My brother won a lvl 5 Mew in a pokemon tournament when i was 10 =D got it transferred onto a new pokemon yellow he bought (and got it upto the pokemon center) he gave it to me for christmas! i was the biggest boss in school after that.
He's a champ! 11 years older than me and it was the only reason he even entered the tournament (he's a freaking natural at games.) he even borrowed someone else's cartridge at the tourny, and then ran out to buy the Yellow cartridge after he won >.
@MessyPaint You can get mew by fighting another trainer with slowpoke I believe. The game uses the pokemon's name/number in a hex code, which is what makes the mew appear. There is an article online about it.

The real glitch in all of this, is that you are able to fly (or teleport) away if you press the start button before a scroll-in battle. Even though you escaped, the game will think you are in battle. Because the gameboy did not have a lot of internal memory, different info is saved on the same location based on if you are in a fight or just walking. The slowpoke Spe stat trigger an encounter with Mew.
I swear to god i just tried this during the weekend while playing and it actually worked! If i only knew this during when i was younger i would have been the shit. Thanks for the demo and hopefully everybody try this cause it work. Oh and my Mew was a lvl.7

Just do the Mew glitch (Any form. as long as you get a mew.) But instead of fighting to defeat your opponent, use Growl until it has no effect any more then defeat your opponent. Now, go fight Mew (who should be at lvl1) and catch him/her/it. Check Mews stats, put it first in your party then go into a battle, swap Mew for another Pokemon then defeat the other Pokemon. The exp will be shared and Mew will just become lvl100. I just saved you 10 mins of boredom.
You're wrong. There is a glitch to catch Mew, I did it on my Gameboy Color with the Blue game, and it worked perfectly. Of course it is a glitch, but it still is the best way to catch it in my opinion, considering the fact that tournaments on gamerboy color don't happen nowadays

It's because the Ekans in the grass didn't give it enough exp (55 exp) so it ended up being a negative value. Eitherway, it is a glitch and it does work. I do not have a gameshark, and I live in Denmark so no tournament for me.
If you use growl 6 times on the slowpoke you fight just before, The mew you will meet will be lvl 1. Use it 5 times, it will be lvl 2, 4 times, lvl 3 aso. - be careful about the 0 and negative values, I heard it will f* up the game :P

No, but most of it's naturally learned skills kind of suck. You can, however, teach it any TM or HM move. My Mew had Thunderbolt, Surf, Psychic, and Softboiled.
I am just now trying this but when I practice pressing START before a trainer sees me, I can never do it. The button doesn't respond quickly enough for me to pull up the START menu before they see me.

When mew is in the bank, attempting to withdraw him freezes the game. Is there a way around this, aside from keeping him in your party 24/7? ::Edit:: Disregard, leveling him up from level 1 before putting in the bank fixes the withdraw freeze.
That's odd. I've done this trick countless times and the Mew (or other Pokemon) depending on the trainer you battle is always level 7. Either way, I've got all 151, so it doesn't matter. Just an observation.

Warning to everybody...PRESS THE 'START' BUTTON; NOT THE 'A' BUTTON. It took me at least four tries to figure that out, and it was PISSING ME OFF.
I did it differently. After you beat gut with slowpoke I teleport to cerulean then went to route 24-25 then menu popped up then I caught mew Lv.7.
