I am a retired public school teacher and principal, and have first-hand experience and inside knowledge of area school districts and programs. I grew up in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh (graduated from North Allegheny), and now live in Mt Lebanon with my amazing wife and four children (one in college and three in Mt. Lebanon schools). I love travelling (especially to Disney), great food/drink (coffee snob), and love playing/watching sports (PNC Park is the BEST).

    Is Pittsburgh in the midwest? A question that strikes more debate than perhaps you would think at first glance. What is your opinion? Please leave your reasoning and evidence in the comments below. (Also, if you have any new ideas for video topics, please let me know in the comments.)

    To somebody from the Midwest, Pittsburgh feels like the Midwest. To somebody from the east coast, Pittsburgh feels like the Midwest.

    • @markknowspittsburgh
      @markknowspittsburgh  Рік тому

      That makes sense - which is why Pittsburghers don't know how to feel about it because it is all they know. Seems like more people from outside of Pittsburgh have more opinions about this topic than native Yinzers.

    Great video! Pittsburgh is its own unique city!! and the map at 3:02 is the most accurate in defining the different regions of the United States. But in conclusion I would say that Pittsburgh is a mix of the Rust Belt, Appalachia and the Northeast.

    Born and raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, I would I have to say North Appalachia. We are the original "Gateway to the West." We are neither East Coast or Midwest.

    I grew up in Pittsburgh and never gave what region we were in much thought. However, I now live on the East Coast and I can say culturally, Pittsburgh is EXACTLY like Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Milwaukee than NYC, Boston, or Philadelphia. State lines mean nothing. It is the local culture that determines what region of the country you live in.

    • @markknowspittsburgh

      Yes I think industry and the economy plays a larger part than location. For example, Columbus is not very midwest. It grew later and it is kind of boring and without alot of character of any kind.

    Pittsburgh is an Appalachian City. It's not Eastcoast or Midwest. And it's not a Great Lakes city. The Appalachian Region Commission long ago determined that Pittsburgh has always been an Appalachian town then city. It sits right on the Allegheny Plateau which is part of the Appalachian Mountains. Culturally it's definitely Appalachian. And the Pittsburgh language is unique to it's own with it's Scotch/Irish roots. Nowhere else in the country speaks Pittsburghese. Geographically, Pittsburgh is the largest city in Appalachia.

    • @markknowspittsburgh
      @markknowspittsburgh  3 роки тому

      You are not wrong. Any thoughts on why Pittsburghers themselves refuse to identify as Appalachian? Perhaps classism?

    Fun fact: Pittsburgh was founded as an VIRGINIAN town not a Pennsylvanian town. The entire Southwestern corner of what is now PA was originally part of the 1607 Virginia Colony until 1786. West Virginia did not exist until it split from Virginia during the Civil War in the 1860"s.

    An interesting question. As someone who lived in Chicago before moving to Pittsburgh for three years of high school, I would say it's not Midwest. Pittsburgh is it's own unique place. I think that culturally it has little more in common with the east coast. People are nice to be sure and quite provincial.

    Pittsburgh is PHYISICALLY in the Northeast, But CULTURALLY in the Midwest. I was born and raised in the CITY of Pittsburgh, And I felt more at "home" in Cleveland than I ever did in Philly, Or hell even Harrisburg! (So, it's not JUST size!) it's a different "vibe". Also, in addition to the word "pop" there is also the great word, "jagoff"! If I hear someone use that word, I know they are from one of only two places, Pittsburgh or Chicago!

    The way i see it whatever the largest population city (Chicago-Midwest, NYC-East, LA-west, etc)you’re closest to determines what region you’re in. Pittsburgh is more closer to NYC than it is Chicago but I’d say it really it’s own region more than anything.

    Pittsburgh is officially part of the Great Lakes Megaregion per U.S. Government reporting and it is NOT part of the Northeast, again per the U.S. Government. So regardless of what people in Pittsburgh feel, the U.S. Government considers Pittsburgh part of the Mid-West and Great Lakes region.

    The Midwest--almost. Was furious when John Chancellor the news anchor called Kansas City a midwestern city---it AIN'T!! Mid-Atlantic PA ends at the east bank of the Susquehanna River. Everything west of there is the REAL PA! OK. Pittsburgh should be described as an Upper Ohio Valley City. I HATE how the travel industry describes PA as "Mid-Atlantic" and talks incessantly about Andrew Wyeth, The Liberty Bell, and The Amish. The only Quaker I ever saw in my life until my family moved from Pittsburgh to Boston in 1962 was on an Oatmeal box! To me PA is Steel Mills. Coal Mines, and Mountains! I've been working to disabuse New Englanders of their notions for over sixty years. Philadelphia is the Capital of Greater New Jersey, the state for everything east of the Susquehanna!
