    Excellent review. I recently purchased the Sportsman 106 Paddle version in the EMBER color. Love it. The 106 is a great fit for Lady Anglers who are under 5'5" heights, it's a nice "petite " size for foot braces, etc. That IS NOT to say that my 6"2" husband can't comfortably use it because it fits him nicely too! It's a truly amazing boat for yayak overnight camping! Holds a ton of fishing and camping gear. I'm very pleased with the 106 so that might help someone who's trying to decide between the 120 and 106 models. We are loving it as we are Bass fishing our way across Florida. Car topping the 106 is a DREAM COME TRUE for our Toad to our Motorcoach lifestyle.

      Sorry to bother you but I've been debating this for some time. I liked the 106 for its size, seems a lot easier to transport and the perfect amount of space for storage. Im about 6'1 300. Do you think it could fit me comfortably or should I just go with the 120?

    • @pamelaklemp5615

      @@coldcrush5921 Some of your answers will be dictated by the waterways you want to fish in and going out on more calm VS chops/winds. Shallow waters will play a part in that too. Clearly the 120 is more versatile for all those conditions but the 106 might be limiting in some areas for you as well as the amount of on-board items you could carry as extras with you. For your weight I personally tend to think the 120 would be a better all around fit for you. I believe that you would be happier long-term and get your max usage from it. The 120 has an excellent resale value, you can always look to downsize your kayak later should you choose to do it. I looked hard at the 120 myself, but we Motorcoach and need to car top over distance when we travel. For me that was a huge factor in kayak size. My husband drives the car or our Van with the kayak car topped on it. I drive the Motorcoach so he can get to areas with ease that I cannot with the Coach, drive-thru restaurants, etc.

    I know this video is 4yrs old, but I'm currently shopping around for a 12ft kayak to upgrade my current one..Itll be for 4+ day fishing/camping trips..I'm looking for a raised seat and storage for my camping gear so i can go in colder weather as well and not be sitting in the water like my current one..Speed isnt a big factor I'll be primarily on rivers flowing down the mountains, so there is some rapids,rocks etc... Do you think this will handle ok?

    • @flbasspaddler
      @flbasspaddler  3 місяці тому

      I can tell you that this is a very stable kayak and has ample room in its tankwell for gear. As far as the rivers are concerned, how fast is the current? If you’re just drifting, it should be fine.

    Thanks so much for your review of Topwater 120. I purchased this kayak earlier this year and been fishing with it since April. I agree with your assessment. However, I am a little disappointed with a couple things. First, after only about 8 times out using the boat the seat began to tear at the seams. I'm working through my dealer to resolve. The kayak does track well when paddling but when arriving at a fishing spot it wants to spin constantly even when there is little or almost zero wind. Rudder kits are overpriced and almost always out of stock. Have you had any similar issues? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks much!!

    • @flbasspaddler
      @flbasspaddler  5 років тому

      Thank you for your feedback and questions. First, I did experience some of the "spinning" you are referring to. To be honest, I also experienced that with other smaller kayaks (My previous Kaku Wahoo did the same as well as the Bonafide RS117 which I had also done a review on) and that is why I decided to add the rudder. I don't normally reference the spinning in my video reviews as that is something that I have experienced on multiple occasions with shorter kayaks. As far as the rudder, yes, it is expensive and I can't answer to the overall price...perhaps it is the composite material used or some of the additional parts needed such as the hatch that is included which is not common in other rudder kits. It has been out of stock and I am sure your local dealer has a point of contact to provide an ETA. In reference to the seat, I have seen social media posts referencing the seat seams splitting and perhaps that something that needs to be brought to the attention of Johnson Outdoors (I have already sent them an email). My seat had some separation of one of the seams on one side but it has not gotten any worse, but I am watching it carefully. Seats in kayaks under $1000 do tend to be made of "lesser" materials...the seat in my Kaku Wahoo completely failed (collapsed while on a fishing excursion) and I had to replace the entire webbed section, which rendered the boat useless until I received the replacement. I appreciate your concerns and feedback and I wish I could be of more assistance, but I am just a consumer and am not part of the Johnson Outdoors Pro Staff.

    • @jscott4431
      @jscott4431 5 років тому +1

      @@flbasspaddler Thanks very much for the info. I do have a replacement seat on the way from my dealer. As for the rudder...I'm willing to spend the money for the rudder kit when it becomes available, if necessary. In your opinion, does the rudder kit really help with boat position? I'd like to get your thoughts before spending $300. Really appreciate your response and informative videos.

    • @flbasspaddler
      @flbasspaddler  5 років тому

      @@jscott4431 It really does help. For example, I fish the rim canal of Lake Okeechobee...the slightest winds will cause a boat to spin. With the rudder, I can maintain position which in turn allows me to fish while the kayak is in motion with the wind. I also helps out a great deal when I am inshore fishing and am working with the incoming / outgoing tidal flow. Just the the rim canal, the rudder keeps the kayaks position and I can keep hammering away at the mangrove banks looking for Snook.

I am looking to upgrade and have a deposit down for the sportsman 120, which is practically same i believe as topwater 120. While waiting for my sportsman i have been doing some research and have came across the Vibe sea ghost, have you had any experience with these? Great review and replies guys. I'm looking for my first kayak. I need something real stable and the Topwater 120 and the Predator MX have been suggested. I'm 325lbs. and live on a slow moving river. Which boat do you suggest for me?

    • @flbasspaddler
      @flbasspaddler  5 років тому +2

      David...Thank You for the kind words. I actually owned a MX at one point. Both the Topwater 120 and MX are fantastic kayaks, weigh almost the same, but the Topwater has a max capacity of 500 pounds, which is 100 pounds more than the MX. However, I feel that if you buy one of these without a rudder ( I do not believe the MX can accept a rudder) the MX may track better in a river, even if the water is slow moving. Also, the MX does have a more comfortable seat, but again, respectfully, with you weighing 325 pounds, you may be limited to how much gear you can carry with the MX having a 400 pound capacity. I say try both if you can via demo, and see which one you are more comfortable in. You can actually see my MX in action in my video "Chasing Smallies". I hope this helps...

      I too owned a Predator MX, and found it to be the most comfortable of any kayak I’ve had. I trailered it
      Because of the weight. I sold it this year along with the trailer, after buying a pickup, and purchased a flatter bottomed yak.
      Still miss my MX, was a battleship of a yak.

    • @flbasspaddler

      The stability on the Topwater is amazing but to be honest, I’ve never been on the Catch 120 so I could not accurately compare the two. I would suggest you perhaps ask that question on the Kayak Bass Fishing page on Facebook as I am sure there are anglers who could answer that question.

      Jim Hickey Hey Jim...Thank You for subscribing. Overall, both are great boats. The Topwater and Wahoo are unbelievably stable and have decent speed for smaller kayaks. The Wahoo does offer more space in the cockpit area and is molded in the front to cut through smaller chop and remain dry, while the Topwater will take chop over the bow.However, I feel the Topwater 120 is a much better value. The Topwater has 100 more pounds of capacity than the Wahoo, the seat is two position, as well as being more comfortable, plus it has nicer features such as a padded floor, dryer hatches, rigid carry handles, a flatter bow for installation of accessories, and a included stand up assist strap. Now I encourage you to demo both of you have the opportunity, but overall, I prefer the Topwater 120 over the Wahoo. I hope this helps...
