  • Adam unboxes the Max Rebo concept maquette replica that's part of Regal Robot's new Star Wars Archive Collection! This recreation of Phil Tippett's original sculpt of Max Rebo was created using digital scans of the original artifact, and a great example of the kind of concept sculpture used for production. Adam admires how beautifully it's painted, and its wonderful details from top to bottom!

    When I was in middle school, I got into a huge argument with another Star Wars nerd about Max Reebo's leg-arms. The internet wasn't an easily accessible thing back then, so I had to show him my VHS copy of "From Star Wars to Jedi" to prove him wrong.
    Thanks for letting me relive that!

      Until today I always thought they were arms (probably because of the toy I had). Even still you have to look pretty close to see he's sitting on a pad, and not behind the organ.

    As a surface-level fan, I had no idea that Max's "arms" were actually legs (as did all subsequent artists of him, apparently). This certainly makes his design a lot more interesting and unique than just "blue elephant-man". It's a shame that uniqueness was completely lost on film.

Theres must have been 100s and they walked George in and said "hopefully he's here somewhere" and GL just started looking over them all, some just heads, some full bodies, and eventually narrowed it down to 2 he liked different aspects of and asked if it was okay to mash them together. Will always respect how much GL wanted to hear from people in the room.

    Mr. Savage, have you considered the possibility that Max Reebo’s locomotion might be curled up as a ball and moving as a sphere? With the suction tips on his (her?) appendages, perhaps Max is able to climb and swing about from high ceiling surfaces from location to location … and his enormous gluteus maximus is biologically adapted to cushion a return to solid ground? Even the name - ‘Reebo’ - sounds ‘round and rolling’ descriptively. I think it’s pretty common knowledge that Mr. Lucas named his characters very reminiscent of what they looked like and what their expected behaviour was to be? Just some thoughts from a crazy old person …

    • @googleuser3163
      @googleuser3163 Рік тому

      He's been shown standing up and walking around in recent media (in his proper, no-arms design) and he looks somewhat like a penguin. Also I'm fairly sure it's been disclosed that his suction-tips are how he takes in foods, with his proboscis being a sensory organ.

      There's a somewhat complicated history on this, based on the production stuff and the shape of the original costume, he's supposed to be seated and playing using his feet. However later interpretations of the character make the claim he's actually standing in an enclosure that holds his keyboard and playing with his hands.

    Everyone complains about the new Star Wars but in my opinion the downfall began with the falling out between Lucas and his long time collaborator Gary Kurtz. This character of the blue "space jazz musician" is very emblematic of the sharp drop off in quality the franchise would suffer from that point forward.
    This little blue figure is a concept for a toy design. There is nothing alien or lifelike or logical in it's design. It's just cute and blue. That's all and that's all Lucas cared about anymore. Will the kiddies think it's cute and adorable? Everything Lucas created from this point forward was "how can I make this into a toy?"

      Was going to say the same thing about ROTJ. Max Rebo was a 'jump the shark' moment for everyone I know who saw the movie when it came out. The Ewoks original design had scary rat like faces yet were good guys. Just had to make them cute too. This is when the franchise started to die.

    • @googleuser3163
      @googleuser3163 Рік тому +1

      Must disagree, at least on the Rebo design. The Kenner toy is certainly cute and un-alien. But the actual Max puppet, with it's black shark-eyes, fleshy skin and bizarre armless physiology is as unsettling, original and creative a design as any of the best creatures from Star Wars. In fact, it's one of the few that really deviates from the "man in a Halloween costume" visage. The blue hue only adds to the uniqueness of his already strange design. I think the rest of the band also rank as some of the best character designs the series has to offer, each one feeling a lot more like a creature from another world than, say, a big yeti or a guy in a devil mask.
