Speaking of Peavy Mics... Back in the 70s I was in a cover band setting up in a Brooklyn pub when I realized I didn't have my microphone bag. In a panic I ran a couple of blocks to a local music store and bought a Peavy Dynamic mic for $50. It was roughly the shape of an SM58 but was all white. It wound up being my favorite vocal mic. Around 10 years later I was freelance engineering a session in a recording studio in Tampa, Florida. I was recording a grand piano with an AKG C414 and as an experiment I placed my old Peavey mic on a stand under the piano pointing up at the soundboard. The next day the owner of the studio having listened to the recordings I had made the night before raved about the sound of the piano, saying he had never heard that piano sound that great. He asked me how I mic'ed it. I showed him my set-up and he asked me if he could buy my Peavey. I said it was my favorite vocal mic for live gigs and didn't want to sell it. He offered me $200. I sold it to him. I believe he set it up permanently under that piano.
I traded, with an old boss, a Pioneer turntable I had refurbished for a bundle of musical equipment. In the lot was a Peavey Celebrity Series CD20 in white with a black grille. It actually sounds good on many voices, acoustic guitars, accordion, bagpipe and who knows what else. I mean, it's not my go-to for anything, but whenever I pull the thing out the vibe gets a little silly then surprised reactions follow.
M88: nice mic! Too dark for most voices IMO, but great on bass guitar cabs, floor toms, even kick drum. C1000: end fire, battery powerable condenser. 3 identical pencil condensers: 2x overheads plus hi hats ;)
Hey! Did you join us over in the Booth Junkie discord yet? Come on over and say hi! discord.gg/48m3V3hGhh (this is an updated link and should work now!)
Love the C414 B-ULS. I have three of them and I use them regularly on drum overheads, acoustic guitars and other stringed instruments, guitar and bass amps, as well as vocals. Truly versatile mics, I tend to use them like "the SM57 of condenser mics" in terms of when I reach for them.
Looks like you did alright with your "Mystery box"! I hope the nice models still work, particularly the C414! The C1000s is an end address, small condenser, often used for things like drum overheads, hi-hat, acoustic guitar, etc. Not the best mics in the world, but OK if you are on a budget! My profile pic is a pair of them as I use them for my ASMR stuff and drum recordings, etc!
Mike, here are some useful things about some of those mics. If you have any issues with the Unidyne SM57 that you got out of that box, there's likely some foam that has started to break apart and is now contacting the diaphragm. I also have one of those ATM41s. I like it. The capsule on it is massive. I'm SO jealous of the AKG C1000S I had a chance to buy an AKG D1000E a few weeks ago. I turned it down because I didn't have time to research it before I left town. The screen on those is sintered metal, which is basically what you get when you take metal beads and weld/glue them in that arrangement. If you have an air compressor, you'll see the same type of filter being used to keep dirt out of the pump and canister. The MK319s are datable based on the types of screws that are found all over the body. There are some forums that I found to help date mine, I'll link it in discord if I remember where it is. Cheers!
After the first few, I thought I had been too. I got nervous after I opened it and started seeing really banged up mics. The weird part was that the sale had other nice mics that were separate. I had no expectation to get a *really* nice mic. But once I started digging in and I saw that striped box I new I had to save it for last.
Dude, I was hoping for you to have a 414 in that case while you were opening it up! and Bam! there it was! Nice bunch of mics you got there! and that empty ziplock bag at the beginning was probly the empty bag of weed.. loll .. Cool box of mic's, Bro!
Congrats on the nice haul! Scoring a Unidyne III as your first 57 is great luck ;) Man, I would have loved to look around that place, I'm a sucker for vintage studio gear! I _think_ those wooden speaker monitors up top @ 0:45 were EV MS-802's, classics I still use and love, but aren't so common anymore. Anyway, hope your new additions provide >$1k worth of dynamic enjoyment! 👍👍
Nice haul! So much more fun than watching Storage Wars! Plus you should find out what that cool Sperry-Univac case is worth. I bet there are collectors for that vintage computer swag!!
Mike, Please make a video showing us how good this new treasure trove of Mics sound. Would love to hear how many still work and how they sound after years of hard use.
Enjoyed your gab bag. I have collected some decent mics over the years. Shure 87 and 57 2 each, Peluso 22-251 3 matched with Brass C-12. AKG 451-2 ,1- 414 ULS, 414-EB C12 brass cap AND RCA- 44 ribbon. The Pelusos are top notch.
Exciting video, well done. I knew every name of every mic within 1 second of you showing it out of the case/bag/box lol. Really had me thinking you'd been left holding a bag of trash until that M88TG came out. Surprised you didn't find any Sennheisers in there. Both Beyers are good horn mics (sax, trumpet, etc), although Lou was likely using them on a bass drum and/or floor toms (I would say snare but I'm guessing it's all dirt-baggy enough to assume the 57s were always on the snares and rack toms). $1 says the B-ULS was a spot mic used just outside of the bass drum for shell resonance, on bass and guitar cabinets and for backing vox. We'd have to hear Lou's recordings to know more.
The grill on the AKG D1000E is "sintered" metal. Possibly aluminum. The process can be applied to almost any metal. Very surprised to hear you had no SM57s. I figured everybody had at least one of those. I was talking to another sound engineer the other day, and we both said that if we could have only one mic type in our mic locker it'd be SM57s. Love your videos, Mike. Thanks for all that you do for audio.
Your C 414 is from around 1986 or 87 ULS stands for ultra linear series. It has a lower noise floor compared to other 414's. It also has a transformer unlike the later Transformerless or TL versions. It's a great mic but can be a little sibilant like all other 414s.
Thanks for sharing the unboxing of all these mics. I was hoping you'd find a vintage Neumann. Looking forward to seeing a review (and maybe comparison?) for these mics.
Man, what a rollercoaster. I was beginning to think you wasted so much money on a TON of clips and a bunch of - though good - but not special enough (?) mics, for the AKG to pop up in the end. And yeah, PLEASE do a follow up where you test them all!!
Skip to 3:15 for the actual start. • Popper stopper filter. • Bag of mic clips. • Another bag of mic clips • SM57 (original version) • Audio Tech MB1000L • SM48 • AKG D 1000E • EV N/D 457 • SM 57 (new version) x2 • Audio Tech ATM63 • Audio Tech ATM41 • Random budget mic • Beyerdynamic M 88 TG • PV CD 30 Celebrity Series • AKG C 1000 S • Beyerdynamic M 420 NC • Shure Prologue LO Z 16L Qty.3 • Octavia MK 319 • AKG C 414 B-ULS
That was fun, kinda like I was about to win something or opening a present sorta feeling. I was nervous about you reaching into that box without looking. We have brown recluse and black window spiders around where I live.
What a cool video! Nice find! I'm not so much of a gambler, but man do I love buying vintage gear on the cheap and see if it still works... Also I love to get it fixed as well (most of the gear has some issue). Seeing pre-loved gear getting a future is awesome!
Can't believe you've never used a Shure SM57! I sang through them since the early 70s, never liked 58s(finally switched to a couple of more modern mics circa 2010). Not just an instrument mic like some think, many 70s rockers used them for vocals, including Ian Gillian of Deep Purple. It's said Brian Wilson liked 57s for his vocals in the studio at times. By the way, the vintage 57s are very hard to kill! AKG D1000E was a fine vocal mic in the 70s, my guitarist used one for vocals. It should have a frequency switch on it, I think it reads L-M-H for low-medium-high settings, if I remember correctly. The AKG C1000s is a very useful mic, it'll run off a battery & if new comes with switchable frequency caps for the diaphragm. Good for acoustic instruments, at one time used by reporters for live "street" interviews because it was a battery powered condenser. The 414 as the last "surprise" makes the purchase worthwhile, if it works properly. Good video for us "ol' guys"!
Hello and thank You, i would really like a voiceover test of some of the "stage" Dynamic mics, including the cheaper ones of course - i am curious how they sound - perhaps with some eq... Chris
The C414 B-ULS is after the switch to the teflon ring capsules, and is probably the darkest sounding of the classic C414s. Also the MK-319 more realistically is worth $150 used. More expensive used ones don't sell because it's €249 new.
@@BoothJunkie It's partially because of the huge mark up the US dealers charge. Like I saw a used MK-220 for like $400 USD when a new stereo pair is like €500. I buy right from Oktava so that's where I'm getting the prices.
I saw the SM57's and immediately wondered if they were $15 Chinese copies. But the mics all appear pretty old, so probably not. Interesting thing happening here in Asia, due to all of these copies. It's actually causing the prices on verifiably legit microphones by Neumann, Shure, etc., to go UP. People (like me) are so worried about paying huge money for a Chinese copy, that they're going to greater lengths to verify authenticity. And those models with paperwork proving they are real are going up in price on the used sites. Fun video. Looking forward to the tests (you are doing that, I hope)? :)
Cool find Mike, thanks for sharing the experience.

When i read the title i was immediatly saying "oh noooooo" in my head bcause mystery boxes are so often scam or not worth the money. BUT the video was very entertaining, and i really hope that you do a sound test too ^^.
I love audio gear, my current collection includes: one Rode Podmic; one Sennheiser e-835; two SM57s; one SM58; and one Behringer B-5 pencil condenser mic.
This was amazing! Thank you for recording it for us. I started my microphone collection by buying a travel case of random microphones on eBay. Love it.
those old (even bad) mics hold some really cool value in the unique sound they bring - something worth more than the 1,000 bucks for the lot. Would love to hear some drums on those lower end mics.
The C414 EB was the mic that had the switch over from c12 to nylon cap. I had a nylon one. I had 4 414s at one point, 2 B-uls, EB and a XLii.. I kept the 2 B-uls.. I got one for $400 Can, which was a steal.. The Unidyne is priced a lil high, you can get them for under $200, still cool though. Best mic lot haul I got was 3 AKGs for $900 CDN.. The C414 EB, D12e and a C451eb (older version with removable capsule)
Mike, what I REALLY want to request is a comparison between the Audio Technica AT897 and your Sennheiser MKH416. It seems any direct comparisons of these two mics are absent on UA-cam -- or anywhere -- unless you pay some guy for a key to hear his video. That's the weirdest thing I've ever seen! You can hear the AT875R vs the 416, but never the AT897, which I think is a better mic to compare it to. Please consider doing this comparison, if you can get your hands on an AT897. Thank-you!
As a complete newby, It would be nice to see (Hear) how these different mics record the sound. And after processing, what the differences are between the cheap and the top of the range , and the vintage and the current mics are. Nice vids by the way. Great “Bedside manner” 😃
Would love to see a follow up video of you testing each one and maybe even a tier list?
Yes this☝️
Also Xbox love to see it
exactly my thoughts! A part two to this would be great, and for a video like this full of unknown microphones it is nearly necessary.
Yes!!!, it would be good to hear them, but specially the ones that are expensive.
he did it , here it is : ua-cam.com/video/W22-GzUKV40/v-deo.html

Now this is the content I love to see :)
I wholly agree. I'm not into fashion anyway. I like a plain old pair of jeans and a graphic shirt. XD
Have a good day netizen! 💜

Hey Mike, be sure to unscrew the handle on the C1000S to make sure there's no corroded battery inside!

There’s NOTHING better than the joy of unboxing something special. Excited to share in your joy!

Thanks for sharing Mike, as a former radio guy (from the 1970's), I also have an interest in microphones.

What a fantastic video, thank you for taking this gamble Mike!
I'm looking forward to hearing you record through that vintage AKG gem :)
22:00 Watching a man strike vintage mic gold never gets old
Also, that old MK-319 has gotta be worth a bit!
Nice haul with that AKG 414, but I kept hoping you'd pull out a vintage Telefunken or Nenmann studio mic.
AGH the last mic came out of nowhere! Love that series of mics!
Out of nowhere for sure. Thanks for watching!
That was super fun! Thanks for sharing, glad you got your money's worth!

I had the best 25 minutes of my week. Well done.
Mike, Please make a video showing us how good this new treasure trove of Mics sound. Would love to hear how many still work and how they sound after years of hard use.
Judging by the fame most of these have I doubt any would not work lol

This was fascinating, I was a little nervous for you when you started pulling out bags of dusty clips, but you kind of made out!
I enjoy all of your videos, and I'm very happy to see a new one!

can't wait to hear you on the Beyer and AKG 414!!!
Thanks for sharing the unboxing of all these mics. I was hoping you'd find a vintage Neumann. Looking forward to seeing a review (and maybe comparison?) for these mics.
Gotta wonder how many shows those mics have seen.... and the stories they could tell.
Wait for the "laugh" when describing the beyerdynamic m420 mic. Priceless.
Lucky you. That C-414 and the Oktava alone made the purchase worth it.
The C414 B-ULS is my favorite. The mid low is excellent.
We need tests of these microphones! Thanks for the great video.
You missed the secret compartment in the box. It was hiding a Neuman. 😁
The empty bag is where the weed was lol
No no, I bought a 414 ULS in the 2000s. Love that mic. Also have a EB version of it.
Man, what a rollercoaster. I was beginning to think you wasted so much money on a TON of clips and a bunch of - though good - but not special enough (?) mics, for the AKG to pop up in the end.

Quick Tip: use Naphtha (or lighter-fluid) to easily remove sticky tape reside from gear! you’re welcome 😊
lighter fluid is miracle cleaner, learned from guitar repair book
im really glad for you that the c414 was in the box and the best thing of all it is an original one made in Austria
Part 2 is you testing them, right? Please.
That was fun, kinda like I was about to win something or opening a present sorta feeling.
I was nervous about you reaching into that box without looking. We have brown recluse and black window spiders around where I live.
Sweet haul. The sm57 looks so small in your hands. You got some huge mitts, brotha.
Now that's a SWEET HAUL!!! 😍😍😍
Palpable excitement! What fun! can't wait to hear them!
What a cool video! Nice find!
I'm not so much of a gambler, but man do I love buying vintage gear on the cheap and see if it still works...
Also I love to get it fixed as well (most of the gear has some issue).
Seeing pre-loved gear getting a future is awesome!
What a great idea and beautifully delivered as always. I always look forward to your posts! Can’t wait to hear some of the mics!
This got me watching through with alot of anticipation. Can't wait for the tests.

i would really like a voiceover test of some of the "stage" Dynamic mics, including the cheaper ones of course - i am curious how they sound - perhaps with some eq... Chris
This was really cool. Congrats!
the transition of the amount going from red to green was extremely satisfying
The C414 B-ULS holds a special spot in my heart lol it was the first good mic that got gifted to my studio and someone broke it a few years later smh
I bet there's one or two collectors of ancient computers that would love to get their hands on that Sperry Univac parts case.
The C414 B-ULS is after the switch to the teflon ring capsules, and is probably the darkest sounding of the classic C414s.
Also the MK-319 more realistically is worth $150 used. More expensive used ones don't sell because it's €249 new.

This was amazing! Thank you for recording it for us. I started my microphone collection by buying a travel case of random microphones on eBay. Love it.
Half way through the video i was like damn you got scammed man lol… but all the good stuff was at the bottom of the box.
Please keep us posted on the progress on all of these mics especially the really good ones. We all will be waiting.
I don't know much about mics but that seemed like a damn good haul. Fun video Mike.
those old (even bad) mics hold some really cool value in the unique sound they bring - something worth more than the 1,000 bucks for the lot. Would love to hear some drums on those lower end mics.
I only got 2 minutes into the video when it kinda felt like when Geraldo Rivera went to open the Al Capone Vault? Breathless with anticipation.
Wow, great pulls! Loved this video.
I love an 80's Hollywood ending! 👏
My favorite VO mic is a Peavey large diaphragm dynamic.
It is *amazing* that the box is branded Sperry/Univac. That is a *wild* connection to the bad old days in the history of computers.
Thank-you!
Enjoyed this!
Could you please normalize volume of your clips? The ad segment was like 10db louder.
Mike, As you realize by now that AKG414 was probably from the nineties/ mid 90s, at least that's where mine came from.
Youre kidding. That akg at the end! Wow. Great buy!
As a complete newby, It would be nice to see (Hear) how these different mics record the sound. And after processing, what the differences are between the cheap and the top of the range , and the vintage and the current mics are.
Nice vids by the way. Great “Bedside manner” 😃
That was fun! thanks for sharing.
Great content. Can’t wait to see you try them all out!
