Boston and Philadelphia. Or...Beantown and The City of Brotherly Love. Two major east coast cities in the United States, both part of the Northeast Megalopolis (echo) (mwhahahahahaha) a part of the country that contains more than 17 percent of its entire population, or some 50 million people on less than 2% of the country’s land area.
Both cities are exciting places to live in with a bright future.
Both are two of the oldest cities in the United States. Before Europeans arrived, the Delaware Valley, where Philadelphia is located, was home to the Delaware Indians. Various nations had lived in the area where Boston is currently located, but the Massachusett were the ones mainly around when Europeans came to the area.
Both cities were founded by those seeking religious freedom.
William Penn and other Quakers founded Philadelphia in 1682
Puritans founded Boston in 1630. So yeah, Boston’s about 52 years older.
Both were political, financial, and commercial centers of their colonies. Philadelphia, of the Pennsylvania colony, and Boston, of really all of New England.
Both steadily grew at about the same rates during the colonial era, although Philadelphia always stayed ahead of Boston in population.
Both Boston and Philadelphia saw some action during the American Revolution. Boston saw more violence within the city. I mean, there was the freaking Siege of Boston, which lasted almost a year, in which New England militiamen surrounded British forces within the city. Philadelphia was quiet at first. So quiet that the First and Second Continental Congresses met there and it became the capital of the United States. However, the British captured the city in September 1777 and controlled it until the next summer.
After the Revolution, both cities became industrial centers and each city’s population skyrocketed. In fact, the population of both Boston and Philadelphia steadily climbed and climbed and climbed and climbed until the Great Depression. Since then, it’s been up and down. Now, when I talk about the population of cities, I tend to focus on the METROPOLITAN AREA, man. That’s how you do it, count those suburbs, son. The Boston metropolitan area has 4.8 million people and the Philadelphia metro has about 6 million. Looks like you win, there, Philly.
Chiefs win! Chiefs win! Chiefs win!
eagles won and chiefs won. mr beat is nostradamus.

"Boston also has an impressive transit system for a city its size."
*Shows the Green Line*
It’s also one of the most busiest system in America after nyc
Public transit use per person is much higher in Boston than Philly, for some reason. The T is a decently designed system considering how old it is, but it's over capacity considering the growth of Boston within the past 20 years.
@@prushimush I can't imagine a worst system than septa.
D. San not familiar with septa, but I can’t imagine much worse than the mbta haha
Hey at least it wasn't having "signal issues" or on fire like Orange line usually is.
Philadelphia has Wawa game over
Joey Bradley yes
New England has Cumberland Farms which just isn't as good. Wawa needs to set up shop up here and show them how things are done. I am stuck in New England, please send Tastykakes
We have Circle K's, which in my opinion, are better than Wawa and Cumberland Farms
Whenever I start to see Circle K more often than Cumberland Farms I'm reminded I've driven too far inland in Maine. I prefer "Cumbies" to Circle K, but Wawa over both.
Joey Bradley FACTS!!!!!
I might be bias but philly is beautiful for no reason. Places like valley green, chestnut hill and manyunk

The Wissahickon, Pennypack... The fairmount parks system is a treasure.
Manyuck or Jim Thorpe is the most beautiful place I've seen. Absolutely loved that town
The great names, Schuylkill Expressway. Saw a Pagan's documentary, and the outlaw's accent and syntax were so like my sainted aunt I called my sister. The motorcycle guy said he shot a guy 'downtown, center city'; only one city has that. Saw The Who onstage at a concert in Europe talking about 'water' and how it's pronounced: "everywhere but Philadelphia, where it's called 'water'".
Cedar Park, Queen Village, Wissafrickinhickon!

Ben Franklin left Boston to come to Philly, and the rest is history

Boston has been a better city for like 250 years now
@@M3333C You bumped your head! Philly is the best!💯💪
The reason why Boston apartments are so expensive is because of all the colleges, supply and demand
I am from Boston and chose to attend college in Philadelphia so this was super interesting to me! As a Bostonian it's hard to say but the grid like layout of Philly really makes all the difference to me. Otherwise they are very similar cities that take pride in their storied histories and professional sports teams
I'm a Philly native who has moved to Boston and I agree here. There are several key differences, but the two cities are pretty similar to one another, certainly more like one another than other cities outside of New England. The claustrophobic cobblestone streets, tiny doors and weathered cellar hatches in the North End and Beacon Hill near the State House remind me a lot of Old City in Philly, if not in street layout but general historic architecture and feel.
The grid makes cities much worse for me
grids just have too many stop lights
Boston's more walkable?
@@eleeveeayees3425 No, it's just smaller.
Don't forget to check out my new channel and the video I did with Sami from US101. And what should I compare next?
haha thanks
Mr. Beat Delaware and my state of Rhode Island? They are the smallest states in the union and the first and last of the original thirteen colonies join.
Someone else suggested that awhile back. I think that's a great suggestion.
Mr. Beat That was me, I believe. I suggested it in the first State comparison video. Thanks. XD.
+TheFluttershyFan Oh lol. Gotta represent those small states! :D
I still say either Alaska vs Hawaii or Anchorage vs Honolulu. Two completely opposite city’s politically, economically, and climate wise.
+rnelson299 Heck yeah
Hawaii wins cuz it has more tourist and bigger population and there is a lot of stuff to do there.
Alaska loses cuz from what i know of there barely anything to do there and most if it population lives in the capital (Juneau) and they get sun for a couple months a year
FearMe Pleasez Actually 40% live in anchorage and 9% in Juneau and there is a lot to do here, way better hiking, fishing, hunting. We also have winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow machining and south central Alaska has relatively mild winters. Lol and in Alaska you can actually wind surf on the ocean and the lakes are warm enough for swimming. Oh and we also make up 1/5th of all US land and trust me I’ve been to both Hawaii and Alaska so I know what I’m talking about.
Lots people moving to Philadelphia looks like the city of brotherly love is seeing a revival maybe because is cheaper and better weather. But I just recently moved to philly from NYC and I like it.
Philly reminds me of the old NY. Still gritty as hell here.. glad your liking the city.
Alfred Vinciguerra cheap is always good
Back in the day we would’ve had your head on a stick!
Philly and NYC or both shity cities Alfred probably likes Baltimore as well
Born and raised in philly but Brooklyn is more like home definitely moving there in a few years
My dream school was around Boston, but I’m going to Philly now because I didn’t get in. I’m so excited to see Philly though!
Be careful out here.. philly is great city but its dangerous. Always be aware of your surroundings. Students get targeted for robberies alot. Just be safe out here.
Rhett Pollard bro that depends where you are in Philly lmao

Welcome to Philly~

You’re both right~

Rhett Pollard bro there’s violence everywhere
I'm from Philly (well, the suburbs) and I love my city; it's history, character, food, culture, and sports teams. I've visited Boston twice in my life and had a great time both times! I'm a Phillies fan, but I have a soft spot for the Red Sox as I had a great experience going to a Red Sox game. I also think Boston is one of the most beautiful cities in the country.
Luckily it has been easy for me up here in Boston as a Philly native(Super Bowl notwithstanding - don't worry, I still bleed green), every major team except the 76ers plays in different divisions. "Sawx" fans are passionate and honest people. Boston is a baseball city historically, before the Patriots and the AFL all NFL franchises up here had failed to take off.
Every team that I'm a fan of has a rivalry with a Boston sports team.
Every team thinks they have a rivalry with the Patriots, but Pats fans up here brush them off - they don't consider anyone rivals because they are "the best" in their eyes. It doesn't help that the AFC East is a shitty division(Butt Fumble?). NFC East on the other hand is very competitive.
Sox and Yankees is an old and intense rivalry that will never die. It's still alive. "Stankees" is what they are called up here. There's a little heat between the Celtics and 76ers too, but it's older. Expect it to reignite if the Sixers do well next season.
@@prushimush the rivalry you missed is BRUINS AND FLYERS in the NHL
@@Logg66 Shit, you're right, I completely forgot. I gotta say too Boston is more of a hockey town than Philly(or "Hawkey" as they'd say it with a Boston accent lol). The Bruins being one of the original six NHL teams probably has a lot to do with this. My mom's family are big Flyers fans but hockey isn't as popular in the Delaware Valley as it is up here.
Dallas vs Houston

Henry Dery MacNeil Montreal wins
Living in both I like philly more
Boston sucks
Roland Koliyah I’m from a Boston sub urb and I can agree Boston itself isn’t the nicest place to live most people just live here because of the education
@@Yrgzip0 I live in Dorchester for three years, its the Worst place for Black folks in America.
You will get a lot more for your dollar in Philly. Boston's got a runaway cost of living problem similar to NYC, but it is not a NYC tier city. This could happen in Philly eventually, but it's ~5-10 years away, at least, possibly more.
Dorchester is rough. It's practically segregated block by block, full of Vietnamese, Haitian/Caribbean and old Irish Catholic families, and they all dislike one another. It's also suffering from a big price inflation which makes life difficult for the people born there, and there's a big dope problem on Mass Ave(methadone mile). These people are getting their rents hiked to $1700+ for one unit on a triple decker, and they lack access to decent work. It's kind of sad.
I never been to Boston but philly was trash in my opinion very slummy I guess I just stayed in a shit area “cherry hill”
Can't wait to be back in Philly. Miss it so much. Not many places in the US can compare.
I work and live in NYC.
But go down to Philly EVERY weekend.

Philly is at best the third best city in the northeast region of the US
Philly is a shithole. Cannot wait to leave this drug den. The only great area is Northwest Philly (Manuyunk, Mount Airy, Chestnut Hill etc...) The rest is pure shit

Yeah, I plan on doing that one for sure
They are nothing alike
I first arrived in Boston then moved to brotherly love city..... I love you so much Philly ❤️💙❤️
Philly is a unique and fun City there's always places to go and good food to eat. The History alone is second to none and one of the things i really enjoy about Philly is it's like living in a time machine on a daily basis. The Betsy Ross house and so many other structures, neighborhoods and streets are still here today. You can actually feel and picture the spirits of Ben Frank and others throughout the City especially in the Olde City area - Philly is BEAUTIFUL. 😎
True you can feel the old city vibe while in philly
Boston is better, more history, eateries, and pizza. Philly has "hoagies" or however/whatever those cheese things are called, and not sure how it's spelled.. In Boston they're called, "spukies" I never liked them, so don't know what they're known as in NYC nor Philly
Boston is better overall
@iamlost2 Philadelphia has more history and is a much higher rated food city. It's not even close, actually. Boston is even behind DC now, which was a horrible food city for decades.
@@iamlost2 Boston also is not known for the best pizza.

Its sometimes sunny in boston
You should do a series like this but it's comparing different decades or time periods like the 20s vs the 30's and early 1800's vs late 1800's, etc
+simonster -909 interesting idea!
Do Boston vs. San Francisco please. I've heard many people from both coasts mention how they really are the east and west coast equivalents of each other (in a similar sense as LA is to NYC).
Yeah. Both are enters of innovation (but also with _really_ high house prices)
Nathan Loomis nobody cares about the west coast
no better way to show east coast is the best coast than to compare the two
I'm with you Gary, so I can own oceanfront property in Arizona!!
Can't compare Beantown to SF. Not even close. Beantown 1000x better unless you like living in a cesspool. I'd rather live in a Boston sewer because it's cleaner than the best part of SF. SF is a cool place to visit if you like zombies and enjoy observing the living dead. It's a fun town for a few days BUT then GTFO! Plus, when you leave, you'll appreciate where you live...even if it's in a Boston sewer! Lol.
Video suggestion: The Northeast Megalopolis and Great Lakes Megalopolis compared
+John Smith Great suggestion!
Great Lakes Megalopolis is significantly less dense and not as contiguous as the Northeastern Atlantic Megalopolis. If one is to take the Great Lakes Megalopolis (within the United States only) as being from Buffalo or Rochester and all the way to Milwaukee there are quite a few notable gaps. For example, between Buffalo and Cleveland, then from Cleveland to Toledo and Detroit, and then there's quite a gap between Toledo-Detroit and Southbend, but from Southbend to Milwaukee its largely contiguous.
@@musafawundu6718 Im pretty sure that Toronto is part of the Great Lakes megalopolis tho but I agree tho. As someone who is from and used to live in the Great Lakes Megalopolis region, the only cities that matter r Toronto, Chicago, and Detroit. But for some odd reason, Minneapolis, and Montreal r counted tho. Ig it is to help them compare to the Northeast megalopolis then but idk tho.

@@M3333C well look on the bright side, Philadelphia is nowhere near as poor and dangerous as the nearby cities of Chester PA and Camden NJ.
Marc C lmao you must been to ghetto north Philly then 😂
Robert Preskop have you been to North Philly. But I gotta admit you should stay away from Camden.
Detroit Metro Area vs Cleveland Metro Area, notice Metro Area since a lot of times big cities can skew statistics quite substantially like how Atlanta only has a population of about 400k about 38th in the country, but a metro population of over 5.5 mil or 9th in the country.
Although Boston is near and dear to my heart, if I were to move there, it'd be nice to not pay exorbitant dollars to have a house. Great vid and love the jokes! Go Packers!

Mr. Beat Lol, no way. We’re from Milwaukee, so Packers all the way.
Can't come to New England with that packers crap it's patriots territory.
Philly got Max’s and Fred’s comparison over.
Don’t forget Boston has Harvard and MIT!
Yeah but we have university of penn which is just as good as Harvard and MIT , well that’s a subjective statement because it really matters what you are studying MIT is the holy grail for engineering but No one surpasses U of P in medicine and it has a really highly respected law school on par with Harvard. U of P has the Wharton business school and the highest ranked dental school in the country. It’s a tough argument those two schools you mentioned are really elite. But on the other side of market street there’s Drexel university which as far as name recognition doesn’t come close to MIT but scholastically is ranked in the top ten in engineering studies, and about ten minutes away is temple university which is the number one trauma hospital and medical school in the world. The stuff that was developed in their labs regarding gun shot wounds is so advanced that the U.S Army and Navy send their doctors to Temples campus and hospital to study and learn all the cutting edge procedures before being deployed to a combat zone. You have to understand Temple is in north Philadelphia which is like a combat zone without the Geneva Convention to protect the poor students that come here from some farm in Idaho and have no idea what they just walked into until they experience their first home invasion at gun point. I can’t tell you how many freshmen girls go missing only to be found dead in a abandoned house 50 yards from their dorm building it’s really sad.
Mr Big you’re exaggerating a little much about Temple’s campus, 80% of the area south of diamond st. is gentrified
All Alone really do you live in Philadelphia because I was born and raised, I did a lot of work on the campus , and I live at the far eastern end of Girard ave so I know that part of city well. The whole area around temples campus is not being gentrified and Diamond St. is one of the biggest open drug markets in the city. The only area anywhere near that school that is being gentrified is the part of Kensington where the EL turns , of course Fishtown is nice ,and Port Richmond is one big construction site with half million dollar homes being built in every empty lot available. There is nothing to the North or West that is not a ghetto and to the south you have to go to spring garden street before it’s a nice neighborhood.
& the kids who go to school there cone from Philly💯😁
Mr Big MIT & Harvard are consistently ranked better than UPenn, lol. Nobody would even compare UPenn to those two, easily the best two schools in the world. MIT obviously has a focus on math & engineering, (although Sloan is often rated higher than Wharton), and the Harvard business school is the unequivocal best in the world. Harvard’s medical school is also better than UPenn. Harvard is the greatest school in the world. UPenn is not only behind Harvard & MIT, but also Princeton, Stanford, and Caltech. I can’t believe you’re seriously trying to make the case UPenn could ever come close to MIT in the offered degree choices or Harvard in, well, basically anything. Harvard Law, Harvard Business, Harvard Medical are all obviously way better than UPenn. Boston also has Tufts which has beaten UPenns dental school multiple times, not that anybody really gives a shit about dental schooling anyway. If you have such a love for Philly you’re going to make this outrageous argument I pity you. UPenn and especially Wharton are some of the best schools in the world. They still aren’t as good as MIT or Harvard.
Your channel is very addictive. Thanks for all the great content.

Yes. I was born in Charleston and grew up in Savannah. My father is from Savannah but he was stationed at the Charleston Air Force Base for 4 years in the early 1970s (1st 4 years of my life). Both cities are similar. Charleston is 100 plus years older. Both has good tourism and are ports on the East Coast.
I don't think you should have compared Philly to Boston because except for the historical significance both cities are very different. Shanghai vs Tokyo?
Dallas/Fort Worth and Minneapolis/St. Paul
Philly has the Cheesesteak and Hoagie!
Tasting at least one good Hoagie is a must. The name Hoagie came from Hog Island, which was where the Philadelphia International Airport was built. Many of the workers were immigrant laborers mostly from Italian background. The workers' wives would pack lunch food for their husbands that was based on food from home, but modified to fit what was available to them. It's sort of a cross between a Mozzarella di Bufala e Pomodoro, and Puccia. At any rate, the Philly Hoagie is delicious. The roll can't be doughy....it has to be airy and a little chewy. With fresh tomato.
Charlotte vs Atlanta

i'm in love with your videos BRAVISSIMO !!!
Philly always
Both cities are great but Philadelphia definitely seemed to edge out Boston in more categories. Not to mention the beuty aspects but Philadelphia is Awesome. #flyeaglesfly
Rob D Boston is more beauitful and smarter
Its pretty basic knowledge that Boston is a more reputable, higher ranking city than Philly. Philly is cheaper though. Philly will always be outclassed by cities like Boston, NY, DC, even Pittsburgh in some categories
@@M3333C Philadelphia is a bigger city than all of those except for NYC. Boston is a tier down when you are talking about size and importance.
@@puremercury the opposite is true. You're in denial and biased.
www.bestcities.org/rankings/worlds-best-cities/
Boston and DC both top 20 in the world. Philly hardly top 50.
Philly is a tier or two below Boston and DC as far as reputation, importance, and desirability. Size has nothing to do with the quality of a city. In fact, size is more correlated to poverty and cheap cost of living than any other statistic.
Pittsburgh i said because in sports its way better than Philly
Michael DiSciullo the only thing is that philly is bigger. But you have more of a CITY feel in BOSTON, it’s more crowded, a lot more cultures, and you have to have money to come here. BOSTON is more educated, more densely populated, and more clean. He just said it’s older. And the architecture is better. Philly can compare to Baltimore and St. Louis when it comes to importance. Philly downtown is so small. And i been to Chinatown in Philly. It’s like two blocks 😂. That’s no Chinatown. Trust me I’ve been to Kennsington, university city, south philly, north philly, Wyoming ave ect in philly. And I’m was born and raised in philly. And honestly it’s was boring and extremely trashy. And I felt Boston was more modern in a sense it was for classy professionals or if you have a good income. If your poor go to philly. If you have a career or high class and want a modern clean city feel Boston is for you. Boston is so more advanced. Philly trash. And i lived in both cities. END
you should do Auckland and Wellington NZ
Having lived in both, this sums up the comparison 100%
Boston and Philly are both loyal and prideful cities, iv lived in Boston all 24 years of my life
One word: Cheesesteaks
And I'm from Connecticut :)
Very good... One sugestion: Make video of the Brazil!!
I know we consider the Patriots as a Boston team but Foxborough is closer to Providence than it is to Boston.
5:28 IM PRETTY SURE THAT CHURCH IN PHILLY IS RIGHT BYE MY HOUSE NO JOKE
after 2017 Super Bowl
Me: Philadelphians, it's okay to come out now
Can you compare the boroughs of NY?
Hi Mr Beat, can you do Charlotte vs Atlanta
What about the Philadelphia Union soccer team?
also the wings
Kyle Horsch Nobody cares about the union
@@cubby530 you must be from Boston 😂
Kyle Horsch no im not I’m from Philly and an eagles super fan I just don’t like soccer
Miami vs Tampa
Love both of these cities!! Two most important and influential cities in american history.
Definitely have been to both Boston and Philly and yes you’re exactly right Mr. Beat, Boston is a super hard city to navigate and drive in due to the layout of the roads and streets are there. That’s pretty much the case in all of MA, Another thing also is those streets change names every few blocks and addresses tend to have about one or two digits most of the time. I could never live or survive in Boston without a smart phone because of this.
Philly is less densely populated because of more vacant housing, hence the much lower prices
Its less density because philadelphia land area is three times bigger than Boston thats why
That "my CHiefs" comment is really showing its age, haha!
I once went on a road trip stopping at both cities. Definitely two of the greatest cities the US has to offer.
Born and raise in Philadelphia, I tell you, Philly is beautiful and has one of the best sport fans in the world. Never visit Boston, hopefully one day I will go.
