Thank you very much Haily (hope i spelled correct) for your natural ki kiddy poses resulting amazing outcome.
Thank you sir, for your energitic and detailed explanation of taking blurred background images without expensive aperture lens.
Great input for me and now i have confidence to take such images (already did with my Nikon D5200, 18 - 300mm lens) without spending huge money on buying one more lens.

great video! As you changed the aperture I noticed the lighting stayed the same. When i mess with my f-stop it always affects the lighting so most of the time I get frustrated because I can't get the picture I want with good lighting. I just figured since I was changing how much light I let in that it was inevitable. How did you get the brightness to stay the same as you shot all the different aperture settings?

Great question! The key would be to set your camera in Aperture Priority mode (A or AV) on your camera. Aperture Priority mode will let you manually change the aperture, and then the camera will automatically set the Shutter Speed and ISO around your Aperture settings to get the correct light. Try that and let me know if you still have issues. I have a video on Aperture Priority mode coming soon!

+PhotographyTV sahweet! That makes complete sense. I usually just shoot in full manual mode. Thanks!

That is definitely good as it gives you the most control, but it means you have to make the offsetting adjustments yourself. If you are in full manual mode, then the difference would be that you have to make an adjustment to either Shutter Speed or ISO manually as you change the Aperture as opposed to being in Aperture Priority mode in which case the camera makes the offsetting adjustments for you. So if you are in full manual mode, and you make your Aperture more narrow (increasing the F stop number), then you are decreasing the amount of light, which is why you were seeing different results in full manual mode if you made no other adjustments. So, in order to keep the exposure the same in full manual mode after increasing the F stop number, you would either need to slow down your shutter speed, or increase your ISO, or both, which would help to increase the amount of light and offset the decreased light from your Aperture, so in the end, you would have the right exposure. Aperture Priority does all of that for you and just lets you worry about taking control of the Aperture so it's a much easier place to start.
Summary: Aperture Priority = manual control of Aperture / auto (camera) control of Shutter Speed and ISO vs. Full Manual = manual control of Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO.

+PhotographyTV right on. It's kind of a pain having to mess with the ISO on the fly on my Nikon...not sure if yours is easier to get to. I try not to bump that up too much if I have to anyway because the quality suffers. Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I'll get back to taking more pictures like I use to.

And the fourth thing is the size of your sensor... Large sensors provide less DOF than small sensors.
