Getting the brake lights to work consistently has been a nightmare with my 71 Dodge. Sometimes when I press the brake pedal there are no brake lights. Sometimes if I hold the pedal down and slap the steering wheel they come on. Sometimes I turn the headlights on and then off, the brake lights come on after the tail lights go off. I thought I figured out it was in the turn signal switch. It wasn't getting continuity from one side of a contact rivet to the other side. I soldered it a bit and the brake lights started working and passed inspection. Then it started doing it again. Put a new turn signal cam onto the old switch. Had to trim the whiskers and bend them but finally got it working and passed inspection the next year. It started doing it again. Bought a whole new turn signal switch with cam and it didn't work because of the hazard switch part was wired differently. Gutted the hazard switch and shorted between the 2 places necessary (no more hazards though). It worked, passed inspection, but now it's doing it again. I really don't want to mess with the new turn signal cam whiskers but from this video it looks like that may be the problem.
That kind of thing is tough. Our '72 F100 has subscriptions...cause issues don't really cut it. We gave up and are going to do an episode on replacing the harness with an American Autowire one.
Your channel has helped me quite a lot with restoring my 1970 mustang coupe! Thank you! The brake wiring in the ‘70’is different than ALL the other years. Kinda weird. I have side, and front blinkers, but no tail light blinker. My tail lights do work for brakes. Any ideas?
1969 Mustang 302 owner here. Great video. You've set me off down the rabbit hole now. My issue is this. I've got brake lights & signal lights working on both sides. However, I have no running tail lights and flickering head lamps. What does that suggest to you as the best place to start looking? Thanks in advance;)
Also on my 70 Mustang Convertible, the top stopped while lowering it about 3/4 of the way down. My wife and I pushed it the rest of the way down. When trying to raise it, it goes up about 1/3 of the way and stops. The hydralic pump stops running. Let it sit a few minutes and it will do the same thing. I took out the seat and filled the resivoir. Still does the same thing. Took of side panels and nothing is binding. I took off the door threshold and saw a partially bare wire (worn through cover and the wire cover). I cut the wire and found it to be good. I cut the other wire also. I have continuity to the pump. I unplugged pump and have cont. thru the pump. Also have continuity through the wires to the cut. I can "bump" the top up or down with the switch. Bump it and count to 10 and bump it and count to 10. Each bump moves top a few inches. If I hold switch constant, it will travel abt 1/3 of the way and stop and the pump stops running. Wait a few minutes and it will doe the same thing. Does anyone have an answer as to what is going on?
+AutoRestoMod Thanks for the response. I found the owners manual and it says there is a 20 amp circuit breaker at the starter relay that shuts off with overload and resets when overload is gone. The pump motor must be overloading the breaker. I'm also suspicious of the right side hydraulics and/or mechanism. The top stops about the same place going down as it stops coming up. Again, I can hit the switch and wait a few seconds and hit it again and repeat this and get the top up or down. The right side is stiffer when trying to push it down or pull it up manually. Going to change out breaker first. Pump motor gets warm but not hot at all to the touch. Will be a couple of weeks before I get back to it. A friend thinks it's a bad relay or the switch.
I have a 68 mustang that had a similar right brake light issue. Your solution fixed my brake light but now my back up lights flash when I put my right turn signal on. Doesn't happen on the left. Is there a cross contact in T/S switch or could it be something else? Thanks
@@AutoRestoMod You were correct. I unwrapped the whole tailight loom and found that a section of 4 wires that were stuck together and maybe had shorted out. I separated the wires and spliced in new wire. Problem solved. Thanks.
I know this is an older video, but hoping someone will read & respond... that flat metal bar that fell out of the turn switch, where does it go in the turn signal assembly? Mine fell out as well, but it's never shown in the video when you reassemble everything & I can find anything online...help!

I have a 70 mustang with no brake lights or rear turn signal when the headlights are on. Besides this switch and the headlight switch, do you have any other advice?
On my 67 Coupe, I bought new tail light sockets. The new sockets have a red and white wire. My old ones are a different color. I can hook them up one way and just the tail lights come on, if I swap the wires both tail & brake come on. Turn signals dont work at all either way. Which way should it be? Or does it matter, and maybe I just have an issue with my brake switch or turn signal switch or flasher under the dash? Thanks!
Funny, I've seen a recent post on this on Facebook. One is for the running lights and the other is for brake lights/ turn signals. Put a bulb in it run 12 volts to a wire, ground the assembly and test it. If the main filament burns, that is your brake and turn. Wire accordingly.
@@AutoRestoMod What I meant to say was when I pull the headlights switch, the tails come on, if I swap the wires, tails and brake come on, without pushing the brake pedal.
My 1968 mustang has been thru 3 starters right now and it keeps turning when I break or when it’s just on idle and I took it to the mechanic and they said it’s and idle problem that keeps breaking the starters, is that a possibility?
I've got a 65 and I can't figure out for the life of me why the instrument cluster light doesn't blink when turning right but turning left will trigger it. Seems like I have power everywhere. All turnsignals are working. This causes me to not realize my right blinker is on when driving sometimes.
Providing a schematic/wiring diagram with switch contacts, power & ground connections, and wire color codes would: 1. Clarify the circuits for brake lights, turn signals, and horn; 2. Reduce the need for verbal commentary by 80%; 3. Make troubleshooting crystal clear.
Schematics are available by Googling. They are hard to convey on a video as well. I find that most people won't go to an associated web page (I've done that in the past and less than a third of the viewers went to look at it). But yes, a schematic is always a great idea when troubleshooting.
My 70 Mustang Convertible right signal would flash very slowly and turn lights on and it would flash 2 or 3 times and then stay on. Left side OK. I changed ALL bulbs all around the car and it flashed better, but turn on lights and the same thing happened again after several flashes. It apparently was grounding through the running lights. I cleaned sockets and sprayed WD40 in each light around the car. No difference. I finally took my jumper cables and attached one to the frame and the other to the receptacle of the rear brake/flash. Flashed quickly and like the left and flashed similiar to left with lights on. I spliced into the ground wire and grounded the light to the floor of the trunk. Now both flashers work alike. The front running/turn lights don't have ground wire as they are screwed to the bumper. I cleaned both of these and it made no difference either.
+Tom Williams Grounds are key. Make sure that you have an engine ground wire as well. We'd recommend getting a good wiring diagram and making sure that all the grounds are good, clean and solidly tied to the chassis. We'd then do a trace if the ground clean up didn't pan out. I have a 2006 V6 Mustang with a strange issue. passenger tail light wasn't working properly so replaced with LEDs. Turn signal works, brake light works, reverse light works... if i turn the headlights on in flashes for a second and shuts off. everything still works as if I didn't even turn the headlights on. No issue with the LED as it works perfectly if plugged into the driver side assembly.
on my 69 mustang my turn signals suddenly stopped working. it has the original switch in the column. Is it worth going through all these checks or is it safe to assume that after 46 years the switch is shot? My back up lights and interior lights are out also, but they stopped working before the turn signal and from what I can tell, neither of those systems go through the column. it's a troubleshooting nightmare.
Backup lights are wired through the neutral safety switch harness, so that is a more or less "independent system". The dome light is run through the light switch and the door switches. I would suspect the switches first. Use a test light to determine 12 volts. from the switch point in the door to the fuse. Also make sure the dome light fuse is good by checking for twelve volts on both sides of the fuse, then remove the fuse and clip the test light to one side and touch the other with the lead. We're considering a video on dome lights. Since we ran into that same problem on the '67. Finally we'd suspect the turn signal switch.
+AutoRestoMod Muscle Car Resto and Modifications , my '69 doesn't have a dome light though. it has the bulbs under the dash that lights the floor and bulbs in the rear sailpanels (it's a sportsroof) to light the rest of the interior.
Sane thing, the dome circuit runs all of that. Get a diagram and start at the door switches and move in. If you can get to the wires that plug in to the switch you can use a jumper to test them. We may do this on our Falcon here soon to show procedure.
Look to your grounds on the markers also check the headlight switch and wires for the headlights at the switch. Sometimes these get fried and can cause the switch to fail.
