I've been on a fast food diet for 6 months. I've lost 75lbs. Each week I pick a restaurant and every day is 1500 calories from that restaurant for the week. I take a daily vitamin, and one day a week I will make some chicken and a salad. That is my "cheat meal". My favorite restaurants are taco bell, domino's, and chik-filet. Pizza weeks are my favorite, as one $8 pizza is enough for two days worth of calories just about. It's actually not that expensive because I haven't bought any groceries in half a year.
Great video. My masters thesis was on the effects of processed/fast food on learning in adolescents, so your experience reflects the evidence I found. Having a diet of processed/fast food affects your memory and cognitive function by a lot. I’ve always been health conscious and make sure to live a healthy lifestyle for my brain and body. With that said…… Taco Bell is also my favorite fast food and now I want it 🤤

I haven't watched this video yet but I'm an uber eats driver and this basically looks like my diet. I'm health conscious and I try to eat "the healtiest options" on the road like been burrito or veggie burrito from taco bell, or the breakfast wrap from sonic. So I'm super interested to see how this plays out.
Meat isnt unhealthy its just bad for the evironment, bean burritos and veggie burritos are not healthy compared to an actual burrito with beef and vegetables and non-fake cheese
If I must do fast food, I get Panda Express. I order a meal with brown rice, veggies and a low cal entree like mushroom chicken. Some even have tofu options.
A tip for night shift days: meal prep? Maybe the night before, morning of, weekend or start of the week. Even a simple salad that you can refrigerate. It might be nice to know that you don't have to stress about what to eat/what's for dinner. If you're a sandwich guy there you have it, a sandwich/wrap is pretty good. I'm no expert I just spend too much time on the internet
Your biggest problem was quantity of food, though. For me, a 1/8 slice of a large pizza with veggie toppings works fine as a small meal. So I just wrap up the rest of the slices individually for the freezer. They warm up great on a little baking stone in the convection oven and last for ages in their frozen cocoon. First I had to convince myself that my brother, who once traumatized me by taking a rare piece of pizzeria pizza from my plate, was hundreds of miles away and not able to come in and steal my pizza. But slow eating helps also, which had been impossible in childhood either for time constraints or greedy brother who ate three times faster than everybody else and inhaled any potential seconds. My bet is that you ate your home cooked meals more slowly and in lesser quantities. The volume differences can be deceptive since fast food tends to be very dense regarding various macros and calories so the meals might look of similar volume when they aren’t really comparable. So you really need to use a food tracker to check differences in macros and calories for the different types of home cooked and fast food meals.
I also don't feel really good after eating fast food. I was fat before like really really fat. My weight was 90 last year and i am on 65 today. Switched my diet and i lost 5 kgs in one month. I remember that when i weighed myself. From that very day i decided to not even touch fast food and i always take fruits with me during college when everyone is eating some fast food and i eat fruits, oats, rice. And i love it ❤️
I wonder how your skin felt during/after this experiment? I was on the road for couple days and we only had fast food. My skin's oil production went thru the roof (I'm female), the texture, the blemishes all were out of control. I cared for my skin the same way as i did before the trip, so I solely blamed the food.
Same! For some reason big fast food restaurants like mcDonalds or KFC make my skin so oily, even tho I have dry to normal skin. I really wonder how that works
@@lulu486 well, there is no nutrients in the fast food meals and the oil it's been fried in has been used soooo many times that there is overall nothing good in it. Except taste (thanks to added chemicals) and crisp.
Something I want to point out is that fats on their own don't tend to affect blood sugar very much, however pairing fats with decent amounts of sugar will take the spike caused by the sugar and prolong it. This is why the pizza was your worst meal. The glucose from the dough and sauce spiked your blood sugar while the grease made it last much longer. This is why many insulin pumps for Diabetics have settings where insulin can be given at a much slower rate over a longer period of time. The functions were specifically made for foods like pizza.
you cant just look at the glucose, you also have to take in consideration the additional ion concentration created after a breakdown which have to do with how everything communicates
Well done👏. You'll make an exceptional doctor due to your awareness of good food choices, health & education. Also glad you picked up on the amount of cars in the line up at a unhealthy take away shop. When I eat too much junk food I feel like this and also feel the inflammation throughout my body.
It would be interesting to compare a home cooked meal like microwave/frozen food to fast food. Who cooks/prepares vegetables and a "balanced" meal at home daily? Expecially when they don't have a dietician guiding them or any background knowledge of balanced healthy meals
Idk, even people in the medical field are consistently misinformed when it comes to nutrition. As a bodybuilder, I eat very large quantities of carbs (3 cups of cooked rice in one sitting is not uncommon). These fast food meals you've been eating have one thing in common... they're high in calories. Many of those coming from carbohydrates. I have a very similar insulin response after eating such quantities of rice when compared to eating high carb fast food. Also, the chart at 13:18 is simply outdated. For most people, protein should be a larger quantity, and that many vegetables are really not needed.
could have compared the fast food and healthy meal by making the macros and calorie count nearly identical because that has so much more of an effect on glucose than whether or not the food was made in a restaurant or your house
This was fun to watch, but it's hard to make conclusions from if you're not tracking macros and calories for each to keep that relatively stable across the two condition
Remembering the good (?) old days with Jollibee and Mcdonalds literally on the same street as my med school. I gained almost 10kg from all the fast food and stress eating. 😟 I liked watching you cook though (even though I never cook hehe), any recipe/meal plan videos in the future?
For the 9:50 about eating slower, I agree pretty much. However, I believe for my experience (not science) that eating slower helps you to digest food and actually feel full faster, therefore eating less. Like throwing everything in super fast and it has not digest and absorb so it is still not getting the "full" message but slowly will at the right time
I read The Diabetes Code and it says the exact same thing you’re saying. Thank you for this video. I’ll keep this in mind when I crave for fast food and will go read a book or study a topic.
Kind of off topic, but not really, especially for broke college students, food banks and pantries are always available. It might not be the most delicious, but it can help with that empty feeling in your stomach. For example, one time they gave me a small watermelon, peaches, cabbage, cauliflower, and peach cans. If you don't have anywhere to cook, you can at least eat the peaches, and the peach in the peach cans, you can probably and hopefully afford to buy cottage cheese and combine. We all seem to be broke the last 2 weeks of the semester.
I like cooking, seeing how much effort you are putting into your food is really satisfying. Also imagine cooking for my future partner makes me want to practice more cooking. But I also live in dorm which is little bit dirty and have several spiders so I decided to buy bento- japanese supermarket food with salad
I found 12 spiders in my apartment in the 10 minutes after I got home from work, so you have no excuse for not cooking at home. Just meal prep and use air tight containers and you'll have no issue
I will watch this tomorrow but i want to say something because many people always seem to claim they eat “healthy” but the food they mention is obviously not.. Cereal (any type, even Special K or chocolate-free granola), cereal/fibre bars, fruit yoghurts, cheese, store-bought fruit juice and ice tea, and protein bars are not healthy at all. I get a bit fed up seeing people complain that they eat healthy and and aren’t losing weight/clearing acne, and when asked they proudly say they had pasta salad with tomato sauce for lunch, cereal for breakfast, and a mcdonalds salad for dinner.
It is cheaper to buy groceries in the USA too! It's fucking $7 for a cheeseburger. You can buy 1LB of raw meat for less than that. Don't let all our fat, lazy people fool you. Home cooking is MUCH cheaper than fast food.
When you do the keto diet you stick to the keto diet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Likewise, Whole 30 diet - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unfortunately this is a bit click-baity. It is not an ultra processed food diet for 30 days, it’s one ultra-processed meal plus healthy meals. I wanted to watch all of it but the results would not be the same as a true ultra-processed foods diet.
I lost nearly 30 pounds and am still losing more but in these last three days we've been holding cookouts and making a lot of food, naturally I ate some food which completely destroyed my body I currently feel like i'm dying, the items I consumed consisted of 4 cookies 6 mini cupcakes 2 cups of an alcoholic drink 2 burgers 4 small steaks 4 servings of chips 3 cups of soda 1 brownie and a small portion of spaghetti. All I have to say is I never liked chips, cookies, soda and sweets or alcohol but I still consumed them, which led to weight gain, and regret, plus i'm already a depressed person which can result in a bad mixture.
I eat really healthy all the time and each time I “treat” myself regardless if it’s an organic , vegan , or GF food I’ll feel like shit 2 days after that. Start detoxing and immediately feel better cause obviously it’s all coming out.
I feel like this experiment should have included a third meal, the average american homecooked meal. I think cooking healthy meals is the optimum cooked meal, but lets be real, some homecooked meals aren't healthy, probably most arent. I feel like there should be an experiment of average homecooked meal versus take out. At least that gives people who eat takeout all the time the stepping stone towards better homecooked meals.
I'm going to have to watch this often. We don't eat take out more than once per month but I make food with the wrong carbs at least three times a week.
Really like your approach. You didn’t demonize fast food or shake ppl who eat it, you didn’t glorify homemade food, you just looked at the cause and effect with some nice metrics and science to elaborate on what’s happening on the inside
i’m interested in this experiment, but with similar macros in both meals (home-cooked and fast-food). Or at least similar amounts of proteins and calories (carbs and fats are pretty interchangeable).
The “inexpensive” part put me in stitches; especially what’s coming in April for Californians. $20 for a burger combo will be the norm, as minimum wage for fast food workers will be raised to $20. Many other fast food franchises like Chipotle, has already admitted higher prices are coming and paying over $11.99 for their traditional burritos, will be the new norm. In fact, many analysts predict a 25% increase across all fast food menus, coming April, once the new law comes into effect. Expect skimflation and shrinkflation come into full effect, to offset the wages of employees; in addition to major price hikes. Fast food will still be “fast,” but the expectations of it being cheap will only be a memory, shared on old movies or television shows.
From my experiences i tell people stay away from fast foods will end up getting you very ill if not maybe even death.its not a game processed foods brings stress and anxiety iam gladd i left that lifestyle.
If I were doing This experiment I’d just be going back and forth from chipotle (vegetarian burrito bowl or burrito)Taco Bell (black bean crunch wrap, bean burritos, any of the veggie options) subway (veggie sandwich or wrap) and maybe Carl’s Jr. every once in a awhile for their impossible burger. I think there is a way to eat fast food and be healthier than the choices that were shown in this video. Always go for the vegetarian option in my opinion 🖤 But I did enjoy this video! Great work!
I usually eat home cooked meals and I’ll get fast food 3/4 times in a month. Fast food gets sickening after the 3rd day in a row. but when it comes to homecooked food, I won’t get sick of it even if I make l the same thing every day for a week. I noticed after changing my diet my palate completely changed as well especially with sugar.
Before starting the video, i just wanna say I’m on the 6th day of my liquid fast (water, coke zero, and coffee) hopefully trying to hit 1-2 weeks, and this video will be my therapy for not being allowed to stuff my face at the moment.

I have fast food pretty frequently (once or twice every few weeks because I love it) and I don’t really get food comas. Sometimes I do if I eat a lot, but that’s only because my stomach is so god damn full.
If you have the mouth for it or are uber hungry, grab 2 slices of pizza, add your own topping and sandwich it and you now have your own personal Calzone.
I wish you h ad gotten chipotle. It would be nice to see the results of a seemingly healthy bowl. I made myself a homemade bowl tonight at work with a spinach base, grilled chicken, onion and pepper fajita mix, black beans, light sour cream, and 30g queso blanco salsa. I made guac but forgot it at home >.
I'll preface this by saying I have a few genetic health conditions, that tend to make me an anomaly, but my body reacts the opposite. My labs always show better overall health (lower cholesterol, lower Na, lower glucose, lower A1C, etc) when I've eaten a lot of fast food (and I feel healthier). I also tend to lose weight, whenever I go a period of time eating a diet heavily influenced by fast foods. It's really bizarre. But that's not necessarily a good thing, as I'm about 145 lbs at 5'9" and have a relatively low body fat %.
You might suffer from some conditions like low cholesterol or certain hormone production that fast food supplements like estrogen. I recommend using cronometer and actually tracking your nutrient intake for a good overview of your nutrients cuz you might be lacking. All fast food is not the same either, some are heavy in carbs, others are high in fat and protein while some have more veggies than others. That is something you need to look at as well when trying to figure out.
Sorry I don’t get the study design… no before/after, nothing to compare. I would have tested the actual diet or do it two monthly, healthy home cooked then next month only ultra. Check BMI, BP, weight of course. Body fat mass if possible. Then the experiment makes sense, doc.
Funny how you say most of your meal is carbs while neglecting that fat is infused into the carbs hence why it tastes so good and you dont need a lot of it since fat is over 2x as calorie dence as carbs and usually the carbs seem bigger cuz they have air gaps in the bread, the fact that its not a piece of hardtack should prove that point. A good way to see it is also in the macros, especially if you replace the pop with diet pop.
Cut the fries (so many useless calories). Lettuce wrap burgers, no mayo no bun. Diet soda over regular (taste buds will adjust). Limit sauces. Count your calories.

I thought veggies filled youu up the most ?
Why did you never go back?
@@ルナチャイルド-q1m Oh sorry I phrased that kind of weird. I love hot pot lol I get it when I can. But I meant that I never went back to my original way of eating, I always do veggie > meat > carb now instead of carb > meat > veggie
@@Dee_Dee794 Maybe some people are different but I find that carbs fill me up faster! Because it expands in your stomach (I think)
Check the Glucose Goddess to learn more why exactly that food order is much healthier
And yet, I have always been criticized for being such a slow eater! Thank you, I’m gonna continue eating slow; it definitely helps to enjoy the food instead of downing it.
I always never finish my meals.
The second I feel full, food stops feeling good. Even if I'm eating someone's meal, or in a restaurant. I can't force feed myself. And people absolutely hate it.
I wish I could do that. I used to feel so guilty if I didn't finish my food; like I keep eating. Now I'm improving , now I try to eat only what I need and I found out different ways to make use of that unfinished food
This is my problem too, and now in every meal I just cannot finish last too bite no matter what. If I force myself either my stomach hurts or I feel nausea and sometimes I puke. I want to finish my meals but it seems to be difficult.
@@krystal9282 just put less food on your plate alot of people eat with their eyes and bite of more than they can chew, if you're eating out just take the leftovers home and eat it later.

This is kinda like a click bait. When he said fast food diet, I thought he meant that he would eat nothing but fast foods for 30 days.
Type 1 diabetic here. You probably feel tired not only from reactive Hypoglacymia but also from a big jump up of glucose itself. High blood sugar can have really big effect on your concentration too especially if your body is not used to these levels and big change

Agree!
Why?
Great video. My masters thesis was on the effects of processed/fast food on learning in adolescents, so your experience reflects the evidence I found. Having a diet of processed/fast food affects your memory and cognitive function by a lot. I’ve always been health conscious and make sure to live a healthy lifestyle for my brain and body. With that said…… Taco Bell is also my favorite fast food and now I want it 🤤
What type of data did you find on how it impacts kids? Pretty dramatic, I assume?
@@bradleyboyer9979 yes, there was an overwhelming amount. Things like the more fast food restaurants there were within a certain radius of a school the lower the average gpas. There were a lot of links between increased weight and asthma. And theres the obvious self esteem issues that affect their success. A huge issue is the food provided to schools being pretty much prison food. The government has been able to claim French fries and pizza as enough vegetable servings because of the tomato sauce in pizza. Come on. It’s been almost ten years since I did my thesis and I’m sure there is even more evidence at this point
@@MiciousDawn It's insane. If my daughter ate the stuff they served at school, she would be sick and morbidly obese. Their breakfasts are typically pancakes with whipped cream and sprinkles. It's absolutely insane.
@@bradleyboyer9979 absolutely. It’s shameful that the wealthiest country in the world is feeding our children so poorly they are malnourished. A lot of the time obese kids are lacking many vital nutrients. It’s also setting up kids’ to have terrible eating habits that will become profoundly difficult for them to undo as adults. Your daughter is lucky she has you to make sure she eats well!

I've watched plenty of these documentaries and this one is by far the best. Detailed, honest, genuine, funny & informative!
Have you watch "Fat Head"?
Very much appreciate the HxH reference. I'm curious as to how beneficial a blood sugar monitor would be while dropping weight.
Good message in the end. hope you’re doing well after all those fast foods lol
Making slow recovery lol

Just started watching your vids yesterday, love the vibe, education, and music choice!
As a student, I can say that this made my "Animal nutrition" chapter 10x more interesting
Lollll
This! It was not terribly scientific was it?
But I think that's the point. When you eat fast food you actually eat MORE of It because it's less filling compared to a healthy meal
And i love it ❤️
Me watching a pizza: Oh it's my lucky day!
Matty: uhhh that's a lot of damage here, that's a lot of damage.....

8:42 the stock parts of the video really helped bring the video to life knowing that koi did it!
The Attack on Titan running in the background 😂👍
would be interesting to see how a fast would affect your insulin levels as well
Well done👏. You'll make an exceptional doctor due to your awareness of good food choices, health & education. Also glad you picked up on the amount of cars in the line up at a unhealthy take away shop. When I eat too much junk food I feel like this and also feel the inflammation throughout my body.
This is the kind of experiments we want to see.
Not just tips and tricks. Actually testing that.
Cheers you Guy!
Agreed, this was not meant to be medical advice, just fun experiment with some nutritional education
@@KoiAcademy I know, I was just saying that for an experiment, it's not very scientific haha
Remembering the good (?) old days with Jollibee and Mcdonalds literally on the same street as my med school. I gained almost 10kg from all the fast food and stress eating. 😟
I liked watching you cook though (even though I never cook hehe), any recipe/meal plan videos in the future?
For the 9:50 about eating slower, I agree pretty much. However, I believe for my experience (not science) that eating slower helps you to digest food and actually feel full faster, therefore eating less. Like throwing everything in super fast and it has not digest and absorb so it is still not getting the "full" message but slowly will at the right time
Gotta be honest, now I am interested in how to optimise my meals.
I read The Diabetes Code and it says the exact same thing you’re saying. Thank you for this video. I’ll keep this in mind when I crave for fast food and will go read a book or study a topic.
What's the control? What was his diet like before this experiment?
My exams are over yay now time to watch new vid from Mike and Matty :)
Watching this is very insightful. While I'm eating McDonalds as I watch.
And by "we" I meant my friends and I, back in the days...
I like cooking, seeing how much effort you are putting into your food is really satisfying. Also imagine cooking for my future partner makes me want to practice more cooking. But I also live in dorm which is little bit dirty and have several spiders so I decided to buy bento- japanese supermarket food with salad
You can make salad on your own
I found 12 spiders in my apartment in the 10 minutes after I got home from work, so you have no excuse for not cooking at home.
Fast food in Europe (specifically UK) is not cost effective at all, it’s way cheaper to buy your own groceries and cook up a meal.
It is cheaper to buy groceries in the USA too! It's fucking $7 for a cheeseburger. You can buy 1LB of raw meat for less than that. Don't let all our fat, lazy people fool you. Home cooking is MUCH cheaper than fast food.
This was a great experiment.
Thanks for sharing it, I'll show it to my friends.

We wouldn’t want to be responsible for the poor lad’s demise.... or flunking out of school!
I lost nearly 30 pounds and am still losing more but in these last three days we've been holding cookouts and making a lot of food, naturally I ate some food which completely destroyed my body I currently feel like i'm dying, the items I consumed consisted of
4 cookies
6 mini cupcakes
2 cups of an alcoholic drink
2 burgers
4 small steaks
4 servings of chips
3 cups of soda
1 brownie
and a small portion of spaghetti.
Facts, happens to me too
This can show why some people can’t study very well after the slump of fast food.
*"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." - James Clear*
Obnoxiously satisfying to watch
Really like your approach. You didn’t demonize fast food or shake ppl who eat it, you didn’t glorify homemade food, you just looked at the cause and effect with some nice metrics and science to elaborate on what’s happening on the inside
i’m interested in this experiment, but with similar macros in both meals (home-cooked and fast-food). Or at least similar amounts of proteins and calories (carbs and fats are pretty interchangeable).
I basically did this same experiment for two weeks and gained 5 lbs.
Fast food will still be “fast,” but the expectations of it being cheap will only be a memory, shared on old movies or television shows.
i like that this video is not 1 hour long ! ;p great work very interesting
Always go for the vegetarian option in my opinion 🖤
But I did enjoy this video! Great work!
Love how you call eating bread leaves and beans healthy lol you are getting zero nutrition. Better off eating the meat
Before starting the video, i just wanna say I’m on the 6th day of my liquid fast (water, coke zero, and coffee) hopefully trying to hit 1-2 weeks, and this video will be my therapy for not being allowed to stuff my face at the moment.
here's an idea - try incorporating liquids with nutrients like coconut water or real fruit juices :))
So you're starving yourself?
@@bigmansteve1828 i mean, i guess? It’s a combination of a religious/health fast. The longest fast of all time was done in the same way I’m doing my fast, with zero calorie beverages, water, and lots of caffeine lol. Sorry that my post rubbed you the wrong way, my friend. May the Guanyin bless you with the peace you ever-long for.
@@nickole6601 because real fruit juices have sugar and it would literally defeat the entire purpose of a fast lol. Coconut water, although having little calories, still has calories. My goal is to consume 0 calories over the course of 1-2 weeks. It is easy, many have done it. The buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, fasted for 49 days with nothing to drink or eat. If he can do that, then 1-2, maybe even 3 weeks, is nothing.
@@Kuefo I respect your fast and your religious preferences however I would be careful with trying to follow what religious figures have done. Since many religions are passed on by oral or written means it is difficult to separate fact from tall tale. As long as you feel okay I would continue but if you feel ill or weak I would advise to stop and seek a medical professional. Also good luck on the fast, be safe and I hope it brings you happiness! ☮
I really really enjoyed this video! Thank you for doing this and explaining things medically and also ‘layman’s terms’ 🙌🏾 I learned a ton 📚
I made guac but forgot it at home >.
any carbs will spike glucose, if he got rice, fajita veggies, etc. in it im sure you’d see a similar spike.
Both my tall thin exes would have the same problem and my daughter.

Then the experiment makes sense, doc.

hats off to you for making that sacrifice! I couldn't eat fast food even once a day, ugh. i'd just be so sick
