David Mann Chopperfest - the Best of the Best

- David Mann Chopperfest is one of the premiere chopper shows in the United States. The event is held in honor of legendary biker artist David Mann and brings hundreds of custom motorcycles and kustom kulture artists to the California coast each winter. This recap film covers the 17th edition of the festival, held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Sunday February 12th, 2023. Thank you to Rets Riding Glasses for sponsoring our coverage of the event: retsglasses.com/
Our recap video contains nearly two hours of footage of the best Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads, Triumphs, Evolution Big Twins, Sportster choppers, and many many more. We also interviewed some talented builders and artists to dig deeper into some of the stories behind these bikes.
David Mann Chopperfest pays tribute to the brilliant artist who continues to inspire so many bike builders to this day, and is named in his honor. Tragically, the chopper community recently lost another influential member in David "Huggy Bear" Hansen. David founded David Mann Chopperfest 17 years ago and has been organizing the event ever since. He also owned and ran The Shop in Ventura, which has been a staple in the vintage bike scene for 50 years. We were lucky enough to speak with David Hansen and his son Tory while we filmed this video back in February. Our video is dedicated to David's memory and we thank him for his numerous contributions to the culture we all enjoy so much.

Stacy McCleary -- you're one heck of a guy! Thanks for your story behind that Triumph chopper, your other bikes and the folks in your life. Sixty-nine isn't "old." I built a bike in honor of a pal who was killed in a motorcycle/car accident in 1977. I built the Pan/Shovel chopper that he (my pal Pete) couldn't build. I even painted it the same color that he wanted -- silver. I had an amazing English grandmother named "Sarah." Build right. Ride safe. Viva, David Mann and Chop Cult! -- W (formerly of Santa Rosa, CA).
At 70 I disconvered the same thing.....70 ain't old. Now 71 I still open up my old stage 2 FXDL evo every Spring....get up to 100 mph and yell into the wind..."I ain't dead yet"!
@@TheWolfsnack -- Man, Denis, you've got soul! We older builders/riders have to pass the torch to a younger generation. Ride wide, free and safe on your hopped-up FXDL EVO. -- W
My kinda porn!
That Triumph is way cool, great story.
This upsets me which I know no one gives a damn but at the picture too this video was captain America and Billy's bikes well remakes I watched all this video and it was the only time was the advertisement
Billy's bike was one of the coolest bikes I have ever seen
Thank you guys at ChopCult so much for making these videos for us motorcycle nuts that don't get to make it to the shows! Always stoked to see your stuff when it comes out!!!
Wayne did a helmet for me. It is beyond beautiful. He's the best. Thanks Wayne !!!
C'est le plus beau proverbe que l'on peut entendre en amérique,,, rêve américain, cauchemar indien,,,.
I've ridden 53 years, had all types of bikes, but my hardtail, springer to the next block, H-D chopper was just bad ass! Had someone ask me once, "Dude, without any gauges how do you know how fast you going and when to shift...?" I told him, "I drive as fast or as slow as I feel, and with a piston the size of an oil can pointed at my crotch, I know when it's time to shift!" Love the old-school choppers in this video, they still make my heart race like when I was 11 years old. glad I had one and experienced it.... now my kidney's are much happier on my BMW... sad, but true.
65 years old and the Panheads are truly what still gets me on the edge of my seat.I've been riding an Ultra CouchGlide for a while now,but I have a 07 1200C Sporty that's about to go under a transformation. I have that Chopper itch again !
I am 41 years old, last year I bought my first motorcycle, a Suzuki Van Van. That triumph is the kind of motorcycle I’ve been dreaming with since I was a child. Seeing these videos and these people so in love with those bikes makes me feel so happy. Some day I’ll have my own ❤
Really dig that Sacred Steel longchop panhead, damn cool.
i used to fly down english country lanes on a bonneville. exciting and beautiful ride....lively
Almost 2 hours of beauty and fantasy!! Thank you very much for your video.
“A long time ago, Hermes came down from Mount Olympus, gave a man a V-twin engine and two wheels. And he said: “Here are two details that should be obligatory for you, and do the rest as you like and from what you want. But what you do should please you and people close to you in spirit!
Thus, the first chopper was born! 😉😁😁😍
Thanks, Chop Cult!
Look for the Lowe down ranch run coming soon 🤘🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🤘🏻
That’s a beautiful triumph
Thank you ChopCult for the coverage, the 1:48:25 Gino
Sweet bike, is that all gold plating?
@@chrishoesing5455 It's all one off brass fabrication, Thank you! Gino
putting up a 1981 lowrider love them shovels. my long distance bike is a 2020 limited, black of corse .
One of the best custom bike videos I have seen in years!
Good on Angela, what a kind gesture. Im so happy for you.
3rd time watching this....great shop music
I saw that crazy steam punk bike at the Sacramento Autorama, this last weekend. It was the only custom bike worth looking at, there.
Sir, you are breath of fresh air. Thanks for this story.
I love that color you painted the bike..I know my comment is late but Im just recovering from a stroke been peralized for 4 years just starting to get a little movement..
Enjoyed!!!! 👍 🍻
Wonderful stories from a real man, whose bloody stories you can listen to because they contain really noble and humane content.
I hope that the construction and your driving will continue for a long time!
And the Triumph you built is, in addition to a great story, a really great work of art.
Triumph Tiger 500cc was the first big bike I could ride when I was 12 years old. Gear right and first gear up. It felt really great and the character of the Triumph engine is distantly related to the Harley!
Moved to Florida this year from the west and was bummed I couldn’t go to this. Thanks for the video.
Wish there was a program for vets that are pay check to pay check that would help me get an old Harley that needs work
I have patients. I love this stuff. Thanks for the video
Nice 👍
That Triumph chop is sweet
My name is Volodimyr Tovstopyat. Hello from Ukraine! 👋 ☺ Choper the 👍✌✊✋
Awesome bikes. Very very nice.
Sure would have liked more builders comments about their creations. Love the blues music as well, Over all an excellent video!!!
Cutting the 18 “ out of the Springer was the right thing to do, to getting it sitting perfectly.
Also. It’s so nice to see so many classic built customs without the ( fat ass) 250 - 300 series tires.
Sante
Amazing artistic work..
Beautiful bikes, nice story's, well done 👌
Well done Sir, God Bless!
I met Stacy at Born Free. What an absolute legend!
Awesome
'Sarah'. Nice job, buddy. Love it
Thanks for video👍
GREAT WORK C.C!
Some really interesting people & every Bike Bad to the Bone.
N.Z!
Ive seen BSA A10 hardtailed chop with bonneville disc brakes off of T140 front end with lockheed brake calipers. I also saw a chop with Norton commando motor which was lovely. Harley parts cost a fortune here in the UK and no doubt harleys are more common than honda c90s in the US but they really are so pretty especially those built from old parts like in the early 1960s pre AMF.
Just the work alone impressed the shit out of me. These guys are humble but it’s a hell of a lot of work, trial and error. Do, redo, start over. Bikes are such a great medium for creativity and these builder are certainly creative. Keep on building and riding and you’ll always be happy. Maybe a little frustrated but happy nonetheless. Cheers👍
18:41 that is a sweet tank mounting.
Merci Chopcult, de France 😉
hello from Brasil
Great video! Who is that jamming in the middle of the video! That's awesome riding music 🎶
Hermosas máquinas no hay duda de eso todas tienen algo que te enamora saludos desde México.
What an amazing custom painter the guy is. Some of the most amazing artwork ive ever seen. I know a lady who did photographic retouching years ago. She was so talented but there was no money in it so she gave up airbrushing. Its a shame as she has his level of talent but with different type of paint.
Absolutely beautiful machines. Have you ever considered building a rigid BSA A7 of 1949 or a hardtailed or plunger framed BSA A10? I'm a big fan and loved those old pre unit parallel twins. My dad had a 1939 triumph Tiger 100 he put teles on it and had a chair attached for years.
I love those old Harley and Indians. So beautiful.
37:18 those pipes are really interesting... Me likey
That triumph screams summer of 1969 So Cal.
RIP.Willy.
Great vid. I had two bikes in the show. I laughed when I saw me pushing one of my bikes out at 52:09 cuz the battery was dead.
Sorry about willie and sarah , its sounds like a sad country song , but then the song gets uplifted regarding the chopper being built and loved ! 😮 U look like u can write and sing it sir 😅! 🍻🍷🥃🚬👍✊
Best part was probably Zuko at the startup of the bike just like "FLUFF YEA!" Seems like a good dude won, too bad for responsibilities, but good on him anyway
I hope whoever sees 👀 my question in this video at 17:10 marker there's a trike in the right corner is this trike still around and who was the builder I'm 65 years old and a 2019 HARLEY DAVIDSON FREEWHEELER 114 rider now been riding street bikes for over 40 years and I've never seen a trike like that in my lifetime. Absolutely would love to know about it or even see such a wild trike.
That trike was built by Slim's Fab for Born-Free 12. Here's a link to an interview with Slim where he talks about it: ua-cam.com/video/Thb_xUbyKtY/v-deo.html
Stacy said his wife didn't know any better thought it was normal hey that's my wife God lovem.
Booa!
Choppers are the real bikes; but is there someone who can tell me where I can get the brass hand tire valve cap, to see at 11.33; very thank YOU!!!
38:22 custom mufflers ? Really liked them
Ya I think those are a custom one-offs, seen that style on some other machines but not aware of anyone who sells them. Closest I know of would be regular upswept fishtails www.throttleaddiction.com/paughco-upsweep-fishtail-exhaust-1986-1999-softail-and-evolution-hardtail-customs/
ALWAYS LOVED the BILLY BIKE BETTER. I HAVE BOTH 1:10 MODELS FRANKLIN MINT

Where is this and do they still have it I own a chopper
This show is held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in California. I don't know if they've set a date yet for this winter but it usually takes place in early December
Here's the show's website: chopperfestival.com/
Thanks
Does anybody know what caliper that is at 51:08?

@@ChopCult_09 You're a chopper champion.
He got lucky I wouldn’t trade 100 Harleys for my triumph or even 100 good bikes I love my my triumphs.
Never realized how gawdy Captian America looked. Maybe its my age coming out.😅
haha i remember when i told brobeck i wanted to paint my shovel like some fancy fine CHINA like this i was told that was gay years k=later they build the dutch rudder hahah your welcome
Give the daughter some more money
Way too slow .. So play at double speed... the music is quite something ;-)
Fabulous looking machines but I’d rather have a useable bike. H.D.’s are too flashy.
Does California even allow choppers with loud pipes to be on the road. I heard they are fining and confiscating vehicles that don't conform to the strict laws out there.
Russia is watching! Peace for all! 🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺
rubber fuel lines are amateur
Posers dinosaurs fest
To much talking , not enough motocycles !
