WTF Happened to Billy Bob Thornton?

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Billy Bob Thornton is an unlikely but enduring movie star. He blasted onto the scene as a character actor in movies like One False Move and Tombstone before his 1996 passion project, Sling Blade, earned him a best screenplay Academy Award while also netting him a Best Actor nomination. Made for just over $1 million, it was a solid box office hit, grossing 30 times its budget, and from there, Thornton’s career went into high gear. While his directorial career went on the back-burner after Harvey Weinstein cut his Cormac McCarthy adaptation, All the Pretty Horses, to shreds, his acting career was white-hot, earning a best-supporting actor nomination for Sam Raimi’s A Simple Plan and leading movies such as Monster’s Ball, Friday Night Lights, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and netting high profile supporting roles in Armageddon, Primary Colors, Bandits, Love Actually and so many more.
His career really gained momentum when he signed on to play the lead in perhaps his most iconic film, Bad Santa, which became an R-rated Christmas classic. At the same time, the public became fascinated by Thornton’s eccentricities, including the fact that he and his then-wife Angelina Jolie wore pendants of each other’s blood and his well-known aversion to antique furniture. There’s also his viral CBC interview in which he sparred with the now-cancelled Jian Ghomeshi, but through it all Thornton has stayed firmly on the Hollywood A-list, with him especially prominent on TV thanks to roles on Fargo and Goliath. We dig into his career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Brad Hamerly), narrated and produced by Taylor James Johnson, and edited by Adam Walton.

Billy Bob in Fargo was one of the best mini movies Ive seen
Yes this show is amazing
Omg YES!
His role in 1883 was badass too, short but fucking awesome
One time he stopped into our IHOP in Pueblo,Colorado. They said he was very nice and talked to everyone there including the cooks, and then went on his way. What a guy
Once I ran over the Wendy's speakerbox in Pueblo so badly with a camper that it was in a million little pieces, yet it still worked somehow.
My younger cousin and I we're dropped off at a theatre by our grandma in late 2003 - and somehow was let into Bad Santa. (Probably passed on seeing ELF) Don't remember how - we were too young, especially him. Regardless we never laughed so much inside a theatre before, gave us great memories - as we grew up it was our most quoted movie ... until Step Brothers came out.
You guys watched film on your own when you were young guys . Wow thats great .
@@jarmangill5911 lol I guess thinking back I was 17 or close to it so that’s the age to get into Rated R movies right? Either way we had no idea what the movie was and just randomly picked it - glad we did haha
@@jarmangill5911 that was before the cell phone corrupted and took over our society
I used to watch that on satellite with my grandma when I was maybe 12. She laughed her ass off throughout.
@@notrandymarsh lol nice she gets it!
A Simple Plan is a unbelievably good under rated movie that just kind of came and went at the box office but it’s really deep and thought provoking
Yes, it was on BBC catchup for eons. A great move about a zillion ways to screw up a crime.
@@LivingLegendMe Not just that but shows how money and greed can corrupt a otherwise decent man’s soul very quickly.
it was
One of my favorite movies a instant classic
Agree. If you have seen a simple Plan, U turn and bad santa knowing it is the same actor. That is mind blowing.
He is one of those people that are immensely talented but I don't think I would ever want to meet him.
Why? He's a great conversationalist.
@@Warmfireandtea Well Lena, I dread to find out what he wants to talk about.
We all know why Monsters Ball is so Re watchable
All jokes aside how Billy never ended up in a Tarantino movie still blows my mind
Probably has a whole lot to do with his attitude and ego

Bad Santa is literally one of the funniest comedy's ever!!!
1 and 2 , both had me crying laughing
You forgot Hearts Afire tv show back in the 90s with the late Markie Post and John Ritter; who put John in his Sling Blade movie. It was a short lived show but that's how I first remember him. I was so impressed he did not forget his TV family.
I like Billy Bob, I think he's way underrated, he can play many roles, many different characters. Sling blade, the Fargo series and and Goliath, just shows his versatility as an actor, the guy can do it all, and he's doing something right, he has Angelina Jolie druling all over him. Billy Bob's got it going on.
Truly interesting how many people insist on the inappropriate, unoriginal use of the word "underrated."
@@bbmtge yeah it irks me. He’s perfectly rated. He was a household name for a long time and pretty well respected. Seemed like he was in everything for awhile there.
@@TyyTheFlyGuy Good points. I did not care for Sling Blade but thought he was an outstanding in Fargo.
This man for a while between the late 90s and early 2000s was the luckiest man alive. He was dating Angelina Jie in his prime and also making that scene with Hale Berry in Monster's Ball😂.
But also making really great performances like in A simple plan, Primary colors, Armageddon, Sling Blade but also really fun and hilarious roles like in Bandits & Bad santa
He deserves an Oscar for not actually sticking his d*ck in Halle Berry in that scene😂
Indeed

I wonder if Canada has forgiven him for that radio interview that went awry. I was living there at the time and Canadians were furious at his rudeness to the host (who, to be fair, simply mentioned in introductions that Thornton had made a movie or two). And Thornton's band was kicked off the Willie Nelson tour before the big Toronto show.
Life lesson: when in Canada, just be polite.
No one cares about the CBC outside of a very small percentage of Canadians and the host (Ghomeshi) turned out be a horrible human no? Defund the cbc and bulldoze any remnants of it.
We forgave ole Billy Bob. We let him back into Canada(Calgary) to make the TV mini series "Fargo" and the that particular host later turned out to abuse women for his sexual pleasures. Billy Bob's rudeness paled in comparison to the sexual assaults that CBC host had done.
Always be polite no matter where you are on Earth
@@davidbuswa9425 Wow, I think I had heard about that host, but hadn't made the connection it was the same guy who interviewed Billy Bob.
@@johnchedsey1306 Dude had rough sex with the actresss that played Lucy in The Trailer Park Boys" and had sex with an underaged Sarah Polley("Anne of Green Gables" star). Dude is a creep and deserved to lose his job
I’ll never understand how he lost the Emmy for best actor in a mini series or movie
I recently went on a Coen Brothers movie watching Binge. "The Man Who Wasn't There" was definitely amongst their top 5. So good.
I've done that in the past. I don't agree that Intolerable Cruelty is one of their worst movies though as there is enough going on to make it enjoyable for me.
I’m happy they mentioned princess Mononoke ❤
One of the grades he’s had some great performances but for me, it will always be bad Santa. It’s one of those few movies that I can watch anytime and still sit down and go through the whole movie and enjoy it like it. I’m watching it for the first time.😊
Bad News Bears part 2?
Listen to the Terry Zwigoff interview about working with him. He compares him to Tuco Salamanca.
Billy Bob Thornton in Fargo was amazing!!!!
The Ice Harvest deserves more than a single mention. That movie is the definition of underrated.
“I slept with a woman who wasn’t clean” - bad Santa
She wasn't elfie
If rockstar ever decided to make a live adaptation of grand theft auto I think that billy bob thornton would make an perfect portrayal of Trevor Philips.
He even looks the part too just like Steven Ogg.
Why the fuck wouldn't you just get Steven ogg? Wtf?
Monster's ball is the best.i cried when heath ledger ask" do you hate me dad"
A simple plan is a classic for me
What happened was he is notoriously hard to work with and has a tendency to burn bridges.
His work on Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town was breathtaking. ✋😩
My favorite actor. I saw The Boxmasters last summer. Great musical act.
I think some of his most underrated movies were "The man who wasnt there" & "Pushing tin". Always enjoyed those
The Alamo is criminally underrated
Bad Santa will forever be one the funniest Xmas films! Move over Home Alone!
Billy bob is the best caracter in fargo
Season 2/3/4 where fun to watch but never catched the quality of the first one
Billy Bob. He's an artist. An uncompromising artist who's adapted to the business of Hollywood. Or maybe. the business adapted to him. Ya gotta respect his work.
Amazing channel, you are doing fantastic work
Despite his incredible acting career, his biggest accomplishment will always be that he somehow made a prime Angelina Jolie fall head over heels for him. That's legend status right there.
Billy Bob Thornton is an amazing actor! I'll watch anything he does!
I love Billy Bob, he's a truly great actor and certainly one of the most interesting to come out of Hollywood. Although I didn't realize he'd been in an Adam Sandler film, the poor bastard. It just goes to show some of the hardships one has to endure when climbing the Hollywood ladder.
Bad Santa is my favorite Billy Bob movie
Sling Blade and Bad Santa, are some of the best films ever.🙏
Bandits was really good, I forgot all about that gem
you should do a whole video on blood in blood out such a great movie that everyone should see
Harold Ramis (famous director and actor) regretted having to work with him, as did quite a few directors. I like some of the movies hes been in, but on a personal level, hes not someone id want to sit down with and drink a few beers. Just saying. I think hes full of himself.
An absolute legend!!
Could you please do 'WTF happened to Joseph Gordon Levitt'?
He was great recently in The trial of the Chicago 7. But the last movies I have ever enjoyed by him were The night before & The walk
Oh man, so many movies to re watch now and a few new ones too, hell I just realised I never got around to finishing Fargo season 1
Sling Blade is a Banger!
To say Mr. Woodcock wasn't a good movie is blasphemy in my eyes
I need to find more of his movies.
Wife and I just finished season 1 of Fargo for the first time and then today this!
What happened is, he lost her to Brad Effing Pitt
Would be cool to see one with Richard Gere.
That's ironic being that he can't see anything 🤣
UMM??
I can’t believe billy bob Thornton was in princess Mononoke! I knew him from his relationship was Angelia Jolie, honestly looking back on it, their relationship was ahead of it’s time.
Why did you skip waking up in Reno?
Great guy, and awesome ending to a video 😊
the man who wasn’t there is one of my all time favorite films
I know this was a year ago, but I had to throw something in that I felt needed to be said. If you haven't seen Homegrown or Bandits, see them. The former is an example of a large ensemble done right. The latter is a quirky take on a caper gone wrong
I still really enjoy to rewatch Bandits & Bad santa thanks to his performances
can only think of this dude in bad santa
He's been in a series called " Goliath " and it's brilliant ....that's what's happening lol
The Alamo is highly underrated. I think Billy Bob Thornton played a more convincing Davy Crockett than John Wayne.
Let's be real here. Thornton is a great actor and John Wayne is genuinely bad.

Hey Joblo, I love your videos. Could you please do a “WTF happened to” Video on Asia Argento. That would be awesome.
I ❤️ the narrator's voice. So soothing. I could use him as white-noise. 😴 💤 (Taylor James Johnson)
WTF Happened to Billy Bob Thornton? Billy Bob lives life. I expect he doesn't worry often or very much about what anybody else thinks about him, privately or of his public performances. He seems to be a person that looks at or dreams up a project and acts on it based on his impression with little to no regard as to what others might think. It's very liberating to be your own person and live life your way. Billy Bob is tops at both of his crafts with me.
Bad Santa is one of my favorite movies. I think I was 11 when it came out lol
at 2x speed I thought you were speaking in slow motion
I recentrly watched Tombstone and did not realize BBT was in it, he looks so different!
I grew up around ppl that acted just like him in tombstone. loved the fact that was a real guy and Wyatt Earp really did bitch slap him and throw him out by his ear.
You should do Danny trajo next if you haven't already
I think he was a bit wasted in The gray man this year with Ryan Gosling & Chris evans. He could have been a great supporting role but ended up just a forgettable part in a forgettable movie
Intolerable Cruelty is great, its far fromthe worst Cohen bros movie. BBT is a classic & I hope we get to see more interesting, surly characters for years to come.
A family thing is an amazing movie one of the best Robert Duvall performances
If Doctor Strange was made 20 years ago he could have made an excellent pick.
He was great in Fargo
I love his movies. Billy Bob and his band the Boxcutters or whatever are coming nearby in June. This is why we are not going.
He is F'n great. The Fargo character was one of my favorites
Bad Santa is a Christmas staple for me, fuck Home Alone lol
he has been relatively quiet
Nothing he's a great actor.... I watched him in the series on Amazon called "Goliath "which just ended. It was really good, he was also in a movie with Aaron Taylor as a drug addict.
He’s fantastic in Alamo(2004)

You mean the show that's mentioned toward the end of the video? The show that they inform you he won a Golden Globe for?
Just say you didn’t watch the video 🤡
I love Billy Bob's comedy work 🤷
Do a one on Tony Cox
He would be great and a remake of grumpier old men ..... Truth I normally dont advocate remakes but I can see that. I was happy with the new hellraiser
A Simple Plan is heartbreaking man.
Well Michael Bay knows what his strengths are and plays to them. He's no Nolan, he knows it and that's perfectly fine.
He has had a, deep impact lol, on the advancement and progression of special effects in the industry as a whole.
This guy sounds like the luckiest guy alive. So much opportunity. I’m gonna be a MLB baseball star like babe Ruth… nah guess I’ll try be a movie star, nah guess I’ll be a county star, Nahh guess I’ll marry the hottest woman in the world at the time and be a tabloid star. Nah, guess I’ll become Santa Claus.
Met him. Odd man.
Goliath was badass!!
It's weird that someone is a fan of The Big Bang Theory.
Have a blessed day.
he quit drinking and opened a bar on the beach !
Can you do wtf happens to the will feral movie land of the lost ?
Nice vid🙏🏻
Where’s the music?
He just hasn't been the same since that Thomas Wayne biopic.
when you live in your own ass it is hard to invite people over.
What about Mandy? He was the lead in that too
Look up the video of the director of bad Santa discussing working with Billy Bob Thornton and you might have a different opinion about him and the movie
Armageddon is still awesome to watch. As is The Rock. Michael Bay will always have those.
Nice change of thumbnail
We all know what happened to him - he was starring in "A Hard Wayne Will Fall" when he was killed by Clayface.
It would be nice if the announcer took the topic seriously instead of laughing at himself through the video.
He's currently running for the senate in PA
I feel like Billy Bob could’ve been a great racist character in either Django or Hateful Eight. I think Tarantino could definitely help him make a hell of a comeback!
I always loved BBT's work. Not his music, never heard it but it's cuntry weston so it sucks.
What about Goliath?
