this one.
Shaolin Soccer (2001) is also brilliantly
Directed, Produced, Written, and Acted as main character by the legendary Stephen Chow himself. Same as Kung Fu Hustle (2004).
Please get the original cantonese language version, hong kong version.
That's means preferably not the Americanized version (which is also cantonese spoken, but they edit the chinese characters by overlaying with english text, dubbed over the original sound effects, changed some music to english music, and simplified the english subtitles). WORST of all, they cut down 22 minutes of the original movie length (original 102 minutes to 80 minutes americanized version)
Stephen Chow made both films emphasizing for the international audience in mind. It is his first big break into western market. He is already very famous and well known in Hong Kong, south-east asia, Asia in general. We love his unique style and humour.
By the way, Stephon Chow announced to the public that he has finished the story draft for Shaolin Women's Soccer. He is auditioning for female actresses and we are finally getting another Stephen Chow directed movie (which is very, very rare nowadays), which is also a sequel to Shaolin Soccer (2001), after 22 years.

So when he is fighting the fated lovers, he is shown punching far faster then the husband to show he outclasses the couple, then when The One is fighting the beast - he is faster then The Beast...superiority by the same measure.

Stephen Chow is the brilliant director of this film, and also it's star actor. It's a very well constructed film and really took the old kung fu movie formula and took it to the next level. But cinematically it is stylish, great special effects (even the Looney Tunes moves) and great use of visuals and symbolism to add dimension to the story and underlying meanings, like the main character cocooning in his wrapped bandages as he transformed into his higher more powerful self. I knew this film was deep when the landlady blew the musician-assassins away and the landlord drew a Yin-Yang ☯ symbol in the ground with their feet when he swung them around at 26:24 into the video. (From Chinese philosophy, Yin-Yang symbol represents duality, such as female-male, dark-light, heaven-Earth, as an indivisible whole. So the landlady & landlord are depicted as extremely powerful personifications of these universal opposing energies that when united can become greater than the sum of their parts.)

The landlady was in a James Bond film when she was younger. She played one of two schoolgirls who protected Bond in "The Man With The Golden Gun" when he escaped the martial arts studio. ua-cam.com/video/CswyGUZR3Ew/v-deo.html

When he fell on the window and landlady grabbed her husband by the hair, it looked like they genuinely fought for real. That looked genuinely violent lmao

Once the tall dude stood up, I think you two really dialed into what was going on. This is one of my favorite movies. Steven Chow wrote, directed, and starred in the movie. He's gone on to be arguably the most successful director in Chinese history.
If you want a serious action movie that is also excellent, try "Hero" starring Jet Li.

They shouldn’t watch Fearless starring Jet Li.. and then Hero.

The first rule of Stephen Chow movies: don't go into it expecting anything too serious!
Over the years he has proven to be an excellent comedic filmmaker, as well as a top-notch storyteller, especially with his ability to almost seamlessly weave even comedic characters into otherwise romantic and/or serious narratives.
As far as what to see next (assuming you two plan on exploring his movies), everyone is recommending 'Shaolin Soccer' - and _it is easily one of his best_ - I'm going to recommend 'The God of Cookery' instead. He has an excellent back catalogue either way! 🤣

I'd always thought of this movie as a live-action Looney Tunes, but y'all are right: it's a live-action anime!
