Ive really grown to appreciate brotato. What seems at first like upgrades that are just flat bonuses and nothing too crazy (usually) is actually a great game of figuring out how to scale and balance your stats. Every match becomes a puzzle of sorts of which item to choose.

The problem with player-facing rarities is that it takes away A LOT out of choices. The average player will instinctively go to the highest color and do not make actual interesting decisions in regards to their current builds, I'm definitely against it :P

It may be so on some games. But on Rogue Genesia even lower rarity cards work like a charm. Even Tainted cards, which were useless, got a lot more useful after some buffs.

@@gabrieldias3479 Agreed. There are many games that have OP common items/cards. Especially when you stack combos in the right way.

@@ConnorHammond I think that's ADGD's point. Players being shown a card of higher rarity may instinctively grab that card and instead of checking to see if a lower rarity card fits their build better.
I still think I'd rather see the rarity though. It helps new players with making choices and seasoned players will know to look beyond the rarity.

I have Vampire Survivors ranked #3 on my personal tier list for the genre. And it only holds that spot for setting such an initial high bar. It will probably get lower as time goes on as I can't seem to stand playing it as is.
I would counter that the rarity of items being on the face of the item is not really an evolution but just Rogue Genesia's take on the concept. Because their are trade off's in most cases. It's just how their item system works. Like, I don't think it dates VS or other games in the genre that don't show rarity when there are not weaker versions of a rare item. RG is ranked #4 on my tier list.
Brotato def has raised the bar when it comes to having unique characters. Boneraiser Minions also does this pretty well but not nearly as good as Brotato. Brotato is my #1 ranked and BRM is my #2.
I finally managed to play a little Holocure. I hate meta progression. And it seemed like meta progression hell with it's gacha system on top of having standard meta progression. I did like how each character had it's own weapon with unique passives they could learn for the weapon. To me, it's more of an evolution from Nomad Survival who had the idea but failed to do much interesting with it. I have Holocure ranked #9 in my list and Nomad Survival is #7.
Soulstone Survivors is what I would call the first disappointing game for the genre. And for a lot of various reasons. Won't get into all that here. But it does not even come close to touching how well, imo, Boneraiser Minions does endless modes. You can NGF (new game forever) the main mode - raising more minions, earning more relics and spells ect. There is also Skirmish mode (endless for each map) and the difficulty ramps up at a nice pace. Most runs are 15-20 minutes and not hours. The daily and weekly challenge are endless mode with rulesets similar to skirmish. Not to mention ALL of this has in game leader boards for each class, who as mentioned before, has fairly unique identities for how they play. SSS wishes it could come close to BRM in this regard.
Once again, Brotato wins for how well meta progression is done overall. As it's nearly non existent. But BRM has the second place for how well it's done. Partially because of what Nate is talking about. The individual class progression can take a few runs. But the main meta takes next to no time in comparison even to other games of the genre. Not sure how it is now as they have added a bit. But when I got this day one of release I had everything done in 3 hours. But yes. Each class having it's own meta progression is neato and I have not seen another do it as good.
VS is also what I recommend to beginners. And if they claim they want more of a challenge, less meta progression and leader boards I send to to Brotato or BRM. And if it seems they like the power fantasy and grinding more power fantasy I send them to Rogue Genesia or Spellbook Demonslayers.

You're missing out on what Holocure can offer tbh. Meta progression is good if the stages increasingly get difficult; you couldn't play Stage 1 Hard with a base character with no G-Rank or bonuses for example. For me, it's more boring if a game has 0 meta progression because that means if you find a strategy that works for you, no matter how unique your characters are, you will almost always fall back on the same old strat that works. Not very fun and engaging at all.

My introduction to the genre was 10 minutes 'till dawn, and I'd say it checks a lot of the boxes here. It's also probably the most atmospheric of the swarm survival games I've played to this day.
