Oh wow, I knew there had to be an easier way than most of what I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing and I’m a new subscriber due to this video as a suggestion 🥳
Would PVA glue work the same as mod podge? I want to grow crystals with my granddaughter and Im completely new to this so any advice would be welcome although you pretty much nailed it with your tutorial.
Hi! It is. There are lots of different types so I don't know if their water resistantness(!) changes with each one, the one I used in the video always works great for me. Just let it dry out fully! X
Thank you Tracey ☺️ No, you want to pour the solution as soon as the salt has dissolved and let it cool down in the mold. The cooling down part along with good sunlight, I find, is the best way to grow the crystals. I'm not really sure why and there may be a better way but this always seems to work for me ☺️👍🏻
You're welcome 😃 Oh if I could figure it out I'd tell you 😂 I just can't seem to think of a way to make a druzy/gem cluster mold for pouring resin into that's all diy. The only thing I can think of that's a little less diy-from-scratch is finding a gem you like the look of and casting that, or, buying little crystals (or making little resin Crystals from individual crystal molds) and sticking a load of those together to create your own gem cluster and then casting that 🤷🏼♀️ what do you think? X
@@hscraftytutorials Thank you- I cant think of a way either. I made a mold last week & it was so hard for me to figure out the right way to cast it so it would face the way I wanted it to & I still did it wrong- lol
Hi Hanna! I love the simple to make these druzy molds! 👏👏👏❤️ Question, can I put two layer of water ínstead of one, to make the crystals bigger?? Thank you for your awesome tip! 🙏🤗👩🎨🖼❤️❤️❤️
Hi Paulina, you're so welcome ☺️ and yes, you can do multiple layers. I think I even tried it myself but there wasn't a significant difference so I didn't think it was worth adding into the tutorial but they do grow slightly. They might grow better in really good sunlight, I only really got sunlight in the 2nd half of the day. Best of luck ☺️👍🏻
Love this, thank you, I'm little confused, with Petra said 50gms alum salts X 200 ml water. I tryed, was a desaster lol, Im trying yours, so is it equal parts water with epsom salts? Thank you in advance 🙏
Hi, thank you ☺️ yes it's equal parts epsom salts to water, however once that dissolves, add more salt if you can. Stop adding salt when you notice that it isn't dissolving anymore, a 1:1 ratio is just a good starting point. Hope that's clearer ☺️
The result product is stunning ❤️ I have 2 doubts... 1) Can't our edible salt crystallize ? 2) Can't we use the silicon molds after making Druzy molds, do they get damage ?
Hi Harshith, great questions! The salt does crystalize but after about a week and a half so plenty of time to make lots of molds ☺️ The molds do get a little messy at first when cleaning but they do come up clean with some perseverance. I've only fully cleaned a couple so far because for me, I now specifically dedicate a handful of molds to druzy making. Because of this it wasn't too important whether they cleaned up fully when starting again which saved me lots of cleaning time. If you're worried about damaging your molds though, I would suggest dedicating just one or 2 molds to druzy work 👍🏻 hope that helps ☺️
i don't have epsom salt available... Can i use Alum or table salt? Alum does have a triangular bonding and chunks might be a bit bigger. Any solutions?
@@LA-no3yj Hi! I'm not sure about table salt, but you absolutely can use alum salts. I haven't tried it myself but from what I saw whilst trying to figure the process out, the steps are exactly the same and both methods provide very similar results. I only used epsom salts as I thought more people would have those to hand ☺️
Haha so do I! I lived in the US at the time that I made this tutorial but now that I live back in the UK, I believe it would still work. It’s not the heat that’s needed, just some sunlight. Ideally, yes, lovely bright sun but we take what we can get 🤣
Hi, I’m wondering why do you do the water mixture ? I’m a little confused because you already have the salt there being held on with the glue. Please let me know what the purpose of the boiled water is? Thanks for sharing.
Hi Maria. So as I understand it, the main contributor to the forming of the crystals is the salty water mixture. The salt on the inside of the mold is just there to help the developing crystals latch on to something to make it easier for them to grow. Hope that clears things up ☺️
I’m sorry it didn’t work. It can be a little fiddly. Just make sure the salt has dried out thoroughly and spraying it with sealant definitely helps with strengthening x
Hi, I'm late to the game of druzy moulds. I've wanted to make my own for well over a year but never had the guts 🤣😂 a quick question, your clear coating spray" is that a silocine release spray or have i misunderstood this 🙂
Hi there ☺️ it's never too late to get started! The clear spray is to help solidify the crystals so that when the silicone hardens and is peeled off, the crystals should hopefully stay put and not crumble. I think if you wanted to use mold release you would use this on top of the clear spray layers (I've never used mold release though, that's just my guess). I hope that helps ☺️ x
@Hannah Somerville's Crafty Tutorials thank you, so much x do you, by any chance, have a link to the spray as I'm not sure which one it is (so many to choose from😂
Hello! Yes, I believe you can use plastic containers too. I have only ever used silicone myself, but as long as you are creating that salty waterproof base then the crystals should form ☺️👍🏻
When you pour resin and use the mold as an insert and it leaves an open space in your resin piece. Do you fill that or leave open just trying to get an understanding of all the uses of the druzy mold.
Hi Beth. I leave the crystally part open/exposed. I understand that if you were to fill this in with resin, the crystal texture would disappear. The resin bonds together to become one solid piece and all definition would be lost. This may be different if you used 2 different colours. The join between the first piece of resin and the newly poured piece should then be visible but I haven't tried this so I couldn't say for sure ☺️
It just means turning them around so that the opposite sides are now in the sun for an even exposure. Crystals still grow without sunlight but I've just found that they get a bit bigger and chunkier with sunlight so you should still be able to grow them without ☺️
Hi, do you mean the smallest container that I used to make the smallest mold? It was the bottom of an old silicone mixing cup. After a long time my silicone mixing cups can get a little natty so instead of throwing it away I just cut out the bottom. It was the perfect size for those little insert druzies for coasters 👍🏻
Hi there! The mod podge step is so that we can get the salt to stick to the mold. The glue needs to be waterproof so that when the solution is added, it doesn’t break down ☺️
Hi there ☺️ As far as I know you can! I'm sorry if this turns out to be untrue, I couldn't be certain. I have only tried the plain ones shown in my video but I didn't come across any info to the contrary during my research into epsom salt druzies ❤️
@@Terraann85 😋 I think the main thing is it needs to be waterproof so that when the water sits in it for hours it doesn't ruin the hold or make the water all....gluey ☺️
Hi Sherry. So instead of the spray glue I used? Yes, that should work for getting the salt to stick to the mold, but I don't know how easy it would be to clean the mold later on...😬 *Disclaimer - Hannah will not be held responsible for the injury and/or death of any molds* 😂
