But I don’t think this our case here, I think that our mindset changes a lot every week.. we’re new people every year, what I’m saying is that our goals develop when we live. We’ll just keep editing our goals by just living! And if we’re driven by fear our goals would be a lot more meaningful because we fear what will happen to us if we just didn’t care and just stopped doing anything meaningful

Resentment and Arrogance.
I am not resentful towards people who have money, i am tired of people who are not gracious or thankful. I would never envy that life. I pity it. Money does not autimatically bring kindness or grace. I have met people who do not make you feel beneath them. They instruct and guide. That is priceless, but very difficult to find. Only true leaders can encourage and groom future leaders who have dignity and grace. When people become leaders they do not groom future l leaders, because they are too worried they are going to be better than them. It all stems from incompetency and not wanting to see others get ahead too. They do not want you to possibly do better than them. Spoiled children.

Maria Alano yup. On one hand you want to be graceful and empathetic, on the other hand you dont want to be taken advantage of.

@@mariaalano3077 it's like any other skill there is. It requires practice. Small steps at first.
Becoming more gracious has been a lifelong project.
I learned how to be graceful with disciplining my kids. I never left them resentful.
Nietzsche was against humility as it is a virtue of slave morality and celebrates mediocrity. Ego has a positive utility if you can master it (self-mastery) and harness it in a productive and creative manner. Conversely, if you are are slave to your ego (herd morality) then you will be resentful (ressentiment- what Jordan is talking about in this vid) and take revenge on others through destructive manifestations. People of the herd (mob) then hide this insidious intent behind their "humility".
Smoking has supported my poverty.. has disabled my ability to reason and act reasonably... has taken the most valuable things in my life and made them obedient to Tobacco. I started as a young person and the health , money and over all benefits to my life are suppressed and with any grace I ask to stop. This statement is part of my effort/healing ,,, hope it's also a warning to anyone looking at tobacco. People like Jordon have helped me
I hope you've made more steps in your healing journey, friend. It's not easy, but I hope you've found your peace.
I like your awareness. I have found that in order to succeed at something this hard is to get really excited about the new habits and get really turned off by the old habits. This is achieved by listening to people who have succeeded in the same area and are Enthusiastic about it. And by learning about the human body and how awesome it is to have it working well. I remember getting excited that I wasn't wasting time smoking anymore. I could use that time to learn something. I remember getting excited that my life was becoming more productive. I got excited when I began learning about the ketogenic diet (Atkins) and then excited that my physical energy increased to where I wanted to be physically active. Life became more enjoyable because my body was healthier and more energetic. My brain worked better because I no longer ate sugar or carbohydrates. I was no longer wasting time or money on cigarettes. I began to hate cigarettes and love health. I was very grateful to God for this change in perspective.
Jordan Peterson is a force of good.
Which is exactly why some politicians and such try and turn people against him. They want the world to be a certain way so they can keep people in check.
They don’t want people to start thinking for themselves.
Jordan doesn’t force his opinions on others, he helps them open up their eyes.
This is why I hold such respect for this heaven-sent man.
No matter the hate, he sees what needs to be done for the sake of the world and attempts what many would not have the strength to. And he does it with such grace.
Truly an inspiration which brings hope to and for mankind. A reminder of how important self progression is.
Completely agree with that. Jordan's trying to help as many individuals as he can, and politicans do the exact opposite. They focus on groups, and the interest of THOSE groups, not the expression of individuality.
Like most issues, take it or leave it.
JP is fairly concerned and knowledgeable of the workings of the world.
Could I find one politician that can or does present the same transparency and with effect.
Polititions have people power.
JP has has people and they develop freely from any guise. 🙏
I'd even go as far to celebrate his birthday 'Party' 🤭
That's what I think, too. Every time I come across an article or comment mocking him personally, or attempting to point out the 'flaws' in his arguments. These are the people he talks about and they are so deeply entrenched in their positions that they will attack anyone who threatens them. I hope he is well and will come back soon.
He's human, but an incredible inspiration for sure
@Psychonaut yes, they are mostly dull ineffective people waiting for command instructions and Netflix to function about.
This man will go down in history as a great. Get well soon Dr Peterson
@Psychonaut he's a human being. Not a robot. You need to be a bit more open minded .....
@Psychonaut we are all vulnerable. We are all susceptible to outside persuasions. Of course he knows the danger of benzos. He's not an idiot. However, at times, anyone that succumbes to a high degree of personal turmoil or pain will seek help. Are 6ou saying because he's a clinical psychologist that he should be immune or at least reject the idea of help through medicine?? He is a doctor too remember. How has he conducted himself, in a way that contradicts what he says? He has never claimed to be immune or perfect to life's challenges. His wife became very ill, his child has had multiple illnrsses. As you said he is a clinical psychologist, they too need debriefing and decompression as to deal with the weight of their work. I get out quite a lot, I am not just a thumbnail on a social media site. I have lived and died many times during my journey. I realise the fragility of humans, their defects as well as their attributes. And just because you're well educated, well financed, well supported does not mean you superhuman. If you put him on a pedestal and felt he is a fraud when showing human vulnerability , then that is your misinterpritation and not his downfall. Every man has a weakness or many weaknesses. That is an assumption though. You may very well be the perfect human being....
@Psychonaut subconsciously you have. He shouldn't do this, shouldn't do that. He's a clinical psychologist. No he's human first and foremost. Yes many people act one way, others act another. We are individual. That is his journey. Maybe after years of stress and pain he chose anti anxiety medication, as do many of us that suffer with anxiety. I wouldn't be so quick to defame someone that speaks so much sense and knowldge. Can you honestly say that any man that has walked the earth, has been without weakness, self doubt or persecution? Ghandi was racist, Mandela too. Hitler was a psychopath, Genghis khan wiped out 10% of the world's population. Churchill was racist, the list goes on and on. He often speaks of the shadow. This period is his shadow coming to the front. I dont worship the Man. I see his vulnerabilities the same as you do. The difference is o won't hang him out to dry because he came to a pinnacle in his life that didn't quite fit what people held him to.
@Psychonaut Getting out of addiction is a sign of strength. You sir, look on negative instead of both sides of the coin. Close minded?
@Psychonaut The issue with your assumption with me being uneducated and inexperienced is first of all a fallacy, second of all he did not prescribe himself medication he was on. He was given a prescription, multiple prescriptions actually.
On another note, what exactly was your contribution and demonstration on what resilience is for the world compared to Jordan? I sure can name a couple of things that he did, and he did them despite the circumstances he and his family was in. Your turn

@@Habasmall93 Yes, you can always turn it into something good/positive and better yourself and those around you. I've been very arrogant and resentful in large parts of my life as well. But that should not come off as a surprise when you've been bullied as a child wherever you moved, the friends you got along the way just held you down not up, and so many just want to ruin your success/achievements along the way. So yeah, pretty hard NOT to be resentful in this world but you have to deal with it and always seek out the best way and opportunities for yourself.

When i was 19 i was a passenger in a car and we hit a tree at 110 miles an a hour. Needless to say i've been a paraplegic ever since .. but having a very high IQ and a competitive spirit it in almost no way held me back .. I'm 45 years old now.. and let me tell you .. I still struggler with both of these attitudes .. if not publicly .. privately for sure .. .. The struggles i endured and mistakes i made along my life .. were propagable increased greatly because of these attitudes .. one reason why is .. if you suffer a life changing injury and become disabled .. people .. will let you live in your resentment more so then normal .. not good ! lol
Mmm. I think you're right there.

That's brutal. Props to you for enduring it. I probably wouldn't be as strong-willed. A car accident is too quick. It's terrifying how much of an effect it has for the rest of one's life. And you were a passenger too. I bet that made the injury even harder to swallow. Since there is literally someone else to blame other than yourself. That sucks... But it's also true that we only make it worse by being resentful.
Thank you for posting his lectures. We need professors who helps us think, helping us develop critical thinking skills..helping us see the lessons as relevant with current events.
He sounds like he is so desperate to save us from ourselves. I wish him inner peace and the knowledge that the life we have here now is not horrible. It just is, and we have lessons to learn to become "better" for our inner peace. Such a treasure of knowledge and passion.
It’s bigger than just personal experiences. He’s speaking on a macro level. If you haven’t already had experiences that lead you hanging on by a thread then it’ll be difficult to understand what he’s getting at. And if you haven’t experienced it yet, you will. Inner peace is different from not having a unimaginable horrid experience(s). We can’t have legitimate peace (which I’d argue only comes from God) without working inside difficulty. If not, it’s just naivety.
When you wish something for others, but don't do anything, yet make sure to exclaim it...it is done for you. Your inner peace is really a cowardly selfish blandness. I wish you great turmoil.
Why did no one tell me this before? Clears up so many false thinking. Love this Man!

Gratitude and humility 🙏🏼 and FAITH IN OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
Amen sister! All good things begin with, us turning to God and putting our trust in Jesus.
Then, gratitude and humility are beautiful gifts of God. 🙂
Good luck being humble in America. Everything moves fast and no one seems to care if your broke. You gotta work no matter what even if you don't have money you gotta work. I have relatives in mexico who don't understand that i have the good things and more income but i gotta work whether im sick or dying yet they just want the money because im rich in " America" if they only knew how difficult it is to save up and come out on top. They literally take one special moment and judge you by that specific moment but they never count on the back breaking work that was done for that specific moment.
People who don't put the work in don't know at all. They see the results and assume it's easy. Its not. I tell my daughters that all the time and effort you put in alone, late nights, early mornings...the sacrifices you bear to do better...THAT'S what matters. The jealous will never see that. And who cares about them. Ignore them.
It’s almost odd to me that this information is so simple and the only person I hear talking about it is Jordan Peterson. Thank you. May I add or reiterate knowing your emotional limits and not exposing yourself to toxic people that don’t care about you. Knowing situations that you can’t control and having friends that support you would have to go a long way in preventing resentment.
Relative poverty I get. But when I've worked the same job for 7 years and am full time and despite raises am still unable to afford basic housing, there is a fucking issue.
Obviously you have other issues at hand.
@@livinglife4835 I mean, there still is some issues in the USA.
Like, a single mom working 3 bad paid jobs and has to live with her brother because she can´t afford anything else isn´t exactly fair pay.
In Germany, there is a minimum amount calculated for each person to live correctly.
If you work , but it pays too less, they will give whatever is missing to achieve the minimum limit (someone working low paid job might just need 100-200€ a months but it can make a big difference).
Here, no one ends up on the streets because they lost their job or can´t afford a rent.
The only homeless you´ll see are either people who have such an addicition and weren´t willing or able to treat it, or have a very serious mental illness and so don´t take care of their paperwork or don´t go to their appointment with the job center.
I wouldn´t say countries like Germany, Sweden and such are not successful countries.
In the UK, social housing is available for rent. The housing is owned by the councils (government) and is very affordable. If you are on a low wage, you get a discount on your rent. There are also private landlords, but they are very expensive and are usually poor quality. We have a pretty good welfare system where the poorer, or poorly paid, are helped out and are able to get housing.
@@charlottemadadi The U.S. has a negative income tax, so anyone earning below the poverty rate (based on number of dependents) will receive a tax refund to bring them just above the poverty level. People make bad choices, and anyone with children who needs to work 3 jobs and is at or below the poverty level has made bad choices. Those are the situations for which welfare should exist. To help her learn a skill so she can get a better paying jobs
You need to find a different, better paying job, or move to a location with lower housing costs. This is a situation faced by many low and middle class workers at some point in their lives. The cause is inflation.
What a humble genius Dr Peterson is.
He’s rehashing age-old theories from past thinkers.
I second that it's not like he creates these notions and not all Left wing people are resentful Come on that's ridiculous
I am a former NDP insider (New Democrats of Canada - the left wing party today, Labour party once) and I am profoundly moved that he is so incredibly honest. It would have served his purposes much more were he the devil the dishonest media paints him had he painted us with the same brush. But he doesn't. He says he met Romanow, and Ed Broadbent and presumably he worked with Notley and that he met the leaders of the big unions in Canada and he says these people did care about the working folk and were driven by the right reasons but then he met the aparatchiks and found them driven by resentment.
This is 100% true and I also have seen this also and can tell you that some of the best, kindest, most generous and loving people who are just like nobody are involved in leftist parties but they are by and large the women and men who came out of the trade unions, who changed diapers of elderly patients or had their skins burned in the steel mills or cleaned our schools. The other group, however, is some of the nastiest, prettiest, most vicious demonic snakes in the body of a human being you will ever encounter. And currently, and sadly, they are winning.
As an employee in corporate US, a typical situation in to have 10 active and another 10 occasional middle managers pushing down requirements. Even if you succeed and get raises and bonuses, how do you not develop unhealthy resentment over time?
Well, first of all resentment won't help. You have some control over your emotions and which you enable and help to thrive.
But, if you're playing the corporate game, there are certain things that come with it. Like hierarchies and arsehole managers. Playing political games. Abuse of power. Waste and inefficiency. Nepotism. Bullying. But becoming resentful of these things is like playing chess and resenting the fact that pawns can't move sideways. That's how it is. If you can't stand it, do something else with your life instead. Spend your emotions on things that really matter, like your friends and family, or being the best person you can be. You aren't going to change corporate life.

Well I'm in a situation at work where people who have less experience and have spent less time in the business are being given beneficial work opportunities not privy to other workers, who have more experience and have been there longer. I admit I feel resentful that I was overlooked but also other people in my situation have been overlooked too. I would be happy for people who are in my situation be given the opportunities even if I missed out - but am resentful that someone inexperienced has been gifted the opportunity purely due to being chummy with certain people. Hello, my name is Matt and I'm addicted to Dr. Peterson's logic. I do not wish to abstain🤣
Resentment is a topic that relates to being manipulated. If you are subjected to the class system you resent your placement and part of it is because someone put you there other than your parents. Once you understand that resentment is founded on circumstances and not blame, you can cope better, but to add to it and piss you off further, you are in that circumstance by people who plan it that way. But if you want to win this mind game, deconstruct your resentment, win at this mind game at all costs, and find another door to walk through after you accomplish this. There are other planes of thought you can live your life under, but they want you resentful and will try to pull you back. Get it now? You will feel it if you try. As far as arrogance is concerned, its derived from shame which narcissism blossoms through this very metamorphosis. Believing you are better is an arrogance of immature beliefs that you are the center of the universe, like fighting gravity. Good luck with that. Everyone I know who is a narcissist is not successful.
Yup resentment is often based on the idea we are *especially* targeted by unfairness. When it's really our own incompetence that makes it that way. And then of course arrogance . . . also known as excessive pride or hubris.
Upvoted but it isn't always d person's fault. Example: u are an Afghan woman , u are competent at your job & life but no one takes u seriously.

Arrogance arises from feeling of superiority or privilege with abusing the advantages from this.
Both of them are resultant from Denial or ignorance of these
I resent myself for being so arrogant. I would be screwed, but I'm smart enough to overcome anything. See there I go again, hate when I do that.
Pride is the most destructive attitude...it’s what most ppl have, what most ppl struggle with, and makes a lot of ppl suffer...it is also described as the biggest sin in the Bible, it’s what created the fall of Lucifer, and it’s what God hates the most...Arrogance and resentment can be the root of pride though...
Your god is a hater?
Yes he hates the proud...
Tyler Durden I try to follow God as best as I can, and try to do what’s right.
TheNewGuy Fray You just gave me a massive headache, but thanks for the effort of replying.
I don't know How did I give u a massive headache lol...You need to Love God but Fear him also my friend...it’s called Humility...
I have found when I see that resentment has set in, it never ends well...
To quote him, “WHERE’S THE OTHER HALF [of this video]?!”
Poverty is a complex problem. It is the general lack of ressources: mental, monetary, emotional, moral, and so on. A smart government prevents people from falling into it, because it is hard to get out.
No government can make miracles.
That’s a silly thought; Government is not responsible for producing resources at all. The parents are responsible for all those “resources”. Lemme ask you, where do people come from? Who are responsible for those people?
Through social safety nets governments can reduce the likelihood of people becoming poor due to life events such as illness, incapacity to work, death of breadwinner, divorce, etc. A lot of countries in Europe have this systems in place and they work. The premise of a series like breaking bad, for instance, wouldn't make sense for them, because being a teacher with a disabled child and another in the way wouldn't mean a financial disaster in their country.
@@sailemartini5902 the government is responsible for collecting taxes and for assigning those resources. From a social and political science perspective, I don't get your point
You are one of the most effective mentor in my life!
I love how Jordan ask since sell open ended questions by using how why and answers his own questions nothing better than open-ended questions to solutions or negotiations
Lovely collection of words, you should put them into alphabetical order for easy referencing.
So succinctly stated. We have the power to use our intelligence and benefit therefrom or allow our feelings of resentment to cloud our judgement.
Money is useless unless you know what to do with it. Just one of his many nuggets in his talk.
He isn’t the originator of that thought however.
Dr Peterson speaks on a level where I really battle to understand half of it, but I still keep listening.
Everybody is a teacher. Accept the responsibility.
Such a Karen statement
Yeah, I remember when I didn't have food for a week.
Money wouldn't have helped me though. It was just relative poverty, because I was in North America. Also, if someone had given me money at the time, I wouldn't have been smart enough to know what to do with it, and would have just bought a bunch of drugs and lottery tickets, and proceeded to starve to death. It's a good thing that only certain people have all the money, so they can tell me how smart they are at spending it. "Working class"? As opposed to what?
Yeah Peterson should stick to psychology, everything else he tries to talk on is just really bad opinion being passed off as truth
I don’t have any big problems, but will by the end of this video ,negative talk brings us all down
Being thankful to God for everything you have and asking forgiveness for all of your faults are two strongest things to check those two attitudes.
The man who isn't grateful to his creator, never can be grateful for other things.
Try to find the true religion of God and follow it. Your will be successful in this world and the hereafter.
So what do we mean by "resentment"? Here's a hint: The Latin root word for resentment is sentis -- which means, 'to feel.' And everybody knows what the prefix 're-' means -- to do again. So when we resent something we are re-feeling an original/earlier (most commonly) negative emotion. So most commonly, we are 're-feeling' anger... or bitterness... or jealousy... or hurt of some kind... i.e., emotional pain. The question is: Why do we so often insist on holding onto old emotion pain?? Why do we tend to keep choosing to re-feel & re-feel again & again some old sense of anger or hatred, or fear, or hurt, etc?? When it comes down to it, THAT's the basis of the pathology underlying resentment.
Thank you for this elaboration!
Jordan Peterson is explaining literal truths from the bible such as pride. And from a head perspective... is utterly insane,..... read the bible. Gods Word searches ultimate and final truth. And is avalaible freely to everyone and anyone.
ego is the only thing affected by this 2 attitude.
I also dont even know if ego is an emotion..
Eh, you win some , you lose some. And sometimes it rains.
9-20-2020 - - - - When I was in a philosophy discussion group, we discussed justice and asked ourselves which we would prefer: justice or mercy. It came to light that we want mercy for ourselves and justice for others. After listening to Dr. Peterson it seems to me that the wish for justice (for others) comes out of our resentment, thinking perhaps that we have been deprived of something and getting "justice" will contribute to getting that lost thing back or at least to punish those who deprived us to start with. Arrogance? Where's the line on that?
I think he has another lecture entitled resentment is your best friend too. Really depends how you channel your emotions imo.
Yep those two will do it. I have personal experience and they both nearly made me go insane and then i found Christ. And btw the spirit of resentment and arrogance can possess young children so get started early in showing them The Way. Just a reminder to myself re my grandson. Peace
I am so resentful that if I am not shredding someone else to pieces, I start to shred myself.
He just described everyone i work with.
Poverty is a strengthening of character and real life experience that teaches one how to be industrious.
Life was not meant to be fair. If it were, what would we learn and i would be bored out of my mind
"Intellectuals" pretending to advocate for the working class, but really only masking resentment. Sounds so strangely familiar.
Our Political System in a Nut Shell.
I liked your comment, Mr. Cook, under the assumption that you have an appreciation of the irony at work here and that your meaning isn't so "unsophisticated" (to borrow a word from Mr. Peterson) as Mr. Gunzilla...
But untrue.
Astute.
Don't cut out questions, only bad students don't listen to other students.
All recorded university lectures in all subjects and institutions edit out the students' questions, due to privacy or something.
@@danb2108 Yeah it's not essential for learning but it enhances it for sure
4:26 he was about to say stupid but chose a more sophisticated word for it :)
I would add contempt.
Would that be linked to resentment? Not challenging you, but just asking a question.
All the BLESSINGS to you, sir.
Thank you for this.❤
Salute to this Sir Jordan Peterson
Why do I feel I've got both of them before even watching this?
This reminds me of a type of therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. You just have to accept reality and commit to fixing your inadequacies. I have a *big* problem with feeling inadequate. I thought that this feeling was the problem and was stuck as to how to fix it. I got it backwards. I need to accept that I have inadequacies, and fix them. Long and painful, but well worth doing.
Peterson making words make sense, thank you
Is envy included under resentment? I've noticed envy will blind a person.
Yes
I would have thought pride, entitlement and envy ...which if we dig down, is essentially what JP is saying. The two roads meet at the same crossroad!.
Entiendo algo de inglés, no totalmente pero de una forma global me pareció una gran ponencia! I liked it.,
Orwell's diagnosis😱😱 its so accurate🔥
WTF! i was still listening to that.
Original sin and rebelliousness lol. Hes either a genius or a madman
Original sin and rebelliousness are synonymous both stemming from pride.
This guy is extremely smart...👍
Thank You. You are miracle of a Human sir.
I needed to hear this today. Thank you
